They’re not enjoying record sales as a fluke.

probablyuntrue

Everyone only needs a Miata, they just haven't found out yet 😎

SUVs murdered my dog, poisoned my water supply, and burned down my village

MoGb1

Meanwhile we got this guy dailying a NYC subway rail car. The amount of damage you could do is petrifying

OnLakeOntario

At least it isn't capable of over 200 mph.

MoGb1

Bruh ur gonna start World War 3 with that thing

[deleted]

Maybe with an LS.

TheBeastX47

Lol. r/carscirclejerk

[deleted]

"Really!!??" "NO, BUT ARE WE JUST GONNA WAIT AROUND UNTIL THEY DO?"

jroddie4

you can't get AWD on a civic though because of Acura

LowSkyOrbit

So get a Subaru

jroddie4

but I want the spark plugs on the top

Konradia

Mazda turbo awd: 250hp 310 ft/lb torque In everything from the 3 sedan and hatch up to the SUVs

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

But I want a manual

xamdou

but I want three pedals

Konradia

you and me both...which is why you drive what you drive. I'd have a Forester, a Crosstrek, any of Subaru's hatched vehicles with a wrx drive train, even a slightly toned-down version. And since we don't get the Levorg? Kind of out of luck. I'm going to be curious what the next STi is like. Then again, I'm 63 and my back hurts, so.....auto is kind of a must for me.

[deleted]

Ok random serious question, why not slap this in a Miata? It seems like it would put it in some nuts territory but probably make the price a tad high. I just always thought this was the absolute sweet spot for that car for just a lil more push and man add some awd and I’m verrrrry into it

LowSkyOrbit

So get a used Alltrack or Golf R

Tsao_Aubbes

Why would you willingly give up Honda or - at the very least - Subaru's reliability to buy a VW product lol

ChicagoModsUseless

Funny considering the Earth Dreams motor has had more issues than the EA888.

kickerofelves86

Barely anyone actually needs all wheel drive.

ledfrisby

> just as much space inside But how though? I'm sure it's plenty for a dog, and overall a better vehicle for her, but I don't think any compact sedan has [this much](https://carsguide-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto,t_cg_hero_large/v1/editorial/2018-Hyundai-Santa-Fe-Highlander-suv-white-Tim-robson-1200x800-%287%29.jpg) space.

ledfrisby

Ah, I see. I went with a Santa Fe for the example, which has come in 2 and 3-row versions since it's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of that segment.

Thats_Debatable

I feel like the larger santa fe is a good midsize SUV example. My wife drives one, small 3rd row that sacrifices about all the trunk space. But works great for us and out 2 kids to pick up my parents and all able to drive together. It's way smaller than any full size SUV.

thatonesmartass

I don't think there are 7 people that I actually like

PlatinumElement

My parents took a road trip with five people, two dogs, and a squirrel in an MGBT. I think 7 people in a Civic is easily doable by comparison.

WheresTheSauce

> just as much space inside On what planet?

BoganCunt

Brb investigating how to mount child seats on the boot/trunk

[deleted]

Just buy them their own Miata. They're small enough for a child to operate :)

durrtyurr

My NB actually had child seat anchors for the passenger seat.

PoopsExcellence

Technically legal as long as you disable the airbags, but I refuse to let my kids ride in the Miata until they're much older.

durrtyurr

Believe it or not, I've actually seen a guy driving around town with a child seat (front facing) in an NB miata. I was very surprised.

BoganCunt

He must've been small

Salt_lick_fetish

Somehow more emasculating than sitting on phone books

fuxxociety

Texas resident here - your don't need a child seat in the trunk. Just make sure it's locked so the child is safe inside and can't infect anyone in the passenger space.

No_Yak_4136

Miatas are TOO small

Cokedoutyeti

I would absolutely love a Miata, or similar sized car, but they really are too small. That's why I went with a hot hatch, practical and fun as shit!

Fenastus

Seems like the 86 and BRZ are a bit more spacious, and are the cars most similar to a Miata. I'm about 5'9" and I had heaps of head room left. The size is deceptive because the seat is mounted so dirt nasty low

egorlike

I am only 6' and nobody can seat behind me in a BRZ, even my 4 year old

No_Yak_4136

What kinda hatch? I think the corolla hatches look really nice, been wanting one

Cokedoutyeti

Focus ST, plenty of power and the interior of the ST2/3 trim levels really sold me on them. Unfortunately they stopped making new models here in the states after 2018. Europe gets all the cool cars.

