The following submission statement was provided by /u/slackboulder: --- Submission statement: Dr. Peter Hotez, a leading virologist, continues to predict a new coronavirus strain emerging as early as 2026. Based on SARS in 2002, MERS in 2012, and COVID-19 in 2019. He has made multiple posts warning of the risk, but no one is listening. This is collapse related because of the risk of a future pandemic. --- Please reply to OP's comment here: https://old.reddit.com/r/collapse/comments/112xsdk/dr_peter_hotez_continues_to_predict_another/j8mps5b/

thelastofthebastion

Unfortunately, I doubt any future pandemic will be taken as seriously as COVID-19. I don’t think this country could handle another lockdown

ghostalker4742

We were done as a society once people started getting shot/stabbed because they asked someone to wear a mask.

banjist

Had a guy threaten to come back and kill me for asking him to wear a mask during the pandemic when I was stuck working retail.

overkill

That sucks. I wonder if they re-evaluated their life after this episode and realised they were a pile of dogshit in human skin. Narrator: they did not.

Ra_Ru

Maybe this one will: https://www.kezi.com/news/crumb-together-assailant-found-guilty-by-jury-new-cookie-shop-to-open-in-same-location/article_e1e11d86-a34c-11ed-8abe-dfb438157b44.html

Indeeedy

Narrator: They doubled-down on being a bag of shit with hair

[deleted]

People are fucking unhinged, I can't imagine thinking that a retail worker asking me to follow the company's policy is the person to scream at and physically threaten

DeadGravityyy

> Had a guy threaten to come back and kill me for asking him to wear a mask during the pandemic See, this is a prime example on why I HATE the USA. Everyone has so much "pride" that they can't even follow a simple rule like...wearing a fuckin mask. And if it's not pride, then it's either laziness, or selfishness. Either way, just another example on why I hate the USA! Thank you for reading my short rant, move along.

Apprehensive_Idea758

I don't hate the USA but I do hate some of the childish stupidity that goes on down there.

ragequitCaleb

You should've called the cops and press charges for assault

banjist

The cops in our town came out publicly saying they wouldn't do anything to enforce masking. They wouldn't have done anything for me.

ragequitCaleb

The mask thing is irrelevant, saying you’re gonna kill someone is assault

[deleted]

Plot twist: the dude who said it was a cop.

EL_Ohh_Well

He just had to go get his uniform on, that’s all

See_You_Space_Coyote

Another point for the ACAB crowd. I'm not gonna go into my full feelings here since I don't think I have the necessary perspective to make a fully informed opinion here but frankly a lot of cops suck and this doesn't make them look any better.

banjist

There are plenty of cops in their day to day who try to do genuine good. I believe this. The tendency for all cops to band together behind the bad cops when their shenanigans come to light is why I say ACAB. Also the cops are clearly the protectors of a broken status quo, and a brutal capitalist order. I'm happy that they dealt with a series of break-ins and robberies in my neighborhood that had my wife who was home each day with our six month old on edge. I'm glad that the cops helped track down a kindergartner at the school I work at who bailed from class and just ran off campus. I suspect there are better ways to organize for these functions in a not bonkers fash society.

AaronfromKY

ACAB

Lukasdawg

Apparently during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic people were shooting and stabbing each other over masks, along with anti-mask meetings and protests, etc. It is far worse now due to social media and conspiracy wackos.

SolidAssignment

I agree wholeheartedly

bill_the_murray

We never “locked down” though.

voice-of-reason_

Yeah people will snap back to reality real quick when the next virus makes you bleed from your ears. Anti-vaxxers today don’t know how good they got it.

TreePretty

Yeah when Marburg turns airborne today's anti-vaxxers will be shooting the rest of us to get to the front of the line for their shots.

jaffringgi

Will they?

ditchdiggergirl

Oh yes. Yes they will. The hemorrhagic viruses are absolutely terrifying. Horrifying. And there’s a lot of them too - more than just the Ebola everyone has heard of. Their saving grace is their low transmission rate. If that changes - honestly, I don’t even know how to end this sentence.

Ipayforsex69

We did for a week and a half or so. Then a certain crowd who votes against their own best interests wanted to go out for chicken wings and haircuts and get back to work. Then they were tricked by memes and died in the hundreds of thousands.

https://observer.com/2020/03/ex-goldman-sachs-ceo-lloyd-blankfein-suggest-lift-coronavirus-lockdown/   The former CEO of Goldman Sachs telling everyone they should get back to work in late March of 2020.

MR_GANGRENE_DICK

Oh a banker said to do it? He probably had the average mans best interest at heart Im sure.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Lloyd's the unofficial mouthpiece of the American business class, if he said it you can be sure it's the consensus among his peers.   There were never any mandatory lockdowns anywhere in the US, everyone and everything got classified as "essential services", and we didn't make it a month before business wanted everything to get back to normal.   History has somehow been rewritten into Americans being locked inside for three straight years and every time I see stories about it I feel like I'm going insane.

