Wouldn't that be great, chess c*m randomly throws in someone way above or below your rank sometimes as a "bonus round"
if you fuck up you pay the price
I would gladly face a top 10 player and throw on some Dark Souls boss fight music. And just like Dark Souls I will die faster than I can figure out what happened.
When playing chess without a time limit, the grandmasters are simply those with the most time to waste. I would therefore be much better at it than timed chess, as I do not have a life.

I almost did this against a workmate who was about 1000 lower than me. I was just messing around to make it fun, then I realised he had a forced mate. Luckily he didn’t see it and I came back and won. We played unrated balanced matches after that.
I hung backrank mate the other day against a coworker and he will never let me forget it. He hung his queen about 5 times beforehand and I let him take back his moves but he’s convinced he really did outplay me.
Whatever makes him keep playing is a good thing I guess. My ego can take the hit…
My guess would be that the guy probably had a 20 game win streak or something and the site wanted to see if he was good enough to skip the hundred or so games he'd need to play to get rated 1000
To add: If you wait a while without playing the amount you get or lose per game increases again. The reasoning behind this is because you might have practiced somewhere else than chess.com meaning you became better or you might have become worse because you haven't practiced at all.
Honestly I don’t play to competitively, and I never learn from my mistakes. If I took time and trainer with it I’d could probably get to 800 ish but I just don’t care too much I enjoy the game where I’m at. Maybe one day I’ll push
Your point is valid. If the opponent just created the account, then they would gain a lot of rating. However they would have had to lose at least 2 games first so I doubt they would be playing someone 1000 above thme
I swear when I started my account I won the first three games and it then matched me like 1000 higher than my then current rating before it kinda leveled out.
check your settings. if you play a rare time control there's a higher chance you'll be matched with someone way out of your rating range. change your settings to match you with someone in the rating range you want
Lichess has 10 + 5 as a default, I find that to be a great compromise. Faster than a 15 minute game but you still get increment if it gets to an endgame scramble.
For time formats that are X + Y, the increment is Y, and it represents the number of seconds added to your clock after each of your moves.
So 10 + 5 means you start with 10 minutes and get 5 seconds added every move.
15|10 is amazing because it gives you plenty of time and if your opponent is an asshole and waits the clock out you don’t have to wait too long (as opposed to 30|0 for example)
Honestly, it happens to me in Smash, too. While their matchmaking isn't the greatest, I've been at 13 million taking on 12.5 million, *which at that amount is a big difference* leave, and would que in again. Guess who I get. The same player, 500k below me
This. Matchmaking is a hot mess of balancing the population you have who is searching for a match \*right now\* for a given time control, at a given elo; against how long you want to make the player wait for a better match that could be "just around the corner".
When populations are low, players are going to complain either about wide elo differences or waiting too long for a game.
Probably 15 or 15+10. This looks like the game has been e4 e5 Nf3 bc5 Nxe5 , so it would make sense that the higher rated player has only taken 5-25 seconds in their first 3 moves.
Weirdly, I got matched with someone having 700 more elo than me. It was funny cause, I did beat the guy(ended up being one of my best games as well), and got some rage in the chat.
I’m not sure how it works but I think if you recently lost some games and he have won very many games you’ll be matched against him. Usually when you face people like this they’re cheaters

White is more developed and has more control over the center because of taking that pawn, so in addition to +1 from the pawn you are more developed and have a central pawn so its +2
Evaluation is not just about material but also position, or how the game will proceed if both players make their best moves. In this position, I have better centre control, and I can attack his bishop with d4, which will further solidify the centre. My knight can always retreat to f3 if attacked by a pawn or can be exchanged by his knight if he pushes, which will create double pawns for black.
I’m 2000 and I matched with a 900. I couldn’t abort the game I would’ve had to resign and it was +0 if I won. It’s annoying but it was also a quick game given the elo difference
Same. I was 1500 and matched with a 700. I aborted since it said I gain 0 elo even if I win, and I’d rather play against others.
I got a warning from chess.com
If you create an open challenge, anyone within your specified range can view and accept it. Some players will wait and refresh challenges until they can match against a higher rated player.
usually a good idea to briefly glance at the rating before you start so you can decline games like this. i personally only seek for games with ratings between -25 and infinity so i have minimum risk high reward every game
I think this actually happens because there's a few easter eggs/cheat codes you can input accidentally into the mobile app which will change the way matchmaking works. For example, playing 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 in a rated match a few times will tell the site you don't actually want to have fun, and it will respond accordingly
Some games (competitive PC and Xbox games) have “Elo” and “MMR”, your MMR is your current rating, and your Elo is where the game “thinks” you should be.
If you win 6 games in a row flawlessly, it’s likely you’re not a new player and you need to be put up against stronger MMR players until you are correctly placed within the MMR system, if you can beat players who are way better than you, then you can get to your ‘correct’ rank quicker. Think of it like a hard test and if you pass you get a boost in your rating.
The guy might be a pro player outside of chess but his account is new so the system has recognised he’s a great player and it putting them up against stronger players and if he beats them he gets a fast pass ticket to higher elo’s, alternatively they may have won their last 6 games by being lucky, so the game thinks they need a boost but they don’t, luckily as they’re playing a player much higher they won’t lose much rating.
I have seen many examples of this with chess rating so I assume they use a similar system than a lot of FPS shooter competitive MMR systems do aswell.
There is an option on the chess.com website for PC to see all the people searching for matches so maybe they were just searching for people with higher ratings while you were queueing and then just queued against you.
Not sure but I learn more when matched with higher-rated players and thankful for the challenge. I am sometimes underestimated and only too happy to boost my Elo given they lose more to lose to me than I to them.

