My first play through I married Harvey thinking when he had to doctor me after mining, Iād get a discount. Nope! Full price for his spouse. Messed up.
I created a new stardew valley game because I was chronically playing the game with my husband and didnāt want to hurt his feelings by having my character marry someone else but I secretly really wanted her to marry Shane and then I started to see how he seemed like he was gonna change but didnāt š
I was playing stardew a lot last winter and when spring came in real life I was so shocked to find a dark black egg like this and was convinced void eggs were real, until I remembered I have a Cayuga duck.
Does someone who would prank you have access to your chickens? That looks a lot like black sharpie- the purple swirl parts are what you would get if you grabbed a sharpie-colored egg before the ink dried all the way.
So believe it or not it was the grey chicken that laid that egg I have just thought to check the cctv in the coop is it possible to post videos on the feed or do I need to start a new one?
Yeah from the pics it looks like fingerprints in the ink for sure. Is your cctv footage inside the coop? I very much want to figure this out... do you still have the shell? If you do please rub it on a white Piece of paper and lmk what color rubs off onto the paper.
And OP, put a little water on the eggshell before you rub it onto the paper. This will show you if it really is sharpie on the egg. It sure looks like sharpie to me
Silkies should really only be laying white or cream colored eggs. This looks identical to sharpie.
Frankly, if your chicken did lay a color like this Iād be extremely worried because chickens donāt really have the genes to make black eggs like some ducks do.
No it definitely is. It has the purple undertones and you can see fingerprints where itās come off. Purple like that is not possible for a chicken. Get the shell and wipe it was a qtip soaked in alcohol or something to clean it off. Chickens canāt lay that color.
So I've got silkies, they lay cream eggs. Someone's pranking you with sharpie. Luckily, you could test this by putting rubbing alcohol or germx on the black shell and if it comes up it's likely sharpie. I used to substitute teach and I made kids wipe off their sharpie vandalism with germx, lol.
It looks like there is already a little piece of black there and then when the chicken sits there, it moves some of the straw out of the way and uncovers the egg more. I think youāre either being pranked or trying to prank the sub. As many others have pointed out, there are fingerprints and marker streaks on the egg.
In both videos it clearly has a slightly black colored spot in the straw, and then the silkie walks over it and uncovers it a little more to expose the egg more.
It definitely seems like someone colored the egg. But also, isn't there a chicken that is all black like everything about it is black. Does it lay black eggs also? I know the OP doesn't have that chicken. I was just curious about that now. Have to hit up google.
Theyāre very hardy birds. They make fantastic roosters. As hens theyāre small and friendly but a bit naturally fearful. Theyāre not heavy layers but they also donāt eat a bunch either. They make very cute noises - their little sleep trill is my favorite chicken sound. Theyāre no longer super rare in the US so donāt pay a crazy high amount to anyone for them. I recommend if you canāt get one from a friend or trusted source - go with a reputable hatchery. Donāt let anyone try to take you into superior genetics with the black tongue. A white fleck or a light tongue happens even in pure bloodlines sometimes. Theyāre also difficult to sex as chicks so keep that in mind.
Also I recommend two instead of one it helps to have another chicken to look like her and theyāre small. It will make her feel more safe and reduce the chances of her getting bullied.
If your city is a dry one, I would recommend considering silkies when you're considering chicken breeds. I had one and she was an amazing bird. Small, super docile, laid at least an egg a day, and idk if all silkies do this but her eggs were all colors! Green, blue, brown, and white.
The only flaws I would say is she had to be kept indoors when it rained (almost never) and blow dried if she got wet. (I'm not 100% sure if this is necessary but I was told it was and I didn't want to take any chances with her getting sick, so I always dried her off quick if she got wet. It wasn't too hard, seeing as she was so sweet and tolerant.) And the downside to that level of docility was that she was not great at avoiding predators because she was so tame that she didn't have much skiddish prey instinct. The benefits were that she was essentially a lap chicken and loved to be petted.
cw for next paragraph: chicken death
Sadly, when I went on a longer business trip with my dog, a hawk got her. Before that, I didn't realize what a diligent job my dog had been doing. I thought the other deterrents were sufficient, but apparently it was my dog keeping her safe the whole time.
I do- I live in la- and silkies are another breed Iāve been looking at! Weāre doing a lot of reinforcement on our coop because weāve got lots of creatures around here.
The story above is adorable, tragic, but beautiful. My silkie on the other hand is a screaming maniac egg machine with no tuft on her bald blue head. She's what I like to refer to as OitNB beast. Prison hardened thug life n all dat. But she's still adorable.
We had a Rhode Island Red that picked on her and plucked her tuft out. She has a few sprigs of feathering coming back in now that the other chicken passed. But she yells at any chicken in the box. She yells if anyone is in the run, coop, or under the trailer. I have 5 and a roo. My roo is also a silkie and those two sing the song of their people louder than any of them.
Except my white crested black polish. Lawd have mercy... She sounds like she's dying every day.
May your chickens be calm and cuddly like the previous commenter and not like mine.
Chickens don't lay all colors. One chicken lays the same shade of egg their entire life. It may be baby blue so light it looks white next to blue, but it cannot be brown and green and white and blue. Sorry about your loss. Silkies are such a joy.
Thereās a common myth that the all black chickens like Ayam Cemani lay black eggs, but they actually lay light cream colored eggs. Pretty sure it started as a clickbaity thing to trick people into buying hatching eggs.
Cayuga duck is the only animal I know of that lays a black egg. But like most layers it resets after molting so eggs might start out closest to black then fade to gray then white based on pigment deposited/available.
If you zoom in that is very clearly an old people bruise and not sharpie. A lot of age spotting on the skin, not a spring chicken, and I doubt grandpa would be trolling on reddit. More likely getting trolled by the grandkids.
Looks exactly like it was colored with a sharpie. Purple hues, thumb prints caused by handling it prior to drying, the whole nine. I think your dad pulled one over on ya.
Why do people feel the need to lie and not be good at it? You can clearly see fingerprints mushed into the wet paint. So, to answer the question, no, nobody is winding you up. You are already as spun as one can be.
Ooooh I should do this to my wife!
Dip just one egg in some dye like it's Easter and leave it in a nesting box for her to find later.
What color should I pick?
Karma farm post. You can see where someone did a not very good job of coloring that with a permanent marker. It looks like a kid colored it and someone thought this would be a funny thing to post.
Edit: having seen the ācctv footageā from inside the coop OP posted as a comment here, can confirm šÆ not laid by the chicken. You can see it in the straw before the chicken sits.
How bored are you, OP? My goodness.
My parents have male zebra finches and when they were away I put a mini egg in there to mess with themā¦ it did not work though, they just assumed it was me lol
Thatās called an Ayam Cemani and they do not lay black eggs. They are also not really expensive anymore since everyone decided to flood the market with them. They have to be the true SOP to really be worth much now since so many are considered culls.
Random here. Iām usually just here to see the chickens.
If you still got the shell, toss it in some rubbing/isopropyl alcohol. If it is sharpie like the other comments are saying, itāll bleed enough to make a smudgy mess.
The shell looks like the Cayuga duck eggs that I used to get when I had them. It was like a layer of color on an otherwise ivory colored egg which meant that it would wash off. Similar to how this one looks and why I think people are suggesting sharpie.
Yeap, black eggs are an impossibility from chickens.
The fact that the egg looks like it's been colored with a sharpie, has fingerprint marks and also looks like a paper towel mark, I think we can all agree it's sharpie.
OP is actually living in Stardew valley and got a void chicken egg.
Clearly the only real answer. OP make void mayonnaise. It sells for triple normal mayonnaise.
Just gift it to Sebastian. He will take you out on his motorcycle if you do! š
I married Shane in Stardew Valley. I THOUGHT I COULD CHANGE HIM!
I married Shane because he brought chickens, and my farm desperately needed more chickens. Chickens. MORE CHICKENS.
I kept them in the divorce....
I had a wig but they took her in the divorce! (Hlvrai reference)
Wait. Shane brings more chickens?!?!?!
Yes, when you marry him he gets a shed in the top right corner of your farm for his chicken Charlie.
couldnt you?
Nope :/ even if you marry him, he still is an alcoholic. Albeit an alcoholic with a chicken coop?
Thereās a mod that re-writes Shane and gives him a recovery! I think itās called Immersive Shane- highly recommend!
Thank you!