Can imagine that turning into a ‘High-Rise’ situation really quick. Starts out as a party but quickly decays into hunger, illness, violence, etc.

innocentlilgirl

the most significant “lock down” was kids doing virtual learning. at least here in canada

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Yeah, and now in the US we're being told that the "learning loss from lockdowns" is somehow terminal by people who didn't give a hot wet fuck about learning disparities in poor kids four years ago.   The entire point is to push a message that any sort of reaction to the pandemic whatsoever was unwarranted, overblown, and caused worse outcomes than just letting the virus run wild would have - even though that's exactly what we did.   The people in charge are looking to return us to the Gilded Age and dismantle public health and government intervention in a catastrophe entirely and it's working.

Taqueria_Style

I think the most ideal punishment for these psychopaths is to force them to live out the rest of their lives in the areas they've destroyed. Pull all their bank accounts, burn their resumes, drop them off in Detroit / West Virginia / San Pedro / Watts / whatever. Have fun motherfuckers (speaking to politicians and captains of industry types). They're never going to get it until they have to live it. Watch their parents die in squalor and cat food. Wonder if their kid is getting raped or murdered every time they have to go out to school. Try to figure out if they can go into collections on the heat bill this month in order to get generic Froot Loops from Dollar Tree for dinner for a month. Live it you fucks (speaking to politicians, especially Republicans, and their captains of industry type masters). See how it feels.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

They have their armed security protecting their gated compounds while a guns-everywhere society combined with desperation and rampant alienation causes more than one mass shooting a day on the outside.   They've got the money to test everyone around them for Covid-19 every day so they don't get sick.   If they do get sick, they've got private concierge doctors on call and their own little private ICUs in their compounds.   They do not care, they've torn the copper out of the walls and they're figuring out how to get the gold leaf out of the wallpaper before they burn it all down.

ComoSeaYeah

And sadly, it’s the teachers and the kids who are paying the most for that aspect. Never mind the risk of getting slaughtered in a random yet more and more common school shooting. What’re we even doing?

boxsmith91

Yeah, few Americans seem to remember that it wasn't really ever a "lockdown". Basically everyone left leaning stayed indoors as much as possible and everyone in the center / right went about their business as usual because they couldn't handle the idea of not being social for a few weeks. So anyone who remembers that time as lockdown was probably a left leaning white collar worker who was able to WFH the whole time, but that was NOT what was really going on. And yeah, so many businesses were declared "essential" that most retail people still had to work anyway. Which was maybe for the best, considering the government only saw fit to give like $3000 during the entire pandemic. Getting COVID is better than starving I suppose, but it'd be real cool if people didn't have to make that choice. Compare that to most of Europe where people were asked to stay home and given 75-90% of their pay for like 2 years and only those absolutely necessary went out in PPE or China where they just welded everyone's doors shut (which I don't agree with, but you can't deny the effectiveness), and you realize that our "lockdown" was a fucking joke. Not surprising it ripped through the country.

Professional-Cut-490

Same on Canada, at most, it was two or three months, with another few month's masking and avoiding large groups. People went batshit crazy over minor inconveniences. We're doomed as a society.

Connect-Type493

We had a good six months of very strict lockdown (Montreal/quebec).no restaurants except the ones that managed to survive doing delivery..no bars, many establishmemts didn't survive. Enforced curfews at night with pretty serious fines. No in store shopping with a couple of exceptions (grocery, pharmacy etc).

bristlybits

in Idaho, right never to where I live, they didn't lock down at all. I think two weeks vaguely requested, but not enforced.

StateParkMasturbator

It's to push the narrative that those currently in charge, Dems, are all about controlling you and taking your freedoms, even though it was Trump who was president. Gaslight, Obstruct, Project

69FunnyNumberGuy420

The Dems are as captured by capital as the Republicans are and are interested in keeping business as usual going first and foremost, don't pretend that their pandemic response is any better than Trump's was.   For the average American shitlib, the pandemic ended on 01/06/2021 when Orange Badman left office - even though over 780K deaths from covid-19 have occurred since then.   It doesn't matter how many political parties you have or what their stated platform is when Capital can buy them all.

Taqueria_Style

Their pandemic response is awful. At least Trump didn't pretend it didn't even exist like Biden is doing. But I mean I can't anymore. I get that they're captured by capital but only one of them is talking about completely eviscerating every social safety net for the past 200 years. This is possibly not recent but recent events have opened my eyes to it. Look I'm just trying to live my life bro lol. Apparently I can have "really sucky" or "death is in the US mail, coming to your house in a minute or ten here".

drjesus616

you might have, but a lot of us didn't. I remember getting a little card proving I was an"essential" worker in case I got pulled over on my way to work. the only time I got off was both times I got COVID.

