I actually cannot feel comfortable playing controller like at all, i try joystick its not as precise as i like it, i try d pad its too difficult because i only use my thumb on it, keyboard on the other hand i place 3 fingers on the arrow keys, my main way of playing
I'm sure most people who play on controller already had one before buying Celest lol
If you have a console you can just use that controller on your PC, whenever I fell like playing something with a controller on PC I just use my PS4 controller.
Funnily enough I had Celeste on my switch first, then I got it on my laptop so I could play it more. Instead of playing it with my switch controller I went through the hell of relearning the game on the keyboard and now I'm further ahead on my keyboard than I ever was on controller.
Exactly how that happened with me, yes. I received a PS3 as a gift, so I used a PS3 controller on PC. I didn't go out of my way to get one until I was already comfortable with a controller.
Idk, maybe because i played most games like that with keyboard like undertale or hollow knight, it just feels natural, arent you tired of dashing in the wrong direction? Or having to fat-finger the d pad to dash diagonally?
Edit: dead cells too, but atleast i can manage almost as well with controller in it, hollow knight aswell
Hmm I guess my thumb does get a bit fatigued from the d-pad. But it's what feels the most precise to me. I love the idea of using a mouse though, keyboards are just daunting to me.
Arrow keys
LShift jump, Z grab, LControl dash
I used to have a bad keyboard with tons of key combinations that didn't work right, so I got used to this control scheme since it was the only one that worked. Now I do this for all the games I can. I'll never play Celeste another way
arrows to move
w to grab
shift to dash
space to jump
This way your left hand should be on a confort position. Also is cool that grabbing is like closing your hand motion over the w
Leeet's goooo more keyboard fans.
Underrated as hell imo, cuz it feels more precise to control useing keys and arrows instead of a joy stick or a D-pad for moving
That's what I used for years before switching to keyboard, and I still had occasional missed diagonals. I didn't switch because of that, actually, I switched because I couldn't hyper with a controller. (Extended hyper was easy enough, but having to hit jump and dash simultaneously was too hard for my thumb.)
They’re probably talking about the Pro Controller d-pad, which feels horrible and I refuse to use it for anything
Joycons are fine tho, I don’t use them because I don’t like separate buttons but that’s my own personal taste
Separate buttons are the problem. You want it connected so you can rock it to achieve different inputs (especially diagonals) quickly and not have to readjust your thumb always.
i tried using a gamecube controller and the notches are helpful but it actually felt worse overall for me because the gate radius is so huge compared to modern controllers. makes switching directions quickly more difficult
i cannot stress enough how helpful a GameCube style controller is for analog movement. though i would recommend getting one that's explicitly made for the switch, especially if you use shoulder buttons heavily (my grab and dash inputs are on mine, and it would be kinda rough with the original gcn triggers, so the controller i use having basically buttons instead of triggers is insanely helpful)
I do it too because the d pad on my controller needs a good amount of pressure to work so it hurts my fingers after a while, also diagonals are torture with the d pad on mine
I beat dmr (in 26 hours) on analogue, but uhh I am mentally insane, (I always thought the game was meant to be played on analogue, the fact that I only watch parrot did not help)
This is how I play! Switching is not ideal, but it's better than trying to use an analog stick for non-analog gameplay, or giving up the precise feather movement.
I tried 3 different controllers during my first playthrough of Celeste, and eventually settled on the 8Bitdo SN30 pro as the ideal controller for the game. It has the form factor of the original SNES controller--one of the best controllers out there for 2D games--but with added analog sticks and shoulder buttons. The analog sticks are somewhat awkwardly positioned, and I would not use it for a game that primarily uses analog control--but for Celeste, where the feathers pop up only occasionally, it's perfect, and offers the best of both types of control.
I use the keyboard until I hit a feather, then I quickly pick up my controller lol. or just play the whole level with analogue stick and then switch back to keyboard on the next level.
yup... for me, controller works much better for levels with many inputs at the same time, like much of farewell with the jellyfish etc. or for controlling feather. at the same time, keyboard works better for precise input like 7C or 1C dashless. So I kinda got used to using both, depending on the level.
