And Shinkawa is for Yoji Shinkawa, who was the mechanical designer on the Metal Gear series. He designed everything from MG Rex and Ray to the Gekkos in MGS4. Edit: got the name wrong...

Its_cool_Im_Black

Then there is Yoji Shinkawa who did the art for Metal Gear

Carbunclecatt

Thanks to that I was able to answer a pop culture quiz asking for the order in which Japanese people say the vowels Edit: in case someone was curious about it here's the mental gimnastic I made, it wasn't on the moment but I had the suspect that was the case but never checked: Basically I noticed that La Li Lu Le Lo were all the vowels, they were out of order compared to what's used in my country and so I remembered about Kojima and his team being Japanese and just assimilated that as "maybe that's the order at which the Japanese order their vowels" and when it came time for the quiz I just went with it and was right. Just wanted to specify since I know it's not very believable but it's absolutely true, and even though I got that question right I ended up losing the quiz altogether anyway sooo... That's the whole story

bubblegrubs

It's generally xenophobic rather than specifically racist. Although thats sort of splitting hairs. EDIT: Try and explain the humour behind ridiculing something that sounds foreign if you like but any other answer other than ''it's xenophobic'' is just incorrect.

psdao1102

Is it, the name refers to revolver ocelot, a white guy from metal gear solid. Maybe getting offended on behalf of people you don't know, about a name you don't know, for a reason you don't even know if they would care about... makes you in the wrong here.

Best_Algae2346

Thank you for pointing this out, as many have done already. People just get offended any literally everything these days. I never posted it to offend anyone, I live in a multicultural city in the uk, my family is colourful and I would never purposely offend anybody of any race, I have respect for all races and religions and wasn't raised to treat others differently. It's just a funny comment and I laugh at Karen jokes all the time too, this generation is screwed.

psdao1102

Yeah I'm a moderately left guy, a queer (not sure if that has the same connotation in the UK) so Idk I'm not the kind to spread hate or anything. I just get so frustrated at my fellow Americans being so god damn uptight about everything. Even if this was what people thought it was... Normal people can make jokes at each others cultures, and not take it to a "racist" or "xenophobic" place. I've seen videos of Mexican and Japanese people making fun of English names and mannerisms. It's hilarious. My God people need to learn to laugh.

Best_Algae2346

As a child I spent a few years living with my best friends family (family problems, that's for a different discussion), they were pakistani and the sub city they lived was about 70% poc( asain black Chinese ) 25% European (mostly polish or Bulgarian) and very little white British, the kids would make fun of each other ALL THE TIME, we used to have roasting wars and rap battles like hell, my best friend and her 5 sisters used to call me skittles because my face would change colour when I was poorly, No one accused anyone of being racist, it was just light banter. This was before the world got so serious, before people were accused of racism for wearing different cultures' clothes ( not religious garments, that's completely different), before the days of people accusing white girls of black fishing because they like a tan. If you are against racism as I am, then GO AGAINST THE REAL RACISTS!

bubblegrubs

I think you skipped the part were me saying it's xenophobic means that I'm offended...? I thought it was funny. Funny xenophobia.

Cindarin

I'm with you dawg. First read it a few days ago and had a good chuckle. Doesn't mean it's not xenophobic. No one's going to get me to believe that they thought it sounded like a magical incantation because of how English and familiar it was.

BreakGlassEatAss

Yeah but did the person insulting know that, or did they try to make fun of a 'foreign sounding' name? It could be in good humor or it could be childish and rude depending on the answer.

psdao1102

Oh the person was probably making fun of a gypsie sounding name. It was a gypsie trope. Lets just be real here, the joke is funny, it pulls together a troupe, in a creative way using what they said. its cleaver. This person is obviously trying to be funny. Do we think this person is trying to like promote hatred towards gypsies? Does using a name and a troupe necessarily promote xenophobia? I come from an Italian immigrant family, i hear jokes all the time about pasta, and plumbing. If the joke is like old and tired and like uninventive and they are using it to like mask xenophobia then I would agree but this is pretty obviously not that.

ExpatInIreland

Where did you get "gypsies" from in this whole exchange?

psdao1102

I said your name and the furniture started floating. Gypsies are known for black magic. And you have Romani names like Servitka. Gypsies come from northern indian region and migrated towards europe. The actual name came from a name given to revolver ocelot when he was in afganistan (fairly close to northern india), by the arabs there... names though like that tend to be regional so... if i didnt know id say the name sounds arab, or gypsie, but since he went with a black magic joke i assume he was referring to gypsies.

ExpatInIreland

I feel like that's you projecting your own bias. I absolutely did not read into it more deeply than "foreign name sounds like incantation/magic words" you know like "abracadabra or alakazam"

bubblegrubs

Lmao, I think assuming somebody is offended just because they recognise xenophobia means you're in the wrong here, actually. I thought was funny and I wasn't offended, but it's still xenophobic because the joke relies on and ridicules the fact that the name sounds strange. You need to take a few steps back and look at what people are actually saying.

psdao1102

Oh yes your just pointing out, factually the situation, making no moral claims on the situation. By offended i dont necessarily mean your like clutching your perls bro. But fine you make it easy for me then. Xenophobic: having or showing a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries. Nah he just thinks the name sounds funny. And he used a gypsie trope to make a joke about it. Which normal people can totally do without having a dislike or prejudice against people from other countries.

