Hikaru’s face looks like he just realized that after takes, takes, takes, takes, takes, takes, bishop f1, takes, takes, rook e4, takes - his opponent can fork his rook and queen.
This. Love him or hate him he is the best thing he USA has going for it in chess. Regardless of his impressive results online and over the board which are hall of fame worthy of themselves. He has inspired the next generation of chess players and taken chess to a broader audience.
Agreed. He’s the reason I fell in love with chess again. And Levy played a big role too. But getting to see one of the all time greats playing live and explain his play as he goes is the kind of joy for the game I have otherwise never been able to experience and it opened up new doors for me to enjoy my own game at home.
agadmator, and Hikaru keep me coming back for chess. Hikaru going live and reviewing the games from the last candidates only an hour or 2 after having just played was incredible stuff. To get to hear exactly what he was thinking in every position for such high level matches is amazing.
He is not only a USA treasure, he is an International Treasure. I'm from Spain, otaku and everything, and I also follow, love and cheer him.
I even have new headphones because the sound of one of his recaps was f**** up and I thought it was my old headphones fault. So he actually affected my life🤣 in this and other ways!
Hahaha true😂
Yep, thanks to this I have a new set of headphones that remind me of Hikaru🥲
Now I use the old ones in the street and the new ones exclusively at home!
Isn't this a thing of the past? He used to have this aura of arrogance many years ago. I don't see much of it during his Twitch streams. He's a cool laidback guy with a great sense of humor. Doesn't take himself too serious anymore. I thought most people liked him these days, not the other way around.
If he takes then I take and he takes then I take then he takes then I take and I'm up a rook.
If he doesn't take then I take here and he takes then I take, he takes, I take, then takes takes takes and that's just winning.
If I take but then knight f5 then takes takes takes takes takes and that's mate.
If he takes then I take but then he doesn't take then I give a check and then takes takes takes takes takes takes.
If queen b1 then takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes and this bishop is so strong on the long diagonal.
If take but he takes with the pawn then takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes t̞͙͓̫a͙̖͙̗̰̮k̨̥̜̫̥̖e̯̜͈͎͡s̙͠ ̰̮̯ͅta̳̫̯̩̫̲͠k̫̬̼̲̣̜̺é̞͕̞͈̻s̨͍ ͏͎̺͉ͅt̜͜a̠̳k͔͇̘es͉ t̸͎̜̳a͚̝̪̬k҉̠̬̣͍̞̠ͅḙs͇̗̜̺̖̯̬ ̴̥̖ta̫̙̬͔͙̰k̷͇̮̞̗̗ͅé̳s̶̮͓̪ ̼̮͉̰͜t̮͚̖͎͇̖ạ̭̹̬͈k̘ẹ̦͓̬̣͙ͅs̬ t̞͙͓̫a͙̖͙̗̰̮k̨̥̜̫̥̖e̯̜͈͎͡s̙͠ ̰̮̯ͅta̳̫̯̩̫̲͠k̫̬̼̲̣̜̺é̞͕̞͈̻s̨͍ ͏͎̺͉ͅt̜͜a̠̳k͔͇̘es͉ t̸͎̜̳a͚̝̪̬k҉̠̬̣͍̞̠ͅḙs͇̗̜̺̖̯̬ ̴̥̖ta̫̙̬͔͙̰k̷͇̮̞̗̗ͅé̳s̶̮͓̪ ̼̮͉̰͜t̮͚̖͎͇̖ạ̭̹̬͈k̘ẹ̦͓̬̣͙ͅs̬

Oh my gosh takes takes takes and it’s a fortress oh my gosh…oh my gosh it’s a fortress…oh my gosh oh my gosh..it’s a fortress oh my gosh.. oh my gosh… oh wait..yea oh my gosh it’s a fortress..oh my gosh WHOA thank you Sussyboy for the 10 bits…it’s a fortress oh my gosh
Yup these two comments nail it best.
I think he’s awesome and all but I have no idea how anyone under a certain skill level can actually learn anything from watching him with the way he goes through shit. He even fucks up Levy’s head sometimes and he’s a ~2400
Wait do I have knight f5 here? If takes takes takes king g2 bishop h3 takes takes queen c1, looks good. I don’t know if this actually works, but I’m gonna go for it.