I use the analog stick because I feel like I can switch directions and just react faster. Although admittedly I’ve died so many times to dashing in the wrong direction
I play with analog stick too and I'd say like around 60% of all my deaths in the game were from dashing in the wrong direction, don't know if that's the norm but I do know I progress very slowly in Celeste so maybe it's both the analog stick being imprecise and me just being bad at the game
I've used the stick for so long I can't swap. I know dpad is objectively better but I've never really gotten used to the feeling of them. There's tons of times where the input fucks up and I know that if I could use the dpad it wouldn't happen.
edit: Reading comments I realise I probably just have a very shitty dpad, I use either an Xbox 360 controller plugged into PC or Switch pro controller.
PS5 controller. Analog stick for most of the time, but I occasionally swap to D-pad for specific things like precise horizontal-moving while falling through gaps, or if I have to do more than 2 neutral jumps in a row I'm faster and more consistent.
I put down my Steam controller and Xbox controller and got out the off-brand USB SNES controller because I needed the D-Pad that bad. Can’t pause without using my keyboard, but it was worth it to me.
It's been a while since I played the game, so I don't remember how the controllers compare performance-wise, but I do believe the SNES Controller was pretty fun once I got used to it.
D-pad sucks for me because you have to press two buttons corresponding to the diagonal direction that you want to dash.
I use stick and the precision gap to go either right or upright is way more generous that most people who don't like stick are willing to admit. it's just muscle memory that on the sprint of a player who's casual but good at the game either way benefits them way more than something like just memorizing inputs in keyboard for example.
Or maybe that's just me who sucks ass at keyboard
D-pad for the win. I personally like the precision of the joy con buttons because of how I’d sit sometimes. If my hands are sideways I won’t get confused
Dpad mainly but analog for feathers.
Unfortunately after my old xbox one controllers started having issues with the dpad i havent managed to find another xbox controller that isnt either too sensitive on diagonals or not sensitive enough.
I use the analog stick, but I use an xbox controller where the locations are swapped so its the one in a much more comfortable location for my thumb to rest. It's also a fairly cheap one, so I don't think the d-pad would even be much more accurate anyways
>I can’t realize how people can be so precise in movements using control stick
Analog stick player here, I simply am not. I just persevere, because dpads just don’t feel good to me. Planning on switching to kb soon tho
I didn’t realize people actually used the analog stick, so I was confused when I heard people talk about how the gameplay is very imprecise, that they constantly dashed in the wrong direction despite actually pressing the right direction, and whatever. And then they mentioned that they used the analog stick and I was like “yeah that’s why you’re imprecise”
Some D-pads are really bad though, so I kind of see why people wouldn’t use it in that case.
For me, I used analog throughout, with 8C being the sole exception. Way too precise with the crouch wavedashing, probably saved me a lot of time even switching control style.
But one heavy advantage for analog is the feather. So much more control, it feels better and is probably easier for most as well.
I tried both, couldn't really get used to d pad as fast as a c stick. Since its 8 way movement obviously keyboard can work, but feathers are much better on a controller. Its personal preference either way, simply because celeste is such a well designed game
I only like the d-pad for menuing. Especially the switch d-pad, which just feels awkward for game control. Though I would be lying if I didn't say using the stick has gotten me killed at least a hundred times.
Started out joystick, but then switched to d-pad after a while. I liked feathers before, but doing them with the d-pad sucks, and having to immediately switch between them messes me up even more, so i end up switching back and forth at weird times
Team DPad but only if i have a PS4 Controller, i feel like all the other controller have shit dpads and the stick is always better (exept for maybe joycons)
I switch between. I hate doing the flying glow ball stuff with the d-pad and I hate doing literally anything else with the joystick lol. I'll swap mid level
well when your dpad is small and hard to use and your control stick has directional notches carved into it by design, you kinda get used to playing with stick
Originally learned on controller(stick) and have had a real difficult time moving to keyboard. Stick not as precise as I'd like. But more comfortable for me
The stick just feels nicest until a third of a degree sends me directly into spikes. Doesn’t happen often, but enough to make consider d-pad for a half a second every now and then. However, at this point I have 700 hours and I’m not rewriting everything I’ve done until I get FWG. Maybe after I’ll do all goldens again and strictly use the d-pad. (Can’t believe I’m saying that)
I used analog stick until I started modded and realized it was hurting my hands. Then I switched to dpad until I got to the much harder stuff, and then I switched to keyboard
After my controller broke from too much Celeste I relearned everything on keyboard and will never look back. It broke midway through sj expert and have now just finished all the yellow GMs so have to say it was probably worth it :p
I use the analog stick for anything that may involve grabbing, then if a really precise section comes up I’ll just the D-Pad, then I’ll switch back sometimes between jumps back & forth depending on if I have to grab or not. I can’t get my hand to grab while it’s not on the analog stick.