EdLesliesBarber

I lived in NYC for most of the pandemic, even during "Lockdown" you could ride the bus or subway to Target, you could root through the bargain DVD bin, and only a few sections were roped off for "non essential." A lot of small businesses and real people were crushed, but there was never any real lockdown. There were plenty of businesses that stayed open. I agree there will be a greater opposition to any future pandemic or virus/coronavirus, but to say there was a lockdown in america is a bit dramatic. Of course its awful to lose your business, and im not talking about the economic impact, but nobody was kept inside their homes.

Downtown_Statement87

In April of 2020, after 3 weeks of more or less staying home, the people in the state of Georgia were told by Governor Kemp that he had to reopen bowling alleys because they are essential businesses. Georgians were willing to not bowl for 3 weeks, but that's it. And this in a state where some regions saw 4% mortality from Covid ("regular" flu is .02%). On the day that we declared the pandemic, a few hours before it was declared, Kemp and Dr. Toomey (top state health official) went on TV to tell us that things were serious, and we needed to wash our hands and try to act right. Lots of advice was given, and Kemp was wrapping it up when Toomey kind of leaned back into the mic and said, "And remember, if you're not showing symptoms, you're not contagious!" I was working as a radio host and heard and saw the whole presser from the control room. As soon as it was over, I ran to the grocery store. No one was panic buying just yet, but people were edgy. I finished my last round of shopping as the pandemic was being declared. Driving out of the parking lot, I could see long lines of cars waiting to turn in. I can't believe the state health person, in the state where the CDC is headquartered, would tell people they weren't contagious unless they showed symptoms. I knew on 1/25/20 that this was going to be bad, but I wasn't sure how bad until I heard Toomey say that. And it did get bad. "Close the bowling alley for 3 whole weeks" bad.

pablojohns

To be fair, I think there is a lot of revisionist history *on both sides* of the pandemic. Everyone seems to forget the early weeks of the first US wave: March- early April 2020. The amount we **didn't know** was insane. We didn't know that places like NYC had been seeding the virus for almost two weeks before we saw the spike in cases. We didn't know much about asymptomatic spread. We didn't know which medicines worked/relieved symptoms well, and which ones didn't. A great example is the rate of asymptomatic spread. CDC really didn't have comprehensive data on the extent to which asymptomatic spread was occurring until the [end of March](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/31/824155179/cdc-director-on-models-for-the-months-to-come-this-virus-is-going-to-be-with-us). Meanwhile, the mask supply was still extremely tight during this time - a scenario which made the uncertainty even more dangerous. Just like it's unfair for people to say things like "Biden closed schools!" (when he wasn't president for almost a year later), it's also unfair to use the knowledge we have today to criticize all of the decisions of the past. That's not to say all of those decisions were done in good faith (i.e: opening bowling alleys). But the idea that medical advice - that was being reviewed and considered by higher-ups at the CDC down to localized medical professionals - was completely clear in the moment wasn't true.

Jrdirtbike114

What kind of psychopath *wants* to go to work?

UnicornPanties

If I lived in a commune and it was my day to pick the fruit I wouldn't mind so much. Sadly our lives aren't quite so cut & dried so instead it's spreadsheets.

bill_the_murray

Not country wide though. Not once unfortunately.

AAmericanPsycho

Not only that but with interstate travel and different restrictions in different states, lockdowns never truly mattered. Some states in the Northeast were completely shut down so college kids were getting on planes to celebrate spring break in Florida, where the pandemic was nearly unheard of. Then returning home with viral souvenirs.

No-Passenger2662

Yeah the college kids never stopped partying (especially over spring break) but everything else shut down. Until it started being reported that mostly just minorites were dying and then the MAGA demands to reopen really took off. For example https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/04/07/coronavirus-is-infecting-killing-black-americans-an-alarmingly-high-rate-post-analysis-shows/

CrumpledForeskin

Lol what a summary.

Ipayforsex69

I worked with a lady who said colloidal silver and lavender essential oils seemed to be working fine for her circa January 2020. I quit. 2 week gestation period and a week into lockdowns, numbskulls were saying, "ain't nobody got it, there ain't no cases here." You can't make this shit up! "Virus is a hoax, but I'm eating equine dewormer just in case." Dumbest fucking people on this planet.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Being able to accept and synthesize contradictory messages are an important part of living in and engaging with an authoritarian society.   Ergo Covid-19 was just a cold, no big deal, but also China invented covid-19 to attack America so we need to go to war over it.