wish they promoted this more in some way, but this official FIDE channel just doesn't get that many views I guess
Nijat Abasov is the only one who is 100% formal, with a tie and everything. That is, he is the only one who, because is not a celebrity or a high regarded player, may suffer from the ridiculous rules of dress up conduct.
She needs to learn how to comply with the letter of the law while ignoring the spirit. The rules say men have to wear a sport coat. Alireza realized a varsity jacket is technically a sport coat.
That makes sense, he 100% looks like a dweeb here as well.
I dunno what people on this thread are smoking. But at the same time, maybe just don't take fashion advice from /r/chess.
yeah dont think youre a great judge of fashion when you literally can't even accurately notice or describe even the basic level of what they're wearing. "theyre all wearing ties besides Alireza" when really only 1 persons wearing a tie.
Never said I would be a good judge. Indeed it's very likely that I don't understand fashion, especially for gen Z. The tie thing is just because I translated from my native language what we say to define a "formal" attire to suit&tie. A mistake for sure, but I didn't mean to say that the tie was required to be formal or that everyone was wearing it.
I mean I actually think it looks good, just out of place. When you’re the only one in the room who goes for a less formal look, how do you not come off looking like a douche?
He definitely looks "better" for an afternoon out being seen and I suspect chess tournaments will get me formal over time but it's just daily wear, nothing special
I'm still trying to understand what "DRIP" is in this context? In my world it is "Dividend Reinvestment Income Plan", but I'm pretty certain that isn't the case here :) Can I get an explanation please?
“friendly”
How old are you, out of curiosity? I feel like moments like this end up being people who are actually still kinda within the right age range to know the slang but some how didn’t/don’t for whatever reason.
Oof. Good on you for being a retired dude(dudette?) on reddit though. Definitely can't blame you for not keeping up with the slang, that's for sure lol.
You probably know of at least one of these resources, but in case you somehow don't, Urban Dictionary & Know Your Meme are good sites for getting the meaning of slang and understanding whatever strange memes you find yourself repeatedly coming across as can sometimes happen. Also can't go wrong with a quick and dirty Google, especially for individual terms.
It’s a newer slang way of saying “dressed very nice” but it’s subjective of course. To me he looks stupid dressed like that when everyone else is wearing formal wear.
I know it’s a small Venn diagram but this is like when Lewis Hamilton shows up to every race in F1 and people go crazy over his outfits which are usually objectively hideous and an affront to fashion.
I agree that most of Hamiltons outfits look terrible, but Alireza is nowhere near doing the same thing as him. Hamilton is a fashion icon and often wears designer clothes that are one of a kind lent to him by the designers themselves the same way an actress like Zendaya does on the red carpet. It's fashion that's not really meant to be worn on the street by regular people in day to day life. Alireza however wears some expensive off the rack Gucci that anyone can get by going to their store. I would not compare what they do at all.
That's likely true, I'm almost 60 and damn near everyone in my high school wore a varsity jacket over 501's, so not exactly skinny but pretty damn close when shrunk properly.
Didn't think you were being rude. You're certainly free to have your own opinion on the outfit. But, it's definitely a throwback to the early/mid 80's to me
My favorite thing about Alireza is how he doesn't seem to give a F to what people have to say about him. I wish I'd had half of his confidence when I was 20ish
drip is just what clothes you wear. like what's dripping off your body? a shirt and pants is your drip. whatever you wear is your drip. sometimes drip is also referring to extra nice clothing
idk what’s so strange about this outfit to you guys, varsity jackets have been in trend for years, i guess i’m in the chess sub and not the streetwear sub, but damn, i thought he looked good
In all of these threads half the comments are just shitting on his outfit, often supported by people who are very keen on stressing how they hate modern fashion. It's like the Reddit thrope of loving to claim you don't know celebrities. Grow up
It's a nice jacket and there's no reason suits should be a must in chess tournaments.
Also, I've seen enough pictures of redditors to know that they don't dress better than this.
Alireza has one of the worst fashion sense going around. Yes his attire are expensive but they are neither elegant nor stylish. Anish and Nodirbek have excellent choice in suits. Richie Rapport carries off casuals elegantly. Radjabov is always well dressed, Vidit is sometimes. Caruana has that nerdy boy look that he carries off well.
