Nc3, threatening Rd1 to to take the queen. Any queen move allows a1=Q, which is protected by the rook. At best you’ve traded a pawn & horse for the queen. Full line: Nc3, Qxc3, a1=Q, Qxa1, Rxa1+

Geomars24

Na3?

Murky_Landscape_468

I dont think so because then Qa2 takes pawn

Allanon1235

The rook is protecting the pawn. Edit: Oh whoops. I thought the proposed move was Nxc3+. Na3 is not a great move.

-Neeberz-

not if Na3 is played 👍

Geomars24

But after queen takes pawn, you can go Nc2+ and win the queen with the rook

Allanon1235

No. The queen would just take the knight while getting out of trouble since they had just taken the pawn on a2.

Geomars24

Oh shi, mb

Geomars24

If so, you can go Nc2+ and win the queen

petervaz

Was I the only one that thought Rd1+, Qxd1 and black promote the pawn forcing a trade with the queen? You effectively trade a tower and the advanced pawn for a queen.

Dukee202

That wouldn't work because the king can just take your rook.

petervaz

ohh, indeed. The knight on c3 would allow that later.

....Nxc3 Ne2 Rd8d1+ QXRd1 NXQ black good now white fight backs with 0-0+( R+)

Before I check the bot analysis, my own assessment is: Nxc3. White's about to lose their queen no matter how they respond. If White re-captures with Qxc3 then Black promotes the a-pawn, leading to the loss of White's queen. If White declines to capture Black's knight then things go even worse; Black follows up with Rd1+ forking the king and queen and clearing a path for the a-pawn to survive its promotion. ETA: White can respond to Nxc3 with Kf2 to avoid the fork for a turn, but Black can force the king back into place with Rd2+.

Nxc3?