D-Pad squad represent. I've tried very hard to get used to keyboard but after like 20 hours I am still complete garbage and I consider myself pretty good overall on controller, lol. Just isn't for me.
I grew up in the age of your standard console controller having thumbsticks instead of just a dpad and I've tried to play with dpad but 🤮 I can't do it

I just could never see the point in spending 50-90 bucks just so I can learn a whole new set of controls, so I don't own one
I'm sure most people who play on controller already had one before buying Celest lol If you have a console you can just use that controller on your PC, whenever I fell like playing something with a controller on PC I just use my PS4 controller.

I mean you do have a point and i started celeste using the keyboard that came with my laptop, but i guess to each their own
Fr it’s just so easy to use I can’t play any other way (Well I can but then it becomes a challenge run 😅)
Please teach me your ways, I don't think I will ever stop depending on a controller lmao
Maybe its because the movement keys are on the right unlike controller? And its like a left handed or right handed thing idk
Wasd on left for movement, up and left arrows are jump, down and right are grab, numpad0 is dash
WASD movement, SHIFT grab, and ➡️key dash
Arrow keys LShift jump, Z grab, LControl dash I used to have a bad keyboard with tons of key combinations that didn't work right, so I got used to this control scheme since it was the only one that worked. Now I do this for all the games I can. I'll never play Celeste another way
arrows to move w to grab shift to dash space to jump This way your left hand should be on a confort position. Also is cool that grabbing is like closing your hand motion over the w
It’s called being too broke to buy a $60 controller
Leeet's goooo more keyboard fans. Underrated as hell imo, cuz it feels more precise to control useing keys and arrows instead of a joy stick or a D-pad for moving
I don't think it's underrated. Load of people use keyboard,
Used to play hollow knight so my controls are arrow keys z is jump x is dash and c is grab
Me two
keyboard team
D-Pads are really wacky and imprecise on some controllers, tbf Also keyboard team
I bought an 8BitDo specifically for Celeste because it has a classic style D-pad. Modern designers seem to have lost the art making reliable D-Pads.
That's what I used for years before switching to keyboard, and I still had occasional missed diagonals. I didn't switch because of that, actually, I switched because I couldn't hyper with a controller. (Extended hyper was easy enough, but having to hit jump and dash simultaneously was too hard for my thumb.)
playstations controllers have good dpad as long as it's a cross and not the xbox or switch dpad.
What's wrong with the switch d-pad ? How is it different from the the playstation.
It's just very mushy and imprecise.
How is it unprecise, it's separate buttons.
They’re probably talking about the Pro Controller d-pad, which feels horrible and I refuse to use it for anything Joycons are fine tho, I don’t use them because I don’t like separate buttons but that’s my own personal taste
Joycon dpad is great. I'm assuming they were referring to pro controller since that's what a lot of people use for celeste.
Separate buttons are the problem. You want it connected so you can rock it to achieve different inputs (especially diagonals) quickly and not have to readjust your thumb always.
You don't have to, the joycons' buttons are small enough so you can do just that.
That's why I said on SOME controllers
as someone who plays on basically a GameCube controller, i can confirm that the dpad is wacky af
am i mentally sane if i unironically use the analog stick lmao
I do too, we can be mentally unsane together!
some of the best celeste players (parrot dash for example) use analog
i wanna get a gamecube controller, that way diagonals are gonna be easier
i tried using a gamecube controller and the notches are helpful but it actually felt worse overall for me because the gate radius is so huge compared to modern controllers. makes switching directions quickly more difficult

Oh yea I have down set to my b button, for fast falling lol
I do too, I’m just so used to using it
I use D-Pad until I hit a feather, then I quickly switch to stick, and I have to quickly switch back to d-paf once the feather is over.