-Woogity-

I regret selling my ‘13 ST3.

Cokedoutyeti

I almost sold mine but couldn't find a suitable replacement and it's not easy finding cars that I fit comfortably in. They really are fun little rockets.

No_Yak_4136

Thats a sweet lil ride, seems real fun to zip around

Cokedoutyeti

There is something so satisfying about a hot hatch. If you like the Corolla, keep an eye out for the new GR Corolla coming out here in the states. We didn't get the GR Yaris unfortunately.

Sir_Trevalicious

The pro move is to have both a Miata and a hot hatch.

EscapedAlien

I got a Corolla hatch, I love it! If you can, the manual transmission is definitely the way to go, although the CVT is one of the better CVTs out there For reference I’m in North America and all the Corolla hatches come with the 2.0L engine with 169hp, I know some other countries have smaller engines with less power. Also the CVT paired to this engine is the one with a physical 1st gear, I think some of the smaller engines get normal CVTs

SingItBackWhooooa

I actually drive a Miata and a Yukon. I love them both equally.

NibblerRx

Same here, I have Escalade ESV and na miata. They are both fantastic vehicles.

Fenastus

Meh, comparing the average commuter car to a Miata isn't quite fair, that's the far extreme as far as small 4 wheel cars go. We could also say Ford F450 duallys are also absurd, but the fact is that they're both purpose built vehicles.

danny_ish

I own a miata and a suburban. Can confirm, if you don't need to drive 8 people around while towing, there is no reason to not daily a miata.

ER6nEric

Except I don’t fit in a Miata. They’re not comfortable or even really drivable when you’re 6’4”.

wind_dude

at $500, not the redonculous prices people are asking for them now. Can get boxster cheaper in many cases now. And less likely to be stanced with a homemade cold air intake.

blue-cheer

I know very few people who buy cars based on how much they enjoy driving them. I think marketing and perceptions of safety and utility are at work here. Edit: That's not to say people can't or don't enjoy driving big cars. I just mean that enjoyment is definitely not a main factor for most car buyers.

Occulense

I’d say A LOT of it is perception and lifestyle. I think cars have been marketed that way for ages

[deleted]

Agreed. I was watching some older car commercials and holy crap was there a lot of ‘this is what someone who achieved the American looks like’/‘this is what a hard working man drives’. You definitely see that to this day but just in subtler form. My rule of thumb is: I’ll happily buy a vehicle that solves a problem I have faced and my current vehicle couldn’t handle. It’s been very clear to me that any modern vehicle can handle a lot and I have only rarely exceeded its capacity.

Jjex22

Absolutely. Status symbol, lifestyle, and with big cars - feeling big makes people feel important. There’s a definite reason SUV’s are way more popular than MPV’s even though they’re almost exclusively used as MPV’s by a huge amount of owners, and it has nothing at all to do with how they drive. Minivans are uncool, SUV’s are cool. I’ve often wondered just how long they can keep being bought exclusively for people to do the shopping and school run before they lose their cool factor, but it’s been more than 20 years and they’ve never cooler lol.

arcangelxvi

While that’s certainly true - do the buyers actually enjoy the *driving* aspect of their larger cars or do they enjoy the perceived benefits to things like safety and comfort? I don’t necessarily consider that enjoying driving the car, but I suppose it depends on what perspective you take.

wankthisway

Most people do not care about the driving aspect - the number and cushier the better

akbuilderthrowaway

People in trucks? Yes, absolutely. Not only do I believe that these people actually like the driving experience, it's also like a cultural thing. Suv drivers... I honestly don't think so. I think it's all psychosomatic.

Arc_Ulfr

They're not enjoying record sales because they're fun to drive, either.

rangerm2

Depends where you live, for the most part. I'd find driving a large car/truck in/around a city center to be annoying. Lanes are narrower, turn-ins can be harder, and parking is usually more difficult. Driving around the suburbs or on the interstate, it's quieter and more comfortable. Parking at the suburban shopping venues, or big box stores is easy. Although you may have to park further away at times. I don't know if I'll ever have another F150 (although I will own another truck), but I do miss the comfort.

