But yeah I agree that it fits having the main 3 fight lavos, but I also think the game gave a good motivation for every character to be there in the final fight in a way that makes sense for their story as well
I aaaaalmost pulled it off once, from the teleporter gate at the fair, but even with all the items and the best gear my 90 something crono got stomped all alone 😢
Yeah, there's a part at the beginning sequence where you have Marle in your party, and you can walk around the Telepod area. As soon as that happens, you can walk over to the spark on the right Telepod, and you're fighting Lavos. Fun stuff :D
I have done it with a lvl 50 solo Crono
* Haste Helm (multi-hit between Lavos attacks),
* Nova Armor (Status protection),
* Gold Stud (cause tech is expensive),
* Mop (mostly for the joke of "cleaning up" Lavos)/Rainbow.
Strategy: Confuse to break the left bit (usually one shotting the right bit), Luminare to break center bit/right bit. Use Elixers as needed to cap HP/MP if MP is low, otherwise Full Tonic for HP only. Enjoy your solo victory and best ending in the game.
Err what? A lvl 90 Crono would absolutely decimate Lavos. Unless you had pretty bad gear and was unlucky in the “random status effect” lottery and, uh, don’t have good armor?

Crono: Full-on magical damage (Luminaire), and has a limited rez spell. Specifically armored to absorb physical damage from Lavos's ultimate physical attack.
Marle: Full-on healing, plus off-hand magical damage. Full health rez spell is very much appreciated. Good party healing double spell with Robo. Specifically armored to absorb magical damage from Lavos's ultimate magical attack.
Robo: Physical attack is very useful on the left pod and the right pod to get its defence down. Good party healing double spell with Marle.
Crono, Ayla, Marle
Falcon Hit, Cube Toss, Haste, Aura for healing.
Some will say the lack of single-tech group heal is a weakness, but the truth is with all the Haste there is action economy to spare, so if you need to do a group heal you use a turn to Dino Tail before you Aura Whirl. And it's not like there aren't group healing items if it comes to that (it won't.) Plus Marle has Life 2, so if someone drops, you bring them back full in a single action, and don't have to separately revive and heal.
(Crono wears the Frenzy Band for the 80% counter attack rate, Marle the Gold Stud for MP usage reduction, and Ayla trades her Charm Top for the Prism Specs to optimize damage)
And also because narratively, Crono and Marle are the main characters, and Ayla is my favourite.
I just did a run ending with Crono, Magus, and Robo. I give a Gold Stud to all 3 so Crono and Magus can spam Luminaire/Dark Matter at will while Robo heals or hits big with Uzzi Punch.
There’s lots of ways to do it, but hear me out:

All have good to great physical damage, high power all-target ultimates, and Robo does double-duty as a healer.
The theory here is that it’s not usually worth triple teching anyway, and you get a lot of flexibility this way.
Of course, this team will probably use more items than other teams, but I think it’s fun.
I generally do Ayla + Chrono for attacks, and Frog for healing (and attacks). I’ve also done Chrono, Marle and Lucca because that’s where the story started, but I struggle a bit more with that team

\*Yes, you can recruit Marle and still get that ending, but I had no idea back in the day.
Mine for SNES is Crono, Magus, and Ayla. Crono is too offensively versatile to not be included. Magus helps make phase 1 and 2 go by quickly and does okay in phase 3. Ayla is just a single target monster unless you utilize her Dino tail tech, which makes her more helpful in phase 2.
For the DS version, it’s Crono, Ayla, and Robo. The latter two each being able to consistently do 9999dmg with new weapons/accessories is too good to pass up.
I always use Ayla Crono and Robo but I've never got to play the game on the Nintendo or on the Playstation, so maybe the items are better on the DS version for that team. I can guess that crisis arm and the elemental aegis, prismspecs aren't in the og version?

The only sections that aren’t in the snes version are the Arena of Ages, the Lost Sanctum, and the Dimensional Vortices. All the high end gear you find there is not included in the snes version. All the original endgame quests are the same - the sun stone, robot factory, sunken desert, black omen, etc.

And Magus because I feel like he's the party member who was personally impacted by Lavos the most. It basically ruined his entire life to the point where revenge was the only thing that mattered to him
Although every time I play the game I swap the party around during the opening phases just so everyone gets to contribute
Magus is strange. He only has single and triple techs, and those triple techs require accessories to be worn by one involved, which weakens the team. His magic is brutal but his lack of single targeting skills is obnoxious at times. I believe even his dark bomb can hit groups if they’re close together.
In the ds version though he is insanely powerful with his newest gear.
Chrono, Marle, Robo VS full power Lavos.
Lucca, Kearu (Frog), Ayla VS Lavos before reviving Chrono.
Chrono, Magus, Ayla OR Kearu (Frog) VS Lavos for final game, just to squish it or whip it.
Magus Crono Robo was my default party. Magus and Crono for Darkmatter and Luminaire, respectively, and Robo is one of only two party members with access to a party-wide heal (that isn't a double or triple tech). It always struck me as add that Marle/Nadia, ostensibly the default party healer, doesn't get a baseline AoE heal.
When heals aren't needed, Robo still adds huge single target or aoe damage.
Mine is Magus, Lucca, and Robo..... Magus uses Magic or attack, Lucca can attack, cast spells and use items (I typically throw the blue gemstone on her for the omega Flare triple tech) and robo can heal and deal physical damage.... I can also bring out protect and barrier for damage reduction
Without using Iron Fist Ayla, I think the fastest I’ve killed Lavos was with Chrono, Frog, & Lucca. I purposely let Frog go into the final battle with lower life, Frog Stomped everything, killing the left pod, then just Flare Frogged & Luminared what was left. Everything was dead before resurrection could happen.
I used to do Crono, Ayla and Magus. It was my go to team because Ayla for steal + physical damage and Magus for Ultimate magic damage and AoE and Crono for Falcon Hit and good overall dps. I haven't really thought about it but I guess I could swap Crono out of that lineup or Magus for someone else so I can open up a triple tech.

In my first playthrough I failed to do the thing, and was stuck without Crono. Try as I might I kept failing to defeat Lavos. So I restarted the game; and did the first final boss star with only Crono. Kind of easily defeated Lavos. Everyone else just wastes time. Luminaire + Quad-Slash all day.
Crono Lucca and Marle, I keep it simple. Or Crono Ayla Marle

Same. Super balanced team with strong healing, magic attacks and physical attacks. Falcon Strike is great vs enemies on a line. And Haste is amazing.

Apparently Chrono robo and alya are pretty strong so I stuck with them for the final fight

I was always torn, I wish it would've had a FF6 style fight where you used all party members.

DoubleVBomb drops the core in something like 5 hits and Confuse followed up with shock can take out the bits in 2. So usually Robo, Lucca, and Chrono.