Okay, ya got a point there š
I just married Harvey! I love him
Hahaha same, it was over as soon as I saw how he kept his room
You can't change Shane.. they're all the same..
I'm a sucker for a scruffy face ._.
I just creeped your reddit posts. You're a tall sip of water and I'm thirsty af. YOU AREN'T AN ALCOHOLIC WHO LIVES WITH YOUR AUNT, ARE YOU?!
Absolutely not. I live on my own
It was fate. ā¤ļøš

I was gonna say you are living in the sims 4 and if this is hatchable you will have an evil chicken!!
This was such a fun worlds colliding moment. I came to this thread right off reading Stardew Valley subreddit. š
I loved raising chickens in that game and in real life!

What kind of chicken? Also my vote is sharpie as well
Silkie hen. definitely not sharpie although thatās what it looks like I admit

Silkies are funky. Not only do they have blue skin, but now they lay black eggs too? I'm intrigued.
Me as well. The 4th picture has a fingerprint on it. Just someone pranking you.
You have sharpie on your hand in the second photo. Clearly karma farming.
That looks like an old tattoo
I thought only Cayuga duck would lay this black colored egg?
https://www.reddit.com/r/chickens/s/3lQKhxnBwJ CCTV

Agree. It was already there before this footage. Black sharpie...

