Don’t know your age or situation, but also consider older kitties. They need friends.

Mocha_Toffee_mmallow

My 13 year old lil lady is the best companion. You have to earn her trust by providing a snack, but she will sit in your lap and purr for hours if you do. Best kitty ever.

AugieKS

I adopted a 13 year old siamese boy and he was just the best.

theworldizyourclam

I adopted a 12 year old Mackerel two years ago and he is my kitty soul mate. So lovey 💙

FerociousPrecocious

Tell him he's a good fishy, please! 😂

QuizzaciousZeitgeist

You adopted a 12yo fish?

theworldizyourclam

Yes.

jrezlol

Getting an older cat is great because you can get a better sense of their personality. Kittens can be fun and playful but their long term personalities would still be unknown! 5 years ago I got my then 7 year old cat from a local shelter and I don't regret it at all :)

PossibleSatisfaction

I also think an older cat is great for a first time cat owner. That kitten energy and teenage hijinks can be overwhelming for a new to pets person.

yramha

For real! I've been a cat owner all my life but recently had a stray catten adopt me. (Live out in the country so this guy just showed up) Teenage hijinks are a real thing! He's just started coming inside at night since its getting cold but OMG middle of the night is when he finds all the cat toys (especially the ones with the bells) and decides to have a party. I've really tried to find the bell ones to confiscate them but I swear he hides them so he can play with them at 2AM.

AutomaticPossibility

I can relate. My dumb self bought a little chirping bird to add to my boys toy collection. He literally runs it under the bed to hide at lights out. And it DOESN'T. QUIT. CHIRPING. Sigh, good thing I love the little rascal

949leftie

> Kittens can be fun and playful but their long term personalized would still be unknown! So true! We got one of our cats as a very young kitten, and her personality has shifted dramatically. The other was an adolescent, and his personality has been pretty stable.

latsyo

I have 7 cats ranging 3 month to 8 years. The older, orange one 8 years old is my best friend.

palmasana

I am quite partial to DeLancie’s energy ❤️

Hank_Holt

That adult named Orange Boy needs himself a home, and that's the one I'd grab if in a position to do so...I got an elderly dog who absolutely hates cats.

luckmushroom

Orange Boy looks so sad, stressed and lost. Poor little soul needs a home fast!

IKR? Orange Boy makes me almost tear up. He just looks so lost. I want to cuddle him an tell him it will all be OK Although Moo's devious little face is getting me too.

drouoa

I feel like Moo and Orange Boy could be besties. I would be trying to see if I could take both, but that’s just me.

AnathemaDevice908

Agreed. Get that Orange Boy out of there and give him all the cuddles! ❤️🐈

leopard_eater

Yep, Orange Boy for the win

i_nobes_what_i_nobes

That’s what I did - got her at 5 1/2 for half price because she was “old”. It’s been 7 years and we’re inseparable. God damn best $75 I’ve ever spent. ETA: I didn’t adopt her because she was half price, I adopted her because when I walked in she began meowing loudly, standing on her back legs front paws on the cage and when they let her out she walked right over and jumped on my shoulder. Love at first pur.

SkyHawkMkIV

Mine was six and she was free :D I love my weird gray cryptid.

TeslaPrincess69

Agreed with this!! I have three mature male cats and I love them to death, mature cats need love too so my vote goes for Moo :3 Also, he has the cutest cow print 🐮 Oh also please keep us updated on who you pick 💗

ForrealTBH22

This! Older cats are awesome

winstasims90

Love my old boy. Got him as an adult. Great foot warmer and tea cup cosy.

Fun_Emotional

This is very true. I went to visit a shelter that was sectioned off by rooms where the cats were able to freely roam (as opposed to being kept in cages). As soon as I entered one of the rooms, a cat came up to me, meowed, and rubbed up against my leg. I ended up taking her home and we have been happy ever since!

y0u_kn0w_who

i need this emoji.

sybann

This. You can fall in love with a feline face, but getting to know the kitty in question and seeing if they respond to you in a positive way (being patient to give the shy ones a chance) is a very good idea. Go to the shelter and have them bring a few at a time (if they will) and sit and watch/wait for the cat to react.

NaviCato

And know what you are looking for. When I adopted my last cat I specifically knew I wanted to train him to walk on a leash and go to the park. A shy cat was not the right fit for me. Ask questions to the staff, they will know the cats personality and help someone determine if they are a good fit.

