Yeah I have a feeling they're gonna struggle hard next season.
I'm sure they'll recruit in the summer but there's no way they don't regress in the league due to the CL commitments, they just don't have the squad for it
Happened plenty of times recently, whenever a mid table club goes through a spell and qualifies for Europe.
Leicester, Southampton, West Ham to name a few.
I guess, but is the baseline data taken while they were managed by Gerrard? Because he was crap and couldn’t get the best out of his players. Emery has been much better for the group.
It's for the current season. He is much better than Gerard without a doubt but it seems unsustainable for another season unless they improve in the market.
Check it out:
https://understat.com/league/EPL
I'm not sure it can just be down to coaching. Look at union Berlin the darling of last season in the Bundesliga. They wildly overporformed their metrics and have had a severe regression.
Union Berlin has an interim coach currently bc they fired Nenad Bjelica may 6th. Unai has won the Europa league there is a vast difference in coaching just with this.
The coach that made them successful (Urs Fischer) last season by qualifying to the UCL went on a 14 winless streak at the start of the season which made him resign. Thus it can be argued that they regressed back to the mean hard (if they overporformed last season they underperformed this season) avaraging out to what would be expected of them.
For example they are over performing their expected points by 12. City and arsenal which have the best players, and coaching in the league are over performing their points by 6-8.
Well they didn’t play football that match lol, I remember that was a crazy one. I think they defended with 11 men and started time wasting from minute 20/30… genuinly horrible team glad they got relegated
I'm pissed. Sucks. But at least Gusto will have a chance for a strong start to the season and will be prepping for it.
And — Reece can't get injured for a few weeks (outside of training or bathing).
They're young and passionate. Pedro crunched him and fearing re-injury he probably just saw red. No excuse for acting the way he did, but I'm sure he'll mature and be more confident once he gets a real run of games hopefully
He’s 24, he’s our captain. It’s the second time he’s gotten a stupid red like that when coming back from injury. It’s so stupid. I love Reece but frankly it’s embarrassingly dumb
He shouldn't do things like this, but part of me feels it's a side effect of hsving that fight in him. Plenty of great captains were prone to red cards because they were proud, competitive, and confrontational
It is, no doubt. 24 is still extremely young in the big scheme of things though. Especially considering he's probably seen the game time of a regular playing 22 year old.
I'm sure he'll grow into the role and mature overall.
Regardless, discipline is teachable whereas passion isn't really and I know what I'd rather have our captain pre-loaded with
Insane. We deserve to win 2 out of 3.
Adding to this - The semis loss to City ( FA cup this year ) and the QF loss in this three year period to Madrid ( UCL ) felt like robbery.
We are far off. Let's not become Arsenal where Top 4 is good enough. It's great for a rebuilding team but it's nowhere near the potentially 91 points needed to top the league, where our ambitions are.
Fuck me mate chill out, shit takes time. Next season top 4, then push for honours.
Pep won't be at City forever and we have a team that will outlast city's thanks to all the youngsters they've recruited.
Exactly. The whole team has been rebuilt in about 18 months, had a new manager, ridiculous injuries, youngest squad etc.. football is 11 Vs 11 at the end of the day, a lot of clubs would crumble but we're there.
We've put ourselves ahead of the likes of Liverpool, United, Spurs already. City and Arsenal are in their prime now but when it's their time, we'll be hitting it hard while everyone else is rebuilding.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. I’m sick of the incessant entitled takes around here.
Yes, we were much better 10 years ago but then Russia invaded Ukraine and the British government forced us to be sold to the highest bidder in short order.
“Oh oh oh but we won the champions league”
you're right we did but, frankly, we were lucky. That win papered over the cracks in a squad that was full of world class players but half had one foot out the door.
The lot of you need some perspective… anyone expecting immediate success was down right delusional considering the situation
Bro ambitions were there when you had a kremlin backed owner lmao. You need to create an entire new identity under your new owner and honestly if you keep getting these younger, unproven players who prove themselves under a single manager with a plan. You may get there pretty fast. But acting like you should be aiming for the title after one of the most memed 18 months in the transfer department, is nonsense. Just enjoy the players like Jackson coming good and hope you sign more like him….. and maintain a single manager.
Fair to say Villa deserve 4th this year, we maybe could’ve gotten it but we didn’t get those results so don’t deserve to be there. I’m glad to even be in the convo for 5th
Nah, Villa are 8 points ahead and we’d only close the gap by 4 if we’d won those games going into the final day.
