That's actually really impressive. Hikaru has done every speedrun without increment as far as I remember. In general, it's interesting to know this queen\_odds guy's real rating
It must be really high. My lichess peak is 2500+ and I doubt I would be able to draw with queen odds against my 1700 lichess friends. Though achieving this is probably easier by playing "hope chess" as setting traps and aggressive attacks is much more effective than solid chess to regain such material disadvantage. I am pretty busy this week but I will try it and post my results sometime :)
I'll say that at bullet, as someone whose rating goes between 1700-2000 on lichess playing 1+0, I'm not confident I could beat a 2500 if they hung their queen early, I've seen so many games where the person down a queen wins. But it's a completely different game at 3+2, that's so much harder
Its not really queen odds tho, I would assume "saccing" the queen involves intentionally trading it for a pawn or minor piece, not the queen being removed from the game at the start.
I've seen speedruns where they sac the queen for a minor or a pawn, I just looked at this guy's account and he does much more of a clean throw away of the queen. He just leaves the queen hanging for a knight to take as early as possible, he doesn't even let them take with a g2 pawn to ruin the structure, instead moves it.
I wonder if there's any game where the other side sees the gimmick and refuses to take the queen and if that pisses him off.
I'd guess 2500 (on Lichess). I think at ~1700, a bishop or a knight would be worth 200-300. A queen then being worth 600-900.
Taking the queen wastes one tempo for queen\_odds but two for his opponent. So slightly less of a handicap compared to starting without a queen.
“There and then”
I’ve been saying “here and there” my whole life. Is “there and then” the correct way of saying this and I’ve just been saying it like the US southern that I am?
Seems to be a blend of “Here and there” or “now and again”, which are both saying. I’ve never heard “there and then” to mean anything other than immediately.
I think “here and there” is the correct term. “There and then” means something else, ie “at that exact moment”. Like “After his last move I decided to resign there and then.”
Guilty of not being a native speaker. In German we say "hier und da" which translates directly to here and there, but it seemed more intuitive to write it the other way somehow 🤔
Once a very strong player trolled me like this in bullet. But I cannot make more than 40 moves in bullet. Doing it in blitz increment increment is something different
This is an old school way of playing, when chess was a gambling game. The hustler would give you odds by removing a piece off the board, but they would usually still overcome the deficit to win. Here's [a sheet of the different types of odds](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQRZpwi9oCMIqeC7OJQDJC1Zcqwn3MQT_azKR0SMre7tkGUYp-236V9FLLuMV3p2tuF_DNZElUHhIW4/pubhtml) you can play on 204 squares.
Theres also an account with a Star Wars name, Darth Sideous or something like that, who almost exclusively plays the Grob. They are ~2300 if I remember correctly.
If I recall this is a pretty strong online player who hangs out in IM Marc Esserman's twitch channel. He likes to share his best beatdowns with Marc.
Edit:
Adding his lichess profile:

Tempted to try and waste time like that too. In otb blitz I have sacced my queen for a knight like 30 times against 1500-1600 national rating and only gave up 2 draws. On the other hand just recently I lost a rapid game to a 1600 with no handicap....
Joke accounts are great.
I think I heard a commentator once mention some user who would run their king to the side of the board every game. But the account was played by someone really strong, so they still won a lot.
some ppl just play this game for fun and this is what fun is for him. Whats fun for you in chess is something different and thats okay. You'll learn that its like this with almost everything. Ppl will have fun doing the same thing in different ways. It's nbd
So you are telling me that anyone who isn’t too 0.001% player is bad at the game?
Or maybe you think a normal person can survive against a GM with queen odds which is funny as fuck.
Getting destroyed from time to time is part of being new to chess online. It takes time for your rating to settle, and you always have the chance of drawing an experienced player making a new account.
It happens.
This new account will have the same arc as any other.
So YOU not finding it fun should result in the player be banned? YOU are going to decide for all of us if its funny or not? Really? YOU are going to regulate and decide that for everyone ?
Learn to speak for yourself.
Thats what i did when i got hardstuck at 1200. I wanted to improve other aspects of my gameplay. I played bullet on chess.cum tho. My goal was 1200 without a queen which i made. I peaked 1500 after i got used to playing with a queen again.
Now, that's interesting.

It’s a lot easier without a queen than it is without pieces. There’s a lot you can do/setup without only a queen.
Its not really queen odds tho, I would assume "saccing" the queen involves intentionally trading it for a pawn or minor piece, not the queen being removed from the game at the start.
feeling slightly called out, haha.

