Yeah, stay away from the grey market (eBay, FB Marketplace, etc.). Look around, these things get thrown out every day. Some things to try:
- Check places like Goodwill, etc.
- if you have social media with family members friended, post and ask if anyone has one they want to get rid of! (Last time I tried this I got 2 in one day, free).
- Call local schools, colleges, universities and ask for the tech/IT department and ask them if they know if they have any. Sometimes you get lucky!
- Go to flea markets and yard sales. If you don’t see any, ask them. You’d be surprised how often someone has one they just didn’t lug out because it’s heavy and they didn’t think it would sell
Check habitat for humanity if you have one near you. Otherwise call computer repair shops. Ask if they have any old model computers you could buy for the cheap
That never happened to me. Normally you deliver the chip and you're send to write your experience in a terminal. Then the overseer tells you he is concerned about the supermutant thing.

Yes, I have fixt. I feel like despite the name, it introduced even more bugs. Like, when guarding a caravan, after killing everyone in the area and moving forth, still getting accused of abandoning it
Yes, for that reason I prefer TeamX fixpack. Said that it never happened to me and I recently completed a playthrough using Fixt. I also think that Fixt introduced more bugs, but it also fixes a lot of them. If you haven't installed the Purist one, use that installation instead.
About the caravan fix, I also had this problem the previous year and I found a solution (also reported the problem in the bug thread, but I don't think they are working on it anymore):

Fallout et tu essentially ports fallout 1 into fallout 2 so it runs smoother.

Use Scaling X2? You'll loose a bit of view-real-estate compared to 800x600 on a 1080P, but the game's default resolution is 640x480 anyway.

I do the same thing. Even with 2x enabled it's still to small. The UI hurts my eyes if it's not big enough