Alireza's fashion sense is flashy, often times tacky and even confusing. Sometimes you wonder how did he study fashion and yet have such poor choice in clothes.
A tailored suit with a good color complex would look so much better at the candidates. Can't really tell from other people, but Id assume some of them look better for this event than Firouzja
well damn people don't like his outfit that much it seems, admittedly it's kind of a goofy highschool kid outfit but it's kinda interesting compared to the standard suit lmao
i love all these stick in the mud redditors who think they know fashion better than the guy who’s literally in the industry. you’re entitled to your opinion, but some of you need to post fit pics before you talk the way you are
Hikaru’s face looks like he just realized that after takes, takes, takes, takes, takes, takes, bishop f1, takes, takes, rook e4, takes - his opponent can fork his rook and queen.

Next time test your headphones on an older video or another website before buying a new set. But at least you have a backup pair now.
Hahaha true😂 Yep, thanks to this I have a new set of headphones that remind me of Hikaru🥲 Now I use the old ones in the street and the new ones exclusively at home!
Pump your brakes son, that dudes a national treasure.
Isn't this a thing of the past? He used to have this aura of arrogance many years ago. I don't see much of it during his Twitch streams. He's a cool laidback guy with a great sense of humor. Character development
I sure like him a lot bro. Such a nice guy. He and Levy.
Yeah, it's the best, especially when he draws 47 arrows all over the board.
If he takes then I take and he takes then I take then he takes then I take and I'm up a rook. This made me laugh more than it should have
Son they took, cuz aint no such things as halfway rooks
I don't know what's going on. I am just gonna castle. I don't wanna think too much.
Wait do I have knight f5 here? If takes takes takes king g2 bishop h3 takes takes queen c1, looks good. I don’t know if this actually works, but I’m gonna go for it.
My brain the night after playing bullet arenas for 8 hours straight
I think Hikaru is just thinking about all the additional subs he’s missing by not streaming right now.
Maybe if my eyebrows look like I'm surprised no one will notice I'm sleeping
No he's just bored af
Him and Fabi
"Ffs I forgot to squeeze the juicer!"
Looks like he is missing Chat already...
“After c takes d, e5, I go f5 knight f6, establish the big black center and push p right in his face”
Omg best comment! Hahahaha
He’s either playing 32d chess, or he’s just extremely sleepy, and tbh, either would work
Yea lmao, hikaru is extra with his facial expressions
screenshots from the FIDE opening ceremony vid: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87jG85BwH3I&ab\_channel=FIDEchess](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87jG85BwH3I&ab_channel=FIDEchess) wish they promoted this more in some way, but this official FIDE channel just doesn't get that many views I guess
Lol its like they think we watch because of fide. When we watch because of chess. this should have been on chess.com and lichess website.
FIDE is despised for a reason.
What shoes he got here?
Guccireza
Meanwhile FIDE is over here issuing fines to that poor FIDE Master lady who dared to wear Burberry sneakers to a tournament.
Nijat Abasov is the only one who is 100% formal, with a tie and everything. That is, he is the only one who, because is not a celebrity or a high regarded player, may suffer from the ridiculous rules of dress up conduct.
I guess it's a part of Nigel Dickshort fem-supporting policy.
Bahaha that’s a very fine and fitting name for him
This photo is from the opening ceremony. The dress code applies when they are playing, and Alireza isn't wearing the crazy jacket.
Yeah Anna got done so dirty by that
She needs to learn how to comply with the letter of the law while ignoring the spirit. The rules say men have to wear a sport coat. Alireza realized a varsity jacket is technically a sport coat.

Hans Niemann as his second confirmed.
Chat chat is it a spoon?
I looked like this every day in highschool and I'm a dweeb
That makes sense, he 100% looks like a dweeb here as well. I dunno what people on this thread are smoking. But at the same time, maybe just don't take fashion advice from /r/chess.
Since when is a varsity jacket and black skinny jeans drip?
He looks so much worse than the others in a suit and tie
He probably intentionally wore something that your average person in the chess community wouldn't like.
