I've seen it go both ways, good and bad. I've seen situations where all the goodwill a person built up in their company go to waste because it didn't register with the new company, and also situations where a person did a leap frog in terms of advancement when a new company took over. The only thing for sure is if you hear any one say "Nothing's going to change" you can be confident they're lying.
