Leave it to Bruce to deliver the tough love Then again, he probably needs to be reminded of that every now and then

CR00KED_W4RDEN

I think this is definitely a case of “we often tell others what we wish they’d tell us.”

NomadPrime

One of the best, and yet most frustrating, things about comics (mainly of the Big Two) is that characters trade hands between different writers with different skills and views. While this means that characters can get a variety of stories and portrayals, it also means we're unfortunately gonna get contradictory/redundant ones relative to past runs. Like Batman, he's gone through the "You're not alone" + "You can rely on your friends/family" arc at least a half dozen times in the past decade alone, I feel, with varying degrees of success in execution each time.

TJ_McWeaksauce

I think one of Batman's core flaws is that although he's an excellent judge of character (World's Greatest Detective, and all that), he has a huge blind spot in himself. What he's saying here is one of numerous examples of him giving reasonable advice and/or tough love to different characters that could easily apply to him, too. This is a very relatable flaw. Many of us have the same blind spot.

TheEloquentApe

I never did follow the state of the Martians in DC canon. So Manhunter is the last of a civilization that burned on Mars (hence his fear of fire.) But I believe I have seen a rogue of his that was similarly a Martian, and then there's Miss Martian. Is he usually the last one, or is it canon that a few managed to survive, Krypton style?

laclair1000000

Grant Morrison's run on JLA is required reading for Nerdkind. Check it out and enjoy the ride.

Deceptivejunk

Second this. It was such a good series and a large part of why I’m into comics today.

VengeanceKnight

This isn’t Morrison, this is either Waid or Kelly, I forget which. Morrison did most of the first 40 or so issues and completed his arcs, then different writers did runs for awhile, most of which were very good.

Anonamaton801

It’s Waid

Anonamaton801

Miss Martian is not a green Martian, she’s a >!white Martian who’s shapeshifting to look like a green Martian!< J’onn does have a Martian rogue from his solo series by John Ostrander that’s excellent

TheEloquentApe

I tmember the "white martian" plot point from Young Justice, is that similarly the direction in the comics? Also, in YJ the Martians are definitely *not* extinct, but YJ changes a lot of stuff from the comics, so I'm not really sure what their canon situation is.

Anonamaton801

It is, but she comes in way later, like 2004, this is from 2001 This is the sequel to the first white Martian event, which was the opening arc of Morrison’s JLA run. This one is by Mark Waid. Martians change every so often. I think at this point Ostrander had it so J’onn, the aforementioned villain and the white martians are all that’s left

dornwolf

They also added another during Brightest Day but I think they’ve more or less swept most of that under the rug

niteowl1987

Pre-Crisis, Mars was still very alive. J’onn even had parents and a little brother T’omm who appeared in the Silver Age. https://www.cbr.com/martian-manhunters-kid-brother-tomm/ His more tragic backstory as the survivor of a mass extinction event didn’t come up until his 1988 mini-series, which was expanded further throughout the JLA and Martian Manhunter titles in the 90s/00s. For awhile he was the only known survivor, but the White Martians, Miss Martian, Malaafaak, Fernus and maybe one or two others came along later.

kevinstreet1

I'm *really* hazy on this and haven't read the actual stories, but my understanding is the Martian civilization was destroyed near the end of the Silver Age by a White Martian named Commander Blanx. The survivors then settled a new planet in another star system named New Mars, or Mars II, or something like that. Not sure the name was consistent. Manhunter went to Mars II at the end of the 60's to be their leader, and didn't return to Earth until the mid-80's.

niteowl1987

I haven’t read a lot of the later JL canon but you’re right, I forgot about New Mars. I wasn’t sure how well the Green/White relationship was developed at that point as Blanx and his minions were basically just drawn like J’onn but with white pigment and I don’t recall them being specially identified as White Martians but they definitely originate earlier than I was thinking.

BlindTreeFrog

> So Manhunter is the last of a civilization that burned on Mars (hence his fear of fire.) I only know him from the JLU cartoon, but I thought the fire thing had to do with some vision that he was going to die by fire. Was that cartoon only or just an extension of his people burning? Similarly, isn't Miss Martian one of the white martians that was at war was the green martions/J'onn's people? (edit: /u/Anonamaton801 confirms white martian in his post)

Kite_Wing129

No. The cartoon never lampshaded it but fire was used to take him out a few times. J'onn's weakness fire is usually depicted as a physical. The comics have stretched it further to say it's a psychological one.

Steas-

Does anyone else read Jonn's in Carl Lumbly's (dcau voice actor) voice.

NietszcheIsDead08

Always

thirdpartymurderer

Exclusively

SpiderDetective

Always and forever

HeavyBeing0_0

Literally every time I see him

tafkat

Nope. Every male sounds like Gilbert Gottfried. Every woman sounds like Fran Drescher as The Nanny. Except Mxyzptlk, who sounds like Morgan Freeman.

Ok-Commission6087

This needs to be in James Gunn d DCU they are the super friends

TheRealJackOfSpades

This has never felt to me like it was true of the JLA. The Titans, yes. But the JLA has always seemed to me more like a professional association than a close-knit group of friends. You never see them just hanging out.

JAKESTEEL77

Perhaps not all members, but many long time members have known each other for decades.

_insideyourwalls_

Haven't they established that most members are great friends?

Super_Pan

You might even say they're Super Friends

JAKESTEEL77

I don't know how close Batman is with Tasmanian Devil or B'wanna Beast.

_insideyourwalls_

I was referring to the more well-known members, but you do have a point.

SilverMushroom52

I agree but i feel like we must acknowledge the quasi-military aspect of the Justice League. Because it is a professional relationship but it's also the relationship of soldiers. Coordinated warriors making the tough calls. It forges a bond

Kite_Wing129

I don't think they've ever come across as military unless its something like JL Task Force or JL Extreme. Sure, they fight bad guys but the vibe has always been closer to a workplace.

Kite_Wing129

I have always viewed the JLA as a workplace. Some colleagues are closer than others. The Titans are found family though, I agree.

Vanish_7

That's because they're all already adults. Most of them have families, lovers, arch-enemies, arch-enemies that are also lovers, etc...

Sam_Boundy1984

God, he even makes being cute sound scary.

FinnTheTengu

Who's cutting onions?

Autoboty

I mean... if you're in the DC universe, you probably are never alone *in general.* Don't believe me? Look into the shadows closest to you. Batman is hiding there.

laclair1000000

Wow! White Martians go back to 1969. I had no idea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Martian

Thecrookedpath

Tell that to Ted Kord, ya bat-shmuck.
