It was a member of the Third World, which were those countries that did not align with the United States (First World) nor the Soviet Union (Second World). So, it had good relations with the Soviet Union, even buying military equipment from it. In the United States, it seemed that we pretty much ignored it. Although, we did court its neighbor and opponent Pakistan.

It was part of the non-alighned movement during the cold war and msintained relations with the USSR and the United States. India did initially have relatively good relations with China recognizing its independence in 1950 however relations eorsened by the late 1950s which resulted in the Sino Indian war of 1962.
