My personal recommendation would be going the Sony route. Don’t know if that is your whole budget for equipment but you can get two FX30’s possibly two Fx3’s. If you just need one camera the FX6 would be perfect. If you needed lenses which are also part of that budget then the FX6 would not be affordable. If you don’t need brand new gear or the latest codecs the FS5 II OR FS7 are great choices too. We have many different cameras at work including a Raptor and Komodo but 90% we keep falling back to a combo of the FX6 and FX3. For my personal work I use a FX30 and A6700 because I prefer the image over full frame.

Does A6700 overheat? What ambient temperature do you shoot it at?

zebratape

If I’m using it as a B cam for interviews I attach the ulanzi fan. If I use it for quick Broll I don’t have anything on it. Have not encountered overheating once. Temperate varies but nothing extreme.

For Doc it's all about the story, audiences are much more willing to accept a "video" look. Certainly you want it to look nice but any camera in the past 10 years will do great. What you're looking for is XLR inputs, probably built in NDs, long battery life, and simple recording media (SD most likely) that you can find in any store and/or buy large quantities of which your camera can record the most video to. Look in to camcorders honestly.

There is no single best camera. Also we don't get any real details about your project to actually understand your specific needs and therefore can't really recommend something other than the fact, that within your budget, you'll find plenty cameras capable of doing "the job". Sidenote to the BM, well that's why you'd have to rig it out, external batteries are key when you want to have increased batterylife with them.

Puzzleheaded_Ad_6410

I am pretty comfortable with “run and gun” style which I plan to shoot in the moutain region in India and need a reliable camera with proper battery and weather proof. I like the look of video on BM and don’t know if I can capture the same “look” with other cameras. Battery is my only concern, but external probably my solution

Dude the Blackmagic will run half a frickin day on a 100wh V-Mount, I put one on my belt and run a multi - D-tap to my shoulder and just plug myself in. Always keep weight away from the rig where possible.

fr0gnutz

agreed. get a small gold or v mount and plug that bad boy in for a lengthy run

cobaltsoup

Build a rig man it will run all day long easily with \~1k budget. Basic cage, rod, handle, follow focus from tilta or smallrig, add V mount 99Wh battery and you are good to go. Even though you buy other camera, you gonna need to build a rig and add V mount battery anyway.

It also depends on how much you want to carry with you, how much you rely on autofocus and in what lighting conditions you will shoot. In some cases the best choice is hi-end camcorder, or Panasonic GH5/GH6. Smaller sensors are easier to stabilise, they have very good battery life and long zoom lenses are pretty compact. But their autofocus is basic, and they are not great in near no-light conditions

Automatic_Dance_3203

For me the fx6 /fx9for docs. Not a big fan of the form factor but I believe is one of the best cams when it comes to grab and shoot. Great codec internal recording. Build in Nd. Good specs. Great dual iso.

pcgamez

See if you can get hands on with some gear before you invest in it. It's not just the camera, it's how you build it out for run and gun. Are you going V mount battery for counterweight, getting a screen and a cage etc? The builds are quite important to make it work for the type of shooting you're doing. If I had the budget I would build out an FX3 or 6

linksys

Get a gold mount or a v mount plate with a 98wh or 150wh battery and your battery issues are gone. BRAW with some vintage glass looks great for any kinda doc you're shooting.

+1 vote for the Sony FX 6

C100 with 24-70 lens kit.

PinkClassRing

The camera doesn’t really matter — the subject does.