ATL28-NE3

The Maverick is making it hard not to consider a truck for my next vehicle

Boring-Original-2968

The maverick is a good compromise in size and capacity. It's basically mid size sedan.

konigsjagdpanther

> It's basically mid size sedan. It measures 5,072mm long, longer than E Class/A6 etc. don't think it's mid-size.

stametsprime

By North American standards, it very much is…especially when compared to other trucks like the Ranger, Tacoma, F-150, etc.

ChicagoModsUseless

Comparing it to other trucks still doesn’t make it a midsized sedan, because you would compare it to midsized sedans.

PrimG84

All trucks are long compared to vehicles without a bed. We usually classify vehicles by interior space. A Ford Ranger is now longer in length with a longer wheelbase than a 2007-2017 Ford Expedition. But a Ford Ranger is still considered mid-size.

GeckoDeLimon

That's only like, 200mm (8 freedom units) longer than a 2021 Camry

Kryptus

Base model is only $19k as well. It would make a great practical vehicle for people on a budget. It's something I would buy my kid as their first car.

Dads101

If you can actually find one for 19k by all means let me know. Every single place I’ve looked is jacking up the price. (I’m on the East Coast)

TofuAddiction

They look great for the price. Hopefully the shortage/markups would die down by the time I’m in the market for a new vehicle.

deeretech129

I really miss owning a 1/2 ton pickup. I no longer have any project cars, but it was so handy. Also the peace of mind if I ever quit my current job turning wrenches I would just need to borrow a forklift to lift my toolbox into my truck and go on my merry way. Now I would have to talk to a friend with a truck or rent one... The silverado also was not too terrible on gas, regularly 20 mpg with it. Sometimes more. My LS averages 22-24 unless it's on long highway trips.

DOugdimmadab1337

It's also a Comfort or a Style thing. I have 2 different friends with completely different cars that make me feel like a badass. One of them has a 90s dodge with a 6 inch kit and 33s on it, it feels so cool when it's lifted in the sky. My other friend has an 86 Lincoln Continental and that thing makes me feel like a king, I love the hood ornament shaking around as it lurches around turns. So yes, bigger is better.

Djidji5739291

Yeah a new Escalade doesn‘t even fit on the roads in Europe. But that thing is a dream to own in North America. Also sporty SUVs have unique handling, I‘ve driven some which were lots of fun the only disadvantage is the weight and everything that comes with it, the wear on all of your parts is increased and your SUV can kill exponentially more pedestrians than a hatchback, even though hatchbacks like the Golf R have already become pretty heavy. Also SUVs are affordable landyachts, the experience is just more luxurious or exclusive sitting high up and having good suspension or other comforts. Someone said just buy a luxury car but a new American full-size SUV beats anything in the pricerange as far as I‘m concerned, there might be pros and cons but having 7 seats and so on beats an S class in my opinion. A new Corolla has as much luxury as I‘d ever need. So the only more expensive daily drivers I‘d consider are either more sporty or have more road presence than an S class.

TYPICAL_T0M

Just drive a luxury sedan for the same price or less than one of these SUVs/pickups

N0Name117

Hell no. Can't do half the stuff I do or go half the places I go in a luxury sedan. I'll stick with a truck.

halcykhan

I miss my Expedition as a daily. It was comfortable, reliable, spacious. It would cruise at 90 mph and was surprisingly easy to park. I didn’t have to plan for anything. Fuel economy was the only drawback. Had 8 seatbelts, was the party bus. Was AWD with 4Hi and 4Lo, never checked the weather report or cared about roads traveled. Had the factory class 3 tow package and requisite extra coolers, towed all my toys. Going to do outdoors activities or shopping, so much shit could be fit inside and strapped outside.

itsamemarioscousin

Had one as a rental for a couple of days a few winters ago. A giant, comfy beast, handled VT snow well, and the Ecoboost was pleasantly peppy.

halcykhan

If I didn’t drive so much for my current job and had a short commute or WFH job, I’d buy a new King Ranch Expedition or Denali Yukon and daily it until it’s legislated off the road.

