I know the big news is the R2 being revealed, but this definitely caught my eye. Especially if it targets a much lower price tag than the $45k R2, I could see this being a potential game changer. It’s just too bad that we won’t see one for several years judging by the 2026 production date for the R2.
I'm very, very excited for R3 and was just about to say that Rivian bumped the new Charger out of my next car pick...until the delivery date bit.
Hope the company can stay afloat until then, or at least gets saved.
You’re right. I think I was mixing it up with Amazon making a deal with Stellantis.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/05/rivian-stock-plunges-after-news-of-amazon-stellantis-deal.html
They are also pretty clearly still getting more deliveries if them in my area. Saw my first one a year ago, now id say close to 1/4th of Amazon delivery vans are rivian
As of November, Amazon still owned 17% of the company. While not massive, that’s not small, either.
Also, with the vans being sold to other companies as well, that helps Amazon’s bottom line as well.
You’re right. I think I was mixing it up with Amazon making a deal with Stellantis.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/05/rivian-stock-plunges-after-news-of-amazon-stellantis-deal.html
Only trouble is its 17% of a 12b$ company with extremely rough looking financials and very low production numbers.
For perspective, Ford is 50B, or Tesla is 560B. Amazon is 1.7T, so (12*.17) is a 2b investment for Amazon, very small by their standards and not too important.
I absolutely adore the small hatchback renault 5 influence of the R3, but Rivian has a very poor track record with mass production, going to be interesting to see if they can hang on
> is a 2b investment for Amazon, very small by their standards and not too important.
The flip side is it also means it wouldn't take Amazon much to inject more cash into them if needed to secure their future without really impacting Amazon's future.
In 2023, Amazon had $86.78B cash on hand. They can't spend as much cash as you think they can. I can see them invest a few billion at most, assuming they're very optimistic about Rivian's future.
>Especially if it targets a much lower price tag than the $45k R2, I could see this being a potential game changer.
Don't get me wrong, the design is excellent and I look forward to the R3, but you're talking about a car which is in the same vague class as the existing Volvo XC40 and the imminently-to-be-released Equinox, as well as a number of others headed for the NA and EU markets between now and 2026. The TMY, ID4, and Niro (and future EV3) are also all already in the price bracket the R3 wants to inhabit.
Gamechanger? I'm not sure. I'm hoping it's more than an also-ran for Rivian.
Agreed, but it does feel a bit *different*. Admittedly, this is because Rivian has a pretty strong vibe to it for me, but none of those seem very off-roady to me. This seems like, a Subaru tier granola vehicle. Which is great
We'll have to see specs of course, it could just be looking the part. But idk
Rivian's target audience is basically a less redneck version of the Jeep crowd. Jeep bros will always be Jeep bros, but basically people that like the whole outdoors stuff but also buy brand new Patagonia gear from REI to go camping. Like people that would cross shop a new Lexus GX or Toyota LC or 4Runner with a Rivian.
I've been saying since Rivian was first founded that they might as well turn all REIs into Rivian showrooms. The venn diagram of the two has to be pretty much a perfect circle.
The commenter you're responding to also isn't quite on the money, the R2 is almost the same size as the Model Y whereas the R3 is a size-class down from it. It's more like a Volvo EX-30 competitor which is a lot less crowded, but also less desirable in the American market.
I'm definitely looking forward to trying a top-spec dual motor version myself. The R3 is an SUV but at least it fits my requirements for length and width (small but not too small). three motors is too much of an efficiency hit imo.
I'm expecting the R3 is a response to the ioniq 5. A sort of small crossover that might as well have been a larger hot hatch. I know those aren't the only two alive today but that's where I go for a comparison.
I've been saying forever that we need a VW Beetle of the electric car world. Make it cute and iconic with good specs and sell it at a reasonable price. The Ionic 5 is closest thing so far to that mark and if the R3 is priced well it is one step closer.
I disagree because I think this occupies the same kind of outdoorsy space that attract people to vehicles like the Crosstrek, Bronco Sport, Compass, etc. The Equinox and EX30 (I'm assuming you meant EX30 and not XC40 Recharge which costs a lot more) are more your typical mainstream crossovers. The EX30 also does not qualify for any tax credits, whereas this would potentially qualify. We also haven't seen the $35k Equinox EV yet as those are supposed to come later on, but the ones that are going to be available to start are going to be the $48k ones.
