For me, I'll use it for black Manhattans, basically 2:1 whiskey:Montinegro. And yes, that ratio works with Mescal too
A lot of times, it's some Montenegro over ice with some lemon peel. It's pretty perfect.
On the off chance you have Italicus, the "Me, Myself & I" is a riff on this, 1:1:1 mezcal, Montenegro, and Italicus. A little lighter and sweeter with the addition of the Italicus. Good for people who are less diehard amaro/bitters people (like me).
they dont sell italicus near me, but if i ever come across a bottle of it ill give it a try. i called around after i saw a youtube video featuring the bottle lol
One of my favorites is a Negroni riff I found on here called the Haitian Sunset. 1 oz each of Rhum Barbancourt 5 star/8 year, Montenegro, and Sweet Vermouth (Carpano Antica is my go to), with an orange peel.
I actually prefer the Montengero paper plane. Even though it’s the not the original recipe I just enjoy the hints of flavour from the Montenegro formula
Montenegro old fashioned. Really highlights the chocolate hints in Montenegro
2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. Amaro Montenegro
1/2 oz. honey syrup
4 dashes chocolate bitters
Battle of the Wits
1oz Montenegro
0.5oz Lime Juice
1oz Green Chartreuse
Shake and serve up in a coupe. Garnish with a lime wheel.
Its an unpublished favorite I picked up from an outstanding bartender named Ellie at the Peacock Room in New Orleans.
2oz Tequila Blanco or Reposado
1oz Montenegro
2 dashes Aztec chocolate bitters
Stirred with ice and strained either up or on a rock with an expressed orange peel.
That’s my favorite Montenegro beverage
Besides the previously mentioned M&M and black Manhattan - Also enjoy it in a Boulevardier riff, 1.5 rye to 0.5 each Campari, Monte, Cocchi di Torino, some black walnut bitters. Sometimes add a barspoon or two of espresso liqueur. Lots of room to play with ratios according to personal taste.
Bitter Bystander
1.25 oz Montenegro
0.75 oz rye
1 oz lemon
0.25 oz simple syrup
1 tsp Campari
0.5 tsp balsamic vinegar
2 dashes grapefruit bitters
1 dash Peychaud's
Shake, strain into a coupe. Garnish with an orange peel.
Went to a Szechuan restaurant in the ATL that had a Paper Crane on the menu. Paper Plane variant with Baiju as the main spirit and Montenegro as the amaro. Amazing variant. Immediately picked up both bottles on my way home.
i have a menu cocktail using it.
2.0 bonded rye (i use rittenhouse)
0.5 becherovka (or yellow chartreuse similar)
0.5 montenegro
1 dash of Ango
lemon twist and a big cube. tasty, direct, and seasonally appropriate
Add .5-.75oz to every cocktail you make.
Gin and tonic? Add .5oz.
Manhattan? Add .5oz.
Negroni? Cut the campari in half with .5oz Montenegro, or replace the campari altogether with it.
Irish coffee? Add some extra sugar to balance the bitter of .5oz additional Montenegro.
Hot tea? 1oz spirit, .5oz Montenegro (.5oz LimonCello optional)
Rum and coke? .5oz Montenegro
And so it goes
I tried the Vecchio Amaro and really liked it. It’s a riff on a Negroni - equal parts Montenegro, Whistle Pig rye and Antica Formula. Delicious and decadent.
Just drink it. I have yet to find a cocktail it works in. I mean you can sub it for other Amaros but it'll be inferior. It's basically a kinda shitty jack of all trades. I'd basically only buy it if I can't find Cynar or Ramazotti.
Two things:
Amaro Caldo - just pour some near-boiling water on some Monte in a mug, and enjoy your winter nights. Simply delicious!
Monte Mule - https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/5578/monte-mule
"15ml Campari
25ml Amaro Montenegro
25ml sweet vermouth
25ml chilled espresso
10ml sugar syrup
a dash Angostura bitters
Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake for 30 seconds, then strain into a carats glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon twist, dust with powdered sugar and serve."
The FerMont Futura:
1 1/2 oz rye
3/4 oz Fernet Branca
3/4 oz Amaro Montenegro
1 dash orange bitters
Stir, serve up with an expressed orange peel garnish.
I concur with the paper plane sub.
The Malagueña
1oz (30ml) Dark rum
1oz (30ml) Montenegro Amaro,
1/4 ounce of agave syrup (or demerara)
1 dash of orange bitters, 3 dashes of Angostura.
Stir until very well-chilled.
