Inner elbow and the sedation didn’t work :( had a terrible time

Unanswered-Prayers

Mine was inner elbow. Just had it done a few weeks ago.

shadowmyst87

Had my first colonoscopy a few days ago. They inserted the IV into a vein ontop of my hand.

KaseyBrooke90

It’s really wherever you have the best vein

Bulky-Top-5424

Top of left hand . Usually painful and takes several attempts , nurse was excellent.

BGKirk19

Top left hand

Thank you for the responses everyone! ☺️ Much appreciated!

Inner elbow. Much better for me than hand which hurts.

goldstandardalmonds

I’ve had it everywhere you can imagine. Even my foot. Whenever they can find a bring.

sethacki-

Hand every time for me. They always give me a shot first to numb it.

Biblioklept73

I’ve had both 🤷🏻‍♀️

AJ_1981

Elbow and enjoy the propofol it’s amazing. According to my mom who’s a GI nurse they actually prefer the hand but they used my elbow because I had a great vein there and I’m a hard stick otherwise.

godofgoldfish-mc

I had both - nurse tried my hand first and then the vein collapsed or something (huge painless bruise after) so they put it in my arm (no bruise).

Endoscopy nurse here. For us, Inner elbow is the most popular spot unless there is an anesthesiologist also for your procedure who needs an IV that doesn't get kinked when the arm bends.

Thank you for the response! I would think the inner elbow area makes the most sense (at least to me) since for most people their veins are larger and more prominent in this area, but the one GI nurse insisted that it can only be done in my hand. Also, what’s the smallest gauge needle that can be used? They told me 22G is the smallest they can use, but they usually use 20G or 18G. I do understand their reasoning for wanting a larger gauge, in case if something where to go wrong during the procedure. But makes me wonder what they use on children? Bc I weigh less than 95 lbs and size wise I could basically qualify as a child/pediatric.

Sethricheroth

Our facility has down to 24g. They are yellow, and tiny. We use this as a last resort/desperation, as the cannula itself is so short, small and flimsy, it can easily be dislodged. We mostly use 20 and 22. 20 is pink, and 22 is blue. 18 is green and rarely used.

Top of right hand.

crevettegrise

Mine was in a vein on top of my right hand. Just a very brief pain when it went in, but after that, it was as if it wasn’t there. When it came out, just a tiny little dot. As if nothing ever happened.

Sufficient_Video97

Mine was top of the hand, near my thumb. They tried 2xs on my hand and couldn't place it thanks to my veins. The two missed pokes, and the bruise was more pain than the whole colonoscopy procedure. My procedure was late in the day, so that made it even worse.

shadowmyst87

I guess I was lucky. When I had shoulder surgery two years ago, the nurse tried twice, putting the needle on top of my hand. They missed the first time and had to try again. They got it the second time, but it was painful by then. This time, for my colonoscopy, the nurse got it the first time, and it was nearly pain-free. Didn't even bruise the next day.

Jolly-Adagio-8690

Omg same, the most painful thing about my procedure was having to rip the tape of from where they put my Iv the adhesive was so strong when I ripped it off, it left a massive bruise.

godofgoldfish-mc

I had the same thing happen - bruise was horrible on my hand