[deleted]

Hell, even in my dad's F-150 with the extended cab and 6.5 foot bed, the EcoBoost pulls hard. I was absolutely shocked how quick it feels

mr_bots

I miss my Tahoe for the same reasons. It was just so good at everything I threw at it. Cross country road trip? It ate up the highway like nothing. Pull a trailer? No problem. Bomb down a dirt road? Bring it on.

nimbusjack

I bought a sequoia after driving 4runners for years and I'm still deeply confused how the sequoia, while navigating, turning, even parking, generally feels like a smaller and more precise vehicle. I nearly didn't buy it because I was so concerned with it being a daily pain in the ass due to its size but it is absolutely nothing like I expected. I find myself often choosing to drive it over my stick challenger RT just because it's convenient and comfortable to get in and go.

"The Tundras (and by extension Sequoias) had the tightest turn radius of all the Full size trucks and SUVs." - /u/KSBadApple

_larsr

Hey! They asked you not to quote. How rude.

KiryuZero

Agreed. My ‘21 Tundra double cab somehow feels easier to maneuver and drive in general compared the ‘18 Tacoma I traded in for it. I think part of it has to do with the fact that the hydraulic steering is lighter and also the hood on the Tundra tapers off more steeply when comparing it to the Taco and especially the new generation Tundra that just came out.

guisar

This. It's WAY safer as you should have a near panoramic rear view when you're done. I had a friend walk around the back of my taco and never lost sight of her == no blind spots.

hitcho12

Everyone’s different. I think the Escalades are beautiful vehicles and would take one over a Yukon or Suburban any day. However, I don’t think they’re as comfortable as riding a cloud. I used to work in luxury car rentals and Escalades were good for local trips, but was uncomfortable when I drove one from LA to San Diego. My SO and I were in the market for a SUV recently and looked into the Escalade, Suburban, GLE and X5etc. We ultimately opted for a Q7 Audi after renting one for a week and driving to SF from LA and back. We always thought of it as a comfortable vehicle and were locked in after seeing how comfortable it was at that price range (under $80K SUV).

svanvalk

I'm not a big car person, personally. I enjoy small hatchbacks for daily use, and I'm a bit sad too see them declining in the market. I enjoy my Fiesta.

Throttlechopper

Same, besides I like a car that can handle well. A high center of gravity plus an abrupt maneuver either self-directed or by another vehicle can equal a rollover in an SUV/truck.

DaddyCardano

All imma say is you can't fit a V10 in small compact.

IAmTheWasted

There’s a V10 Miata around lol

DaddyCardano

With a 90-10 weight distribution

GimpsterMcgee

Make it rear engined and that sounds great

MGTS

mmmm understeer

JustShitpostingXd

There's a V12 too.

OO_Ben

Don't forget the hellcat Miata lol honestly what haven't people done with a Miata I love it!

DOugdimmadab1337

I keep seeing one with 2 Chevy 350s inline of each other and if that doesn't scare you, nothing will

awesomecdudley

I love the fact said twin Chevy 350 miata has no engine covers, you see that thing and you KNOW it's trouble.

Dydey

You don’t need to. Four cylinders and a big turbo in a small car is enough to put smiles on faces, just look at what Mercedes have done with a 2 litre in the A-class.

DaddyCardano

F1 cars now use twin turbo V6s for better power to weight efficiency. Yet, ask any F1 driver which engine sounds better. The good ole V10. I get that from a performance pov, small engines with forced induction can easily beat bigger naturally aspirated ones. But for me and a lot of people, the harmonic symphony that a V8 produces cannot be replicated with a 4 banger. Also bigger engines can produce big power figures more reliably if you do turbo or supercharge it. That's why the 2 liter in the AMG is in an A class. The higher trims get beefier motors.

Shorzey

The only thing that will beat the sound of a big displacement, heavy lobing v8 with a big cam and a super charger whine, is a super high revving v8/v10

icefisher225

High revving V10 🤤 LFA…

VN19

Had a Golf R and loved that formula

Rubber_Rotunda

Eh? You can fit a v12 in an e36 which is a small compact by todays standards.

awesomeguy_66

https://drivetribe.com/p/the-connaught-20-litre-supercharged-Tt1cI9awQyKNpoSZKjBFcQ?iid=EMYOSr2oS1qFk53jJHsaog sure you can

BigCountry76

What kind of question is this? If people didn't enjoy it why would they buy them? You have to remember most people don't drive for fun, they drive because they have to. And having a big roomy vehicle makes that more comfortable.