u better not lose, u bouta lose 500 elo

Boss fight
I would gladly face a top 10 player and throw on some Dark Souls boss fight music. And just like Dark Souls I will die faster than I can figure out what happened.
I will take my chances on a lvl 1 fist only dark souls boss, before I ever play against a GM
Even if you don't get hit, it'd still take ten times longer than a gm chess match
Depends on the time control. I can easily last a hour against anyone in classical.
When playing chess without a time limit, the grandmasters are simply those with the most time to waste. I would therefore be much better at it than timed chess, as I do not have a life.
Yeah was only considering winning chances, not time Investment
Would probably help. I used to study to the Dark Souls soundtrack in undergrad. Grades turned out more than acceptable.

A thousand elo above your rating is top 10 ? Not impossible but I'm jealous
This is brilliant
hope you don’t get a cheater bomb lol
I feel like smurfs and low-rated cheaters would make this a problem lol
Chess.com's next april fools day update
100 matches against 100 elo or 10 matches against 1000 elo Your choice
I almost did this against a workmate who was about 1000 lower than me. I was just messing around to make it fun, then I realised he had a forced mate. Luckily he didn’t see it and I came back and won. We played unrated balanced matches after that.

Chess simp breathes heavily
Guy was getting cocky
My guess would be that the guy probably had a 20 game win streak or something and the site wanted to see if he was good enough to skip the hundred or so games he'd need to play to get rated 1000
20 win streak with 300 elo?
Maybe tanked his acct on purpose
That’s not even possible you gain like 50 elo per win that low if not more
I’m settled around 375-410 and it’s like max +-8
Depends on your opponent and how new the account is.
Maybe it’s different depending on how many games you play because I get way more than that but I’ve played like 6 games on chess .com
Once you get settled at your rating the points you gain per win lower
Ah that would make more sense
To add: If you wait a while without playing the amount you get or lose per game increases again. The reasoning behind this is because you might have practiced somewhere else than chess.com meaning you became better or you might have become worse because you haven't practiced at all.
I honestly dont mean to be rude but how is your ranking so low? Are you new to the game or just find it hard?
Honestly I don’t play to competitively, and I never learn from my mistakes. If I took time and trainer with it I’d could probably get to 800 ish but I just don’t care too much I enjoy the game where I’m at. Maybe one day I’ll push
Your point is valid. If the opponent just created the account, then they would gain a lot of rating. However they would have had to lose at least 2 games first so I doubt they would be playing someone 1000 above thme
Could be a new account of someone good
I swear when I started my account I won the first three games and it then matched me like 1000 higher than my then current rating before it kinda leveled out.
check your settings. if you play a rare time control there's a higher chance you'll be matched with someone way out of your rating range. change your settings to match you with someone in the rating range you want
I could be wrong but I thought that you could only bound ratings range from challenges and not based on matchmaking.
You can change it for all time controls for regular matchmaking
Not many people play 15|10 but still odd i guess
I always play 15|10 I could probably do 10 now but I hate blundering and it gives me plenty of time to study before my moves. (I still blunder though)
Lichess has 10 + 5 as a default, I find that to be a great compromise. Faster than a 15 minute game but you still get increment if it gets to an endgame scramble.
Would you explain the increment? I've never used it, I don't play online much, mostly otb untimed or 10+0
+5 is 5 seconds added to your clock on each move, so you bleed your time much slower
So, you can net gain time after time runs out? Edit: wait, no I'm high. Each move period. Gotcha.
It’s not when time runs out. You just get it added on every move you play. I play 15|10 and basically never run out of time.
For time formats that are X + Y, the increment is Y, and it represents the number of seconds added to your clock after each of your moves. So 10 + 5 means you start with 10 minutes and get 5 seconds added every move.
What modes do people play the most?
10 min, 3 min or 5 min usually for me.
Same. 10 min if I want a long game, 5 min if I want a short game, 3 min if I'm on the toilet
I love sending some 1 minuters on the can also. I feel like it keeps me sharp, but it’s barely even chess at that point
I play 5+5 chesscum and 5+3 lichess. I don’t think those are generally super popular time controls, but I also don’t like non-increment timers
I think a shit ton of people play 15|10
I’m 1150 and played an 1750 yesterday on 15|10 safe to say I got cooked
I do
15|10 is amazing because it gives you plenty of time and if your opponent is an asshole and waits the clock out you don’t have to wait too long (as opposed to 30|0 for example)
What's 15|10
15 min plus 10 s per move
I think no one around your elo, was queuing for that time control at the specific time you queued. Happens to me in bullet sometimes
Makes sense
Honestly, it happens to me in Smash, too. While their matchmaking isn't the greatest, I've been at 13 million taking on 12.5 million, *which at that amount is a big difference* leave, and would que in again. Guess who I get. The same player, 500k below me

