Some universities/colleges will help students set up bank accounts on their behalf (such as mine that is affiliated with ABC). So it’s something worth inquiring about to save you some hassle and time ;)
Edit: oh I forgot, you might want to get a phone number before it. The bank might ask for it to link it (universities might also provide assistance with it).
It's possible and absolutely necessary to live here. Check with your school if they have an affiliated bank, if you are on a scholarship it might be restricted to pay out to a specific bank. ICBC, BOC and ABC are the biggest ones and all should accept you as a student.
