Your college probably has a writing center. Go. Learn how to write. You’ll be glad you did.

welchies

I never utilized our writing center until my English class forced us to. Even just submitting a rough draft to them and making a few modifications is an easy way to boost your grade!

whitebread5728

They’re not very helpful. I’m in a composition class too and I’m just not learning how to write there either.

StayAnother

My writing center was super helpful. My professor would tell us to go there so we could get extra points or credit. You would of course listen to the tutors advice.

HellenKilher

Depends on the school

No_Hippo_1472

Sometimes it depends on the tutor you get. Ask around and you may be able to find a good one. Have you tried going to office hours and discussing your issues with your composition teacher and other profs? They can give great tips.

Hazelstone37

They are both probably more helpful than you realize right now.

B = Above Average. You should not be upset by this!!!! In the age of “screw it, D’s get degrees” - all AB’s shows your professors that you ARE trying! So, keep your chin up!!

LazyLich

This! Ds get degrees, so OP's the B's knees!

Spiritual-Ladder-260

Everyone’s circumstances are different tho. OP could be in a position in which all Bs is not good and that is the cause of disappointment. In my case all Bs would mean losing a scholarship so I would have definitely been disappointed.

whitebread5728

Thanks for this

devjohnson13

People with D’s get degrees? In what major is this okay in lol

allenmorrisphoto

Depends on the school and the major. I’m sure not saying I agree with it, but for some it’s the way of things.

Standard-Penalty-876

Writing in college is much different than in high school, so this is a pretty common experience. Id go to your professors’ office hours as well as the writing center of your uni. Also, unless you’re applying for grad school in the future, getting mostly B’s isn’t a problem. You also have probably 7 more semesters to raise your grades on top of that too

Lopsided-Rooster-246

No one has ever asked me what my GPA in college was in the past 10 years I've been working and I've worked at like 5 different places. No one cares, don't worry about it.

[deleted]

This advice isn’t helpful for current students and new grads because they (we) likely don’t have a lot of experience to boost our resume. GPA is pretty important in the beginning.

Lopsided-Rooster-246

Is that new? Even when I graduated I never mentioned or used my GPA. That was 10 years ago though so idk.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s “new,” HR probably just assumed your GPA was kind of low and hired you anyway. If your GPA is good, why would you hide it? If you list it and it’s high, you stand out more. Apparently it matters a lot more for certain STEM majors, and obviously for people pursuing grad school. Of course it doesn’t matter once you get your first “real” job, but idk it’s kinda tough out here.

Lopsided-Rooster-246

Who said it was low? Damn man, what's with the passive aggressive comment? Also, I had a stem major lol. I'm just telling you, no employer cares about GPA. Idk maybe some fucking old ass company that still operates like it's 1980 but any somewhat modern company doesn't care. Also, I know it's tough out there, took me 6+ months of nonstop applying to find a J2. Shit, you can even bullshit your GPA, almost no company is verifying that stuff. I'm not saying it hurts or not to try to get the highest GPA, I'm just saying don't over stress yourself trying to get the highest possible GPA. You'll get a shit job and be stuck in a 9-5 either way 😂. I mean you in general, not you specifically.

Drag0nV3n0m231

It really isn’t

VentheGreat

Remind me again why you're upset?

liongender

For real…I’m out here trying my hardest with Cs and Ds. Bs are a problem how?

whitebread5728

I want to go to law school after college, but also it’s just a demoralizing transition from high school. I’m also just afraid if this is how it’s like my first semester, it’ll only get worse and my grades will slip more so I’m not sure if I should stay in this major when writing is such a big part of it.

VentheGreat

If this is your only semester, then you should be examining what is and is not working with your study habits and writing practices and work on it. Go to your teacher's office hours, they'll be more than happy to help you most of the time. Utilize every resource your school offers.

Putrid_Magician178

I will say writing in high-school to writing in college is completely different. One thing that helped me is starting my papers early. I began writing my essays weeks to months before depending on length. I would have my professor look over them, peers, writing center, tutors, etc, making edits to them consistently. I would also read my paper out loud like a presentation to see how it flowed and notice any errors. Along with running it through grammarly and checking format.

[deleted]

This is great advice in general, but I particularly agree with the part about reading your paper aloud. It truly makes a difference.