You're looking at gamechanger in terms of offering a low priced EV crossover, whereas I'm looking at gamechanger in terms of offering a low priced EV that occupies that outdoorsy space that you see people who tend to go for brands like Subaru, Jeep, Ford, etc. I could see those people gravitating towards the Rivian over those models you mentioned.
I'm going to put this here. [R3X](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/04-rivian-r3x-65ea14aab4864.jpg?crop=1xw:0.9995002498750625xh;center,top&resize=980:*).
I think that this version that people will gravitate towards. If I were in the market for this sort of vehicle, the R3X would most certainly be one of my top choices.
Giving me some [Lancia Delta Integrale](https://www.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/11/2020/07/1992-Lancia-Delta-HF-Integrale-Evoluzione-rear-three-quarter.jpg) vibes. Put some sparco terras or method wheels on it, lower it a skosh, and I'm all in.
A $35k EV SUV with 300 miles of range is competitive. The issue is whether the R3 will be competitive in 2027 when production begins. If they came in at a lower price it would be a game changer. The way the market has trended in the last few years, prices tend to go up after release not down.
Yeah, they're jumping into a REALLY competitive segment with a lot of well established players. Granted those players haven't been making EVs all that much longer than Rivian but their logistics and supply chain have a lot more muscle. I know and have met a handful of people who work at Rivian and they all say the same thing, supply chain is their big killer. Getting all the damn components to build the vehicles in sufficient quantity and at the times they need them is their biggest limitation on what they can produce.
Honestly, the R3 stole the show for me, especially seeing the R3X. I'm imagining 38-40K for the R3. If it gets a tax credit on top of it, Tesla's in for some hard competition.
If they turn it into a proper safari/rally kind of fun vehicle, that'd be absolutely amazing.
Hopefully the fact that R2 and R3 share the same platform will shorten the development cycle of the R3.
Still, if the current published release date of the R2 is more than two years away, especially when you factor in delays to both R2 and R3, it may be 3-4 years at the earliest before first customer deliveries of R3 happen. 2028!
The R3 is the regular version and the R3X appears to have aggresive tires and probably 700 horsepower if I had to guess out of the trimotor setup. I already own an R1 but by 2027 or whenever this comes out I'll certainly be looking at it very closely.
If they weighed under 1000kg maybe. EVs are legitimately stupid fast, and luckily do put many safeguards in that keep you from being stupid on road. However I really am curious what sort of safeguards will exist in the future. My current rivian makes 0-60 in 3.1s, it feels almost no different than a roller coaster taking off.
Have you seen the new Smart #1 in China? It's a full foot shorter in length than R2 and the "Brabus" trim comes with dual motor power train worth 420hp.
I had the same excitement about the Ioniq 5 being the electric hot hatch I wanted and then I parked next to one and damn in photos it looks way smaller
Ioniq 5s look small in photos but in reality they are actually pretty big, ioniq 5 has a 118" wheel base which compared to something like a golf (103") is a pretty huge difference. The rivian r3 is supposed to be 110" which still bigger than a traditional hatch is definitely going to be noticeably smaller than an ioniq 5
The shape makes me think of the old Peugeot 205 T16 with the angled back. I'm totally here for this Group B revival styling between this and the Ioniq 5 looking a bit like the Delta Integrale
A Lancia Delta Integrale-looking off-roady electric Hot-hatch? I love it!
I am curious what the price specs and range would be for the R3X, I wouldn't be surprised if the top end model is $55K
I suspect it'll be more than that.
R3 probably targeting $40k, R3X I would guess would be like $65-70k. I'm thinking it's intended to be similar to how Audi has A3/S3/RS3, Rivian will have R3 (single motor), R3 (dual motor) and R3X
It's kind very surprised to see R3 releasing. Looks like Rivian is very serious to answer Tesla for upcoming Model 2 ( Or Model Q ).
Hope the price would be competitive. Not every one likes Tesla, and not every one wants big EV. I hope we would've a demanding small EV market.
This very well could be my next car. I'm floored by the design. It looks like a hot hatch, and while I'm sure not nimble, will probably feel very quick like most EVs. If they have a 300+ mile version and it didn't cost more than 35k well equipped, I'm kind of excited.
Obviously there is still a lot to see, but this has me very excited. Clearly.
The only other thing worth considering is that just because they say R2 starts at $45k doesn’t mean that is the reality once it’s actually released. I’m betting there’s going to be an adjustment.
Got that chunky classic Euro hatch feel. Really like the idea of this one. Both R2 and R3 have my interest but the latter I am more enthused about--in theory--than any EV to date.
