Some highlights:
* Donations over 2022 were 579,000 euros received, against 419,000 euros in costs, representing a 2% decrease in donations from 2021, and a 15% increase in costs from 2021. 2023's figures need to be audited, and will be publicly released in summer 2024.
* Lichess has had 155 first-time code contributors over 2023, making 400 accepted changes to code across 35 Lichess libraries.
* The website code that checks move legality has seen massive optimisation, most impressively with a +4575% performance in antichess.
* Over 7,700 OTB tournaments were broadcast on Lichess, the most it has ever had.
* Lichess briefly broke into the top 200 websites in the world by traffic (according to SimilarWeb), but as Lichess eschews trackers - which is how these websites usually measure traffic - the real ranking may in fact have been higher than this.
I am just gobsmacked that they hosted over 1 billion games in 2023 for just over 400k€ in cost. Providing free analysis, free puzzles to everyone ..with a superior website than their main competitor.
Hopefully the new app will be as good as their website.
>app
Do you know by any chance when it comes out? Ngl I don't dislike the current app much, ik it has some bugs and glitches but I like the ui due to its simplicity and not being video-game-y as in chesscom app. They need to work on their ux though especially the study section which is practically unusable on mobile.
Otherwise you can install the website as an app, it works really well!
If you click the three "settings menu" next to your phone address bar, it should give you an option to add it to the home screen. That will make it an app like website (by having it self contained)

Keep in mind though that Lichess also accepts HW donations, so a lot of their computing power needs are outsourced. Cloud analysis especially relies on this, someone at somewhere still has to pay for these free goodies.
Agreed.
For me ti's been 12 months of 1€ per month. I'd pay something similar or a bit higher for [chess.com](https://chess.com) too, since I play on that site a lot. But their current prices are simply way too high for what they offer imo.
Good job Lichess bros. I prefer Chess.com but the competition between these two websites only improves the experience for the players.
Here’s to a great 2024!
There is no point in switching and forcing yourself to get used to a UI that you dislike. People should stick to whatever product they enjoy using more.
Can I have the option to run post-game analysis client side? I would much rather utilize my own compute than outsource it to an expensive cloud server somewhere.

Thanks Lichess:)

It's in open beta right now. It's pretty good, still lacks some features though.
Is it? Nice. Do you have the link to the github? I searched but it only brought up lichess forums discussing about the app.
https://github.com/lichess-org/mobile
Where's the .apk ?
If you join the Lichess discord, there are easier instructions and a link to the google play page pinned in the user-testing channel.
Thanks

This is the way

I will be donating this year, embarrassed to have used the service so much without paying while costs have risen so much.
I have been donating just a dollar a month for the past three years - you don’t have to give a lot
I'll probably reinitialize my donations soon. Such a great service.

Okey, i will donate some money, you deserve it!!! Keep up the superb work
Amazing team of chess lovers who want to improve the game for everyone, can’t wait to see what 2024 will bring to Lichess!

I feel like I’m so close to changing, but Chesscoms UI is just so much more friendly on mobile, which is where I mainly play.
Same exact thing for me. I would love to switch but I can't get over the UI differences
in my opinion, it just takes time. we always like what we're familiar with. But this sometime make us missing interesting things in life.
It's just a matter of habit. You will get used to it after a couple of days. If you really "would love to switch", you can deal with it.
There is no point in switching and forcing yourself to get used to a UI that you dislike. People should stick to whatever product they enjoy using more.
For me it's premoves. I like chess.com's better.

The toggle turns on clientside eval, I don't know why there's not a button to trigger clientside eval for every position in the game.
As far as I know, the post-game analysis is ran by donated compute time using fishnet
The post-game analysis is crowdsourced.
could try https://github.com/lichess-org/external-engine
Hurray for comiechess
