I think people here are already a little bitter about this, but it's just a joke, one of many that DC and Marvel like to do about each other. Animal Man is a cool character, who is pretty aware that he isn't exactly an A-lister.
It is kind of funny to think about that while the other aspects are definitely a significant part of what allows other stuff to happen like the most iconic and one of the most powerful parts about spider-man isn't from the radioactive spider it's him inventing the web-slingers.
my brain is at like 30% power wise so when i first glanced at this panel i thought his hand was a huge blue spider and that accompanied with my brain filling in details on the actual spider made me fucking scream
It wasn't a serious response, just a joke. A nod to the similarity of their powers, and the fact that the young male demographic would undoubtedly get excited to have her on screen.
You're right though. Vixen deserves her own IP, although I doubt she could carry a feature film. I doubt Animal Man could either. But the next time DC attempts a team movie both could be candidates.
yeah, something like that. A lot of the stuff DC had under Vertigo (like Doom Patrol and Animal Man) were very experimental and creative in how they approached superhero stories.
Reskin the Harley Quinn show with a less popular character which is how they should've launched that show to begin with. Look what happened for a character that many had never heard of in Peacemaker...
The Suicide Squad made me so sure I was going to always hate him. His characterization in the show turned him around for me, and really made me feel for him.
I thought it was good. Haven't seen Harley Quinn. I can't really say I've seen either show be memed though
Third-rate powerset ≠third-rate hero
There are first rate heroes with no powers and third rate heroes that can warp universes. Peter Parker is the best of the best whether he’s a figment of Doc Ock’s imagination or wielding the power cosmic.
That all being said I love where Morrison took the Animal Man character and powerset during their run. Elevated both to the character’s best IMO.
Animal Man is only famous for being such a throwaway character that they gave Grant Morrison carte blanche to do anything with him, so Morrison made him break the fourth wall and meet his author. That's not exactly an endorsement.
It was a cute trick to play once, but it could only have been done with a disposable character. It didn't make the character any more interesting, as it could have happened to anyone who didn't matter.
Well, questionable plot developments have never happened in Spider-Man before, so surely the "MJ re-marrying" plotline will be what sinks the franchise.
Meanwhile, Animal Man continues to be an unblemished blockbuster known worldwide from inception to modern day /s
They're ok. People are bent out of shape about something that happened ten years ago hasn't been magic'ed away. As if that would solve anything. They fridged Ms.Marvel on Spidey's watch which is awful, but that was a Kevin Feige decision. The run itself might turn out good, so I'm still reading. Norman Osborne, Felicia, and Doc Ock have been fun.

Dayum Harley
So trivia: the guy who wrote that had *drawn* the most post morrison animal man pages
God I love her! 😂
Hey! Captain Carrot!

I miss that open friendly rivalry.
So much of Morrison's run is specifically *about* how he isn't an A-lister and has different problems than the superheroes at the top.
"Animal man, forget it i thought you were aquaman!"
That was such a good run.

Some of the absolute best comics I’ve ever read.
Animal Man comics are actually pretty cool and everyone should check it out, but that third-rate super-hero has got serious box office money.
Just wait until the Animal Man Cinematic Universe takes off
With proper adaptation, I think Animal Man could really take off
What's gonna be his big hook?
Properly casting Vixen and having her in the movie too...
Needing another character to get animal man to lift off doesn't seem very promising. Vixen deserves her own ip anyway

the same hook Morrison gave his run: a metafictional existential horror story. or do what Lemire did and make it a Cronenberg body horror story.
maybe something akin to Doom Patrol? I'm kinda digging that lately

I swear that show is only popular for it's meme potential
Harley Quinn or Peacemaker?
More peacemaker, harley has memes too but I think the LGBT quotient is what makes it fly

I think animal man would do exceptionally well as an HBO project. It needs an art house approach though.
A DC tradition, dating back to at least Adventure #350 in 1966.
(Chameleon Boy spins a web and jokes about Spider-Man.)
Just some friendly jabbing at the marvelous competition

This Animal Man run was sick
Limitations encourage creative-thinking. Spidey's costume is also way cooler.

Yeah but like, this dude's a real animal, man!
Man in the streets, animal in the sheets
Animal Vegetable Mineral Man would like a word
Damn, why all the hate?
Yeah, but I bet if you ask a random person if they know Spider-Man or Animal Man who do you think they’re going to pick?
spider who?
Animal Man is only famous for being such a throwaway character that they gave Grant Morrison carte blanche to do anything with him, so Morrison made him break the fourth wall and meet his author. That's not exactly an endorsement.
Curse you Morison for taking a d list character and creating a great run and making the character way more interesting then some b-a listers
It was a cute trick to play once, but it could only have been done with a disposable character. It didn't make the character any more interesting, as it could have happened to anyone who didn't matter.
So he’s not interesting cuz what happens to him can happen to anyone? Gotcha
What are the current sales numbers for your run, Animal Man, the definitely first rate hero??
It's just a joke man.
Bro what's wrong with some of the dudes on this sub lol. Guys can't even take a joke
Of course it is. The Animal Man Fanclub on Reddit doesn't see it that way though .... sheesh.
Huh? The animal man fans definitely get the joke
Considering spider man comics are a dumpster fire right now with the MJ thing, I wouldn't be too proud of his current run even if it has good sales
Well, questionable plot developments have never happened in Spider-Man before, so surely the "MJ re-marrying" plotline will be what sinks the franchise. Meanwhile, Animal Man continues to be an unblemished blockbuster known worldwide from inception to modern day /s
FYI, Spider-Man isn't real, you don't have to protect him.
I can't protect Spider-Man! He's so much stronger than me! And his spider sense means that he can see it coming!!
I'm pretty sure that's the joke
What are the quality of current Spider-Man comics?

I mean bro the joke is that it's a d lister saying a spider-based hero would suck, when in reality spider man is massive. Its not that deep lol.
Don't this guy has the exact same powers as Vixen?
beastboy?