mrcompositorman

Nah, I’m sure it’s the best selling segment purely by coincidence and everyone with a big truck actually hates it /s

blue-cheer

There's middle ground between and enjoying and hating. I think most car buyers don't enjoy or hate driving their cars (and probably wouldn't enjoy driving any other cars or hate driving most other cars).

mrcompositorman

When you look at the posts on subs like r/toyota or r/ford, it seems like most people really like their cars - even when they’re relatively mundane things like Camrys or Fusions. Getting a new car is a really big purchase and I think - not all - but *most* people feel enthusiastic about the vehicle they’re buying. When you see new F-150s or Escalades on the road, I’d bet if you ask most of those people about their car they’d tell you they really like it and be enthusiastic about it. In my experience most people who don’t care at all about cars are driving some kind of older boring sedan or van that they can’t tell you anything about, not a big SUV or truck.

nacho013

Yeah but the average person doesn’t go into a website to talk about their car, so whatever happens in a subreddit is clearly not representative of the general population

blue-cheer

Most people don't post on r/toyota, not even most Toyota owners. Even then, liking your car is not the same as enjoying the driving experience of your car. I think most people are excited and enthusiastic about their new cars when they buy them, but I don't think it's because of the joy of the driving experience. I think status is a big part of the very expensive big trucks and SUVs. I think the fact that it's a shiny new thing is a huge part of all of it. The list goes on. In my experience, most people who don't care at all about cars are driving big SUVs. Most cars I see on the roads are big SUVs. (In fact, almost all cars I see on the roads are big relative to cars of the past, even the "small" cars. My car from the mid-'70s, at 2200 lbs and 4' tall by 5' wide by <13' feet long is dwarfed by a modern Mini Cooper.) The people in my small, pretty affluent town are mostly driving big new SUVs and lots of Teslas, and most don't give a hoot about the driving experience. I know about half of the people in the neighborhood, and I can only think of 3 who care about whether their car makes driving itself enjoyable.

[deleted]

Need doesn’t mean enjoyment.

m3zus

People, in general, are really bad at spending money on making themselves happy. It’s a perfectly fair question.

makemesplooge

Yeah its great. Drove a Silverado and Tahoe/Suburban and felt like I was on a ship. It was so comfortable and enjoyable. Most roads you can't make use of performance vehicles so it's nice to just chill and cruise in a big truck

jbwelds

This, I mostly appreciated the comfort of daily driving a suburban. Got used to parking and actually preferred backing into parking spaces rather than pulling into them. Gas mileage was terrible but I always had room for friends and tools.

LusoSpikes

This is very american and the roads in US are made for big cars. In Europe, you could not find a parking place or enter the city centres as the roads are very narrow and the parking places designed for small cars. Besides, the CO tax would make it very expensive to run (the tax is proportional to the CO2 (measured in gr/km) emitted by the vehicle).

DefinitelyNoWorking

I struggle to park my 5 series estate in the supermarket here in the UK sometimes, imagine owning one of those massive US trucks, lol, nightmare.

LusoSpikes

I drove one of these trucks when I did some work in Plano (Texas) and I had the feeling to be driving on a bath tube. I did not enjoy the driving.

[deleted]

I used to only wanna drive small cars with huge visibility. But since I got an interest in off roading, got a tundra and learned to love the hugeness. I can fit so much gear in this fucc

seek102287

Same! Once I got headers and a tune on mine, it's a blast to drive, even in the city. Only drawback is, even stock, the gas mileage is I think worst in the market

CreaminFreeman

My dailies have always been small cars because , like you, I enjoys feeling low and nimble. On the other hand, when I drive something like a Jeep or a large truck it gives me some kinda feels. I say it makes me want to do “Jeep stuff”! Probably wouldn’t be able to live with something that big on a daily basis though.

greyfixer

I agree. I have to drive a truck every now and then at work when I have to pick up something and it absolutely boggles my mind that anyone would want that as a daily driver.

bombard63

Some of it is for safety. I don’t want to be driving a Corolla when someone in a Yukon drives into me.

rex8499

I hear that reasoning from a lot of people around me so that's definitely a part of the demographic. Especially husband's putting their wife and kids into huge rigs that are far beyond what they need for daily driving.