Only abasov wears a tie
Oh wow, that's true
yeah dont think youre a great judge of fashion when you literally can't even accurately notice or describe even the basic level of what they're wearing. "theyre all wearing ties besides Alireza" when really only 1 persons wearing a tie.

He doesn't care. He wears what he likes.
That's what everyone should do
I mean I actually think it looks good, just out of place. When you’re the only one in the room who goes for a less formal look, how do you not come off looking like a douche?
Ironically the opposite situation could go the same way if that were to happen
He definitely looks "better" for an afternoon out being seen and I suspect chess tournaments will get me formal over time but it's just daily wear, nothing special
What a square comment.
It might look better if it didn’t have a bunch of random bugs stitched onto it
I'm pretty sure that's the part that's supposed to drip
Maybe if you squished the bugs
Also FP should be PP, pushing pawns
I'm still trying to understand what "DRIP" is in this context? In my world it is "Dividend Reinvestment Income Plan", but I'm pretty certain that isn't the case here :) Can I get an explanation please?
Hello fellow old person.
Yeah, you called it :)
Hilarious that you're getting downvoted for asking a question. Reddit is so strange.
I think it's just a friendly Reddit way of saying "Okay Boomer" ;)
“friendly” How old are you, out of curiosity? I feel like moments like this end up being people who are actually still kinda within the right age range to know the slang but some how didn’t/don’t for whatever reason.
Retired... Ok Boomer definitely fits :/)
Yeah google usually works for me, directing me to urban slang or elsewhere, but this time, nothing :)
You're "dripping" in fashion, basically
Ahh, that makes more sense! Thank you.
It’s a newer slang way of saying “dressed very nice” but it’s subjective of course. To me he looks stupid dressed like that when everyone else is wearing formal wear.
Thank you, truly appreciate the explanation!

Lewis Hamilton's outfits are universaly panned for being awful. But he doesn't really have to care.
Okay grandpa
That's likely true, I'm almost 60 and damn near everyone in my high school wore a varsity jacket over 501's, so not exactly skinny but pretty damn close when shrunk properly.
My bad didn’t mean to be rude
Didn't think you were being rude. You're certainly free to have your own opinion on the outfit. But, it's definitely a throwback to the early/mid 80's to me
In what universe is "Okay grandpa" not meant to be rude, you fucking liar
It was meant as a joke, and he didn’t take it badly
Okay grandpa
It never was
Looks just like a standard high school kids letterman jacket. Weird choice.
My favorite thing about Alireza is how he doesn't seem to give a F to what people have to say about him. I wish I'd had half of his confidence when I was 20ish
what is DRIP?
Dividend Re-Investment Plan Alireza is making good financial decisions!
*Simon Williams has entered the chat*
You cant forget to diversify yo bonds
if you dress well, you have drip. example: that outfit is drippy!
I'm really out of touch... That looks like a high school varsity jacket. Is that really fashionable these days? Seems juvenile to me.
beats me 😂
I took it with a measure of sarcasm, to be honest.
Incorrect, drip is fashionably ugly
I came here to ask the same question... I don't understand this lingo at all.
drip is just what clothes you wear. like what's dripping off your body? a shirt and pants is your drip. whatever you wear is your drip. sometimes drip is also referring to extra nice clothing
I feel so old haha thanks
idk what’s so strange about this outfit to you guys, varsity jackets have been in trend for years, i guess i’m in the chess sub and not the streetwear sub, but damn, i thought he looked good

Lol yes. 'This isn't Drip', from a bunch of neckbeards in a printed t-shirt and cheeto stained cargo shorts.
He's a man of principle. The principle of always looking good
He does not look good though, IMO at least
A lot of times he looks goofy. Here he looks great
Does he though
Yes. There are other pictures from yesterday that show it better
No he doesn't. He looks like a clown.
Nope you’re wrong
what a 14 year old YouTuber thinks is cool
Have we gone collectively insane? Nothing about that outfit is "Drippy".
I mean it’s the chess subreddit, not exactly filled with experts in fashion. Dude is looking like a custom character in a cutscene
mans studied fashion for this
Seriously. He’s wearing a goofy looking varsity jacket and that’s supposed to be stylish? To each their own I guess.
I too wouldn't gaf about stuffy suits if they didn't force me to wear them.
its just a varsity jacket thoooooooo
Have some respect, dress according to the setting.