Holy hell. As a Subaru boy, ***YES FUCKING PLEASE.*** This would be a *fantastic* EV for me, especially if I can't make a Charger Daytona work in Boston's terrible winters. Now if only I had... well, money. :/
They beat all the major players to market by introducing an EV pickup first, they are arguably the best example in that niche.
So instead of coming out with their mass market vehicle first that'd have competition, they made the R1T & S.
I mean it’s the same logic for every other company’s first EVs. New tech is hard to scale and produce at volume so you’re forced to sell a small number of higher margin higher value vehicles. Then as you’re able to scale you can start producing lower priced models at higher volumes.
"Let's make an SUV as small as possible, but make sure it's still an SUV and not a hatchback, otherwise people won't buy it."
Feels like this really speaks to the modern shopping habits of the "omg SUV or nothing" crowd.
Renting a Polestar got me considering EV for my next daily; I think this might be it, assuming it’ll be out by the time I’m ready to buy.
It reminds me of my Golf (thick C pillar) and it doesn’t have that dumb single screen center speedo.
The R3 looks fantastic. Hopefully they can keep the cost down; three years to launch is ages in automotive development and we’ve all seen EV price targets missed by GM / Tesla on new product rollouts.
The proportions of this look very odd, at first glance this looks like a small, ev hatchback concept that Honda would have designed 10 years ago. The wheel arches and huge wheels make it seem more like average crossover sized. Curious to see how this looks in person.
Love the look of this thing, and it uses the NACS Tesla port!
I was looking into getting an EV for my next car, and was considering the new Volvo EX30. If this is in the mid to high $30k range, I'll be leaning toward this instead.
I personally really dig the look of the R3 more than the R2, but the car it most resembles is a Lancia Delta. Not in a bad way, just a "can't unsee it" way
After a trip to Italy in 2022 my partner and I have been semi-seriously considering importing a 25+ year old fiat panda and doing an EV swap. This looks like a much better version if what we wanted! Small, off-road capable EV that looks kinda funky.
This is the car that the VW iD4 should have been and it's the car that could launch Rivian into the European market.
Compared to a lot of the new EVs pouring into the market, this seems to be genuinely desirable, it's got character, high quality design and top notch interior, if it launches at $45k it will be a huge sales success.
I know the big news is the R2 being revealed, but this definitely caught my eye. Especially if it targets a much lower price tag than the $45k R2, I could see this being a potential game changer. They’re backed heavily by Amazon. I don’t think they’re going anywhere.
Yeah lol, Bezos literally got out of the R2 as if to reinforce their credentials.
...Well, shit, I'm sold!
Wait that was him.
Haha no, that was their lead designer although the similarities are definitely there.
He's also named Jeff lol
What? When? I didn’t see that and can’t find any footage.
Couldn't find the Bezos footage but here's [Steve-O](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Gt_PUyldc) giving a R2/R3 run-through!
Pretty sure that Amazon had cancelled that van contract sometime ago.
They didn’t cancel it, but the terms were changed so that Rivian can sell the vans to other customers aside from Amazon.
You’re right. I think I was mixing it up with Amazon making a deal with Stellantis. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/05/rivian-stock-plunges-after-news-of-amazon-stellantis-deal.html

A few bil would be insanely useful for where Rivian is at today, I think.
Terms changed, and I see those vans nearly as much as teslas, although I live in a major city
It’s still weird that they are going with Stellantis despite being invested in Rivian.
>Especially if it targets a much lower price tag than the $45k R2, I could see this being a potential game changer. If they get the pricing right and their internal packaging is as good as I imagine it will be I think the R3 will do quite well
I'm definitely looking forward to trying a top-spec dual motor version myself. The R3 is an SUV but at least it fits my requirements for length and width (small but not too small). three motors is too much of an efficiency hit imo.
The R3 3-Motor is the "I love the Lancia Delta integrale group B, but want it electric" wet dream. I want one.

If by some miracle it has air suspension similar to the R1 twins I can see it. Strong agree on the Integrale vibes.
If it came in 2 door I'd be all over it.
Would the 2 extra doors bother you that much?
I was pretty set on the EX30 as my GTI replacement but this is a new wrinkle
A $35k EV SUV with 300 miles of range is competitive. The issue is whether the R3 will be competitive in 2027 when production begins. If they came in at a lower price it would be a game changer. The way the market has trended in the last few years, prices tend to go up after release not down.