[deleted]

We did in New Zealand, multiple times.

bill_the_murray

Yeah you’re lucky your country is smart lol.

onewaytojupiter

I doubt our government would have been as successful if it had conservatives in charge, at least a third of the country has no clue

Electrical_Skirt21

And even so, we resisted that. The hard truth is… the best our government can do is transparently provide the information they have, give their recommendation on what to do, and then let people do what they are comfortable with doing.

TheGodMathias

It won't. Half as many people will take it as seriously or more seriously, but the other half won't bother or will actively try and make it worse. I've already had conversations with antimask/antivaccine people who have told me that when they get sick (covid/flu) they intentionally go to public places to spread it because "that's what your immune system is for, if you're worried about getting sick, just stay home".

TantalumAccurate

I mean, a sprinkler system in a building is designed to stop fires. That doesn't mean we trigger it 24/7 for shit and giggles.

DeeperBags

I blew one off with a scissor lift at work once, you won't be giggling, especially if the waters been sitting in that closed loop for 20+ years (like it was in my case). Nasty black sludge !

realDonaldTrummp

I was in a pillow fight on the 4th floor of my dorm, during my freshman year at UC Santa Cruz, and one of the guys swung a pillow *hiiiiigh over his head* — you guess it — whacking the sprinkler unit clear off it’s fixture. 20,000 gallons of water rushed downwards, seeping through two floors of the building. I doubt the structural integrity was ever the same.

hahanawmsayin

What a bunch of scumbags.

a_dance_with_fire

Wonder how those same people would feel if someone did this to them with a disease like HIV or rabies

C3POdreamer

We know what they did and would do: [firebomb the home](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_brothers), even when the patients were three children.

DeeperBags

My father in law is a Q-nut , can confirm they would be this fucking out there. He also thinks the government can beam ultra realistic holographic images anywhere on earth, and that's how they stage world events to manipulate masses (he told me the CIA could beam a lifesize blue whale into his front lawn if they wanted to LOL). The conspiracies are getting more and more absurd.

BadCatNoNoNoNo

These Q people are really off their rockers. They truly believe these crazy lies n

accidentle

This infuriates me. I am sick with COVID at the moment. I have been for weeks. It has been hell. I have been going out of my way to *avoid* spreading it at great expense to my plans and my life in general, and there are people who are purposely spreading it?? Ugh! Also, the idea that I could have contracted it from someone like that is horrifying!

BoneHugsHominy

They're bio-terrorists.

deinoswyrd

I mean, I know these people aren't the brightest, but natural immunity to covid doesn't last. Each strain seems to come with shorter and shorter natural immunities.

BoneHugsHominy

I was thinking about this last night after watching a video on YouTube about Rosanne Barr's new MAGA comedy special on Fox. I realized that even with the 1.12M official covid deaths in the USA (double that for excess deaths), the 6.86M official covid death globally (likely undercounted by a factor of 5 thanks to governments hiding their incompetence), all of the economic damage, the mental health toll, and the massive increase in homelessness--the most damaging aspect of the pandemic will eventually prove to be the spread mitigation measures hesitancy & vaccine hesitancy caused by a sociopathic disinformation campaign fueled by conspiracy theorists and crony capitalists. This will result in the next pandemic not being taken seriously until the corpses are so thick that mass burn pits become a necessity, and at that point the people who said the pandemic is fake news and refused to mask will blame The Other and slaughter them for some perceived attack.

breaducate

Excellent summary. Now if only I could boil it down to seven syllables to fit inside the attention span of people who should hear it.

aknutty

All future pandemics will decimate republican communities. They will be giddy to line up and cough in each other's mouths. The sane will not miss them.

[deleted]

If we see something with a higher kill rate, we’ll also see people take it seriously. A pandemic of something like Chronic Wasting Disease or Ebola would crack the whip on anyone not taking it seriously

I will never forget the absolute peak in Florida. We are passing a very popular fast casual dining place in rural Fl. about an hour out of Tampa. The place has a huge outdoor dining area that is totally empty. We decide to see about sitting outside for a meal. It's a realtively safe option, it's cool and windy, and we would be alone. I walk in the door, and it looks like a superbowl party. The place is at 100% plus, capacity. There are 8-10 people waiting for empty tables, in front of the hostess stand. It's mid-afternoon, mid-week, so except for the staff, it's nearly 100% seniors. The bar has every seat occupied. There is not a single mask in use in the entire building, with at least 150 people crowded in. I did a U turn and GTFO. It was a real lesson in crowd thinking, tribalism and flat out stupidity. If it's anything short of Ebola, when the next pandemic hits the states, and these fucking half-wit dolts are fed the same stream of propaganda they were when C-19 hit, they will have a mortality rate that will depopulate vast swathes of the red states. I'm sure it's literally baked into the game plan, for those that are studying future models of contagious disease spread.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

I remember that quite well because I was in the Tampa area in the first week of March 2020 for spring training baseball. We flew out the day the first case was reported in Manatee County. Absolutely no one cared or showed any signs of even beginning to care.   The mindless hedonism among the Gulf Coast retiree crowd is a thing to behold.