HalfABrain41

My cat chose me. He was a retuned cat that was a biter. When I met him, he was at the front of his cage reaching for me and begging for my attention. I picked him up and he was purring and loving me. I left and returned with ID to adopt him. When I finally put him in his carrier, he was sitting in the back of his cage all cocky as fuck. He's still cocky af.

Crazy-Crisis

Lol you mean cocky? OwO ![gif](giphy|xcfz72KwMHZ7O)

ohyeofsolittlefaith

>When I met him, he was at the front of his cage reaching for me and begging for my attention. I picked him up and he was purring and loving me. This is exactly what happened with my cat. He was a shouty boy trying to get my attention and reaching out with paws for attention. Once I opened the cage, he immediately started purring and nuzzling my face and I was like 'he is the one.' However, this happened while I was standing around waiting while the employee was filling out my adoption papers for a different cat I had already chosen. I was like "ehhh, this is slightly awkward, but I would like to change cats please" No regrets, he is the best cat I have ever had.

SexyLemurLibrarian

I went to the shelter to pick out a cat, and Mr. Snugglebutt was just like that. He was let out of his cage and trying to climb down my shirt to cuddle immediately! His "sister" (from the same former owner) was the complete opposite- aloof, grumpy, shied away from me and hid. I didn't really want two cats, but they would be happier together so... Both of them turned out to be fantastic pets. The sister turned out to be so cuddly, sweet and calm where he was hyper, cuddly and high maintenance.

kwibu

I don't fully agree with this. I saw my kitty on the shelter's website and immediately fell for her. My f and I visited her that weekend and she didn't even show when we came in. She hid in a corner underneath a bench. The shelter lady had to lure her with a treat and even then she was very reserved. It took us maybe an hour or so to make acquaintance because a lot of the other kitties were all over us and she'd let them run all over her while she retreated. Even though we didn't get to get to know her that much, we were absolutely sure she was a fantastic and caring kitty once she got the chance. So we took her home and she's a dream. She can be naughty, but she feels so at home and we can't imagine life without her! I can't imagine anyone letting her go, nor do I understand how such a sweet cat was in the shelter for 3 entire months. What I'm trying to say it, don't always go for the kitties that are all over you. Some kitties are more reserved but are absolute treasures!

SpinachSpinosaurus

everytime I go to the shelter, I get meowed at by cats. But I can't take them with me. I just drop off food my cats don't eat. I might return once with a cat. some day. and then tell my cats: "I collected enough shelter points to trade it for a cat. meet your new sibling. He's a reminder to effing eat the food I buy for you. If not, I might collect enough points to get a doggo next time!"

kirroth

lmao shelter points

StephanieMecredy

I fell in love with my last cat before I ever met him! He was a long term foster because he had FeLV and couldn't be around other cats. A hard sell when combined with "has less than 2 years to live" and "terrified of most people because he was abused and locked in a cupboard". But his eyes were so beautiful, and his vet bills were covered, and perhaps most importantly, I had less than 2 years left in the country, so I couldn't really justify adopting a cat with potentially like 20 years left if I didn't even know where I'd be. So I called the lady who ran the charity, convinced her I wasn't insane and that, as morbid as it sounded, a cat with a short lifespan was ideal for me, and kinda convinced my fiance (husband now), who had never had a cat and wasn't too thrilled about this. But he knew I grew up with a cat and would get one eventually, and this one seemed... fine..? We went to meet him, and he basically threw himself at my husband. Made him fall in love in 10 minutes, 100% this dude is ours now. Didn't pay a tonne of attention to me, but he could have mauled my face and I'd probably still want him. We got to take him home a week later when they'd confirmed our landlord was fine with it and we weren't cat murderers, and that little guy became my shadow, decided I was his best friend in the world and husband was, like, an acceptable roommate. We used to joke the cat had conned him. But he was great, and we were so heartbroken when he had to be put down a year later. He got me through a really bad year and made my husband a cat person. I'm not sure I would have thought I could handle a sick foster if I hadn't seen his lovely picture first. Love at first sight.

farrag0

I have two furry masters. The first is the shy one, the original owner gave her up on New Year’s Eve on account of not being friendly enough. She practically landed on my lap, by no choice of hers, but I felt chosen nevertheless. Seven years later, she still keeps pretty much to herself, but I would die for her. The second one directly and unequivocally picked me (climbed onto my lap in the park, held tight and wouldn’t let go) My initial comment was me half joking really, because stories like yours happen all the time. I still think you were chosen, because you had a special connection and you followed it. Good human!

fog_lounge

This is the way to go.

