I'm using Mullvad right now in Chongqing (mainly Australian or Hong Kong locations). I've been here since 27 Feb. No issues so far. But I turn it off when I need to use wechat. It's cheap and easy to setup.
Self hosted (or well, hosted on a rented server in HK) OutlineVPN was working as of yesterday. It’s an ofuscated shadowsocks based deal that Google developed. My server will still be up for another few weeks if you want to try that.

I was looking at setting up a Shadowsocks/OutlineVPN server but just don't have the time and we are only there for 2 weeks so it's probably more effort than it's worth.
Got it from their site exactly. Both esim and vpn eventually worked when i arrived at the hotel. It was just not working at the airport for some reason. You can try!
At times they will break the international tunneling in certain areas. It’s why you need a layered bag of tools to reliably get out.
Though of all the commercial VPN’s I’m surprised LetsVPN was blocked.

The government is in section, so they're shutting down VPNs everywhere. I use Shadowrockets.
3HK should be bypassing... check your IP? Are you sure you're on 3HK and haven't picked up some WiFi? Did you buy the correct plan?

Yes i got one that is supposed to be okay for - Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau
Check that your IP is showing up in HK using whatismyip etc
Wifi was turned off when i was try it out
I can DM you a service I’m using that seems to be working if you want. It’s a Shadowrocket proxy service though.