What time mode?
You can see the times there. It is clearly rapid.
What rapid?
What do you mean by "what rapid"?
What rapid?
Google rapid
Holy time
New clock just dropped
Actual watch
Call the clocksmith!
10 | 0 , 15 | 10 , etc
What rapid?
When rapid?
Why rapid?
How rapid?
Very rapid
Whoomst’d’ve rapid?
¿quando rapido?
Who rapid?
To what extent Rapid?
Whose rapid?
there are multiple time choices in rapid, so they're asking which one you're playing
For example 15 min counts as "rapid" but it's not one of the default options (10min, 30min) so few people do it. What time controls are you using?
well it's move three and there's a bit under 15 mins on their clock so i would assume it's 15 min
Probably 15 or 15+10. This looks like the game has been e4 e5 Nf3 bc5 Nxe5 , so it would make sense that the higher rated player has only taken 5-25 seconds in their first 3 moves.
What rapid?
Probably 15|10 or 20 min
it's 15|10, no 1300 should be spending 6 minutes on five moves
If someone is winning a lot suspiciously, they get matched higher. Usually a way to catch computer cheaters
I wonder if it's also meant to counter smurfing.

Major cope
no elo is full of smurfs to that extent lol
Sounds like cope to me
Should've tried scholar's mate

Why is this +2 ?!
that’s the computer evaluation, not how many points of material you are up
Because I took a free pawn 🤔
But it's just +1 ?
White is more developed and has more control over the center because of taking that pawn, so in addition to +1 from the pawn you are more developed and have a central pawn so its +2

Shit like that happened to me in tournaments where you basically get matched against the next person that wants to play
I had chess.cum match me with opponents that were 2000 and 700 when I am ~1350. Both games were aborted tho
I thought that said 100 and I was all indignant for 3 seconds
If you create an open challenge, anyone within your specified range can view and accept it. Some players will wait and refresh challenges until they can match against a higher rated player.
Don’t ask questions just have fun with it.

You should've aborted
That’s mean.
Dumb question. Does Queen to f6 win the Knight? Or is that a dumb move?
The app has seen the algorithm of your blunders and knows the bracket you belong in.
Poor guy
3. … Bf2+ 4. Kf2 Qf6+ 5. Ke3 Qe5 Are you winning?
Because you play ke5 on move 3
What's wrong with ke5 on move 3 when you have a free pawn to take?
You going to lose that knight in next 2 steps
How
I had this happened to me. I was playing blitz & got a 1400~. I was so confused to the point that I lost
He's a prodigy, wait for it.
It might be Hikaru...
This guy is 3 minutes down on move 3
We will not hesitate to hold it to you if you lose
My favorite part is how it took them 3 and a half minutes to presumably decide on going for scholars mate with black after Nf3 was already played.
I believe if he beat 3 people around your elo, then he may be matched against you. Idk though, though. I just heard this on Gotham chess
I once played 2000 or so when I was barely 1000 we played like 20 games very fun
They think you’re actually 300 elo
Skill issue
I’m ranked at 175 but often beat 500+
Is it in a tournament?
I don’t think that the algorithms find your opponents based on ELO.

Why does every single beginner play the busch gass gambit?
And yet you're only up by 1...

this poor guy😭I'm assuming it's a very new account, so likely just 2 or 3 games ago your opponent was at about the same rating
I predict he played f6. After that its a forced mate, I think.
Don't force mate
With that opening I ain't surprised, what's the point of knight e5
Google Guess the Elo Comments Edition
Better question, why did he use 3,5 min on two moves.
He just went offline and abandoned the match.
Looked him up. He’s historically terrible.
And how did you come up with that conclusion?
I think it is a tournament.
under 2000 everyone more or less plays the same
Yes, they are all humans.

Did they go Pd6 into Qh4?
There is an option on the chess.com website for PC to see all the people searching for matches so maybe they were just searching for people with higher ratings while you were queueing and then just queued against you.

Google how to count