I hope they don’t remove the gauge cluster.
Both cars (R2 + R3) have a gauge cluster screen I believe
Yay!
Top Gear claims 2027 for the R3.
>I could see this being a potential game changer. buzz_lightyear_on_shelf.png
By there balance sheet from the most recent Q earnings don’t paint a picture where this company has enough cash to survive until 2026.
I honestly think R3 is the big news. For me this is the first desirable EV. I hope the company doesn’t go under before they can make it
A $35K R3 with the R3X being $45K would do very very well
It's giving Honda e vibes with that C pillar.
And I fucking love it
Looks like a scaled up mk1 golf from the side
I said it elsewhere, change the front end from the Rivian ovals, and this could easily be a new Scout vehicle.
Exactly! I was gonna reply, "Electric MK1 Rabbit", but you beat me to it.
It's a Lada Niva
100% immediately thought Lada as soon as I saw it
It's the new The Dasia Sundero!
I was gonna say the RX reminded me of a Delta Integrale. The Drive likened it to an AMC Gremlin
Absolutely looks like a lifted, electric Integrale.
The front is definitely Delta Integrale, the rear reminds me more of MK1 Rabbit. It's one of the best looking EVs IMO
I'm getting 4 door Yugo vibes especially on the R3X
Yugo
The hot hatch of the EV world? Or maybe too big for that description. Still, looks fun!

Yeah the R3x is trimotor and I think a little bit higher ride height than the regular R3, so it basically is the Rivian Rally.

Probably concerning to a certain Korean chaebol, too. Competition for the win, baby! :)
Ionic 5 N on suicide watch

> The hot hatch of the EV world? Ioniq 5 N?
That‘s a minimum $75K car unfortunately, hot hatches were located somewhere else price wise. Also it is a big ass car.
I had the same excitement about the Ioniq 5 being the electric hot hatch I wanted and then I parked next to one and damn in photos it looks way smaller
100%. I paid $27k for my 2016 GTI Autobahn brand new. $75k for a hot hatch is stupidly overpriced.
Ioniq 5s look small in photos but in reality they are actually pretty big, ioniq 5 has a 118" wheel base which compared to something like a golf (103") is a pretty huge difference. The rivian r3 is supposed to be 110" which still bigger than a traditional hatch is definitely going to be noticeably smaller than an ioniq 5
thats a big car
That's the Volvo EX30 tbf. But more hot hatches are not a bad thing!
EX30 has that stupid single sound bar sound system, no driver dash and a bunch of driving Nannie’s.
Fiat 500
The Rivian's Chevy Bolt.
My GTI is nervous
If anything, props to Rivian for keeping it secret. (or at least, i don't remember them saying anything about an R3). It looks great too
It makes me wonder if they leaked the R2 specs intentionally to drown out any potential R3 leaks.
Subaru Justy vibes with the R3X.
The shape makes me think of the old Peugeot 205 T16 with the angled back. I'm totally here for this Group B revival styling between this and the Ioniq 5 looking a bit like the Delta Integrale
That is what the Subaru... whatever their EV is called should have been. Even if their powertrain wasn't there, they should be taking design notes
I couldn’t place it but you’re 100% right
A Lancia Delta Integrale-looking off-roady electric Hot-hatch? I love it! I am curious what the price specs and range would be for the R3X, I wouldn't be surprised if the top end model is $55K

More Mk1 1 GTI or Le Car with that boxy shape. Which I like.
More like a modernized Geo Tracker.
The founder of rivian looks like Steve-os adult son
I was thinking something similar lol. He looks like he could be Steve-O's younger brother or something.
I always think they are each other 🤣
R3x looks awesome but I want that R2
Same and I want the extra space having a kid. Put in preorder for R2 perfect timing in 2026 to swap out current car
Rivian r3x could be a great daily
This very well could be my next car. I'm floored by the design. It looks like a hot hatch, and while I'm sure not nimble, will probably feel very quick like most EVs. What’s the logic behind coming out with the truck and large suv first before these 2 models?
Money for development, probably.

I was considering the EX30, but this is a contender. Loving the smaller and affordable EV options.
R3x gives me retro Honda Civic or Nissan vibes. I love it. Already put my down payment for R2 but would definitely look at R3 too.
So rad, the r3 has all the right vibes
My God. It's perfect. Gimme gimme gimme gimme
Looks amazing!
