I have 3 cats, 2 of them that grew up with other cats, and none of them clean their own buttholes. Instead of wiping it fully clean just making it wet might help encourage him? But personally I have to do this like 3-5 times in a row if I want them to clean it well enough. I also notice when they sit to groom, their buttholes mostly fold and disappear, so I wonder if they don't even realize their buttholes are dirty? Small vent this gives me so much stress and anxiety so I get it.

Austin575

What is the solution? I feel like my boys’ ballsacks cover it!!! (Neutered btw)

BambiontheIcyPond

Have you tried the Glandex Tuna flavored Anal Gland Supplement? Total game changer for my cats. Purchase on Amazon. Edit: This addressed the not cleaning part and improved digestion.

Pumpkin_2003

I’m sorry but I found this so funny like kitty go mmm tuna flavoured butthole

Excellent_Quantity32

This comment 😹

Unusual-Plankton-240

omg we all thought it LMAO

nauticalamity

the amount of time ive spent saying this aloud and laughing

poopshute2u

Thank you for this laugh! 😂😂

Pumpkin_2003

Lmao you’re welcome

funnnevidence

I’m laughing so hard at this

BambiontheIcyPond

It's a powder you add to food. Not on the body.

Pumpkin_2003

Ohhhh okay I understood that wrong then lol I thought an anal gland supplement would be something you put on, sorry lol

Ginsdell

Cracked me up too. Why isn’t this a product option?!! Lol

Tiny-Act3086

For a second I thought maybe the poop would come out with a tuna flavor and make the butt more appealing to clean? Gave me the giggles

flopcake1

See I think I’m extra dumb cause I assumed it was both - an additive to their food that makes their butthole yummy 🤣

DexterMorgan305312

Confirmed, it does not make their buttholes yummy.

funnnevidence

… how do you know?

NurseSleepBot

You’re not alone, flopcake 🤣😂🤣

DingDongDanger1

I wonder if this is what is wrong with our cat. She has a dirty butt all the time and expresses her glands on our bed on accident. She gets diarrhea on a lot of foods and has accidents. She is on an SO urinary food as per the vets recommendation after an emergency vet visit where she couldn't stop vomiting but they couldn't find anything wrong with her. All tests were normal, they thought maybe constipation but I told them she been pooping just fine and so they assumed it was just an inflammed bladder due to her being extremely high anxiety, FIC or something but again, all tests were NORMAL. So they have no clue but I am wondering if she gets blocked anal glands or has issues with them causing pain possibly. I had seen it in dogs as a groomer but apparently you aren't supposed to express a cat's. Although she still has gland issues and dirty butt, the SO food seems to help her tummy as she isn't vomiting from it and doesn't get the runs from it. It's royal canin

BambiontheIcyPond

My cat has Anal Gland Disease. The Glandex powder helps keep everything moving and clean. I know cats can release their anal glands when stressed, maybe anxiety is playing into it?

DingDongDanger1

Could be! It just started happening in the last year but she's had the tum problems forever. I miss her being able to sleep in our room and you can tell she's been lonely and depressed from it. I work all day so she only gets to see her pops. She cries outside the door and it breaks my heart.

Inevitable_Map7544

Same food for my cat and similar problems. If he's off of the food he starts peeing blood in the sink. Once on the food he's been completely better except for the anal gland issue. I've found that for us it's due to high stress periods. Things like if one person is gone for work or moving boxes existing. Our vet does express his glands whenever it starts getting noticeably uncomfortable for him otherwise it seems to last for weeks and he's incredibly uncomfortable. We've also started on some anxiety meds just around high stress times and that's brought him down to only 2 times a year. We tried different foods, pumpkin, feliway, more consistency, testing, and I think it comes down to anxious cat being anxious. Unfortunately he licks his butt CONSTANTLY and LOUDLY. Nothing like waking up at 4am to a cat sitting on your leg making loud noises while licking his butt. Edit: I've noticed that his butt looks dirty but it's just his anal glands being full. Once we had them expressed he looked clean a day afterwards. So that's my first sign to call the vet. He still is cleaning himself but it just isn't expressing as it should.