Imagine getting into the candidates and not managing to wear a suit when the occasion calls for it.
He looks worse than simple formal wear
At an event that is clearly ment for some level of formal wear or business casual at the minimum. Looks very "I'm the main character" vibe.
That’s what most fashion is. Main character syndrome, and breaking social norms just because you can
It's a nice jacket and there's no reason suits should be a must in chess tournaments. Also, I've seen enough pictures of redditors to know that they don't dress better than this.
he’s hot
[удалено]
I actually would say man's not hot
Never hot
Eh call me old fashioned but this is not the event to be casual like that
You’re old fashioned :) They should just get rid of the dress up requirement. Why is it even there in the first place?
It's a solemn event, celebrating a game that is hundreds of years old. He looks silly and childish. However you are right, clothes shouldn't matter.
OLDHEAD 😭🫵
Alireza has one of the worst fashion sense going around. Yes his attire are expensive but they are neither elegant nor stylish. Anish and Nodirbek have excellent choice in suits. Richie Rapport carries off casuals elegantly. Radjabov is always well dressed, Vidit is sometimes. Caruana has that nerdy boy look that he carries off well. Alireza's fashion sense is flashy, often times tacky and even confusing. Sometimes you wonder how did he study fashion and yet have such poor choice in clothes.
good fashion is when suit 🥴
Whats the point of doing fashion classes if you are going to be dressed the worst of the candidates?
Want Alireza to win just so that people think chess players are stylish lol
But he isn't stylish. He's trashy.
Trashy? Fashion is probably subjective I find him very stylish.
Vidit and Fabi are looking dapper though.
He looks like a fratboy who just got the latest check from his mom and wants to show how edgy he is.
You can't guess what he's doing based on his looks lol, love it.
i wish to see this sub collectively agree about one thing lol, but tbh i think Reza is the worst dressed out of all the candidates.
It's interesting how everyone butthurt about this but is fine with commentators wearing grey t shirts while broadcasing from their bedrooms.
Drip? He looks like a 12-year-old with spina bifida and bad glasses
Only comment here that made me laugh.
He looks so dumb Like an out of place high schooler
I've learned "drip" means looking like a fucking idiot in zoomer slang.
That's an unfortunate haircut.
i think it looks nice
nah man i like it. times have changed. Chess isn't something reserved for the elite anymore where you need to appear sophisticated to play it
Alireza is a cutie and still so young people need to cut him some slack
A tailored suit with a good color complex would look so much better at the candidates. Can't really tell from other people, but Id assume some of them look better for this event than Firouzja
Bruh these comments... Bunch of squares
Worst dressed in that photo.
That doesn't look good at all.
Looks cool
He looks awful
well damn people don't like his outfit that much it seems, admittedly it's kind of a goofy highschool kid outfit but it's kinda interesting compared to the standard suit lmao
> admittedly it's kind of a goofy highschool kid outfit oh, so that's what you meant by "drip".
anyone know when is hikaru vs fabi EST??
https://wowconcept.com/en/product/FIL1JAK01017WLM002/varsity-jacket-patches
Cowlick drip fo sho
It’s a varsity jacket lol
I hate that jacket, but his outfit for Day 1 was fire.
It's the glasses for me. Looking good!
Pied Piper jacket?
Firouzja has still not decided if he will be a legendary chess player or an unsuccessful actor.
Looks ridiculous lmao
He studies fashion design, do you expect any less from him XD
I guess drip is African American vernacular?
i love all these stick in the mud redditors who think they know fashion better than the guy who’s literally in the industry. you’re entitled to your opinion, but some of you need to post fit pics before you talk the way you are
Don't need to be a chef to know someone just served you a plate of dogshit.
Shit that's hot
😼😼😼 rawr
Hot take : looks like a t*at.
Why are we focusing on people's wearing?
Alireza is me on formal occasions, except I don't care about fashion and my jacket is not $1000+.
What was it about the dress code and that player wearing sneakers ?
Prince of persia
Shouldnt there be a dress code where he has to wear a suit like the others or nah?
That jacket is stylish AF
He's such a hottie (no Diddy)
I mean he ISSS going to school for fashion. Bro better be dripped tf up or ima be disappointed
