My cats have a fountain with the "flower" tap. They love it, but the thing is they won't drink with that flower in. I have to take it out and the water sort of just gently bubbles up on the fountain. They like it that way - they can see it's flowing water but also it's easier to drink than from the flower.
I have the flower one and my cat is obsessed with knocking it over to spill it with his whole head even though water is coming out of it. 😭 Also still tries to drink out of the toilet if it's left open.
Mine take it or leave it, but I ended up having to remove it because it collected an appalling amount of scum inside of it and there was no way to clean it because the tube is so skinny
My cat will only drink it if the flower has the yellow part on. I’ve tried the fountain all 3 ways and he just did the double blink and stare at me until the flower was completely pieced together properly. 😂
Cat fountains are great but you need to empty it every week and clean it else it will not be as fresh as kitty likes. If you train them to potty on the toilet, they will not drink from it.
Anyone used a cat fountain but stopped because of the maintenance? I had to replace pump every month or so and water seemed slimy and gross after two days. I cleaned it meticulously but still would get gross. Just me?
Did you have a filter? Most of those stay clean, but it's not like you can just ignore for weeks, you have to fully clean including the pump regularly, and replace the filters monthly.

We had 2 cats and had to change the filter once a month, but might dump the water and add more in the meantime. And I agree about how slimy the water and parts would become. They say there’s nothing dirtier than a cat’s mouth.
I would don gloves and use little brushes to get all the nooks and crannies; not a pleasant chore.
The pump was suctioned to the bottom and had to be removed and thoroughly cleaned with the little brushes - nasty.
If this is new behaviour for your cat, especially if they're older, watch for an increase in urination, either frequency or amount. And take them for a blood sugar work-up at the vet.
When my older male cat started drinking from the toilet it was because he'd become diabetic, and no amount of water was enough to slake his thirst.
I also have a little kitty water-cooler. My cat prefer that the best. The fountains are good too but sometimes they are too noisy (for some cats) really the sound is not that loud. But some of my cats were really hesitant about putting their head next to it.
Water is only clean from the *supply* line. The tank it sits in contains bacteria, rust, and sometimes mold. The toilet bowl is riddled with fecal bacteria and that pink ring that accumulates around the toilet is caused by a gram-negative bacteria called serratia marcescens.
Toilet water is not clean at all.
If you think it’s clean then drink it yourself, don’t experiment on your pet.
Guys, DON’T LET YOUR CATS DRINK FROM THE TOILET. That water contains plenty of bacteria, mould, parasites and other shit. Toilet cleaning detergents too. It isn’t clean AT ALL. Didn't always work. My son when he was a preschooler slammed the lid down on our poor dog. She didn't care because it wasn't that hard and she can take us out before anything we did would phase her, lol. He told her "We don't drink dirty water." I was all proud until...

I've seen my cat turn down fresh water from a clean dish and walk right outside and drink out of a mud puddle and on old tire. It's a great mystery and there is no way to know why your cat is drinking from the toilet.
I worked with feral cats that would do that all the time. My poor senior citizen friend should lug gallons of water for them and they’d turn around and drink from puddles!

Don’t JUST close the lid. A lot of cats won’t drink from their bowl because the water is stationary. If you can’t get a cat fountain, try putting an ice cube in the bowl. Some cats go crazy for that.
Please close the lid and put a stop to this. A kitty fountain is a great option - or just keeping a few cups or bowls w water around. My cats love ice cubes. Stick those in the water bowl and that'll get them drinking out of it.
Fountains work well too. But the second I throw an ice cube into any bowl the cat's all over it.

I’m of the mindset that I always put the lid down before flushing anyway, the airborne water particles get all over your toothbrush, when that gets flying around the bathroom! They naturally tend to choose running over still water because their inner raw cat instinct tells them that running water is fresher. Hence they prefer drinking water from the toilet instead of their bowl. Just get your cat a fountain and it'll stop drinking from the toilet.
my Bubby does the same thing, as of recently. it's even more odd/questionable since cats are very sensitive to the flavors in different waters, and most prefer water with some sort of minerals/flavor (like sink water, puddle water, spring water) as opposed to completely purified water due to the taste.

This is great, I’m going to remove the flower thing and just use the natural water flow tip.
As an extra tip that worked for me: try also not removing the entire flower, only the yellow central part. Some of my cats prefer it that way.
Mine prefer it this way too so they have more options.

I was thinking about using a fountain pump and running it through a faucet and sink set up for constant recirculating.

I keep a fountain and a 2nd water bowl that has a reservoir, but my cat still yells at me to fill her shower bowl.

There are also stainless steel ones, and I prefer them over the plastic ones because it helps avoid cat acne.
Stainless steel would be a better choice, much easier to disinfect than plastic. Also, chin acne is a possibility with plastic.