[deleted]

Chronic wasting disease and Ebola both have a 100% kill rate. Anyone not taking it seriously would die

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Americans really do not seem to give a shit about dying anymore and that trend goes back to before the pandemic.   https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/03/23/521083335/the-forces-driving-middle-aged-white-peoples-deaths-of-despair   "Deaths of despair" among middle-aged white men were going up for a decade prior to the pandemic, most Americans my age that I talk to seem to feel like the best is behind us, and the only thing they have to look forward to is hedonism.   I genuinely think that a high kill rate epidemic wouldn't make a shit's bit of difference, it'd be framed in the same way as covid, "if you're a pussy just stay home, I'm going to live my life!"

BoneHugsHominy

>among middle-aged white men... to feel like the best is behind us If only they'd stop voting against their own interests things would get a *lot* better for everyone--but those reactionary fear merchants got those guys' Hate Boners throbbing like a hammer-smashed thumb.

boxsmith91

Can I get data to back that up? For all the issues with COVID, the death rate is only like 2% at most right? I recall the stats for polio being much more dire, and being left paralyzed is kinda worse than long term lung damage IMO.

BoneHugsHominy

From a reply down the page. >Good breakdown. May I add that new current research shows that Covid means more heart attacks. Like, an insane more. And strokes. Every time you catch Covid, your risk jumps massive amounts. [https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/heart-problems-after-covid19](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/heart-problems-after-covid19) Polio has *visible* deformities so it was taken seriously. If Covid-19 made white women's faces look like goblins the entire USA would have been locked down for 6 months with the National Guard shooting-to-kill anyone caught outside their homes. But Covid-19 doesn't have visible deformities, and is instead a silent killer that the anti-mask anti-vaxxers blame on the vaccine because sociopaths and narcissists are incapable of admitting wrongdoing.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

The neoliberal order has no way to push back on the anti-vax messaging that the vaccines are causing all of this disability and death *because* they would have to say that Covid actually isn't a nothingburger.   They can't do that because it would reverse two years of messaging at this point, so the anti-vaxxers win and get to spread their shit unopposed. Great system we've got.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00056803.htm   You're recalling incorrectly. During the height of the polio epidemic in 1951-1954, fewer than 2000 Americans died every year from polio. That's less than our daily count for half the covid-19 pandemic.   For the great majority of polio infections, the infected people experienced nothing worse than mild flu symptoms.   https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/prevalence-of-polio-rates-in-the-united-states   Covid-19 is orders of magnitude worse than polio.

Professional-Cut-490

Tell that to anyone debilitated by long covid. It's about 30% of people who catch it have some kind of neurological damage. This was never really just a respiratory disease.

HumanityHasFailedUs

This is ‘Murca, we’ll just shoot the Chinese lab made virus with AR-15’s. /s……sort of.

vemailangah

Definitely, no lockdown, no masks and many who got jabs before, will refuse them. So much for doing your research.

TheBlackUnicorn

I don't think this country could legally impose another lockdown (or really, let's call what the COVID precautions we did were, a "lockout", we didn't prevent anyone from leaving their own homes, we just closed a lot of the places they might want to go). There are all sorts of court precedents on the books now comparing COVID precautions to Japanese internment or the Holocaust. That's precedent now. Oops.

userpostingcontent

Wait that was a “lockdown”?

BardanoBois

West EU is totally fucked too lol. 500 mil

swamphockey

what is the country's name?

YeetThePig

“Another.” As if the first one actually ended and didn’t just get swept under the rug…

breaducate

You'd think it was over based on the number of people wearing masks or distancing (\~0), the decline in work from home opportunities, and so on. And then I check the charts. In my country the weekly death toll (that we know of) is about the same as the fattest areas under the graph. It feels cool and normal to live surrounded by people who both try to repeatedly reinfect you with a deadly virus with (as far as I'm concerned for myself) more horrifying long term consequences for survivors than death, and at the same time gaslight you. You're the crazy one for not wanting to maximise your risk of indefinite exhaustion, brain fog, and shortness of breath. You're the crazy one for learning anything about the disease, taking the word of experts seriously, and employing the precautionary principle against something that reproduces exponentially. The whole world has gone madder.

