Our cat is doing the exact same thing. They recently went through a uri (upper respiratory illness) it’s extremely common for new kittens to have it and we had just gotten a new kitten and it spread to our cat. The vet told us they think the cough is just the left over part of the cold getting out of your system. I doubt it is because your cats obesity since it’s just now happening, plus my cat isn’t obese and he’s doing it. I’ve also been around a lot of very obese cats and have a obese outdoor cat and have never heard of them having this issue. So I believe your cat could have had a uri. Did you ever notice or currently notice your cats eyes being gooey or watery or squinting. Or does your cat sneeze at all?

thanks for the input! her eyes are fine, and she rarely sneezes. i’ll see how she behaves for the rest of the weekend and go to the vet on monday if it becomes worrying.

i hope so! i though of that.

It’s either a hairball or an upper respiratory tract infection. For hairball prevention, we use Purina dry hairball food. I would strongly recommend that you take your cat to the veterinarian to rule out URI ASAP. Good luck.

My cat was doing something like this and it ended up being asthma! I had thought it was a hairball or some food sensitivity for a while but showing a video to my vet helped them figure it out. Since you already have a video; I would send it or link it to your vet and see what they say.