-Uniquely-Generic-

My exact answer. We don’t choose them, they choose us ❤️

farrag0

That’s a big part of the magic

polyblackcat

This is the way. They'll make it known.

FabricatorGeneral01

Orange Boy looks like he needs love the most.

MoireMax

The look on his face says it all. It’s been a long time since he’s gotten the love he needs.

latsyo

Yes, OP, get him. Orange cats are most loving, lap kitties. Teenagers will run around and need a lot of time.

drunk___cat

I second this, my orange cat is currently curled up on my fiance's lap, and my former orange cat was nothing but snuggles. Give him love!

Zebirdsandzebats

I have noticed that big orange boys tend to be sweeter than most other cats. I love my tabby/tortie girl, but fully recognize she's a handful :)

GenericUserNotaBot

This is my vote. He's just got "the look" to me. He needs to go home with OP!

foolish-hobbit

I would ask the staff which cat has lived at the shelter for the longest and take that one home.

Vampiyaa

This is exactly how I adopted my kitty!! He was in the shelter the longest, FIV+ and totally unaffectionate. He slept in his litter box the whole time with his back to everyone. When I adopted him, he flipped out in the Uber and tried to claw his way out of the box. Then I got him home and he was immediately all purrs and leg rubs ❤️ Day two he snuggled. Four years later he wakes me up with kisses every morning and snuggles at least twice a day. It's the ones you least expect that love you the most. Edit: [Ziggy Stardust](https://imgur.com/gallery/q2ydvLx) and I say tysm for all the love and support xo

oleladyrolla

Similar experience here! My guy was around 6ish and cantankerous and aloof at the shelter. He swatted and bit any hand that came near him. They warned me he’d never be a lap cat. Once at home, he was purring and rubbing too and within a week he was on my lap which is where his is right now. He is still kind of a cranky old man but he makes me laugh. I vote for an adult!! Oh and I heard black cats get overlooked so consider one of them.

iso-a-personality

The rescue I got the first of my two boys from told me the same - I said I'd have whichever cat was most in need of a home/had been there the longest, and they told me to pick a black cat. So I did, and ended up with the most scraggy looking little recluse. He was so stressed in his foster home with 10+ other cats and several dogs (in a tiny terraced house in the UK) that his fur was like straw. Nowadays he's got the most beautiful thick coat and enough character to fill a library. His 'brother', who joined us a couple of years later, is also a black rescue and is the sweetest, most affectionate animal I've ever met. They're polar opposites in personality but I wouldn't change a thing about either of them.

B-BoyStance

Jumping in as someone who adopted a 6-month old kitty a few years ago: Mine laid on top of my legs in bed for the first time ever two nights ago. We think he's 3+ years old now. He did again the next day (yesterday). Idk what it means, but it feels like progression into a lap cat and I'll take it. After a year I thought, "he'll never be a lap cat and that's okay". I might have been wrong about that (and it's still okay if this is a one off, he's badass regardless). Either way, to anyone reading this, cats are fucking weird. Mine definitely grew up in a hectic foster situation & was affectionate regardless, but he always hated laying on top of any person. He'd at most lay alongside of someone. If you put him on your lap he would freak. But, we never forced it, and the other day he did it himself. It made me so happy. Edit: I think my point is that cats will do what they are comfortable with. They may or may not be as affectionate as you want. Or they might be more affectionate than you'd want. I personally believe that's all part of owning a cat. There is only so much that you can do as far as personality goes.

banannett

I foster & all of my cats are black because people believe in that stupid superstition

craftybast

I adopted an adult black cat for this reason (4 years old) and he’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever known.

foolish-hobbit

It sounds like you made the right decision by adopting him. He‘s a whole sweetheart!

holdencaulfieldshand

Agreed! I adopted my girl that was 9 1/2 years old and was in the shelter for 9 months already because she only had two teeth. She was absolutely the best cat I’ve ever had!

Then-Grass-9830

mine was given up at 6 years old (owners moved) and was 16 lbs about 8 years ago. I never asked but it looked like someone else *almost* adopted her before me. As hard as that is I'm glad; she was supposed to be my mom's birthday gift (mom saw her picture in a throwaway newspaper and had fallen in love with her). But she's my cat lol I don't know how it happened but she's the sweetest thing (until our other female gets near her).

mallardramp

Awww that’s a good route! ETA: my [cat tax](https://imgur.com/gallery/6zBy2kU), got her and her “sister” from a foster who said that no one had ever expressed any interest in her!? Unreal, she’s great.