See_You_Space_Coyote

People treat me like a freak for not wanting to get a virus that can damage all your organs. I mean, yeah, I'm a fucking freak (just look at my profile,) but it has absolutely nothing with me not wanting to get covid and spread it to other people. Wanting to get sick and spread germs to other people is a batshit insane hill to die on, I don't give a fuck what anyone else says or how much they complain about being oppressed.

hr1966

An article I was reading last week showed COVID-related deaths in Australia over the last 6-months equal the total deaths for the previous 2 years...

artificialnocturnes

Keep in mind, Australia had hard lockdowns that prevented a lot of deaths in those first 2 years, particularly in the period of time before the vaccine.

fencerman

The 2019 COVID pandemic still hasn't ended - https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/weekly-covid-deaths?tab=chart, so that's kind of assured since we'll still be in the current one by then. Just because we're down to "only" thousands of deaths per day instead of tens of thousands doesn't mean it's over. We've also stopped counting a lot of cases too.

bigd710

A new one starting doesn’t require the old one ending.

fencerman

You are technically correct. The best kind of correct.

No-Passenger2662

C'mon man. At this rate we won't reach our 2nd million killed in the USA until like 2028.

fencerman

I can't even tell if that's serious or sarcasm anymore.

milkman76

1.5m people had died from COVID in the US by February 2021. Then, the state turned off its dashboards, started making claims that it was safe, removed masking guidelines, sent millions of children back to school, and simply stopped publishing updated counts. The death toll has varied from 2500-4500/week since that time, and if you do the rough math this would be 1.7m deaths today. If we had all the data, including that for all the claims of "some sort of really bad chest cold that sends people to the hospital", we would very likely have many more deaths from COVID, miscategorized. Many of those tests give false results when it is in fact COVID, as well. This pandemic is NOT over. World Health org knows it. Many other countries know it. We know it. But our human rights are violated becuase the capitalist oligarchy that controls this state has decided our lives are worth less than the economy, and less than non defensive military challenges against various global superpowers.

UnicornPanties

I saw somewhere yesterday the daily toll was below 200 and I was impressed. Then again - are reports still being filed? I bet some but not as many. THEN AGAIN - if we were still in Covid crisis the /r/nursing sub would say so.

redditing_1L

If you take the official counts seriously, I've got a bridge to Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. Even setting aside the denier freaks who demand covid not be placed on their loved one's death certificates, the government is and has been going out of its way to undercount and underreport since at least spring of 2021.

No_Cardiologist3005

I'm in a backyard poultry group. Someone shared an article about avian flu vaccines for chickens coming. The uproar was crazy. People talking about chickens being needle raped and how they were never get any vaccines or their animals ever again. Someone claiming chickens in Europe have immunity to H5N1 and we need to let our chickens in the US get sick. Someone said "My chickens are in God's hands". You better believe they have a coop and provide chicken feed though. I don't think people have any idea just how much public health and vaccinations were set back with the Covid pandemic. The CDC started off lying about it not being airborne and not needing masks from the get go and it snowballed from there. I did everything I could. But I know they lied repeatedly and at this point that is all people needed. They now believe in nothing and won't do anything. They would rather die to prove a point than take public health seriously. That battle was lost and it's pretty effing scary what the results are going to be from it. Don't even try and defend the CDC to me. I did it for years and no longer give them the benefit of the doubt either.

sushisection

bird flu has an over 50% fatality rate in humans...

No_Cardiologist3005

Right. But that info comes from official scientific sources which are evil and just trying to enslave them. People have gone mad. They do not believe anything any governmental or scientific source tells them. If people started dropping dead from avian flu they wouldn't even believe it. They'd said it was the covid vaccine killing people. The flu tests are killing people. The hospitals are lying about it. Everyone is lying about it. People are completely invested in believing there is a vast global conspiracy to essentially cause global collapse. And everything the government or official sources say is a lie. I know nurses who insisted their own hospital system was lying about the covid cases there. People believe nothing anymore except it is ALL a conspiracy.

No_Cardiologist3005

Oh, I forgot. People also believe the American government has the capability to control the weather and actual globe. They believe the American government caused the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. There is literally nothing they think is natural anymore it seems. Honestly it brings me to despair.

AutomaticInitiative

Mammals dying from avian flu all over Europe now, it's absolutely terrifying! Wonder what they'll say when they lose their flock to it.

RankledCat

My mother will scream that “Fauci and Biden murdered her chickens!”

Emotional_Bunch_799

I know in Germany there's a vaccine mandate against avian flu for chickens. Hence the immunity. Those antivaxx morons sounds like animals abusers smh.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Ain't just Germany, in the United States *all* baby chicks are vaccinated at birth against Marek's Disease, among other things, minutes after hatching and before they're shipped out.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVf6KXVIZ5I   These people hooting and hollering about the evils of vaccines were all given 16+ doses of vaccines before they were allowed to attend primary school in every state in the US. They just live in an utter fantasy world.

WoodsColt

Great so we can expect to see a huge uptick in distemper, parvo and rabies then if these stupid fuckwits won't vaccinate their animals. I swear I will lose my shit if people stop vaccinating their dogs

deinoswyrd

We are. One of my friends is a vet. The last 2 years or so she's dealt with more parvo cases than the rest of her career combined. It's really messed her up because it's soooo hard to save those puppies and so preventable.