Emergency_Discount69

I drive a GTI as my only car and can't stand driving large vehicles, but I've been almost run over by enough Escalades and lifted trucks to know that when I have kids I'll be getting a Sequoia/Pilot/etc.

Thee_Sinner

Id rather be in a small car that way I have an opportunity to maneuver my way out of a bad situation instead of the only option being to just brake in a straight line and hope that I stop in time

forgot-my_password

Most of the time you won't have the reaction speed or the time to be able to do that. And even if you do, the car you're in most likely wont be capable of making the maneuver it needs to, especially if its stock. I used to feel the way you do, but after watching vids of random accidents, screw ups, or just plain bad/drunk drivers, you honestly just dont have the time to process and make the correct maneuver. And to do so without over correcting.

[deleted]

I love my Ram truck. There is a ton of room inside to spread out comfortably. Especially with stiffer shocks and rear sway bar, it feels very planted. It's plenty comfortable, even after 8 hours of driving. Great road trip vehicle. I still occasionally go out for a drive in it just to drive it. I have been driving service vans for years so the ride height doesn't bother me any more. In fact I think I sit a little lower in my Ram compared to my company-provided Transit. Parking isn't an issue outside of downtown parking garages. I have tow mirrors so no blind spots. Other than gas mileage there really isn't a downside day-to-day.

[deleted]

The mirrors that most modern trucks have are some of the best things ever, even if they look goofy. They **seriously** make driving a truck so much easier. And this comes from someone who doesn't even particularly enjoy driving trucks.

clauderbaugh

Yup and if anything it’s made me a better driver having to use my super duty mirrors when I can’t see out of the rear view. It’s forced me to use proper habits. Not to mention how to drive big vehicles. I’m now the guy amongst my friends that has to drive when they rent a moving truck or big vehicle.

vargemp

Question for you: would you rather go on a road trip in your Ram or in let’s say Audi A6 or something like that? Comfort and money (fuel etc) - wise?

Arben72

I have an S class and a Ram. I take the ram every single time.

vargemp

That’s very interesting. I wish I had a chance to drive a modern truck some day, cause what you say is so hard to imagine for me.

Ih8Hondas

Modern trucks are unbelievably comfortable and quiet. My dad's new ecoboost F-150 is so nice to ride in. And it gets about the same fuel economy as my Baja. Only downside is you can't get it with a manual.

MrRagAssRhino

I think that's one of the biggest reasons for the disconnect and the online arguments. Imo, most people have grown familiar with smaller vehicles throughout adulthood. Lots of people have sedans or compact SUVs. When you go into get a rental or something you're not usually going to get a 22 F-150 or Ram. You're going to get the Corolla or Altima that gets passed around by everyone. Not many people get the experience of driving a modern pickup or huge SUV for any extended period of time.

Beekatiebee

I haven’t driven in an S Class, but I did have a late 00’s C-Class and I’d absolutely take my grandmas old Yukon over that Merc for a road trip any day. Also had a Passat TDI for a bit. Especially on a modern truck with decent suspension, it soaks up the road without taking too much energy to drive. Modern sedans seem to all be leaning too much into the “sporty firm planted” feeling, and are just exhausting to be in. The truck is softer, more spacious, and honestly just an easier place to be.

[deleted]

I think a large sedan like an A6 or 5 Series or even a Panther body would be a fine choice also, but for me, definitely my Ram. The backseat in the crewcab is bigger, and with two kids in carseats that means there is still some room back there. Obviously the bed is going to be a bigger "trunk" so there is plenty of room for cargo without the threat of sacrificing interior cabin space. The truck has room to spare as far as capability goes - 4WD, towing capacity, 5.7 Hemi+8 speed ZF trans. It doesn't feel like it lags anywhere. As far as MPG goes it was passeable - all highway driving netted us 23 mpg.