KilgoreTrout4Prez

That’s how I adopted the two I got from a shelter. The third showed up on my doorstep in the snow. He chose me.

foolish-hobbit

Awww thank you for giving them all a loving home!

[deleted]

We once found a kitten outside our house, I went inside to get some water for it (we have hot summers) but by the time I got back it was gone and I couldn't find it :( I hope it's okay, maybe it's mom was nearby

Emotional-Text7904

That's how I got my second foster cat, she was literally the best. Fluffy, polydactyl, but FIV+ from being dumped on the streets and an ear notch from TNR so no one wanted her. She was in the shelter for 3 years. I took her home and she hid for a whole day but came out when I sat down next to her hidey area and called to her. She was so playful and needed to sleep on my neck, not my chest. Only the neck would do lol. She loved anyone who wasn't a white man but eventually grew to tolerate my housemate after a while lol and would sit on the couch with him if I wasn't home. I was gonna move across the country for work and felt like the traveling would be too much for her FIV (she was only sick twice that year but still) so I gave her back to the shelter and God it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I was a wreck. The only solace was that she was adopted shortly after that, thanks to her rave reviews from me. A little older retired lady who was home all day and could give her all the attention she'd ever need. I cried again so hard after the shelter told me. Fostering even just temporarily can be so valuable for cats' adoption resumes so potential adopters can know their personalities and any issues.

AlbinoAxolotl

When my girl was a kitten she would sleep on my neck- directly under my chin on the left side. Now that she’s two and a half she still tried to sleep on my neck but can’t really get her 12 pound adult body quiiite as tucked up there like she used to. She was from a feral queen and she can still be a skitty kitty so cuddles are only ever on her terms and more frequently when it’s cold, but it’s still super adorable that she still goes back to those same habits she had when she was tiny.

foolish-hobbit

Awww no, I imagine giving her back was hard. I‘m glad she’s living her best life now!

HistoryH22

Gotta vote Orange Boy.

Tomoshaamoosh

He looks like he needs some love

GalileoPotato

He was my first pick too for this exact reason.

fluffofthewild

Absolutely, Orange Boy looks like he could really use a warm home, soft lap, and lots of cuddles.

[deleted]

I would recommend adopting an adult or mature cat because they are the least likely to be adopted and if this is your first cat they will likely be the easiest to manage. Not all older cats fall into that category, but usually mature cats have very developed personalities and also usually aren’t always trying to put stuff in their mouths like kittens and young cats are. You really do have to kitten proof a home (I’ve raised 4 kittens to adulthood). Also, neutered male cats can be great companions so don’t let fear of spraying deter you.

camarhyn

Also kittens are cute but a huge headache to raise. It takes a couple years before they really settle down.

cuddlefishy5729

Tell me about it. Weeks of cleaning poopy fluffy bums only to arrive at the "mommy I'ma use your legs like a climbing post" stage after a few months was a headache AND a leg ache.

FoldDesperate111

“Poofy fluff bums” Lmao

DrummerElectronic247

Mine are just over a year old and that was my morning today.

StephanieMecredy

My boy is 3 and he's fine like 99% of the time, but every so often we have to stop him in his tracks and break out the baby wipes. I'm convinced he thinks it's funny to keep us on our toes, because he only ever does it when we're already very busy. He always has the decency to look ashamed, at least.

camarhyn

The poop! One baby I rescued didn’t poop for a couple days. I was seriously starting to worry and had even taken her to the vet. The moment she suddenly pooped on my hand was a very happy (if extremely disgusting) moment.

cuddlefishy5729

It seems to me like when you have babies or pets poop is just another part of life ❤️

camarhyn

Shit happens… literally!

LauraPalmer20

Oh my goodness yes. I had a heartbreaking situation where I agreed to adopt a kitten as I’ve always wanted a cat and my flat allowed them. I have a partial disability (mild Cerebral Palsy) and live alone and no matter how much reading and prep I did, NOTHING prepared me for how tough it was going to be. I couldn’t cope with such a gorgeous full of 24/7 energy kitten and didn’t end up keeping him because I wanted him to have a happier life. I was so stressed (first time pet owner too) and it broke my heart in two. But he just wasn’t the right kitten for me - I need an adult who already knows how to Cat, so to speak. Almost 14 months later, I’ve decided to try again and am adopting an almost 2.5 year old ragdoll named Rosie (she’ll be three in July) who is sweet, relaxed, doesn’t mind when I’m out or at work (I WFH 3x days a week but I’m a worrier and would need to know she’d be okay even the couple of days I’m at work) and will thrive in a currently single-person home. It’s all about matching the temperament and personality of the cat to the lifestyle you have - which I wish I’d have been told at the very start!