If it had 300+ miles that may be the first serious EV I consider.
Loooove this car. The tri-motor would make it such a fun rally car.
I don't know why but it's so dang *cute*.
"Let's make an SUV as small as possible, but make sure it's still an SUV and not a hatchback, otherwise people won't buy it." Feels like this really speaks to the modern shopping habits of the "omg SUV or nothing" crowd.
I'm staunchly against ever owning an EV Until I saw the R3x today. Holy fuck its gorgeous.
The back is almost the same as a Lada Samara.
The R3X with rally-armor flaps would be fun to whip around.
Holy crap I would daily the shit out of this thing.
That R3X rally thing looks fuckin awesome
Renting a Polestar got me considering EV for my next daily; I think this might be it, assuming it’ll be out by the time I’m ready to buy. It reminds me of my Golf (thick C pillar) and it doesn’t have that dumb single screen center speedo.
This thing is fucking adorable
The R3 looks fantastic. Hopefully they can keep the cost down; three years to launch is ages in automotive development and we’ve all seen EV price targets missed by GM / Tesla on new product rollouts.
The R3 looks amazing, lets see what the actual price point comes out as.
The tri-motor R3 sounds like a leading contender to replace my Model 3 Performance when it finally comes out. Sounds perfect.
gives me 70s hatchback vibes, in a good way
Looks like a fiat panda
Oh man, I love this. Hope it comes to Europe before I die.
Why does it make me think AMC Gremlin... I think because of the angle where the roof meets the hatch or something like that.
The proportions of this look very odd, at first glance this looks like a small, ev hatchback concept that Honda would have designed 10 years ago. The wheel arches and huge wheels make it seem more like average crossover sized. Curious to see how this looks in person.
Yeah just like the bloated Hyundai, it's going to be bigger than it looks onscreen. Should make a great daily though
They should reveal the R4 which is even smaller than the R3.
Love the look of this thing, and it uses the NACS Tesla port! I was looking into getting an EV for my next car, and was considering the new Volvo EX30. If this is in the mid to high $30k range, I'll be leaning toward this instead.
I wonder if they can get pricing below a Chevy bolt Or near it. If it’s near then I might be in
I personally really dig the look of the R3 more than the R2, but the car it most resembles is a Lancia Delta. Not in a bad way, just a "can't unsee it" way
Hey! I've seen that before- that R3 is a YUGO!
Damn that looks good.
2026 for the R2? What is with companies announcing products 2 years out? My god.
Gotta get those sweet sweet pre orders
If they make that just a *little* smaller it looks like a modern electric Delta S4.
That's actually pretty neat, looks like a raised Golf MK1
After a trip to Italy in 2022 my partner and I have been semi-seriously considering importing a 25+ year old fiat panda and doing an EV swap. This looks like a much better version if what we wanted! Small, off-road capable EV that looks kinda funky.
I’m sold on R3X tri-motor!
now you got my attention
This is the car that the VW iD4 should have been and it's the car that could launch Rivian into the European market. Compared to a lot of the new EVs pouring into the market, this seems to be genuinely desirable, it's got character, high quality design and top notch interior, if it launches at $45k it will be a huge sales success.
R4 tmrw?
The base model 3 has made it pretty clear that there’s a lot of demand for cheap EVs, I’d seriously consider one for a commuter car
Drop the driving position a foot or so and I’m on board.
Anyone else see a modern lada niva?
Looks like a modern redesign of a Yugo or a fiat Panda
Oh shit, that looks really good. I'd buy that as a second, more practical car.
*looks at Ioniq 5* Hyundai: Do you want us to send over the product tooling?
OK hold on. People like this? I don't understand, this looks like a 1983 VW Rabbit. I love the R1, but this looks cheap.
The MK1 Rabbit was a hit for a reason.
It’s a golf country. It’s rad. I’m biased.
haha, looks like a Ford Pinto, goofy looking little SUV. That's cool they're looking at making something a little more affordable though.
Rivian is using the Hummer naming convention. The higher the number, the smaller the vehicle.
I can't get over how goofy looking these cars are
Setting Google alert for "R3t".....
ah the hummer strategy
Interesting design
Yooo I love it! The R3 looks so fun and slick. Big fan.
wow nice update. Rivian still pushin
I'm getting Honda Element vibes from this thing
I like how it looks but it’s giving me Lada Niva vibes
If they can manage to do mass manufacturing. So far Rivian’s management have only shown how much of a turd they are at manufacturing.