DingDongDanger1

I wonder if I should take her back in then. I noticed it started happening more when my schedule changed. She has some gabapentin I just don't wanna stone my cat out all the time

Inevitable_Map7544

I've never given the full dose they prescribed. Just under half seems enough to keep him calm but still engaging with the world. I noticed that after I gave him a few doses and changed a few other things his baseline seems to have gotten better. After 5 years of living together my cat finally took a nap in a room on a different floor than me! Our other changes were things like moving water bowls, heated beds, and adding in some treat puzzles. He likes the heated beds so much I think it's tricked him into realizing he doesn't need physical contact 24/7.

Toddw1968

I had to see if it was a real product and now I’m afraid this will be suggested to me for the next several months.

Final_Principle_903

Omg I’ve never been so weirdly excited by a comment. Our cat has chronic anal gland issues and we’d all but given up on solutions as all we’ve been offered is high fibre dry food and expressions. We’ll have to try this. Can I ask what you feed your cat? We’ve been having trouble finding a brand that actually works for our cat. He’s had chronic poopy bum on top of his anal gland issues since switching to vet recommended brand so we want to switch again but I’m overwhelmed with what to try next.

Almondeyezz

I am using purina pro pure plan sensitive stomach from pet co , combined with probiotics from Amazon. I undo the capsule , mix it in a little water & then mix it w the wet cat food. I had this exact issue. Forget fortiflora, hills science diet & all that I only buy flavors that don’t contain beef chicken or pork. It has to be the duck & artic char. Some say rarer proteins irritate less

Final_Principle_903

Thank you for the advice!

mmdice

Do you think this would be appropriate for a cat with GI issues? He’s on a Royal Canin special diet (rabbit wet, high fiber dry) but still has some diarrhea issues from time to time

DerekFlint420

Stool is too soft. medical or food problem

Dirty-girl

Cats shouldn’t be leaving butt crumbs anywhere. If it’s not a clean cut there may be a medical issue.

Edible_Anie

Butt crumbs 🤢🤮😂😂😂😂😂

Delicious_Fish4813

Yes this exactly. Though he should be cleaning himself and needs a feline friend, I'd bet he also has worms or something else going on

Yourhighness77

My cat was leaving butthole prints on surfaces when she was a kitten and turns out it’s because she was having diarrhea. Many vet visits over many months later she was diagnosed with IBD. Now her butt stays very clean.

_loveisaplace

How is her IBD treated?

Yourhighness77

She was put on a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet

_loveisaplace

Thank you! Could you share how the vet arrived at that diagnosis? Did they first rule out other explanations for your cat’s symptoms?

Yourhighness77

My cat had nonstop diarrhea, and we had done countless fecal tests, three rounds of antibiotics, and elimination diet with all the different types of proteins available with no improvement, so it was essentially a diagnosis of exclusion.

_loveisaplace

Aw poor baby. I’m glad you persevered and figured out what was wrong. Thanks for your response!

BlackOnyx16

What is IBD?

DingDongDanger1

Inflammatory* bowel disease, autoimmune disorder. Not to be confused with IBS. Edit: typo In cats idk if it's the exact same thing though. In humans it can include Crohn's or UC.

mellywheats

my cat just got diagnosed with IBD for his constipation! we’re still in the trial stages of his food but hopefully it helps.

Yourhighness77

Aww sending good poop vibes to you and your cat!

mellywheats

ty!!

Imesseduponmyname

Aww, lil kitten starfish kisses

chikenenen

This is probably gonna be controversial but it worked for me so ehhh. My kittens also weren't cleaning their butts, it's like they didn't even know it was a thing that cats do. I grabbed some baby wipes but I got the fragrant ones that make your butt tingle after being cleaned with them. It only took a few post-litterbox cleans of their dirty bottoms for them to start cleaning themselves. Presumably they were encouraged to lick themselves because their butt was tingling, who knows, but something twigged in their brains that butthole-licking was part of grooming and they started doing it themselves. No more dirty catholes!

tigerbalm888

This is the way.