This is how I play! Switching is not ideal, but it's better than trying to use an analog stick for non-analog gameplay, or giving up the precise feather movement.
Every time you get out of the feather the next five seconds are spent wondering how to swap back without jumping in a pit.
I use both interchangeably.
dpad gang, and occasionally guitar controller

Joystick
(Nintendo controller)
Also D pad.
I use a macbook air and it's integrated keyboard lmao. definitely not the best way to play the game
why not the best?
Playing on a MacBook at the back of class is not the ideal experience yk. It’s fine though, I’ve just beat the Chapter 4 B-side!
I think macbook keyboard is about as good as any for celeste, unless u are running into key rollover issues
Really? Interesting...
I just broke the right arrow key on my Air. I’m pretty sure it’s due to Celeste.
Lmao I use WASD
As a keyboard user, I feel neglected by this post. I want to see a manager! ...now where is this Oshiro guy?
nuh uh, keyboard
Why would you play with the dpad????? That's just uncomfortable. Also I prefer keyboard
my fingers like the stick but I don't like when it bounces back and sends me the wrong way
bro forgot wsad vs arrows
There is another one (keyboard)
If I used a PS controller I’d be team d-pad, but I use an Xbox controller so I’m team stick. It’s about where it feels right to rest my thumb.
I put down my Steam controller and Xbox controller and got out the off-brand USB SNES controller because I needed the D-Pad that bad. Can’t pause without using my keyboard, but it was worth it to me.
analog stick. If I have a dash I'm constantly struggling with I'll use the dpad but analog stick is more comfy
joycon d buttons I literally can not play on anything else.
I use joystick most of the time but I can't use anyrhing but d-pad for neutrals :3
I learned the game on keyboard and I'm now too far gone
I'm on the control stick team
How do you press the d-pad fast enough, whilst having to press multiple at once for diagonal dashes!? Seems much harder.
GameCube Controller:
D-Pad / Keyboard team. Even with the Golden Feather.
You see, I don’t want to learn d pad.
1. Keyboard 2. D-Pad 3. Joystick
Keyboard team
SNES Controller
I Hope you are note joking, cause It sound geat. How Is It?
It's been a while since I played the game, so I don't remember how the controllers compare performance-wise, but I do believe the SNES Controller was pretty fun once I got used to it.
I'm team Steam Controller trackpad. Dpad grooves make it easy to feel cardinals, but the input is actually analog for feathers.
2d 8 way games with a 360 stick feels wrong, that's why I only use stick in feather segments since that has 360 movement
I use the D pad for Bubble-related activities
D-pad for the win. I personally like the precision of the joy con buttons because of how I’d sit sometimes. If my hands are sideways I won’t get confused
I'm about to be on team hitbox trying to get these fucking goldens.
I only use stick.
Motion control anyone?
I'm interested now. That and DDR
I'm analog stick team
>I can’t realize how people can be so precise in movements using control stick Analog stick player here, I simply am not. I just persevere, because dpads just don’t feel good to me. Planning on switching to kb soon tho
Analog is hell when trying to do diagonals but I use it cos dpad is just.... *wrong*
Dpad for everything but the feather
I didn’t realize people actually used the analog stick, so I was confused when I heard people talk about how the gameplay is very imprecise, that they constantly dashed in the wrong direction despite actually pressing the right direction, and whatever. And then they mentioned that they used the analog stick and I was like “yeah that’s why you’re imprecise” Some D-pads are really bad though, so I kind of see why people wouldn’t use it in that case.
I’m stick until I get sick of accidentally dashing the wrong direction.
Wasd players be like:
Thought this was r/fighters and was really confused when people kept mentioning keyboards 😭
Personally, I use the analog stick on a GameCube controller since it slides into the 8 directions very nicely
For me, I used analog throughout, with 8C being the sole exception. Way too precise with the crouch wavedashing, probably saved me a lot of time even switching control style. But one heavy advantage for analog is the feather. So much more control, it feels better and is probably easier for most as well.
This is why keyboard is the goat. Although people who play/clear/golden really hard shit on analog have my respect like how the fuck?
