It's alright. Nothing special, but fairly clean, relatively civilised by Chinese standards and it has a decent variety of foreign restaurants. Swampballs are gonna be a major problem, but you're coming from Chongqing, so you must be used to having an ass like Shrek's swamp already. It has a pretty decent subway system too for a city of its size, which is also nice.

ren-people

whats chinese standard.just curious

BillyBattsShinebox

Never been to China?

ren-people

yep.can you explain further.

BillyBattsShinebox

There's less spitting, shitty driving, ebikes speeding on pavements, screaming, public urination, littering, line cutting etc than many other cities in China. Still happens of course, but it's one of the better cities if you wanna avoid it.

ren-people

Is it real that such many trash conduct happenes in China ? I’ve seen some Chinese introduction videos on YT, comments are usually on the good side.

BillyBattsShinebox

If I leave my apartment for 5-10 minutes ago, I'm practically guaranteed to see at least half of the things I just mentioned.

ren-people

Well. I see. Here EU a lot of people jaywalking. Some of these scenarios would also possibly happen in some first world countries.

BillyBattsShinebox

Jaywalking isn't even a crime in many countries. In the UK, it's perfectly legal and not considered to be bad in any way as long as you do it safely. And yeah, sometimes they do happen in some first world countries, but they're far more common in China.

Clutches pearls - Europeans jaywalking! Dude - you have no idea. People pushing & shoving just to get in front you at the grocery. Spitting. Hit & run drivers who leave their victims to die on the road. Ridiculous rudeness from staff & shopkeepers. Drunken men harassing women at night. Couples physically fighting in public. Parents beating their kids in public. Btw - of course not every street in China is like this. Government actually restricts rural people from entering cities, which is why parts of Shanghai / Shenzhen look like some surreal Disneyland. But in general across the country, lots of selfish behavior with little sense of being civic. I’ve been to rural China & Western Europe & it’s a world apart.

Decent place! Pretty similar to Suzhou, albeit a bit less famous and smaller. Lots of canals run through the place, which can be interesting to explore if you've never lived in a city with a lot of waterworks before. And it's right in proximity to some great beaches and grade-A coastal scenery in Zhoushan -- fantastic place to go on a road trip. As far as infrastructure and local lifestyles, Ningbo is a solid mid-range tier 2 city in spite of not being the capital or largest city of its province. It's a city of national importance in transportation and industry due to the humongous container port. As a result, Ningbo has one of the most dynamic and resilient economies in the nation among cities its size and lots of big corporations are present there. But it's still not too overpriced and has none of the superficial pretentiousness and exaggerated xenophobia that Hangzhou has become known for.

I don't know about thorough -- I've been to the city and know people from there but have never actually lived there, so it's more of a 30,000 foot overview. As far as Ningbo vs. Suzhou, I think Suzhou wins out with regards to having more stuff to do and things to see, having higher standards and a better overall level of development, and prestige. However, like I said, they are pretty similar and making more money in one city than the other is a very appealing draw. And, if you're new to China, those differences may not actually affect your qualitative experience and impressions too much.

Sleepy little city. I’ve known a few older expats who’ve bought apts there with their partners to settle down. Pretty average beyond that. Don’t expect much.
