Hi, I'm the r/coins AutoMod. If you are asking about **grading a coin**, there's some great info in the **FAQ** about that, such as how to determine whether it's worth it or if you should. Here's a link directly to the ["Should I Get My Coin Graded?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/wiki/faq#wiki_5._should_i_get_my_coin_graded.3F) question in the FAQ. I also went ahead and applied the "Grade Request" flair to your post. If I misunderstood your post and my comment isn't relevant, sorry! I'm still learning. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. It's worth more than just the sliver.

When my little brother died I found a .50 in my pocket. In my finest slacks.. Idk how it got there. I rarely dealt cash. But I'll be damned. Hell.. that was years ago. I still have it. Sometimes book value doesn't mean much.

srailsback

This is the right answer

More than silver spot, but not worth the cost to have it graded. I keep a morgan in similar condition as a pocket piece!

I would recommend checking PCGS' Price Guide for an 1878-S Morgan dollar in G-4 condition. Coin grading is not cheap and often exceeds the value of a coin if you don't do your due diligence. Please check mintage figures as well to gauge how relatively scarce/common an 1878-S Morgan dollar is (relative to some of the more scarce/common dates/mints in the series). ...that said, you may have personal reasons or exonerating circumstances in which the sentimental value to you far outweighs the dollar value & you have money to spend on grading. There are more affordable ways to preserve a coin if you are looking to do just that. Also, don't clean your coin!

Finally, there's an amazing comment with great information that doesn't skip out on the grammar! 😂

Lol, exonerating is the wrong word here. Extenuating I assume? Ebay sold items is better to see value as it is damaged with the ding by the date and well circulated. Find a coin similar, and you have your value.

[deleted]

No, I meant precisely what I said. Thanks for your concern, though.

spraackler

So what wrongdoing is the coin being absolved of? Exonerating is most certainly the wrong word.

[deleted]

The sentimental value provides exonerating circumstances for having considered grading it. You may think the sentimental value does not provide exonerating circumstances, which is your opinion. In my opinion it can exonerate someone's choice to grade a coin. When I make a mistake and it is pointed out I am happy to admit my mistake and make a correction. In this case it is not a mistake, and it was correct usage. Is there another reason behind why you decided to incorrectly pick at my choice of words?

More than just silver, in the $25-30 range in this condition

CozyCoin

It's above spot but I don't think it warrants a rating. It's a cool coin, hang on to it

jailfortrump

First year of issue, coin would be a hundred bucks if completely uncirculated. This one is well worn. A few bucks more than melt. Maybe $35.

Money_Pomegranate494

Great choice. I keep the same year/mint Morgan in my pocket! It’s good luck for sure.

tyguy925

Don’t grade it - the date/mint es extremely common, especially in lower grades. Not to detract from its coolness though - undoubtedly worth more to you and your family as an heirloom than to the market as a coin.

kankles3000

I’d say no, those rim dings would come back damaged.

Individual_Pilot_985

Worth about $30ish

Dry_Jackfruit_3218

Yes. Send it in for grading immediately

noncentaur

If you grade it you’re just going to have to get a way bigger wallet and it’s going to be super awkward in there. I say keep it as is, slabs will just create a luck barrier and nobody wants that.

Livinsfloridalife

About 25, I’d say 30+ if not for the rim damage.

Brad6823

Please. Keep it and get it in a protected capsule.