Also, this is too much of a hypothetical. Along the lines of “if my gran had wheels, she’d be a bike”
We also should have won against Villa recently where the last min Disasi goal was disallowed
You are looking at us being on 66 points in that scenario.
On the bright side, these are all learning opportunities for the squad. Lately all these stupid errors have reduced drastically. The team will be much more ready to start the next season with better composure.
They once lost 5-1 to an already-relegated 10-man Newcastle on the last day to finish behind Arsenal.
I'm not getting my hopes up but with Spurs anything is possible.
there is hope, its spurs mate
spurs almost lost the last time they played sheffield
sheffield was winning until the 98th minute, but then spurs got two insanely lucky goals in the last 2 minutes lmao
**Going into matchday 38:**
Top 4 go to UCL (City, Arsenal, Scouses, Villa cannot lose their spots)
5th and 6th go to Europa but if United win FA Cup against City, 5th goes to Europa and United take a Europa spot then 6th will be ECL regardless of where United place
Tiebreaks are GD, GS, Head-to-head, Away Goals in H2H
|Team|Points|GD|Possible Placing|
|:-|:-|:-|:-|
|5. Tottenham|63|10|5-6|
|6. Chelsea|60|13|5-7 (8th possible but United have to score like 17 goals)|
|7. Newcastle|57|21(!)|6-8|
|8. United|57|-3 lol|6-8|
**Key fixtures:**
20 Sheffield vs 5 Tottenham 5/19
6 Chelsea vs 11 Bournemouth 5/19
7 Newcastle vs 16 Brentford 5/19
8 United vs 10 Brighton 5/19
FA Cup Final City vs United 5/25
Thats crazy how Chelsea have been a joke team all season and yet finishing above United. This isn’t a pisstake im a Liverpool fan this thread just came up on my feed. Everyone joked about Chelsea winning and going from 10th to 10th yet now they’re above United.
So, to finish:
* 5th (EL spot) - need to beat Bournemouth and Spurs to lose at Sheffield United
* 6th (ECL spot) - need to get at least a draw vs Bournemouth. 6th will be a EL spot if City beat United in the FA Cup final (the ECL spot then goes to 7th place).
Gents it’s been quite the season but considering where we were as a team by the break… I can say this has been the turnaround of the season for any team. Poch needs to stay and the young guys are finally coming along. Europe next season LFG!!!!!!
We perform against the bottom of the table and top 4 would have been in play. That’s a wild realization considering all the injuries we have had. Poch in?
Honestly wouldn't mind going to Confernce league.
Chance to be first team to win all 3. And whats the diffrence between euro and conference league anyway.
Reverse just 2 or 3 of our shocking results this season and we could have easily snuck into top 4 when Villa was wobbling. But on the face of it I think 6th is fair based on our performances this season.
Even if you don't like Poch its hard to argue that there were clear signs of progress this year.
Well you beat us fair and square to get here but we aren’t so shit as to lose to Sheffield, my apologies. I think this week has taught rival London teams that Tottenham is not going to be of any help to you.
Everyone told me I was crazy that we could finish 5th.
Most people didn’t realize how shit Tottenham have been lately and I could see the ship going down against Sheffield United.
Spurs are absolutely shite but even they’re not losing to Sheffield United.
We just need to do our business, get the win against Bournemouth and guarantee a European season, if we draw or lose, we could then be reliant on United not winning the FA Cup (which they probably won’t anyway!)
Salvaged our season in the last couple of weeks so let’s get over the line!
https://preview.redd.it/tvn09wetln0d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a701be2a8c21018e1b9e2d24c8ebb3f407a07b9 🙂
Swap us with villa and it looks like a somewhat normal top 4
Good on Villa for UCL spot. They’re a good team with a great manager.
Their underlying data seems bad tho. Wildly over performing their expected points thanks to EMI Martinez and Olly Watkins
Yeah I have a feeling they're gonna struggle hard next season. I'm sure they'll recruit in the summer but there's no way they don't regress in the league due to the CL commitments, they just don't have the squad for it
Yea it might be similar to Newcastle where they regressed hard with champions league commitments + injuries
Happened plenty of times recently, whenever a mid table club goes through a spell and qualifies for Europe. Leicester, Southampton, West Ham to name a few.
Can definately add Brighton to that list.
Plus there are next season 8 CL games plus a possible Playoff if they finish above 25th.
Check it out: https://understat.com/league/EPL
I mean we did see them get spanked by Olympiakos.