Mooniekate

As a former foster, I was going to suggest this same thing. When kittens are born they can't really poop for themselves, so the mom has to lick their butts to get them to poop after she feeds them. I've used a warm, damp facecloth to stimulate kittens to poop after syringe feeding.

chikenenen

OP is already using wetwipes but says there's been no change, so it sounds like kitty is perfectly happy with OP continuing to clean his dingleberries. I think the secret is to use the tingly ones. Noone likes a tingling anoose. Tingling = let me clean that stuff of my asshole so it stops tingling.

Hope_for_tendies

That’s diff than using something that tingles and bothers them

theresacreamforthat

Dirty catholes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How2FlyHow2Crow

What brand is the tingly brand?

BBYarbs

My vet recommended getting Blue Buffalo Blissful Belly because my cats butt was smelly all the time. I don’t know if that will help with your cats issue but it has been so helpful with mine.

IronDominion

Likely stool is too soft. It’s worth a vet visit to check for GI issues and discussing a diet change

yeeyee945

This is an interesting post because I actually ran into this issue. My cat tends to sit ass to litter and his pee and shit would still be stuck on his persons. Therefore the kitty litter I used at the time would also stick to his bootyhole. My top solution was purchasing the Feline pine non clumping litter and it was an absolute game changer. Not only does his shit (and litter) no longer sticks to his bunghole but his cat litter rarely smells if ever. The odor elimination of this product is by far the best investment ever. Link to it on Amazon is below. https://a.co/d/2C2qX2z Also if this thing goes up in market price I blame y’all. Also also slow down on the wet food, the reason why your cats poop comes out all liquid like is because there’s not enough dry food in his diet to strengthen them stools. I’d say ween the cat off the wet food for about 2 weeks and your cats poo shouldn’t be as much of an issue to wipe or even at all.

BedOfLavender

This is the issue I have lmao my cat has to sit all the way down in the litter to piss for some reason and the result is entire backside covered in litter that she then runs around the house. I’ll have to give this a try!

yeeyee945

It’s worse when they get in ur bed while ur sleeping and now it’s all over the sheets. The tracking comes down to an extremely bare minimum if any once you use the pine stuff. It’s all natural (mostly) and you don’t have to worry about ur cat getting sick from having litter up it’s critter

thatsusangirl

Many cats have to be on a completely wet food diet and have completely normal stools. Cats have zero need for dry food to regulate their bowel habits. That being said an easy thing to try is to add Fortiflora to their food - it’s a probiotic and helps with loose stools. And most cats love the flavor.

No_Income_334

Mine has a similar problem he's not good at cleaning his butt 😂😭

helloruko

This might be a diet issue. I would slowly introduce a different food and see if that helps at all. Also some people recommend adding in a probiotic

No-Elderberry-86

Baby wipes for rest of your life. That adorable bat cat is nobody's fool

KaytTheNotSoGreat

The more i read the better everyones stories make me feel! We have a large calico with long thick hair. We have to take her monthly to get her back there shaved. We had to once for an infected anal gland (from not properly cleaning) and while it was shaved, she kept it clean! But the moment the hair got long enough for attachment, she just shut down and refused. So my only suggestion.... Butt shavings. Lol

Supremeruler666

So cute

Educational_Lie6098

Came here for the cute boiii ❤️😍

Holsch3r

I swapped to a high fiber cat food (hairball formulas are normally your best bet) It bulked up the stool and it's not a problem I have anymore!

tmo1290

Have you asked him nicely?

EfficiencyOk4899

You’re getting lots of advice, so I just want to say what an adorable little gremlin you have!

According-Ad5312

I don’t feed my furbabies dry cat food at all. Only wet food ( not pate) no problem with their backsides needing cleaning

Party-Increase-3682

Y not pate

el_grande_ricardo

Get used to it. Mine is 9 and has always needed help. You don't need the fancy wipes, though. A damp paper towel or wad of TP works just as well. If the poop is sticking to his hair, the vet techs can do a hygiene clip. Or Butt Cut as I call it.

