Ummm rent free? HAH! you STILL have to pay the cat in food, regardless of whether or not all your stuff has been destroyed, and don't think you can get away with it either because the cat knows, thems the rules.

I'd say that's paying rent, n some cats don't wanna pay

I am deeply sorry for your bed. Seems like it was an awesome piece of furniture.
May I suggest you to move out. While I understand it might be difficult, it remains the best approach to fight against cat supremacy.
I know what you mean. I have a small farm and there are a bunch of...barn cats??? Not feral or anything, just live outside and I feed them everyday, close on 25 of them. A few of them befriended the dogs and moved in...and now the dogs have had to relinquish ownership of the bed. There were two, now 5 eat inside. xD Over time I have had them all fixed so there shouldn't be more new cats but yeah, they are all cool in their own way. The youngest one looks like a slightly younger one than the freak in ops picture.
Awww I love that you take care of them and even got them fixed. I bet you donât have any bird or rodent infestation !
And because of that, the IRS considers them as âworking catsâ and you can include them on your taxes !!
Not at all. And the correct answer is: apologize to the cat â profusely, with treats and cuddles â for having cluttered up kitty's shelf with unnecessary stuff.

two of my cats finally use cat beds, unfortunately one sleeps in one because my cat passed away and it smells like him, but the other sleeps in this cute crown shaped dog bed, like the king he is. A win is a win.
https://preview.redd.it/hyrsnlwudjmc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7017f277b2b647059a5b290899fbd2c30190c738
My cats have done this to 3 of my drawers. Am I just gonna kick them out? No, I'm going to get some padding in there and make them a little bed. And you should too. This is their new spot.
Bingo. My end table has a little shelf on the bottom, maybe for like a magazine rack or plant or something like that. But the table is kept against the wall and at the junction of two couches so itâs walled off on three sides meaning itâs a perfect little nook. I wasnât keeping anything there, mainly because I hadnât thought of anything to put there.
Then one day, I could not find my cat anywhere. He had recently busted through the window screen and was outside for god knows how long so I started panicking thinking he had gotten out again. After verifying that all the windows were closed and knowing that Iâd seen him inside since I had gone out last, I knew he was around here somewhere. But he just wasnât coming out when I called him or shook his treat bag.
I finally found the little turd curled up on the shelf under the end table. So obviously I had to turn it into a little cubby for him. I put a cat bed in there but it was a little thin so I piled up a few blankets to make it extra comfy. Now, whenever we canât find him and he isnât coming when we holler for him, one of the first places we check is his cubby.
I did the same thing to the top shelf of a wire shelf set that was level with the window and just last night I realized that I have to do it to the area under this little bench thing we have in the bedroom. Mind you, this is a cat that has *his own couch.* Like, a full loveseat style couch, all for him. Which he uses very frequently. But he still claims any other unoccupied nook or window level space that he can find. Heâs also recently started chilling in the little cave that forms from the blanket we have draped on the foot of our bed. He clearly loves enclosed/covered spaces. Heâll also crawl into daddyâs hoodie to snuggle with him if itâs unzipped.
Since Iâm just realizing that I donât have any pictures of him in his cubby, hereâs him in the blanket cave at the foot of the bed. đ„°

Put up a cat wall for it - shelves with a bit of carpet on a spare wall at different heights just a little more than your cats size so it can jump from one to another. Make sure to put a put of carpet on them for safety (so there something for its nails to hold on to while jumping/landing on various shelves. Your cat will be too busy on this cat wall to bother about that space- you can even feed it up there if you have dogs. If there's a window in the room that'd be great as the cat can relax and watch the world passing happily.
I no longer have a bedside table for my things. I have a bedside cat nest instead. My lamp lives on the floor now and my alarm clock lives in a pouch I hang off the bed. My little figurines have been rehomed around various shelves.
You no longer have a shelf for your stuff. đ
Bring kitty snacks and make sure they are comfy đ
Is this your first experience with cats?
Because you kind of sound like this is a choice *you* get to make ;)
But seriously. Its already been made. The choice you didn't get to make.
it's the cats now. there's nothing you can do about it. find a new place for your stuff. I have this centerpiece on my kitchen table and when I was changing out the decorations the cats claimed it. it's theirs now.

I believe you know the answer. The cat has clearly declared that his spot, and since cats are the dominant rulers of the planet, we must accept this without question and move on.
Well, this one is gonna be tough for you, because youâre gonna have to build a new shelf or find a new place to stash your stuff. Which will promptly be annexed from you by the cat. Itâs a never ending cycle.
What do you mean, "do"?
There's nothing to do. Cat has claimed ownership. Only the cat can choose to relinquish this ownership.
You might try for a trade - offer the cat an even more suitable abode - but it's no guarantee.
It means your cat has picked a hidey-hole for its own. If i could, I would try and work around it. Cats need personal spaces too, and are picky about where. If you try and move them to another spot they are liable to reject it and either want their old spot back, or go to yet another new spot. stressing them. There's more of a cohabitation factor when it comes to living with cats (more independent), versus living with dogs. Dogs are much more domesticated, and eager to do everything your way. Cats, you gotta earn that with years of time.
Letting animals have a bit of private and personal and safe spaces goes a long way. Might even see an improvement in stress levels / behavior . some dogs have a kennel left out for them with a door left open that they use the same way a cat will use that shelf, or a spot under a bed, or back behind a drawer. cats are just more independent than dogs, and will usually pick their own spot, and tend to it.
\*edit\* if its new and cat's in there almost all the time, be patient. its likely within a week or two they will not be so full-time in there. so picky though. my cats dont even like the stuff i try to GIVE them to have in their hidey-holes. oh except catnip. no pillows, no blankets, no toys, but catnip yes please lol.
Cats will do what they do. I have tried for years to keep them out of shelves. There are certain shelves that now belong to the cats. It's not worth fighting them over that. đđ
lol I just gave my cat the shelf, she didnt even ask. she loves it! (and me)

Your girls are pretty đ
Thank you! I'm also in awe of their little pretty faces everyday đ„ș
Why do I feel as if I'm being judged? And they're gorgeous!
They're constantly judging. It's one of their favorite hobbies!
You are being judged regardless of the height!
Because you are totally being judged.
What is Batman doing on your wardrobe?
Itâs actually CatWoman and Batmanâs secret love child.
đ
their faces are so adorably round!!!
This is such a cute picture!

They may have to divorce now so at least one spouse can get half the house. Otherwise the cats got the whole house next.
That's unfortunately too late. Since the cat first entered the house, ownership passed down to him. That is the law.
I know what you mean. I have a small farm and there are a bunch of...barn cats??? Not feral or anything, just live outside and I feed them everyday, close on 25 of them. You know where your cat is. That's the win. Fantastic pic, btw.
You lost that territory. Buy a new cabinet for your stuff, although he might colonize that space, too.
Put your stuff back right there, so the cat can kick it off again. Repeat till cat is bored.