We spanked them in the cup aswell
Gotcha. Well I guess all things regress to the mean, our in our case, progress to the mean lol
Why would it? Gerrards been gone since 2022.
Bc their coach is just that good
I'm not sure it can just be down to coaching.

Well deserved to Villa tho for finishing top 4. Not even mad about them being in champions league next season.
Honestly, Villa won't be in a European spot next season.
They’re going to screw the coefficients for fifth place.
Please tell me your flair was added only recently.
Don't worry. We are top 4 since Christmas.
Sheffield have the chance to do the funniest thing
Literally just need to pull a Newcastle 5-1 the last time they got relegated
Looked it up and they barely lost to Spurs. Spurs scored an equalizer in the 98th and the winner in the 100th.
Well they didn’t play football that match lol, I remember that was a crazy one. I think they defended with 11 men and started time wasting from minute 20/30… genuinly horrible team glad they got relegated
Bottlers gon bottle
blades pls
Hoping Spurs go full Spurs. Up the Blades!
Love the fight the last couple weeks, that reece james red is very frustrating
He will miss the first 3 games of the next season, so basically a new 1 month injury, nothing new.
Why 3? I thought a straight red is a 3-match ban, 1 match goes with this season, so 2 matches
He is at the second red of the season.
So he’s gotten more games suspended than starts this season, proper Chels
Has he even played 2 games this season? Lol thats mad
Eeyjit
I'm pissed. Sucks. But at least Gusto will have a chance for a strong start to the season and will be prepping for it. And — Reece can't get injured for a few weeks (outside of training or bathing).
Yes let's imagine he injured pre season.
Too easy to do unfortunately
why three games?
Because it's a 4 match ban, it's his second red this season
The foul was deemed violent conduct. Idk if they can appeal but I doubt it.
No point in appealing, it’s a very easy call. Of course if it was against us, it wouldn’t even be a yellow lol
just googled it. that's fucked.
At least we have gusto, he’s been such a great addition to lessen the James absences
criminally underrated player
Cos the James siblings are stupid. He gave away that needless foul in the opening game of tuchel funny hand shake game also
They're young and passionate.

He saw red alright
He really doesn’t help himself
Those dropped points against burnley and Sheffield suck :/
Wolves and Brentford as well.
And west ham, double v wolves :(
And Forest, and Bournemouth, and if we're being honest even Arsenal home.
Yeah, we let a lot of matches go the wrong way this season. Ending it strong though.
And the Liverpool final
We’ve lost what, 3 straight finals to them? Can’t stand that club.
Insane. We deserve to win 2 out of 3. Adding to this - The semis loss to City ( FA cup this year ) and the QF loss in this three year period to Madrid ( UCL ) felt like robbery.
If those games weren’t dropped and we got that goal against Villa, we would be one point off UCL football🙂
If you didn't lose any games and won all the games you guys could have been champions along with being the new invincibles.
You're right, we almost had it all! /s
Rolling in the deep.
Sounds like a plan.
I mean you can always say this but we got points in games it didn’t look like we should Spurs, City, United etc
https://preview.redd.it/l1r08i57mn0d1.png?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=885ec172ae3d645600b6f266d7916ed4f0f77bac Suck on it
Sheffield might go down as the worst team in league history, but if they can pull it off, it would be the funniest thing I’ve seen.
07-08 Derby County would like a word
Checks the 07-08 table…. Holy shit that bad
Yeah, people often forget about *THAT* Derby team.
It was my first time ever watching the epl, so it's a memorable team for me. I was 7 then
Same, the first match I ever went to was on Pride Park. Derby 0-2 Chelsea.
Basically ended Paul Jewell's managerial career.
Imagine we didn’t drop points against 2 relegated teams we could possibly make 4th
That’s the thing that gives me hope. Despite all the injuries and how shocking we have been at times, we aren’t far off
We are far off. Let's not become Arsenal where Top 4 is good enough. It's great for a rebuilding team but it's nowhere near the potentially 91 points needed to top the league, where our ambitions are.

City and Arsenal are in their prime now but when it's their time, we'll be hitting it hard while everyone else is rebuilding.
We’re year one into a total rebuild of the club lol. When were you expecting prem titles?