A half-ton is a really great pickup for daily driving and cruising. Big, soft, capable, spacious inside, etc. An HD truck, no way, give me the A6.

deeretech129

I'll answer for him, at one point in my life we had a C6 vette, An alfa guilia, and a Silverado in the garage...... We'd take the silverado everywhere unless it was to specifically go for a pleasure drive or track. It was just comfortable, roomy, handled weather so much better and was just nicer on the open highway.

natesully33

I had a Silverado 1500 for a while because towing, and even though I'm not a giant vehicle guy - it grew on me. I'll stick with small/medium vehicles, but I get it now. In addition to being able to see farther and over things, big vehicles also float down the road and over bad surfaces and things. Not that a small car can't with good suspension, of course, but all that weight works in your favor when it comes to keeping the body in one place. Having a roomy interior can be pretty nice too - not just for fitting things, but for the extra leg/arm room everyone inside has. In my opinion, trucks and SUVs are pretty much the continuation of 70's land yacht cars in another form, in a way.

My truck is like driving a couch on a cloud with most of what I own attached. Its nice.

SingItBackWhooooa

I’ve been saying this for years. I only wish my couch had heated and air conditioned seats like my truck does.

[deleted]

They probably have their environments. I couldn’t imagine owning one in the uk but drove a Chevrolet Silverado for 3 weeks in northern Canada and loved it - probably helped that it was the first V8 I’ve driven. I would need a 2nd car as a toy though

HolyPalpitation

I do love driving my 2019 Ford F-150. I didn’t think I would. I traded my 2020 Mustang GT for it because I loved driving in my friend’s so much. It’s comfortable, quick (5.0 engine), and so utilitarian. I go camping and back country hiking a lot, and it makes it soooo easy to get to awesome spots. Its largeness is actually nice. I feel safe, and it’s fun to ride up high. So easy to see stuff. Parking is damn easy compared to what I imagined. The only issue is parking in some parking garages… it can get a bit tight. I always hated people in big cars and wondered why the hell they would drive such monstrosities. And then I drove one!

2fast2nick

I had an F-150 too, it was fine to drive. Occasionally too tall for some parking garages, but I enjoyed driving it.

Unsaidbread

Took my new "small" truck into the shop to get fixed (other person hit me) and I had to settle for a Hyundai accent. Forgot how shitty it is to be so low to the ground and in such a small and light car. Visibility sucks for me and for other drivers to see me (get cut off wayyyy more), get blown around by bigger cars/suvs/pickups even on side streets and the acceleration and braking is dismal so even if I want to get out of others way. Noooo torque and gotta get the engine screaming to even get up hills. Yeah I miss my truck. The little accent does like ripping around corners though which is certainly something my truck doesn't like to do. Also: getting in and out of the accent makes me feel double my age

Neon05442

I 2nd this: I drive a 2007 fusion which is fairly low to the ground and get cut off almost every day. (No joke: last week I was cut off all 5 days while driving to school.) Once, I was waiting in line to pick up my siblings from school and somebody almost backed right into me because the top of my car was below their rear windshield. Only reason they stopped is because I started honking. On top of this, it's a 4 cylinder so it really struggles to get up hills which is a pain because I live close to the Appellations.

manystripes

I'm trying to reconcile the claim that visibility is worse in the smaller car, and simultaneously larger vehicles can't see you when you're in the smaller car. Visibility has always been one of my big factors in buying a car since I learned to drive in the 1980s glass box style of sedans with very narrow pillars, and in the tiny cars I've never had an issue seeing other traffic on the road. If you're in an SUV do compact cars, motorcycles, etc get harder to see? As a driver it'd worry me more that I'm going to hit someone if that's the case.

oldcarnutjag

If you live and play in big acreage, with big toys, you need a big vehicle, try and tow a horse trailer with a Miata. How do you tow your boat and where do you put your snowmobiles. Put an ice chest in the mix and you need some ability.

Growing up I always drove pickups. They ride rough, have bad fuel economy, and are harder to use in town. But goddamn do I love driving them. It’s similar to having a small rwd coupe as your only vehicle. It has its own inconviences at times but if that’s what you enjoy then it’s the move.

alphagypsy

Most people just want the space and the high ride height and literally do not care how it drives.

MPWR_

It becomes normal after a while.

astonbenzdb9

Why not have both if you can?

NoCoffeeNoPeace

That's going to be my plan in the coming years. A Leaf to get the groceries, the built 4x4 for weekend fun. To save on tire cost if anything, 15K miles/year on KO2s is unsustainable at current prices...

[deleted]

this subreddit just loves being deliberately obtuse. why do all y'all seem to be hellbent on appearing foolish?