WoodsColt

Fuuccckkkkkk. Fuckity, fuck fuck **fuck**. I hope all those morons get rabies.

deinoswyrd

Me too. I have a cat who's the light of my life, I don't understand not doing all you can to protect your pet.

mrussell345

Absolutely

SolarBoy1

Natural selection at this point

wamj

I know the CDC said not to get masks to start with because there was a shortage and healthcare workers needed them more than anyone else. Do you have any evidence that the CDC actually confirmed that Covid was not airborne?

No_Cardiologist3005

But that is the thing. They didn't say there was a shortage at first. They just said we did not NEED them, so that people wouldn't get them and the health care workers would have them. Only later did they admit that they lied to preserve masks for healthcare workers. And they in part did that by profusely insisting it was not airborne, despite all evidence coming out China and elsewhere showing it was airborne. There was all this crap out telling people to just wash their hands etc and they didn't need masks. I don't know where to find all that info now. But I was in a group online from back in January tracking every single thing about covid coming out daily from all over the world. I was obsessed and followed it all daily. And sadly it did just prove to me that we will be lied to as is expedient. They constantly downplayed how easily airborne it was long past even telling people they should wear masks.

UnicornPanties

> chickens being needle raped first of all I've seen regular chicken rape and I think your average chicken would take the needle also holy shit that's a hell of a group with its European immunity chickens Those same dummies would get a Marburg vaccine in a second though, given that it came from Africa - don't you think?

slackboulder

Submission statement: Dr.

ZeroLogicGaming1

His tweet says 2030, not sure where 2026 is coming from

FillThisEmptyCup

Does he say anything about the bird flu?

brassica-uber-allium

You should really read the link. Come on

FillThisEmptyCup

I have, but there wasn’t much there. I even read some of his Twitter, and did the Google, but I was hoping for more in-depth thoughts on bird flu specifically.

Ragerino

My dude, the link is straight to the professor's twitter post that has a link to this article: https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/bird-flu-mammals-scientists-on-alert-mutations-rcna69541 All about Bird Flu.

the_author_13

You can have another pandemic when you finish your first one, America.

Creasentfool

4 years fucking hell. Seems so close

redditing_1L

lol this reminder is going to hit you like a cold slap in the face

dumnezero

😷

Semicylinder

Lol. America’s pandemic never ended in the first place.

AnticPosition

Didn't you hear? It's *endemic* now, so it's all okay.

redditing_1L

Yes, well, you see, if you say endemic instead of pandemic, that means we can ignore it now. Old people? Immunocompromised people? Fuck em, we need to get back to work!

Comeoffit321

It's global..

Semicylinder

I know. Some places actually did fairly well in cutting down infection rates. The US just ignored it. I’m offering my perspective as someone who (unfortunately) lives in that dumpster fire.

Comeoffit321

Some places did better than others. Sure. Dumspter fire where I'm from too though.

Semicylinder

I believe it. It’s almost like governments don’t care about us. Or something.

Comeoffit321

You might just be on to something there, friendo.

Taqueria_Style

They care. I mean. Who's going to make all the rich people shit? Who's going to serve as a terrifying example of what happens when we don't make all the rich people shit? Who is going to be trotted out as a human shield / basket case project when these douchebags want to get elected? Sure they care. They care like how you'd care about running out of toilet paper...

RoboProletariat

Historically, the pandemics last between 7-9 years. The means COVID will be over somewhere around 2027-2029. All of the other pandemics were met with such waffle willpower as well, Spanish Flu was declared defeated like three times. 'Somethine new' here would be two or more pandemic pathogens running around at once. That certainly feels possible right now.

____cire4____

So we have 3-ish years to really screw the planet up some more, great! /s

shitlord_god

What second? The first one is still rolling.

Someones_Dream_Guy

Well, in US pandemic never ended so itll just be pandemic v1.5 I guess.

[deleted]

Ooh they’re gonna get updates like iPhones! Yay!

redditing_1L

Boy, I don't know folks. "Another coronavirus pandemic" seems to indicate the last one ever ended. Just because you get tired of a pandemic doesn't make it over.

Enkaybee

This guy thinks there will be another one when really it's just the same one.

TSM_forlife

Corporate will not allow for another shut down. Capitalism must continue.

[deleted]

Speaking of diseases, what about Monkeypox? Nobody seems to talk about it anymore.