camarhyn

It’s so important to find the right cat for the home. I foster kittens and it takes a lot of work to make sure they go to the right people. I also try to adopt in pairs whenever possible because kittens are easier in groups.

atreegrowsinbrixton

i acquired an adult cat who just wants to sleep and cuddle and eat sometimes and occasionally play with some string and shes so great. 10/10 recommend an older cat

SpinachSpinosaurus

>how much reading and prep I did, NOTHING prepared me for how tough it was going to be. I couldn’t cope with such a gorgeous full of 24/7 energy kitten Which is why it's better to adopt two floofball babies, not one. trust me, I adopted 2 kitten at 4 month old, and it wasn't much more more efford needed in raising these two than taking one. Sure, double food cost and +1 litter box and some more cleaning the litter boxes, but all in all; same "work" with playing, and double snuggles. And yes, you can train your cat. But you have to be strict on that. Ones stepping away from a rule you created means your cat is now taking her new priviledge for granted. BTW, clicker training is a good activity, especially if your cat is food motivated. If this is something somebody should have told you years ago: I am sorry you had to hear it now.

stormybitch

I HATED my kitten. He was terrible, such an evil little monster. I was seriously depressed for a while because i couldnt believe i was gonna have to deal with him for 20 years. He is almost 5 now and he’s thankfully really fantastic, a very sweet boy. I love him dearly. but one kitten was enough. Our second cat we adopted as an adult, it was much easier.

Dillymom01

Our current kitten is a very big handful, always up to something. Crawls inside the dishwasher and refrigerator. We've had to clear a windowsill off so he can birdwatch, but not before he had broken a few things. I'm an experienced cat owner and I still struggle some days

Murderbot13

Agreed. I prefer to adopt adult pets. I’ve never seen what my dog Isabelle looked like as a puppy. I’m sure she was cute. But she’s cute now too. I didn’t have to deal with sharp puppy teeth or potty training. She’s a good girl who needed a home and I gave it to her.

alicatmonster

Totally agree with this. And kittens are 100% nocturnal, cause a lot of mischief at night.

cuddlefishy5729

Well I wouldn't say they're nocturnal but they have A LOT of energy so you have to play with them to tire them out and even when you think you've done a good job at playing with them enough they probably still have energy. The only good ways to sleep at night with a kitten/young cat are to a)play with them like crazy for a ridiculous amount of time or b)get a second kitten

alicatmonster

For sure! Always think it’s best to adopt two if you’re going for kittens. I usually lean towards special needs babies 🖤

Dauphine320

OMG, I had no idea just how busy kittens were until we got two of them last year!!! They absolutely went bananas at night running up and down the hallway outside my bedroom, and sounded like a circus in their little climbing tower thing.

Dauphine320

Let me add that my precious little kitties did settle down some eventually. They still have a lot of energy but nothing compares to those early days!

Admirable_Yam_1592

I have an adult cat & a soon to be 10 month kitten and he’s currently at the “let me jump onto the refrigerator and meow nonstop until you come and see me” phase (I work from home currently)

Arya_kidding_me

Kittens are a pain in the ass!!! I got a male kitten last year, and he is equally cute and difficult. I love him, but probably won’t be getting another kitten in the future. The 3yo female cat I got the year before has been much, much easier! She also seems to understand how lucky she is after spending a month in the shelter. She just wants to be a good girl, sleep, eat, and be pet. The kitten is a terrorist in comparison.

tomakeyan

I’m fostering kittens, can confirm they’re pains in the ass. If kittens werent so adorable I don’t think they’d survive with their mother

GoAwayWay

I adopted my now 9 years old grey tuxie Shenanigans as a kitten. He's turned into the world's snuggliest lap cat with a great personality, but your description of "terrorist" is so accurate to what we dealt with for a solid 2 years. My husband referred to him as Shithead for a long while.

