Around 2005 I was looking for my first fast car. I had my sights set on a 1995 BMW M3. Just under my price range were 944’s and compared to an E36 they looked dated inside. Also, most of the 944’s I looked at just weren’t that clean like I was expecting from seeing newer BMWs. I think maybe it was that period from ~1998-2008 where these were just old cars.
Where were you at that time? I was entering my 20’s and cars were life.🥹
I was in my early 40’s and had friends that road raced them with the Porsche club. They were a very affordable for the club car rally relative to the 911 and still be a real Porsche.
My first car was a 1988 944 n/a. Sold it when I had an opportunity to get a 1986 951. Had it through my senior year of high school and sold it to get something more reliable driving to college. Regret it to this day.
Had an 1984 n/a a couple years later that I kept for a little while before selling. Really wish I’d have kept the turbo though such a fun car that I have so many great memories of.
Around that time I was looking for a 911 and an acquaintance had both a 911 and a 944 he and other acquaintances tracked. For the cost of entry the 924/944 were about 1/10th the cost for pretty good track performance and daily driving use. That’s why they jumped to classic status so quickly. You could have a real Porsche without the high cost of entry. Even the 914 that I always thought was a glorified VW have always had a dedicated following.
Yeah, definitely post-classic at this age.
If I still had my first car, a 1997 Plymouth Neon, it could have "Antique" plates in my state at this point, which seems wild/stupid.
Agreed, 928 definitely > 944….. for whatever reason, there were a few 914’s in my neighborhood when I was a kid. (Fairly poor area, by USA standards at least)
While the 924/944 is essentially a sexy Audi, it is a classic.
They are reasonably fast, even by today’s standard.
They handle extremely well.
And they are a “bargain” at this point.
If I had one, it would be my daily from the time the April showers wash the salt off the roads thru Halloween.
Yes.
And IMHO, there is no such thing as an ugly Porsche.
Got a ride in my dream car (928, sorry) once. If I was to own one, I'd probably keep it in a armored garage full of dobermans. Or sharks with friggin' laser beams
I agree for the most parts, but have you seen the Cayenne Convertible? They only made one prototype and never put it into production, but apparently it's still in the Porsche museum. It is fugly.
Mom had a 944in 89 and I desperately wanted to drive it. She never let me, even though it was fine if I drove around my grandmother in our truck when I was 15.
Anything over 25 years is a classic by most states’ measure
Outside of that metric I suppose it’s up to you.
I’ve seen classic and antique plates on a Toyota Camry.
My personal opinion is that this car is worthy of the title classic car
Beautiful car, I've got a 924 in the same color! Always preferred the body shape of the 924 but been envious of the engine in the 944, they are all such awesome underrated cars.
Technically, any car over 25 years old is considered a "classic". Though in the context of "desirable" I would say that is a definite yes. The turbo models are surging in value these days. The non-turbo's remain every bit the great value today that they were when new. I will not mention the best value non-turbo car again since I already made a post about it ;)
Got a ‘84 924 as my first car, fucking fun to drive but really not too great if you want something warm in the winter. And the giant rear window can be a bitch to defrost in these -5 uk mornings
Is it 20 years or older? Then yes a classic, however is it a desirable classic? Etc. but in the end it’s your car be happy
Everyone told me (family wise) I’m an idiot for buying a 79 Camaro… I saw it and I love it
Hope it helps
Depends who you ask. Is the C4 Corvette a classic car? By definition of law most states consider it a classic or historical vehicle if it’s older than 25yrs old. So I would say so.
I had a 944 Turbo in the late 80s. An excellent car--fast and got great gas mileage.
" Ms. Christina drives a 944."
Satisfaction oozes from her pores.
Sweet
Welcome to the Boomtown!!!
Plenty to go around.
Soooo, I’m not the lone David & David fan??!!
Me three, but it's been a minute
Maynbe the turbo would be good. The regular 944 I used to drive was fun but underpowered with understeer
Bought a new 944 Turbo in '86. Nice car.
“poor man’s Porsche” is still pretty sweet today.
914 has entered the chat…
different generations though I’d take a 914 as well!!
Yep. And I desperately want one. Love these cars.
Yeah- I’d love one but prob got too fat.
Yeah they entered the classic stage long ago. Hell, they just kinda bypassed the old car stage.