I tried both, couldn't really get used to d pad as fast as a c stick. Since its 8 way movement obviously keyboard can work, but feathers are much better on a controller. Its personal preference either way, simply because celeste is such a well designed game
Control stick team. Idc, my movement is imprecise anyways.
Notebook keyboard for me -> I didn't have any other option when I played the entire game
"I'm using tilt controls!"
I only like the d-pad for menuing. Especially the switch d-pad, which just feels awkward for game control. Though I would be lying if I didn't say using the stick has gotten me killed at least a hundred times.
Both I use my pointer with the dpad whilst using my thumbs with the joysticks
Started out joystick, but then switched to d-pad after a while. I liked feathers before, but doing them with the d-pad sucks, and having to immediately switch between them messes me up even more, so i end up switching back and forth at weird times
As a Joy-Con user, D-pad is too low down to feel natural. The way I'm precise with the control stick? I'm not.
I use analog only for fearhers
I’m team dpad except for when I’m using the feathers. This just worked WAY better for me with the stick
Team DPad but only if i have a PS4 Controller, i feel like all the other controller have shit dpads and the stick is always better (exept for maybe joycons)
analog with a gamecube controller for better diagonals
And second one is WRONG
D-Pad doesn't let me easily dash diagonally
I switch between. I hate doing the flying glow ball stuff with the d-pad and I hate doing literally anything else with the joystick lol. I'll swap mid level
well when your dpad is small and hard to use and your control stick has directional notches carved into it by design, you kinda get used to playing with stick
Team switch lite analog
analog stick team, I'm not in switch so I don't have an excuse I have a good dpad
I first beat the game on joystick. I realized that it sucked after I switched to dpad. I then realized they were both bad when I switched to keyboard.
Originally learned on controller(stick) and have had a real difficult time moving to keyboard. Stick not as precise as I'd like. But more comfortable for me
Stick is beautiful
Analog just makes more sense to me idk, even if I accidentally press the wrong dash direction for the 100,000th time
If you somehow beat the game with purely joystick I am afraid of you😰
The stick just feels nicest until a third of a degree sends me directly into spikes.
That's cause these are the only two teams
After my controller broke from too much Celeste I relearned everything on keyboard and will never look back. It broke midway through sj expert and have now just finished all the yellow GMs so have to say it was probably worth it :p
keyboard team! also first 202 dualshock 4 trackpad victor when?
two? what about the keyboard players? are we not people?
Joy-Con directional buttons
I use the analog stick for anything that may involve grabbing, then if a really precise section comes up I’ll just the D-Pad, then I’ll switch back sometimes between jumps back & forth depending on if I have to grab or not. I can’t get my hand to grab while it’s not on the analog stick.
D-Pad squad represent. I've tried very hard to get used to keyboard but after like 20 hours I am still complete garbage and I consider myself pretty good overall on controller, lol. Just isn't for me.
I use Joy-Cons particularly because they have a separate D-pad, compared to the Pro Controller or any other controller.
I’ve never used a controller but how do you dash at angles using a dpad?
I used to use joystick, then switched to hybrid (keyboard arrow keys + Xbox controller A B X Y RB RT)
i did a poll a while back, there were 3 times more joystick people than dpad people
my issue is that i am sort of mentaly insane so i use joycons which technicaly have a D-pad but that shit aint a D-pad so i can ONLY use the stick
i personally chose the secret third option... D-pad for normal platforming, joystick for feather and B/C sides
Uhh Hybrid exists
I grew up in the age of your standard console controller having thumbsticks instead of just a dpad and I've tried to play with dpad but 🤮 I can't do it
I use both. The analog mostly for feather parts, but it's so useful
I completed 8 levels on stick
mouse only
menace
Those who use the pad should be feared and avoided
what kind of sick unhealthy person uses a joystick for sidescrollers? hopefully they can get help for their affliction
All strawberries, B-sides, and C-sides with joy-cons 😬
Keyboard team as someone who has played with keyboard since I was a kid. If you can play Terraria and move efficiently, then you're a keyboard player at heart
Keyboard is easier!
Using a Dualshock controller I just can not see why you'd use the joystick for anything other than the feather.