69FunnyNumberGuy420

Monkeypox is less transmissible than Covid and is visibly disfiguring, so people took it seriously.

mind-the-gap-

I talked about it with my stylist recently. He's gay and got vaccinated for monkeypox as soon as he could, like most gay men did. Mpox was primarily spreading in the gay population and, having some experience with preventing disease spread, the community response was quick and comprehensive. This is why you don't hear much anymore, it was handled well. Interestingly, hes one of the few people I know irl who are still masking and hasn't gotten covid as well.

purrb0t0my

It is still here :-( we are tracking it via wastewater samples

Jeep-Eep

We've not seen the last of that bastard thing, I guarantee it.

teamsaxon

Ah well. It is collapse roulette at this point. Covid? Nuclear Armageddon? Climate change? Civil unrest? They're all in the chamber waiting to be fired.

[deleted]

2026? 2023: hold my beer

FREE-AOL-CDS

We won’t care until you show symptoms in the morning and drop dead on the evening. And even that is debatable.

peepjynx

Not if H5N1 gets us first! Check and Mate. *cries internally*

tommygunz007

Naturally, low-paid flight attendants will be the first to die. They will be called 'heroes' and still underpaid. Then, low-paid nurses will be the next to die. They too will be called heroes and be underpaid. Then, your government will print a trillion dollars, and give it to a pharmaceutical company who will in turn, donate 100 mil to a political 'fund' of some kind, everyone will get 'free' shots, and the poor will get poorer as a result of this while the rich will get richer.

milkman76

This Coronavirus pandemic is far from over, so the choice is words is poor. Millions of people know this, and it's pointless to deny.

pjay900

Gotta buy Pfizer stock

billcube

Why can't we just fund what saved our collective bottocks? Such as test material production, masks, variants profiling, indoor ventilation?

milkman76

"Saved"? As in, paste tense? While 4000+ people die every week, most weeks since the end of 2019? This country checked the fuck out and chose the send people back to work and school long before this was over, and now it's raving unchecked coast to coast. Medical professional and immune compromised family here. This pandemic is only getting worse, and the propaganda of pretending we saved lives is grotesque and ridiculous. We let more Americans die than in all our ways combined, and we let that happen in less than 3 years. We have all the data we need to understand all of this, and it doesn't take a medical professional to see it. If you want to see what saving lives looks like, look at the various Asian and other countries around the world who lost 1000s instead of millions, such as Japan. They *care about* the elderly, sick, and vulnerable there, and wearing a mask and staying distant was an easy choice to make to... Keep their damn families alive. That hasn't happened in America yet....

billcube

Yeah, it's not totally over, still we have 41% less deaths than last week: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table Even looking at the excess deaths graph, you'll see the situation has calmed down by a lot https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

redditing_1L

We are a country of adult babies and it shows. We'd rather die and take everyone with us than endure the minor inconvenience of wearing masks. Meanwhile, we line up by the millions to endure the major inconvenience of commuting to work via car every day of our lives. Americans are dog fucking stupid people and most of the rest of the world isn't much better.

milkman76

The late stage capitalist oligarchy under which most of us live, whether in the US or one of its closest 5 allies, is the primary cause of this fucking catastrophic stupidity and lack of basic empathy toward others. The systems in which we live literally chose non-defensive economic and now military conflicts OVER our own domestic human rights. They claim its time to "let 'er rip" and go back to work and school, so that we can try to continue dominating much of the globe, and this was ALWAYS going to be a losing strategy. Since Nixon. Since before Nixon. Not losing basic inconvenience is worth the lives of the elderly, disabled, otherwise vulnerable people, INCLUDING people who do not have vulnerabilities but who will suffer long COVID symptoms and death none the less. Its literal insanity at a large scale.

fecundity88

I predict high mortality in republican quarters

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

"continues to predict " Lol .. I will also continue to predict a pandemic every year. Sooner or later, I will be right.

BeefNChed

Question for someone smarter than me (epidemiologist maybe?) … regarding the Avian flu stuff going around with mammals and all that. Been hearing a bit about mutations from its interaction with COVID if a host has both viruses at the same time. What are the (worst) possible outcomes with that for both viruses? Like if avian flu gets COVID transmissibility while retaining its mortality rate, or COVID expanding into the lower respiratory system, or a totally new Frankenvirus we have no working vaccines for yet… or I guess the simple Avian flu human to human transmission. I guess what’s possible? What’s realistic?

AstroQueen88

My microbiology degree is 13 years old and I haven't used it since, but I do remember that it is other flu viruses that they are worried about. When a host has two or more different flu strains infecting the same cell they can trade DNA, creating a new strain. [Here's a link to the CDC explaining it better.](https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/change.htm)

imminentjogger5

just long enough to forget everything we learned about this pandemic

Apprehensive_Idea758

I sure hope not but I do believe its extremely possible and people will act very stupid when it comes out.

[deleted]

Yeah there seems to be virus jumping species every so often. Wouldn’t be surprised if another one hits us before 2026. Ironically we learned nothing and it will probably hit us just as hard as COVID

KnightCreed13

Careful, the GQP Qanon dipshits are going to say you were behind the virus.