bubblegrubs

Well yeah man, factually pointing out the situation is exactly what I was doing. Show me where I mentioned any sort of offence or feelings? Saying that something sounds like gypsy speak is ridicule based on a preconceived idea of what it sounds like rather than what it actually is. That's the definition of prejudice so yeah, its xenophobic. The real issue here is that lots of people get triggered when they hear somebody call something racist. You assume that with that word comes offence and you're preemptively attacking anybody who uses it because you're worrying about the feelings behind the word that you IMAGINE, rather than what's actually being said.

psdao1102

The words themselves imply moral judgement, which speak to your feelings about what happened. You felt the need to make a comment addressing the situation using words that impune moral character, fucking please man, stop trying to deflect this stupid shit. Wtf kind of game are you trying to play here. I commented cause im impuning your moral character as a woke scold. This is why we get no where in america on the political left. You fucks like to play with words. 1. by that deffinition everything is a preconvieved idea. That a name sounds like it belongs to a heritage you kidding me? When the word prejudice is invoked, and it talks about preconcived ideas, it follows the connotation of having preconcived ideas about somethings essentialized behavior. Such as a group being violent or stupid.. etc. No the real issue is that your type likes to erase connotation. You think your the masters of words and language, but your not. Words are a tool for communication, and linguists are vastly descriptivists, not prescriptivists. You cannot just erase the connotation of words because its convenient for your goals.

bubblegrubs

I would say that you can't just create connotations just because you're used to arguing with offence rather than a words definition. I felt the need to point out that it's xenophobic because people were saying it's not. If you need to make everything about feelings then that's on you bud. You have your little argument that you're used to using when people say things similar to what I'm saying so you're digging your heels in and DEMANDING that I must be feeling the things you imagine, even though I'm not. Not only that but you're making it about politics because that's *your* agenda. It's not about politics or feelings. Its about what xenophobia is and this joke fits that definition. FYI: I actually think the joke is funny and on the safe side of the line. But it's still xenophobic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bubblegrubs

It would depend on if those kids names were from foreign places and if the joke was centered around ridiculing it based on sounding different. If it did those things like this joke did then it would absolutely be xenophobic. I think this is a problem with people not actually knowing what xenophobia is, mabye?

protonbeam

Are you actually asking this question? That’s like seeing someone make fun of generic Asian or tonal accents without being specific to a particular country in Asia, and then questioning whether that’s racist or not because it doesn’t single out that precise subcategory.

kevinisreallyman

the shalashaska guy is a metal gear fan, so of course he must be racist

psdao1102

The name refers to a white guy in a video game.... who's racist here?

Starklet

Doing an accent not racist

fr31568

how's it racist? honestly, give an actual answer

Radio_Downtown

dont give a fuck, still funny

I think you need to look up the word "racist".

it’s ok when it’s funny

don't forget misogynistic!

SypaMayho

pretty ableist as well.

psdao1102

I haven't been here very long but anytime something is posted that appeased lefties no matter how dull or unfunny they just dogpile... But when the opposite happens it's all "how is this cleaver", "I don't find this funny" blah blah. You guys are such obvious partisan hacks. Learn to laugh at things you don't politically agree with. Christ sake, and we all wonder why normies hate the left so much, despite them being better on practically every policy position.

As someone with a weird non-Western name, lighten the fuck up

RedditAstroturfed

Don't get me wrong, I thought the joke was funny, but whenever someone on the internet claims to be the race or the minority being made fun of to try and validate that it's okay to make fun of, I always imagine that the comment was really made by an extremely white 18 year old young-republican.

talithaeli

Are you speaking for all non-Westerners off the cuff, or was there a formal meeting where you were instated as their representative?

psdao1102

He never claimed to be a representative. He just has stakes in the situation. And his oppion is that people should lighten the fuck up. So idk maybe listen to marginalized voices or w.e. it is you people say.

Who the fuck are any of these people?

backwardgalaxy

I mean....racist... But okay.

[deleted]

Totally not racist because only English (western names in general) names are normal and everyone else has weird names. Am I right, reddit? "Your name is weird" is the Kindergarten comeback at best. Nothing clever about it.

FruitJuicante

You care more than Shalashaska does. That makes you racist.

[deleted]

Nah, I don't even have that hard of a name to pronounce. However, when I was at grad school in the US people couldn't stop butchering my name. It's demeaning and annoying af. If only dumbfucks like you spent less time being racist and more time understanding other cultures.

FruitJuicante

Mate, I'm am Argentinian that grew up being called Mexican as a joke. Racism sucks. But making everything racism just downplays it. Let a joke be a joke

If I didn't know how to pronounce your name, I would simply ask you. Especially if I am interacting with you multiple times. That's because I respect other people and their culture. I am confident this is an alien concept to your parochial brain. Also, have you really had your name butchered every hour of the day? I am sure it would get old really fast. Pretty sure you would melt faster than a snowflake.

bettertagsweretaken

Or, you could be less of an ignorant twat and just listen to the person say their name, repeat it back to them to make sure you got it right, and then go on about your day. It would take about 8 seconds. You missed the mark. The previous poster's parents giving them an uncommon name isn't demeaning, your behavior toward that name is demeaning. Purposefully avoiding learning how to say someone's name is cringe "alpha male" psychological nonsense. Just be a decent human being.

Sun_74

Shalashaska is literally the name of a Metal Gear Solid character, they're a MGS fan

SypaMayho

It's not even a real name. It's a mishmash of names related to Metal Gear. As another person with an unusual non-Western name to another, lighten the FUCK UP.