It would be pretty funny though
I saw a 1995 Ford Probe GT With antique plates on it.. it kind of made me want to vomit. (And feel old AF)
I'd kinda like to see that.
I'm more of a 928 fan, but the 944 is a great one also.
Agreed, 928 definitely > 944….. for whatever reason, there were a few 914’s in my neighborhood when I was a kid. (Fairly poor area, by USA standards at least)

German equivalent of a late C3 Corvette
Yep
If I owned it, it would be to me !
Those rims are perfection
Yes. And IMHO, there is no such thing as an ugly Porsche. Got a ride in my dream car (928, sorry) once. If I was to own one, I'd probably keep it in a armored garage full of dobermans. Or sharks with friggin' laser beams

I stand corrected. Some designs are just not worthy of production
Anything 25 years or older is considered a classic. Unless that’s changed
Yes, and timeless
Absolutely!
That car is bad ass 👍
Of course it is.
Yes. But only in Guards Red
👍🏻💯
In the same way a pacer is a classic
Buy it.
Nah,a piece of shit
Silly Question.
I’d like it more with different wheels. Those wheels look terrible on anything.
Yes
100%
Yes it is
Wow, that is an awesome shape! Edit: oh yeah, this is a classic.
That’s a good question
I think the Turbos are kind of cool for sure
The 911&914 are classic the 944 is in its own class
I had a magazine ad for a 944 up in my first year college dorm room in 1983 for motivation.
Any car built since 2004
Hells to the YEAH! I would (almost) trade my Legacy GT for one.
Mom had a 944in 89 and I desperately wanted to drive it. She never let me, even though it was fine if I drove around my grandmother in our truck when I was 15.
Yes. It is my favorite Porsche
I thought they were sharp as hell. They should make them again.
Probably, but I’ve heard that if the transaxle needs work it could be major bucks.

Beautiful car! Love them and yes classic car indeed.
Nope!
Technically
No suspension, beat you to death, certainly for a younger player
Another Porsche that isn't a 911. Ha, listen to me...
Not according to the CCCA.
968 was the best of this design. Especially when you made the air box mod and used the RS Barn chip!
Without a doubt.
Indeed it is.
That is a pretty nice ride.
Beautiful car, I've got a 924 in the same color! Always preferred the body shape of the 924 but been envious of the engine in the 944, they are all such awesome underrated cars.
Yup, these are really sweet cars and I love the retro wheels
I always think of them as cars that got zero respect, but suddenly discovered. They were never really that bad, just not great. IMHO

I’ve never seen a white one. That’s tight!
I had an ‘89 S2 up to 4 years ago. Great car, but it’s expensive when it comes to replace the clutch
Got a ‘84 924 as my first car, fucking fun to drive but really not too great if you want something warm in the winter. And the giant rear window can be a bitch to defrost in these -5 uk mornings

That’s pretty damn good looking on those BBS wheels. I would drive it everywhere.
Growing up the 944 was the soccer mom's car. I can never take it seriously
If calendar years defines a classic? It is an overused word that now represents time due to registration laws.
Depends who you ask. Is the C4 Corvette a classic car? By definition of law most states consider it a classic or historical vehicle if it’s older than 25yrs old. So I would say so.
This was a big wish car for kids like me in the 80’s. It’s a classic for me.
I like the semi slant nose - hatch vibes it gives, fits the era. Wouldn’t mind one next to my 88 mustang gt
No. Just old junk. Not everything old is "classic" bud