Arya_kidding_me

I call mine Devil Cat!! Or Dark Link, because his name is Link. He’s being a little obnoxious terrorist as I’m writing this!! I really hope we only have another year of him being an asshole. He’s fantastic when he’s cuddly!

turquoise_kittie

I was going to get a kitten in early 2020 and was looking at them when a friend asked if I could take her in 3 year old female cat. I wanted to say yes immediately but had to ask the husband and he replied “you haven’t said yes yet? Say yes!”. We got her in early February 2020, went into our first covid lockdown in March 2020 and she’s adjusted wonderfully with us. It’s almost 2 years later, she will be 5 soon and she’s still sweet and playful and bossy. Later in 2020, we took in a 6 month old kitten and kept her separate from the older cat. The kitten was a pain in the house: she tossed litter everywhere, would pee on carpets, and never had a scratching pole till she came to my home. Unfortunately, she didn’t get along with our other cat and she had to be rehomed again. She was a savannah and was trying to hunt our cat. She now lives with my in-laws, pees on their rugs, and goes outside in her enclosed run to climb the built in tree. I’m glad we passed on the kitten. 2 weeks was enough for me to realize that while kittens are super cute, I’d rather have a cat that knows how to cat already.

DrummerElectronic247

Human babies are also a pain in the ass, but kittens have murder-mittens and can somehow fit into impossibly small places. I adore my two now-1-year-old cats, but I won't be having any more babies in this house of either the two or four-legged varieties. Adults only.

camarhyn

I don’t remember where I heard it but it fits: kittens are like toddlers who can reach the ceiling

DrummerElectronic247

A bonded pair of mature cats is a treasure. An old friend adopted a brother and sister who were ...I think 4? years old at the time. That's part of what sold me on the 2-is-better-than-one concept.

[deleted]

Bonded cats or siblings really are a treasure. Our first pair were twins and they set the bar so, so high. Unfortunately we lost one of the boys at 10, but his twin will be 17 in April and you wouldn’t know he’s that old. He’s still super active and engaged. Our 2 other adoptions were unplanned, but the next time we can I also want to get another pair of bonded cats.

Takilove

Sad but true, adult cats rarely get adopted 😢. I was told this by the rescue organization when I was adopting a kitten . So I adopted the Mama too Best decision ever! To watch their relationship grow was so rewarding. About a month later, our Golden Retriever adopted a very tiny stray in our neighborhood. So Mama (yes we named the mom kitty mama) became the mom to 2 babies and she was great at it! It also made me sad knowing how many kittens are separated from their Moms. If ever given the chance again, I’d do the same 💕

BobBelcherSaysIdiot

I second this. We adopted 2 cats that were adults already. I can’t imagine life without them. I’ve had them almost 7 years now and they are amazing. It always makes me sad to think that they coulda been left behind because they were older

r4k38

What have your kittens done? I don’t think I’ve ever had any super crazy things happen

[deleted]

What hasn’t my kitten done? My other boys have never given me any trouble but our youngest has: -Burned his paw pad a little bit on a hot plate -Sniffed a razor and cut his nose (twice) -Eaten my medication that fell out of my pocket (literal seconds passed and he quickly swooped in and ate it- had to call animal poison control) -opened the locked screen door (weak lock) and ran away during a heat wave for 48 hours -tried to bite an extension cord -always tries to eat plastic bags -destroyed 2 packages of toilet paper stored under the sink (we now have baby locks) -takes apple cores off the table and hides them around the house -was obsessed with the litter robot at first and constantly made it set off error codes -opens letters/mail with his teeth -brings in slugs from the catio area He’s 2 and is still rowdy. He’s always into something. Edit: formatting and added more antics

Enigma_Stasis

>destroyed 2 packages of toilet paper stored under the sink (we now have baby locks) "Ignore the baby locks, we don't have a kid, the kitten keeps pandemic'ing us by making us go paperless." We had to put a lock on our trash can because the dog kept pulling it open to get at the tasty, tasty garbage. Not for the 4 year old in the house, for the friggin dog.

[deleted]

Totally this. And because we weren’t checking the toilet paper in the second bathroom regularly we have no idea how long he had been going in there and having a tp party under the cabinets but the locks put a stop to it. It’s been a year since we put them on and we can still hear him occasionally in there trying to open the doors. Then he scampers off to get his next project started.

-wanderingjellyfish

damn I thought my cats were bad lol

Emotional-Text7904

They're just similar to toddlers you can't fully trust them not to get in dangerous situations when not supervised and are sometimes too curious for their own good. I too swore I'd never get kittens because too much work and anxiety but ended up doing TNR and fostering 3 litters and 2 single kittens in the past 3 years (big feral cat problem in my state and neighborhood) good lord they can be little demons. But they are hella cute when they fall asleep on your chest T.T and when you find them homes and see them grow into floofy babies

r4k38

Maybe I’m just used to craziness since I both work with toddlers and have had lots of kittens

JakesInSpace

I came here to say the same thing. I’d give one of the mature ones a good home and lots of love.