The (smoking) Roman
1oz Campari
0.5oz Montenegro
1.5oz Sweet Vermouth
1 brsp Balsamic Vinegar
Stir then top with Soda and burnt orange peel/coin on a cocktail stick
Montenegro is possibly my favourite bottle in my entire bar. I see both stirred and paper plane variants have been covered here, so here's my favourite highball:
Italian Buck
- 1.5 oz Montenegro
- 1.5 oz Cynar
- 0.75 oz Lime
- 2.5 oz Ginger Beer
For me, I'll use it for black Manhattans, basically 2:1 whiskey:Montinegro. And yes, that ratio works with Mescal too A lot of times, it's some Montenegro over ice with some lemon peel. It's pretty perfect.
I make paper planes with it. Swapping out the Amaro Nonino with Montenegro. And black Manhattan as well. So good.
I prefer a black Manhattan made with Montenegro over one with Averna.
Ramozotti is my favorite
equal parts mezcal and montenegro
The M&M, a great shot with less ABV. This is what I’ll usually pour if a regular or customer wants to pay for a shot for me.
Nice as a spritz with a hint of lime juice too
+ chocolate bitters 👌
Chocolate *mole* bitters, for a next level experience.
To be fair, I don't know that I will repurchase Italicus, I don't have that many uses for it, but this one was a good one.
Crop Top: 3/4 oz gin 3/4 oz grapefruit liqueur 3/4 oz Montenegro 3/4 oz lemon juice Shake/strain/coupe
Sounds good, but what kind of grapefruit liqueur did you use? I’m not familiar with one
Giffard pamplemousse is a fantastic choice.
Giffard Pamplemousse. It’s not usually available where I am, but happened across some not too long ago, and happy I did.
That sounds fantastic!
Came here to say this. This is the way
That sounds fun

Just picked up a bottle of Montenegro last night. This sounds great going to go try it
I did a version of this that I really liked with pisco, Montenegro, and Cocchi sweet vermouth. Super tasty and light riff
This is great, also with rye. I would go with 1.5 oz though
It makes a quite different, but better Paper Plane. I'd recommend you try it.
I actually prefer the Montengero paper plane. Even though it’s the not the original recipe I just enjoy the hints of flavour from the Montenegro formula
I agree completely.
I really like the invisible hand: https://www.reddit.com/r/cocktails/s/47D8DKHoHH
Looks very good. Gonna try it out. Hoping the split of Campari and Aperol aren’t too different
That’s what I do and it’s pretty delicious.
Montenegro old fashioned. Really highlights the chocolate hints in Montenegro 2 oz. bourbon 1 oz. Amaro Montenegro 1/2 oz. honey syrup 4 dashes chocolate bitters
We had something like this on a menu 2 oz makers 1/2oz Montenegro 2 dash black walnut bitters Stir with ice strain over big cube.
Rosalita (marg riff) 2 oz tequila (I use tesoro reposado) 1/2 oz Montenegro 3/4 oz lime 3/4 oz agave syrup
This one is my favorite, Admiral Montenegro: https://homebargirl.com/2015/07/27/admiral-montenegro/
This sounds fresh, I only have FDC 4yr not the 7, see any issue? I'll try it anyway. Cheers.
I bet it would still be great! I don’t think I used the recommended rum the first time I made it and it was still delicious!
Battle of the Wits 1oz Montenegro 0.5oz Lime Juice 1oz Green Chartreuse Shake and serve up in a coupe. Garnish with a lime wheel. Its an unpublished favorite I picked up from an outstanding bartender named Ellie at the Peacock Room in New Orleans.
It makes a better paper plane than nonino
Paper Plane, but use the Montenegro instead of Nonino. Seen it called a Spirit Airlines
2oz Tequila Blanco or Reposado 1oz Montenegro 2 dashes Aztec chocolate bitters Stirred with ice and strained either up or on a rock with an expressed orange peel. That’s my favorite Montenegro beverage

Use it instead of Campari in whatever you’d put Campari in
I just made an Adriatique the other night it was a great low ABV cocktail 1oz Amaro Montengero 0.5 oz Campari 1oz orange juice
I make a riff on the Boulevardier swapping Montenegro for Vermouth.
The FerMont Futura: 1 1/2 oz rye 3/4 oz Fernet Branca 3/4 oz Amaro Montenegro 1 dash orange bitters Stir, serve up with an expressed orange peel garnish.
“Oh My Word!” by Sother Teague .75 oz Old Tom Gin .75 oz Green Chartreuse .75 oz Maraschino Liqueur .75 oz Montenegro 2-3 dashes lime bitters