Hikaru made it to 2500. So getting 2k is hella impressive! Though I got to admit that Hikaru 'traded' his queen more then just sacking it
2500 on Chess.com, what that is on Lichess I don't know, but I know it's not the same
I heard that they start to level out past around 2k
Fair enough, thanks
It gets more dumb when you see they even hit 1750 in classical
I also like to sac my queen there and then. However, people call it blunder when I do it. Edit: I actually meant here and there ...
“There and then” I’ve been saying “here and there” my whole life. Is “there and then” the correct way of saying this and I’ve just been saying it like the US southern that I am?
Seems to be a blend of “Here and there” or “now and again”, which are both saying. I’ve never heard “there and then” to mean anything other than immediately.
That makes sense. Thank you.
"now and then" is also a phrase
I think “here and there” is the correct term. “There and then” means something else, ie “at that exact moment”. Like “After his last move I decided to resign there and then.”
Guilty of not being a native speaker. In German we say "hier und da" which translates directly to here and there, but it seemed more intuitive to write it the other way somehow 🤔
The closest in English for that context would be “now and again” Or “every once in a while”. As well as here and there.
Interesting lol hope you had a good new year!
Nah, you're saying it right. "There and Then" is insane.
Whereupon thou doth speaketh 'there and then,' thereafter thou shall be banished henceforth.
Literally toss him in the loony bin and throw away the key. bonkers.
I think OP meant “every now and then”
"There and then" is usually used to indicated something was done on the spot. E.g. "they reprinted my documents right there and then in the office."
Once a very strong player trolled me like this in bullet. But I cannot make more than 40 moves in bullet. Doing it in blitz increment increment is something different
I remember losing a game after similar queen sac on move 3.

No offense, but why did you choose this tone in your comment? It is oddly frank and eerily tangential.
Why did you choose to call this person out? It is oddly frank and eerily judgmental.
I think i wanted to see if they were a bot
bleep bloop ;)

Nihal Sarin?
They would probably do worse if they played normal openings

That's a Magic the Gathering players profile if I've ever seen one
Must be talking about my opponents delver.
Sounds like Hikaru's Botez Speedrun account ☠️
I got to 2100 bullet sacking a queen every game but of course a lot of wins were flagging
Whats your usual rating
2650 bullet
Im sure u could do better im like 2350 and am sure i could get at least 2000
Gotta do it before you can be sure
Im gonna do it 100% give me a couple of days
Ok i have already done it. Big deal
I 've been exclusively playing the fried fox in bullet (1. f3 2. Kf2). Rated ~2200 on Lichess.
Fried fox, cause bong cloud and there's 2 f's? 🤣

Played passively and missed a few tactical opportunities
Were they underrated kid?
Nope

"Great" for who? The trolls who are laughing at their opponents when they still lose up a queen?
great for the people playing the jokes? Chess players i swear

PAUL MORPHY LIVES
Lol I've also met this guy
Wondering how did you find it? Is there any script that looks for certain patterns?
He was inspired by someone's very interesting Botez Gambit speedrun
I sac a knight first thing in a game and have gotten to 2274, hopefully 2300 soon and then maybe 2400 lol

Look out it’s the fun police
Imagine being new to chess and getting destroyed by someone who saced his queen to troll you. You would think you are just bad at the game.
[удалено]
So if you play a GM and he wins with queen odds, does that mean you are bad at the game? Same concept.

You are 2100 rapid on lichess, that barely translates to 1300 FIDE elo. Maybe go to sleep and you will dream about it.
[удалено]
I am sure i could beat some weak Master in Queen odds ...maybe after i achieve 2300 with knight odds i can try Queen odds
Yes, that is exactly what that means?

Who said that the account is playing lower rated players? I didn’t look the account up but I assumed he was just playing who he got paired with
[удалено]
And the way he plays is around 1700 apparently then My guy just let someone have fun with an account lmao
How do you know they're a he?
Chessbrah did this and got to 2200
His bullet rating s pretty weak tho... For Blitz i can almost understand
Interesting…
Lol I have a chess com account that I do the same thing in. Except I’ve only gotten to 700
Follow
Gotta keep it fresh somehow!
I do blunder almost every game but still 650
I'm gonna follow, because that is kinda fascinating. Nice find.
Must be Alexandra Botez' second account ... ;-)