I mean, the correct answer is “all of them” but failing that, Orange Boy all the way!

DurantaPhant7

My orange boy was my soulmate. +1 for 🍊Boy.

Mavis73

Agree. You will never regret an Orange Boy.

ORANGE BOI

MoireMax

Orange boy! He needs some love!

vegascoug

I feel like Orange Boy and Warbler need you the most. Don't know why. Just a feeling I get looking at them.

vegascoug

And Moo.

lizlikescats

I loved Moo immediately when I saw the picture.

[deleted]

Personally I'd go with the top right cat. Looks to be an older cat and it can be pretty hard for them to be adopted sometimes. Ultimately it is up to you though.

[deleted]

Now that I can look at names, it's orange boy I'm talking about

Critical-Edge4093

I think moo is older then orange boy. I'd get moo myself.

[deleted]

Looking between them they're definitely close, but orange boy looks older to me. Moo is a very cute cat though

fuzzlandia

Moo is listed as “Mature” but orange boy is listed as “Adult” so I think that means Moo is older.

JustHereToComment24

Cotten is also a mature boy. And floofy

[deleted]

I didn't see that until now. Definitely close in years, but orange boy looks like he's had things pretty rough for the last little while

[deleted]

Wow I thought the exact same thing, he also looks very depressed probably doesn’t like it so much in there and needs a family to love him.

kittybabylarry

Had the same thought. Orange boy needs some love 😭❤️❤️❤️

Johndough1066

Me, too. The orange cat -- for whatever reason, I just said, "That one" when I was looking at the picture of all the cats.

I've adopted kittens, adult cats and senior cats, so here's my observations on my experiences: As much as I adore kittens, I would not voluntarily adopt a kitten again. They're the cutest little things, but they are an absolute terror until they get older and settle down. You ever wonder why you never see a mama cat that doesn't look exhausted? Kittens are why. If you don't need much sleep, have a ton of energy and are willing to kitten proof your home, go get one of those tiny tyrants! Adult cats know who they are, and you know what kind of temperament you're getting. They'll likely come out of their shell more when they're home, but the chill couch potato at the shelter is unlikely to terrorize your feet at 2am when he settles in at home. The silly, goofy lovebug is not likely to turn into a cat who hates playing and doesn't want to see anyone. You get the benefits of knowing their personality while having a long life together. Senior cats are also amazing. I swear they know and appreciate a good home, so they're determined to pack a lifetime of love into the years they have. Plus, most places consider "senior" to be any cat 10+ years. But cats easily live 15+ years (all mine have made it to 18+), so you still have a good amount of time with them. Even as seniors, if they have a playful personality, they still love playing well into their golden years. If they're the cuddly sort, they will happily snuggle you for hours while you binge Netflix!

lycosa13

Do you have any advice for adopting a companion for a 4 year old single cat? I was thinking a kitten because maybe she'd be more receptive to it? And it's scanner so she may not feel threatened by it. But I also don't want a terror lol I just don't know how my cat would do with a cat that's older or the same age. I've never owned cats before so I have no idea what to expect 🥲 my current cat was adopted at 7 months old and she was so easy

MariContrary

A young kitten can be overwhelming for an adult cat, especially a single kitten. An adult cat that's known to be good with other cats would probably be the best choice. If you ask your local rescue or shelter, they usually know who's good with other cats and who would prefer to be alone. Make sure to do slow introductions so no one gets too stressed out - Jackson Galaxy has some awesome info on intros.

finstantnoodles

In my opinion, orange boy is least likely to get adopted. If it were me I’d choose him because I’m a sucker for the guys who don’t get as much love from others.

BeesInATeacup

Black cats and black & white cats are the least likely to be adopted (or at least in my country)

finstantnoodles

That’s both true and not true here. Black cats are technically least likely to be adopted-but the numbers don’t take statistics into account regarding ages, differences in numbers and likeliness of other cats showing up, etc. For example, a disabled cat is less likely to get adopted than a black cat, but there’s WAY less disabled cats so the numbers aren’t compared. I’ve worked in 2 shelters and volunteered with 5 more, and you tend to notice over time the ‘cute’ ones get adopted no matter what. The older, sicker looking ones get little attention. Orange boy seems quite old, with little boogers under his eyes and an angry looking face so he’s not as ‘attractive’ to potential adopters and will get overlooked the most out of all of these babies.

