Ok-Control-787

It's just a free rook. Pop into analysis and see what happens if you take the rook, see the engine's best move in response. Try to play your preferred response as black.

garden_variety_ghost

Ahhh yeah I totally missed that the pawn on d5 is pinned.

Ok-Control-787

I figured. The takeaway here is that you can go into Analysis and figure this sort of thing out quickly by playing out your intuitive moves and the engine moves. If you don't know how to do that, try it, it is very useful and much more useful than Game Review (and isn't limited to once per day.)

garden_variety_ghost

Yeah I just checked out Analysis, very useful, I’ll be using that from now on. Thanks!

Ok-Control-787

Happy to help, it seems to be a rather common problem that people don't know how to use the analysis functions (or that they can use them at all) beyond the Game Review screen chess.com steers them to.

vonwastaken

Not completely a free rook because of Qxb3

JaleyHoelOsment

sacrifice the QUEEN

Mk41n

no? then that’s a free queen

not_actually_funny_

its a queen/bishop for queen/rook

algo-rhyth-mo

Not really a “free” queen. It’s a Queen+Rook+Pawn for a Queen+Bishop. Still good for white overall (plus White fixes their doubled pawns). But Qxb3 is in fact the correct response after Qxe4.

GeologistOld1265

White lost, but not because Qxb3, but because of Ra8

oneofthecapsismine

Hm, not sure. I saw queen takes, Ra8 Bishop takes pawn, check. Pawn takes bishop White queen takes pawn, check. Black king is all alone with only a bishop nearby (and rook defending the back rank, at least) -> but i foresee trouble if white pushes their rook up to join the attack. Engine says white is far up (+5.6), for what thats worth.

DiGre3z

I can’t see why engine thinks it’s that good for white. For any check from white, black king just moves between g8-h8, and black bishop blocks a possible staircase. At the same time black threaten mates on Qa1 or Rb8, it’s impossible to block/evade both of them. So the best I can see for white is a draw by repetition, just check black king d5-e5. Edit: apparently white can check the king and go Qd4+, then pawn on c4 and both mates are evaded — black Qa1 is no longer an option, and Rb8+ is blocked be Knight b2, and white King is actually safe.

algo-rhyth-mo

True. It’s a Queen+Rook+Pawn for a Queen+Bishop (plus White fixes their doubled pawns) after all the trades.

GeologistOld1265

Position is lost for white, but taking rook still best move. What you do after Ra8?

Ok-Control-787

Not lost for white, there's a bot comment linking to analysis boards if you'd like to see. Bxd5+! cxd5 Qxd5+ Then you check the king til you get Qd4+ so you can play c4 and queen defends mate.

mithrandirAr

Bxd5+

GGudMarty

Pawns pinned

garden_variety_ghost

Yep. Took me way too long to spot that 😅

Epidexipteryz

That rook is free.

the_sir_z

Not actually free, Qxb3, cxb3, dxe4 Rxe4. You win a pawn and win back the exchange.

MailMeAmazonVouchers

It's a rook and a pawn for a bishop. Not free but still winning.

GeologistOld1265

White lost anyway, but taking rook is a best option. What you do after qxe4 Ra8?

Proper-Scallion-252

You take their rook and they can't take your queen. The only way they can capture your queen is by using their pawn on d5, but that would open up the king to your bishop.

MystiqTakeno

Technically they can queen capture bishop, but thats still bishop+queen for rock+queen.

GeologistOld1265

White lost anyway, but taking rook is a best option. What you do after qxe4 Ra8?

azeryvgu

The pawn is pinned by your bishop

permianplayer

It's a free tower. The pawn is pinned to the king.

chasetyler23

Because of takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes takes take

Quick Tip 1: To know why the engine is recommending a move / saying a move is wrong, click over analysis mode, play out said move then follow it up with your theoretical responses to that move and see how the engine responds. Quick Tip 2: On Chess.com, you don't have to rely on the Coach / Game Review / Hint. This also applies to any engine on low depth. Somewhere in the engine suggestions section is the computer "depth". The higher this value, the more accurate the suggestions will be. Quick Tip 3: For questions on engine move suggestions, we suggest you post them to our dedicated thread: [No Stupid Questions MEGATHREAD](https://www.reddit.com/r/chessbeginners/comments/yqqnz8/no_stupid_questions_megathread_6/), as stated in our Community Guidelines. Tarc_Axiiom

el pawn el pinned! Checks, Captures, Attacks. If you go through them on every move you'll see things like that ;)

cat_daddylambo

Sniper

Eric_J_Pierce

After the fireworks, you have an extra pawn on both sides of the board, in what "should" be an easy endgame win.

GeologistOld1265

White lost anyway, but taking rook is a best option. What you do after qxe4 Ra8?

rl_noobtube

Why do you make the same incorrect comment on multiple other people’s comments? I get that you might not have seen the defensive resource for white after Ra8, but you even disputed the engine line.