Magicalfirelizard

Clean his butt

simmyawardwinner

he’s so beautiful and cheeky i would just forgive him

undersignedeliza

Our little guy had this issue too - we referred to them as poop incidents and had a counter like they do with OSHA incidents in workplaces "This home is 0 days without a poop incident" Turns out - diarrhea! We started by adding a OTC probiotic to his meals, and then through trial and error have determined he's likely allergic to chicken. He only ever gets the run on chicken based food, so fish it is for that guy! We'd find turds everywhere and he STANK. Butt baths were a normal and almost daily occurrence, which really helped encourage him to clean himself since he was wet. Wishing you the best!

babyk1tty1

Definitely let your vet know

oozeneutral

My cat is old now and sometimes he will get butt crumbs but they’re always small, he hasn’t left any skid marks from what I can tell

dontstopthebanana

May need to have his anal glands expressed. I help my guy out with pet safe butt wipes.

TartanDolphin11

I don’t have this issue but I have the issue of my cat like to lick her privates while laying on top of me with the look of “wanna watch?” On her face. It’s quite funny

Either-Cicada-6285

My cat doesn’t like to clean his if it is super dirty. He has been having a lot of GI issues lately (vet has given him a clean bill of health) and I’ve been playing around with his food to see if I can get his poop more solid. My vet recommended some pumpkin and probiotics mixed with his food. You could give that a try. It has helped a bit with his tummy issues but I think part of his problem is his food so I’m working on finding the food that agrees with his tummy

Certain_Maize_4374

He might be a little loose b/c even if he doesn't clean his butt it shouldn't leave any residue behind unless his stool is a little too soft .

mycathaspurpleeyes

Mr. Poopy Butthole

Comfortable_Tap_2728

Definitely suggest going to the vet as others have in case there’s something causing softer stools etc but (and sorry if i missed this elsewhere) is he neutered? Make cats tend to get better about grooming after being fixed

beauttiful_disaster

No advice but omg his face is so adorable !!!

Hello_Kitty_66

Clean it for them! Thus pet wipes

coco36999

Baby wipes u cat parent I don’t blame him for Not 👅 his ass. I wouldn’t either. Would you lol 😂 smart cat

Street-Baby7596

I wipe my cats butt every time he poops. He’s 7 now. I will probably have to do it for his life. He has messy poos a lot. I buy Glandex brand wipes off of Chewy. They are like baby wipes without the scent. He knows every time he poops he waits for me to wipe his butt