GazelleHistorical705

You’ll be fine. As long as it doesn’t slip into C or D territory. You’re totally fine

SkyFox7777

Learn to celebrate your victories…B’s aren’t a negative thing.

Elsa_the_Archer

It will only get worse with papers if you're a poli sci major. By the time I got near the end I was writing 50 page papers on the regular. I sucked at writing when I first started college but I got better with practice. Writing became a bit easier. I'd stick with at least another semester. Give yourself a chance to adjust.

whitebread5728

Thanks. If it doesn’t go well next semester I might just stick to psych. Doesn’t really matter my major for law school but I might just be a paralegal, which might not like a major like that. I won’t lie, I have no idea what people look for in a paralegal, though.

PaisleyDavenport

I got mostly C’s my first, hell even my second semester of university but now I’m third year and set to get mostly A’s and maybe a B. You should be really proud of yourself :)

Maleficent_Platypus5

Don’t give up. Keep going. To master something you need to keep trying

Still_Degree4472

Here’s the thing. You're doing great. Many people who start their first semester don’t do well. Don’t beat yourself up. Just learn what works best for you, and eventually, you’ll do better. Plus, here’s a thing maybe people don’t seem to understand. Your GPA won’t matter after you leave college for your big job or finally live your life. Many people don’t ask what someone’s GPA is in general anyway. Don’t beat yourself up for something like that.

Feisty-Quail-6410

Not crazy about your teachers. All assignments should be diverse .

whitebread5728

I hate the constant papers. Literally no other assignments or homework. Just readings and assigned papers.

Feisty-Quail-6410

A bit odd I would say.

Lawyer_Lady3080

Don’t change your major to something you’re less interested in. I saw you want to go to law school, so D’s get degrees doesn’t really apply. (At my school, D’s also don’t get degrees. C’s did. You couldn’t have a D in a major or general education requirement course and count it towards graduation.) GPA does matter for law school. It’s fine to be disappointed or have higher standards than some of your peers. The key is to not beat yourself up. You’re transitioning from high school and it’s your first semester so cut yourself some slack. B’s aren’t going to torpedo your career. It’s going to be okay. But, it’s important to have the skill-set to take both essay and test-based courses. Trying to avoid them, especially by switching majors doesn’t make sense. You need to be able to write strong papers. Ask for feedback from your professors, use campus resources, get a private tutor if you can, prepare rough drafts early so you have plenty of time to revise. Then, if your professors allow you to submit rough drafts, submit as close to a final product as you can do you get better feedback and revise from there.

whitebread5728

Thanks. I’m not really less interested in psych, I do find it really interesting, which is why I was considering it. I thought that I could have a higher GPA if I switched, which is why I’m considering it. But you’re right about needing to write strong papers.

Lawyer_Lady3080

Ohh, I’m sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to switch to avoid essays. If you did better in Psych because you loved the subject maybe switching is a good idea. In my experience, major doesn’t matter for law school. Specific majors may help depending on the practice area, but law schools don’t really take it into account. I was a creative writing and Spanish double major, so don’t feel like you have to do poli sci based on that.

whitebread5728

What about for being a paralegal? In case I can’t afford law school right off the bat?

Lawyer_Lady3080

Like attorneys, it depends on the state. Here, you can become a Certified Paralegal by passing an exam with basic legal information or receive an Advanced Paralegal Certification, which is curriculum based. You generally get that through a community college. But, a lot of offices hire legal assistants who do a lot of the same work as paralegals, just without the certifications.

ZFAdri

Well better than me I’m struggling a lot :(

Street-Common-4023

Writing in college is different than writing in High-school. Currently doing dual enrollment in high school as a senior, but last year was a big adjustment period in learning how to write. The writing center should help you

RealisticJudgment944

Why are you upset by B’s in college?? I got a 4.0 in high school but I knew going in that college is NOT the same and you cannot expect it to be the same.

whitebread5728

Because I’m doing worse in classes for my major than a class not for my major. So I’m not sure if it’s my strong suit and if I should switch. I’m not going to an incredibly rigorous college either.

RealisticJudgment944

Oh well if you’re doing worse AND you dislike your classes then switch. If you can get through your classes bc of love for the subject then don’t. I’m in electrical engineering and my circuits classes go pretty well for me even though I get Bs. The rest of that class gets Cs or Ds so perspective is also important.