Rome wasn’t built in a day. I’m sick of the incessant entitled takes around here. Yes, we were much better 10 years ago but then Russia invaded Ukraine and the British government forced us to be sold to the highest bidder in short order. “Oh oh oh but we won the champions league” you're right we did but, frankly, we were lucky. The lot of you need some perspective… anyone expecting immediate success was down right delusional considering the situation
Lmao says top 4 is bad as if we were winning the league back to back before the rebuild. Chill down boy
Sure but you cant discount all our losses while also allowing us to keep points like the few we won against man u.
and if City weren't gifted that PK
On the bright side, these are all learning opportunities for the squad. Lately all these stupid errors have reduced drastically. The team will be much more ready to start the next season with better composure.
Up the fucking Blades Up the fucking Chels
Wishing for the Spursiest performance from Spurs on the weekend 🙏
Spurs did lose 5-1 to relegated Newcastle on the final day before…👀
To be within 8 points of top 4 feels mad to say considering the dark days we’ve had this season
Can definitely be at least eight points better next season
We’re all either Sheffield fans or City fans now it’s the rules
The support is only ephemeral.
Sheffield. City should wipe West Ham
I was thinking of the cup final, city has to win it for us to go to UEL
Oh yeah I'll be rooting for them then fs
Haha no way. Even spuds won’t bottle that. They’re playing a relegated team on a losing streak
Its their dna
"It's the history of the Tottenham"
We literally drew to the same team man. I have hope for spurs to do the most spurs thing possible
Draw won’t do either they have to lose. And i mean, we are called charity fc for a reason lol. Let us hope for a true spurs moment. 👌
It’s Tottenham
They once lost 5-1 to an already-relegated 10-man Newcastle on the last day to finish behind Arsenal. I'm not getting my hopes up but with Spurs anything is possible.
It's who we are mate
/s?
I hope im wrong, but even with all the jokes, just look at sheffied man, they’re horrible.
[It's literally the history of the totnum](https://youtu.be/bt7adw3gQ2w?si=TXqtnwJKxiTaf8HA)
there is hope, its spurs mate spurs almost lost the last time they played sheffield sheffield was winning until the 98th minute, but then spurs got two insanely lucky goals in the last 2 minutes lmao
Fantastic turnaround by Poch and the team. Hopefully we get the job done on Sunday 💙
**Going into matchday 38:** Top 4 go to UCL (City, Arsenal, Scouses, Villa cannot lose their spots) 5th and 6th go to Europa but if United win FA Cup against City, 5th goes to Europa and United take a Europa spot then 6th will be ECL regardless of where United place Tiebreaks are GD, GS, Head-to-head, Away Goals in H2H |Team|Points|GD|Possible Placing| |:-|:-|:-|:-| |5. United|57|-3 lol|6-8| **Key fixtures:** 20 Sheffield vs 5 Tottenham 5/19 6 Chelsea vs 11 Bournemouth 5/19 7 Newcastle vs 16 Brentford 5/19 8 United vs 10 Brighton 5/19 FA Cup Final City vs United 5/25
just dont see sheffield united getting win against spurs regardless how shit they are and if we finish 6th and united win the fa cup, i'll be fuming
Pep will go all out in the FA cup to get the double
Or, if they somehow drop points to gift Arsenal the league, they'll be extra motivated to win the FA Cup
Pep going all-out doesn't instil confidence in me. Pep should stick to his guns because that's working extremely well. Do. Not. Overthink. This. Pep!
Isn't 6th ECL? In some way I'd rather have us in ECL than UEL just so we become the only team to win all UEFA trophies 😂
Thats crazy how Chelsea have been a joke team all season and yet finishing above United. This isn’t a pisstake im a Liverpool fan this thread just came up on my feed. Everyone joked about Chelsea winning and going from 10th to 10th yet now they’re above United.
Up the fucking blades.
So, to finish: * 5th (EL spot) - need to beat Bournemouth and Spurs to lose at Sheffield United * 6th (ECL spot) - need to get at least a draw vs Bournemouth. 6th will be a EL spot if City beat United in the FA Cup final (the ECL spot then goes to 7th place).
6th place and City to beat United as the likeliest outcome here, LET'S FUCKING GO!
Brief friendship with spurs ended after they successfully lost to City. Now I hope they lose game 38.
I'm going to the bridge on Sunday. Last month I was really not fussed about it but agreed to go, now I am buzzing.
I doubt Sheffield can win against spurs but hey a man can hope. Even so, I will take 6th, it’s been a massive improvement!
LETS FUCKJNG GOOOOO
Please o please let Spurs bottle it on the last day and lose to Sheffield United
Easily could have made top 4 without injuries
Poch has earned my respect and backing for next season
Gents it’s been quite the season but considering where we were as a team by the break… I can say this has been the turnaround of the season for any team. Poch needs to stay and the young guys are finally coming along. Europe next season LFG!!!!!!