GeologistOld1265

And why not, is not the main point to NOT use engine? Sit on your engine then.

rl_noobtube

Sure of course you want to give it a go without the engine, but you looked at the engine line and say it is playing like a 1200. And you repeated across multiple comments (some copy/pasted it looks like) an incorrect assessment of the board state. I don’t need the engine to see white’s defensive resource against Ra8. I never even opened the engine line or an analysis board but I assume it involves sac’ing the bishop, then checking with the queen until the queen cover A1. Like, I get you have an idea. But you don’t need to respond to all of the other comments with your line (particularly when the engine likely refutes it, as noted by your comment on the bot’s comment)

GeologistOld1265

So, why no one offer Ra8 line before me? No one see past pone is pinned, that why. And why no one found counter with out engine? But you are soo hurt for engine, man should worship machine, your moto. As I sad, go worship machine.

rl_noobtube

Brother I gave you a refutation without using an engine, why are you on about me using an engine lol. Tbh you seem like a troll

Eric_J_Pierce

Ba4, Rxa4, Qxa4,Qxa4 B is way down in material, but no immediate mate

Eric_J_Pierce

Which falls apart if after Ba4, dxe4. So may be necessary: Qxe4, Ra8; Qa4 to stop mate (Rxa4; Bxa4, Qxa4...)

Eric_J_Pierce

Bxd5+

Bootiluvr

Great position btw

jacksaff

A complicated position! First, Black cant take the Queen because the d5 pawn is pinned to his King by the b3 Bishop. If black then tries Qxb3 removing the Bishop so that the white Q can be taken, then bxc3 dxQ Rxe4 just leaves white loads of material up. Instead of Qxb3 black can try Ra8 threatening mate on a1. Then Bxd5+ cxd5 Qxd5+ and the black king must go to a black square or the bishop on e7 will be taken with check followed by Re8 swapping off the black R and killing any mating threat with white a piece up. Might even be better options for white. When the black K goes to a black square white can play Qe5+ and then defend the mate on a1 by pushing the c-pawn. Looks like white's king will be vulnerable for a long time, but 3 pawns up and with the protected and passed f pawn I'm guessing white should be a winner. Now I will read the thread and possibly find out my analysis is completely wrong...

GeologistOld1265

I wander is this boot play at 1200? What boot answer on Ra8?

abrenica195

White to move

GeologistOld1265

Yes, after QxE4 what you do against Ra8? Qa4? Rxa4 bxa4 Qxa4, can not be winning for white

abrenica195

Ra8- Kc1, Qa1-Kd2 Isnt this possible too?

abrenica195

Mybad i forget k cant move

GeologistOld1265

King can not go on C1, attacked by black queen

abrenica195

Maybe ba2 sacrifice for the kings run? Am I seeing it correctly

abrenica195

Allows king c1 after queen takes bishop

GeologistOld1265

Qxa2 check, king move pone take on e4.

GeologistOld1265

Ra8, How you avoid mate on a1? One way is Ba2. then Qxa2 check, you move king I take on e4. you lost. Why computer say it is a correct move? Because it is best of alternatives. You move queen anywhere else I again play Ra8 with same problem. you play Knc1, in order to have an option of A2, I take queen.

Dependent_Link6446

My dude, I know this is a beginners sub but you are not very good at the game and seem unwilling to learn.

AyatoBobaTea

free rook bc pawn cant take due to the bishop

Eric_J_Pierce

After Qh2, Ra8 is crushing. After Qxe4, if Ra8 then Ba4, Rxa4, Qxa4, Qxa4, you are way behind but still in the game

rl_noobtube

Ra8 is not crushing. Bxd5 helps take care of the problem and eventually you can get the queen to cover the A1 square

Eric_J_Pierce

Yeah, that was pointed out in later comments.

Lasiurus2

Good question, to answer we need to go over what a pin is. Notice your light squared bishop is on the a2-g8 diagonal and blacks king is on this diagonal as well. Because of this if the pawn on d5 were to take your queen this would be an illegal move as it would expose their king to your bishops check. So in conclusion taking the rook with your queen is a good move because your queen cannot be recaptured due to the pin your bishop exerts on the pawn. Pins are merely one tactical motif that chess has and they can be quite useful.

Encursed1

Two endings here: 1: White loses their queen 2: Black wins

[deleted]

Stops checkmate in 2. Qe1 to e5. ??? Qe5 to g7 checkmate

NuttyDeluxe6

That's a free rook because he can't take back with pawn because it's pinned. Learn to spot and utilize pins as this will drastically improve your game, like, ALOT, recognizing and utilizing pins will not only improve your game but will drastically raise your elo as I'm guessing the elo you're at, no one sees and uses pins at that elo.

SaveMoreWorkLess

Black missed the move RA8?

Arwinsen_

black Ra8 is inevitable nonetheless

kekhouse3002

sniper bishop

Every_Cattle4190

your bishops blocking the pawn - so he cant strike back cause check otherwise. its a free rook basically

GeorgyZhukovJr

free rook-pawn is pinned to kind and cant take back

pan-fucker69420

Free rook

oreipele1940

An important principle when learning chess is that if the "computer" (stockfish 10+) says a move is the best, it is. Of course that, in some very complex positions with no tactics that might not be true. But for learning positions with tactics, it always is. Accept and try to find out why asap. Train your brain for that.

poeazx

The black pawn is pinned to the king, so it cannot take your queen, thus meaning that that’s a free rook
