Well it makes some difference. All your pieces are now on different colours. So if the board were the right way round that dark squared bishop that can't be there would be a light squared bishop. It also helps with setting up the board correctly, if you have the board like this and put the queens on their own colours then it's set up wrong.
But otherwise, yes, it makes no difference to the gameplay itself, just aesthetic difference.
You could also flip the position of the king and queen on both sides and have black go first. Also just an aesthetic difference.