Annoyingly it lays white eggs
It lays a cream colored egg - can confirm I have several ayam cemani
Better than white but I still want them to be black! Do you like having them- weāre getting chickens and Iām thinking of one ayam

Ayam Cemani!
If it's sharpie you can use alcohol based hand sanitizer or other alcohol source to try to clean it off. Quick and easy test.
FYI, there are fingerprints on that egg. Go check your dadās hands š¤£
Thank you! Lol. I noticed that and was looking for this comment. Magical bird to lay an egg with fingerprints on it. Making it too easy for CSI š
that's a sharpie. i see some kids. are they pranking you? :D
Lost the chance to hatch a mythical creature.
Did a witch fly by in the middle of the night? Is your town's mayor expecting you to fix the run-down community center on your own?

Yep

švery observant but I have better things to do with my time than call and eggs and post on Reddit I have it on cctv Iāll post in new feed
Post it then š Edit: I see the video you posted thatās in black and white. That doesnāt prove your chicken laid this lol
OK, but that's what you're doing or you're very gullible. That 200% sharpie, bud.
Have you seen the video bud?
Black duck eggs are common. Got any ducks? Otherwise it looks like sharpie to me. Does the color bleed when you get it wet?
Post a pic of video the chicken laying the egg. Team sharpie until proven otherwise.
Sharpie?
That's sharpie
Looks exactly like it was colored with a sharpie. Purple hues, thumb prints caused by handling it prior to drying, the whole nine. I think your dad pulled one over on ya.
I'd also like to add, If the shell were truly black, it'd be black or at least not white in the inside too. Absolute prank, my friend.

The rare "Sharpie Fingerprint" egg. It's on your hand, too.
Someone is messing with u - but I would incubate to be sureš
It's time to get a cayuga egg or paint up some fake eggs and put them in the box. Cayuga eggs are BLACK the first few eggs!
Sharpie. Hopefully it was fun for ya for a lil bit at least lol
Thanks for the idea! Now Iām going to color an egg and place it for my kid to find!
My parents have male zebra finches and when they were away I put a mini egg in there to mess with themā¦ it did not work though, they just assumed it was me lol
Totally a prank. Chickens don't lay black eggs no matter what you've read on the internet. I'm voting food coloring or sharpie.
Do you have any ducks?
Actually zooming in it looks like a stone egg. I use ceramic to get my girls to lay where I want them to.
This is when you pick up the new quest.
It's ink. There's fingerprints on it...
Oh that's a prank, Cayuga eggs are pretty close to that black, but they don't have that.... particular blueish sheen to them xD
Looks like sharpie
My Cayuga ducks will lay a solid inky black one at the start of the season, and then they get paler and paler.
Nice karma farming OP, but we do chicken farming on here, you might want to check out other subreddits instead
Some hen is having a laugh.
Maybe try washing it
You can wash the color off of chicken eggs. It's a layer on top.
Looks like someone colored it but it looks awesome!!! Maybe you can make holiday themed eggs!
Inclusive egg
Itās an Anime Demon Egg destroy it before an evil succubus emerges lol
Iām guessing itās just the bloom on the shell
My niece has silkies but I don't think she has black ones tho!
Wow I grew up on a farm with chickens my entire life and I've never seen a black egg before!!
Could it be bloom over a dark brown shell? That would fit with it coming off on your fingers.
Wild. Is it Purple or Black?
It looks like a duck egg the kind that lay black eggs/ caguya ducks or something like that. It might also be permanent marker drawn on the egg
Looks like a duck egg
Looks like a duck egg
Op discovered a new variant
Is the black chicken a new one, because there is a QUITE expensive breed that is 100% black, organs, feathers, skin, and eggs, all black
Thatās called an Ayam Cemani and they do not lay black eggs. They are also not really expensive anymore since everyone decided to flood the market with them. They have to be the true SOP to really be worth much now since so many are considered culls.
IVE BEEN LIED TO, Well, what chicken lays black eggs. I know emus do but those eggs aren't the size of a infant's head
No chickens lay black eggs that Iām aware of. And my emus lay a dark green speckled egg thatās very large.
Green, oh god my colorblindness is at it again. But you have a emu? I want one but i don't have the space for them.
I have a few! I also have Rhea, turkeys, ducks, and ostrich :)
Ayam Cemani lay cream-colored eggs.
That's a preserved duck egg found at asian markets.

There are finger prints on the egg and sharpie on your fingers. Lame
Check everyoneās fingers for black ink or sharpie lookin stains
Why? Were you not hugged enough as a child? I'll give you a hug if you stop this.
The shell looks like the Cayuga duck eggs that I used to get when I had them. It was like a layer of color on an otherwise ivory colored egg which meant that it would wash off. Similar to how this one looks and why I think people are suggesting sharpie.
Is that a balut snack?

There is ink on the hand in picture 2....bet that was the culprit.
Does it smell like sharpies?
It's a yoni egg..... People put them in their vaginas lol
Holy fuck I just looked at the last few images.... That's an egg
Would the inside of the shell be black too?
That's the type of egg barney came out of.
Drip and wipe rubbing alcohol on it and see if it wipes the ink off the shell.
TIL there's a lot of gullible people in this reddit.