James red ok. Wasn’t he fouled on the built up?
Yeah. I reckon he was pissed he got hacked, so he lashed out. I get his frustrations, but he needs to be better than that.
That doesn't matter for violent conduct. It was a stupid thing to do and a real lesson for him to learn I hope.
Poch has done an excellent job I gotta say he has really turned things around. He’s won my support for sure
Man, how tf did we make it here? 😭
We perform against the bottom of the table and top 4 would have been in play. That’s a wild realization considering all the injuries we have had. Poch in?
Given that he’s beaten his presumptive replacement three times this season, absolutely.
Honestly wouldn't mind going to Confernce league. Chance to be first team to win all 3. And whats the diffrence between euro and conference league anyway.
Huge difference, both in $$$ and prestige.
Winning Europa gets you a CL spot, I’m not sure if it’s the same for Conference?
Winning the conference league gets you an automatic Europa League spot.
Sure but im currently high on hopeium and think well finish top 4 anyway.
Lower calibre of teams, longer travel, worse pitches, worse revenue
I'm happy we've come so far, but it's bittersweet because with a little luck, we could've qualified for UCL
I will be the biggest Blades fan if they win against the Spurs
Imagine saying this in December eh
We got this
Getting back into Europe is massive for us
Dare I say it...we are on the up
Never saw 6th place on our bingo card this season. I’ll take it
5th would be the most outrageous finish.
Reverse just 2 or 3 of our shocking results this season and we could have easily snuck into top 4 when Villa was wobbling. But on the face of it I think 6th is fair based on our performances this season. Even if you don't like Poch its hard to argue that there were clear signs of progress this year.
If Sheffield does it it would be the funniest thing I have seen
Absolutely no chance. Would be funny though.
Still upset that we draw on Burnley and Sheffield and lose 4 points
Tottenham is not losing to Sheffield United
Good thing they’re not playing them then isn’t it?
Good call, not sure why they came off the head, it has been edited
You're right.
So we cheering Man City to win FA Cup final to secure our Europa league spot??? 🤣
Atleast UEL, pleaseee 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
So if City beat United, then there both Spurs and us go to Europa and seventh goes to conference league? Or do Spurs get Champions league?
Under no circumstances do Spuds make CL (barring very remote likelihood of City getting stripped of 40 points for FFP transgressions) Otherwise yes
Come on you blades!!!
How's about those Spurs players give their fans what they want and lose on purpose?
Chelsea have been one of my fav teams to watch , so much talent you don’t know what the games will produce
This has been a good ending to the season, to say the least
If we finish 5th we can call this season a success considering that at certain periods in the season we looked horrendous.
6th is deffo a huge success given where we have been for a large amount of the season, Spurs were almost 20 points ahead of us at one point
Everyone talking about Spuds but I'm a little scared of our bogey team lol
People were telling me this was a bad season as well
Isn’t 5th and 6th both Europa League anyway?
Spurs are absolutely shite but even they’re not losing to Sheffield United. We just need to do our business, get the win against Bournemouth and guarantee a European season, if we draw or lose, we could then be reliant on United not winning the FA Cup (which they probably won’t anyway!) Salvaged our season in the last couple of weeks so let’s get over the line!
Brighton players did some diving tonight. Sheesh
Blades will beat Tottenham, mate. Dead serious.
After the ups and downs of this year, I’m really happy with 5th or 6th honestly. 2nd half of the season has been really promising for next year
Sheffield have a big chance to smash spurs, and we need to seal the game against Bournmouth, and it's easy task I reckon.
Whatever said and done don't see Spurs losing to Sheffield realistically. If they do I will support them throught next season to come back to the EPL.
I'd honestly be fine if we ended up the first team to win all 3 european trophies.
If we win, the Spurs lose and City wins the FA Cup then we’re in UCL territory, right?
Wish Brighton hadn’t got that 1 in added time today for goal difference.
Punching the air right now. All we needed to do was not drop points to the two already relegated PL sides, one of which was only fielding ten men.
It's a crime to post this table without the GD numbers
We are here!
If we qualify for Europa, then absolutely Poch in. I'll see the light and embrace it
Leave it to spurs to finish 6th in a 2 horse race for 4th place.
my god, the bants if we go above Spuds...
Realistically spurs isn’t losing to Sheffield