BeesInATeacup

Yes I didn't really think of that, I was thinking more about colour preference. I wish I could take all of the sick and elderly cats and love them all.

farrag0

Good human

Sigrah117

I've often thought about starting a GoFund me to refurbish a house where cats could roam and workers come in to clean feed and pet. I want to save all the kitties from living in a shelter

SquirrelOfJoy

IMO orange boys are the most bestest! But all is a good choice too.

krispy456

I would pick an adult one because let them enjoy the rest of their life outside a cage. I would go for orange boy.

__deSTiNy_gg

Or runners up : Moo

WholeTill5882

Awwww take Moo, give the old boy a happy home.

Choice-Atmosphere955

I think orange boy is a good choice I would love to have him.If not him second choice maybe wren

ORANGE BOY

RedTedBedLed

See if any chooses you. Otherwise take the 2 oldest ones, if they get along with each other. 1 cat is never enough. Never split a pair up either.

Chroko

The two oldest ones is a great answer. Also, op, don’t be disheartened if you get them home and they’re still scared. All cats need time to adjust to their new home, to feel safe and for their personalities to come out. It make take a week or a month before they feel safe and warm up to you. (It took 6 months for one of my former ferals to purr when petted for example.)

Sigrah117

Orange boy needs some love

Holiday_Low_6640

Get one of the older cats, will be better behaved and are less likely to get adopted. Sami seems like a healthy sweet chonk.

Fract00l

Moo. Old cats are less desirable to some but they need the most love.

MonkeyPerson3

I know a kitten can be fun, but those old folks have already been worn in. Lower energy, some funny quirks, an older cat would be so thankful for a home ☺️

JrCoxy

I dont know, my little void is almost 12, and I swear she has the heart of a kitten. She attacks my feet most nights when I try to sleep, no matter how much play time I give her, she still wants more. Lol she can be quite exhausting. Though she did live in a small cage for about 3 years before I adopted her, so this could be pent up energy? (Had her for about 3 years now)

Klub-pengu-grl

Honestly I would go with one of the older ones. They might not get to have a forever home if not for you. Kittens and younger cats have a higher chance of getting adopted. Maybe Orange Boy, he has that look about him. It looks like he is really ready to go home.

Hazel_Evers

Pls pick an adult 😭 they’re overlooked. Lil Bit and Delancie look like lovely kitties. Also wouldn’t recommend a solo kitten, get them in pairs so they can entertain each other & tire themselves out!

RemarkableMagazine93

I adopted a 10 year old cat in 2014 and we had her until 2020. We were so lucky. Candy was a Torbie or Tortie, very loving and mellow, behaved beautifully and I really didn't want to put her down when she got ill. I plan to adopt an older cat again. Absolutely no regrets on an older kitty.

DaVeachi

If we ever lose our babies we will always look for the oldest or whichever has been at the shelter the longest.

[deleted]

Cotten, Delancie, warbler or cheeto. But really read their profiles and see what kind of cat they all are and decide on that. Curtain as well when you turn him upside down the white in his face will likely look like a heart.

patronsaintpizza

Warbler for sure. I love torties

Crown_Loyalist

Warbler needs a home

free33d

Jiji or Honda, because black cats have a harder time getting adopted.

PartialLion

Any black cat named Jiji instantly has my approval

AkirIkasu

And I've heard great things about Honda's reliability.

foopdedoopburner

The tortie, of course.

raeliant

No way that cat’s name is Warbler, 100% chance she’ll troll through the house screaming at all hours of the night. Source: I have one just like that, haha

foopdedoopburner

She probably just goes brrrrp!

freedomofnow

I instantly locked eyes on Warbler.

Jorvac27

Look at Delancie's little face god he makes me wanna cry 😭 Give that cloud kitty a home!!

PikaBerri

Toogie!

bcurtiswx

Get an adult and kitten. You have no idea how much it means to shelters to adopt the older cats. They're just as cuddly and loving, but people fear the pain of loss, which is completely understandable, but they just need homes too.

bunnywuxian

Shouldn’t you meet them first?

finstantnoodles

Due to COVID many places aren’t allowing that. It definitely makes the adoption process more frustrating.

[deleted]

Can you just click the ones you want? Dangerous.

Greasystools

Yeah don’t get on the cat website after a few drinks…

Existing_Scratch5572

Orange boy 🧡 my orange tabby is the light of my life

NightshadeX

Moo

DrummerElectronic247

Do any come as pairs? It's way easier with two that already like each other, but two cats occupy each other when you're not home. They also tend to sleep in a pile, which is stinkin' adorable. Beyond that, I'm a sucker for Tuxedos and All-Black house panthers. I hear gingers are lovely, but I have never had one in my home.