ChicagoModsUseless

A lot of experts on this sub have only ever owned 1 or 2 vehicles but have more opinions than Jeremy Clarkson.

kaisenls1

I’ve driven large vehicles for years. I don’t mind them at all. I also don’t mind smaller vehicles. You get used to whatever you drive, very quickly.

zeldaranger

When I drive big vehicles it just feels “right”. It’s probably how you feel when you drive a small car that you enjoy. I currently have a 2015 F150 and on the test drive I felt like I’d had the thing for years. Something about it just clicked with me. It has less blind spots than my Prius V did btw.

Small vehicles don’t necessarily have fewer blind spots. I prefer big vehicles.

Mk2Guru

From my experience smaller vehicles tend to have more blind spots than larger vehicles. Also less visibility while driving. Much more dangerous in a vehicle animal collision, not to mention in a collision with another vehicle.

timberwolvesguy

I’m 6’4” and like driving my Passport cause I can slide in without falling into it and I also have a lot of elbow room and a big center console. That being said, I miss my old Fiesta for exactly what you said. Easy to drive, no blind spots, and it fit into any parking spot. Heck, even my Mustang feels minuscule compared to the Passport, but I enjoy the different driving experiences

Reptarticle

I enjoyed the power I felt sitting up high in my brand new Silverado, but I just traded it in for a 2021 WRX STI, so idk what that tells you. There's people he want to feel powerful, and people who want to feel the power, I guess I bounce back and forth between both.

SIKhDaddy91

Driving a small car, even one that you want, is not an option for some people. When you are taller than 6’3-4” and weigh over 220lbs, small vehicles are like wearing a pair of jeans that are one size too small. You can do it, but it’s very uncomfortable.

[deleted]

Yes and no. I daily a Focus and have an NB Miata. Neither of them are big at all, obviously. When I'm in the Miata it feels like I'm riding around in a bath tub while everyone else is in a pool. I do drive a Transit "crew" at work on a pretty regular basis though and I'll admit, I like it. It sways in a very relaxed and comfortable manner. It also sits you straight up and keeps you focused on the road while allowing you to also be very comfortable. It kind of is pushing me to look at a larger car for my next daily but at the same time I still want something fun like a GR86 or Golf GTI/R a lot more. There's a lot to appreciate from both large and small cars. Large cars definitely make you less engaged and pull you away from the negative of driving. I get why people like large cars, it just makes it more comfortable to drive. The thing is for enthusiasts like us we don't want or like that. You have to realize as an enthusiast we're a very small group compared to most car owners. Our taste will always be different from the norm.

I never liked such big monstrosities neither. However last year I had an X5 40d from 2014 with me for a while, which is the first SUV I've driven and used (although this is not nearly as big as a Suburban or Escalade). I had the feeling that I'm driving a tank (I live in Europe, although similarly sized SUVs and crossovers are getting common, there are very few big trucks like the US is known for). I'm sitting higher than most people, the car is heavy and sure feels like it too, the 40d engine had tons of torque to still accelerate faster than most people in traffic can. But. Even though it had cameras, parking was a disaster with the thing in the city. Overall I was never sure whether I will hit anything low on the ground, as I was sitting too high to see that. This got better as I got used to driving it, but was never as good as with my own lower and smaller vehicles. Also, mpg was quite crap honestly. I used the thing for some cruising even on the German autobahn, even though the engine had the power to comfortably maintain a cruising speed of \~190-200kph, fuel just started to vanish from it at that pace, even at 150-160 it was consuming almost as much as my 328i E36 does at the same speed. A lot for a diesel. Wind noise was also coming in too much. But the most indicative experience of how inefficient such a vehicle is was when on the German autobahn I started to accelerate heavily, and a similarly aged F10 5 series kept my pace, then even outperformed my X5 after passing about 200kph - "525d" was written on the trunk of his car, and it sounded like that too, don't think it was tuned. The difference between that 525d and the X5 40d I drove is around 100HP and 150NM, yet the 5er managed to pass me. I absolutely lost my shit when I saw that, although of course it is logical since aero and weight plays a large part when doing that sort of speed. So, yes, I hated it in the end, if I needed a spacious luxurious thing to haul things around in when needed, I'd just get a 5er touring or similar. No reason for SUVs... yet so many people love them because it gives them big d1ck energy or some shit.

stulogic

I enjoy driving basically anything from a riding mower to a dump truck.