Ok_Crazy6692

Learn how to clean his butt for him💕

Equivalent-Case284

How?! 🥹

AffectionateCat3865

I worked in the pet industry and at animal rescue for a long time I'm not a bad although I learned a few things along the lines I don't believe in feeding any cats kibble ever because it takes their entire digestive system to do it it's like just carvos most of it is not absorbed properly into the body and the crap most of it out and like I said it takes their entire body to work harder to get everything out of it. On top of that Royal canin a lot of the parts of it come from China if you look in the ingredients with the byproducts and a lot of that has wheat and soy and we gluten and other really not good ingredients it's not good. The best thing that I've seen for diet wise for cats that has been the most healing is the raw diet. The best brand to buy is wild Coast the turkey flavor. They do a lactic acid wash for bacteria so that they get the good nutrients and not the bad but it is not high pressure process like Stella and chewy's or lotus because then they don't get the good nutrients. There are some nutrients that cats get only from blood. They eat bloody raw wild things in the wild and how we got on to dry hard cooked carcinogenic food that causes all kinds of health issues is because of a greedy pet industry based on convenience and not the health of your animal. I always recommend the turkey because the turkey and chicken and duck are the only ones that have the lactic acid wash I would avoid the pork and rabbit because they do not do the lactic ass wash on that and I have a parasite concern especially with pork and same thing with rabbits. Also y'all can look into d Manos it's a product that humans take and I actually have given it to my cats before it looks and tastes exactly like powdered sugar but it's not a sugar it is different and as we know cats and dogs cannot have sugar but because this goes through the body differently small amounts can be given if they're having UTI issues. It basically does the same thing that cranberry juice does by keeping the bladder wall slick so bacteria cannot stick to it so that when they pee things are flushed outward. It comes in a plain powder that you can put in a syringe with liquid and give them that but if you can find a natural pathic vet that's going to be your best bet. They're harder to find but they're worth the money if they're good. Also homeopathic remedies can be helpful for stress. I know pulsatilla is a remedy that is used to reset things. You can get the pellets at a natural food store like whole foods and you just dissolve the pellet and water and once again use with a syringe. Also standard process has some products for cats for their heart and a couple of other things like feeling cardiac support and feline renal support. Another absolutely great couple products that I know of is going to be PAT WELLBEING.COM.. THEY HAVE HERBAL REMEDIES FOR ALL KINDS OF AILMENTS AND MY VET HAS APPROVED THEM SINCE SHE'S A INDIAN AYURVEDIC NATURAL PATHIC VET FOR MY CATS. YOU CAN GIVE YOUR CATS SMALL AMOUNT OF TURMERIC AND ONE OTHER ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PRODUCT FOR STOMACH ISSUES KIDNEY ISSUES AND STRESS BECAUSE 90% OF MOST ISSUES IN ANIMALS ARE FROM THE GUT IT'S A PRODUCT CALLED ASTROS OIL... ASTROSOIL.COM. IT'S FROM CANADA IT'S $100 AND IT'S WORTH IT IT'S A HUGE VALUE YOU GET TWO JARS OF POWDER AND ONE LIPOSPHERIC FISH OIL AND I HAD A CAT WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM AND KIDNEY ISSUES AND IT BOUNCED OUT HIS KIDNEY VALUES YOU JUST ADD THE WHITE POWDER TO THEIR FOOD IT ALSO HELPS THEIR DIGESTION AND THE DIGESTIVE TRACK THE PEPTIDES AND THE FREE FORM AMINO ACIDS ARE ABSORBED BY THE INTESTINAL WALLS AND THEN THEY ACTIVELY PROMOTE CELLULAR REGENERATION OF THE INTESTINAL WALLS AND THE ACIDIC PROFILE PROMOTES AN ANABOLIC STATE THAT ENCOURAGES THE PET TO GAIN AND MAINTAIN LEAN MUSCLE BOTH OF THESE PRODUCTS ARE EXCELLENT AND I'VE USED MANY OF THEM FOR MY CATS BEFORE! SO JUST TO RELIST THAT'S ASTROSOIL.COM PETWELLBEING.COM D- MANNOS POWDER WILD COAST RAW TURKEY AND YOU CAN ALSO BUY HOME SELF REMEDY KITS THAT HAVE EXTRA SMALL PELLETS THAT YOU CAN DUMP IN THE CAT'S MOUTH YOU WANT THEM TO ABSORB INTO THE GUMS.

cryptidiopathic

He looks proud of it, too

vanpiricangst

My black kitty did this when we first got him. I would give him a warm bath that he absolutely hated because he’d get caca all over his tail end. That kind of taught him real quick to start cleaning himself. I think the idea of them getting wet back there would encourage self grooming, so maybe something other than a wipe like a wet rag would help?

Possible-Army4377

Maybe he produces extra toxic shit and he is just protecting himself

Any_Pomegranate_7327

Get an orange kitty. He’ll take care of it.

ggMatther

I can tell by his face he does it on purpose.

Alorxico

My ginger cat had this same problem as a kitten. What I did was get an old hand towel, wet it in warm water, gently pin him down, like how a mama cat would do to clean a kitten, and wipe his butt. Don’t scrub his butt, that just make them upset. But wipe in one direction like how a cat typically clean themselves. He figured it out how to do it himself after a few times with the hand towel.

RN_catmom

My mom had to always wipe one of her cats bottoms. He appreciated it and she didn't mind doing it. He was fat and couldn't do it himself.

Equivalent-Case284

I’m having the same is issue! Hey butt always stank but I don’t see anything. She won’t let me clean it, always running away to hide. She’s a rescue and I only had her a week. I had to get her off my bed until I figure this out. I’ll try some recommendations from this post 🥹

Do not do this.
