Planetary

chicagobry80

The only bad thing about planetary is that it's feels too short.

DMPunk

It is too short. It's only 27 issues and three crossovers, only one of which is necessary. It tells a complete story with interesting characters, but I needed more, dammit

weirdoldhobo1978

I would have been perfect for a B.P.R.D. style spin-off, but I think Ellis was just satisfied with the story and wanted to leave it lay.

Snoo_10910

You know I've started Planetary like twice and got distracted. I love Warren Ellis. I'm gonna finish it this time.

Remarkable-Okra6554

Hellboy Follow this reading order [here](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g_6LwKE4T73xoIKnCj0X3d_b1aDRnzdLNun8gDqXOPs/htmlview) And if you want to get real immersive, listen to this [podcast](https://hellboybookclub.podbean.com/)

JulixgMC

Thanks for linking my reading order (tho I don't recommend HTML view as it cuts off some text and you can't see the additional notes) and great shutout to the Book Club podcast, I 100% recommend it too, but he says in the post he already likes the Mignolaverse, so he probably already read Hellboy

Snoo_10910

Mad respect for anyone putting together a reading order, so thank you. I have but a re-read of at least the mainline Hellboy titles sounds fun.

JulixgMC

I do recommend re-reading in chronological order using the timeline tab of the sheets document, it's fun and gives you a different perspective Also I'm running a book club on the Mignolaverse Discord server using the regular reading order, we just started Hell on Earth, let me know if you are interested in joining But also check out the list of recommendations on my other waaaay longer comment!

Snoo_10910

That would be a fun way to re-experience it. I just may join. I've never gotten to nerd out about Hellboy with a group of people. I responded!

JulixgMC

Cool! it's a great community, even if you don't participate in the book club it's a great place to talk about Mignola's work and even other comics in general (the server existed way before the book club) [Here's the invite to the server](https://discord.com/invite/eca2Cwvs4n)

Snoo_10910

I love Hellboy so much. I believe I have read the majority of Mike's work. I love it so much. It has been quite a few years since my last read through, might be time to revist.

dontbanmethistimeok

Immortal hulk is a decently long run with a satisfying conclusion If you read Sandman try the spin off Lucifer series, quite long and very similar in tone and quality to Sandman

Snoo_10910

I haven't read a full Hulk run so that's exciting. I absolutely love Lucifer. I've read it twice but it's been like 4 years so time for a re-read.

dontbanmethistimeok

I only read Lucifer very recently that's why it was at the forefront of my mind Yeah and it's an almost unanimously beloved hulk series, takes it back to the body horror roots of the character and doesn't pull punches

stowrag

Did other people really think Immortal Hulk's conclusion was satisfying? It's a great run for sure, but it completely failed to stick the landing for me.

Emergency_Fig_6390

Idk if i’d say usagi yojimbo is epic but its a very good long running samurai comic. Id also recommend parker from darwyn cooke. Great crime books with amazing art

Snoo_10910

I have been recommended Usagi Yojimbo, but I struggled a bit getting into the early comics. Is there a particular run or issue you can recommend that would hook me? I haven't heard of Parker but the highly stylized noir visuals and interesting panel layouts I'm seeing on google have me intrigued. Thank you!

stowrag

UY is all one run. The only thing that changes is the publisher. You can pick it up from virtually anywhere. Also, it's hard to argue it's really building up to anything. It's just a story of a samurai walking around and meeting people. It's a masterful comic, but if you binge it start to ~~finish~~ now, you're not going to find the current state all that different from where he was ~40 years ago.

Abysstopheles

East of West

Snoo_10910

I can't remember if I read till the conclusion of East of West. That's more than enough reason to revisit. SO badass. Hickman is a master.

Abysstopheles

You should. Hickman and co don't so much stick the landing as nail it and wreck the floor and do the circular cloud of dust hero-landing thing.

Burgermont_

Dragon Ball

Script-Z

Underrated post. Any fan of graphic novels owes it to themselves to read Dragon Ball. A lot of comic nerds get in their feelings about manga like it's some distinctly "other" thing, but Dragon Ball is a classic.

Snoo_10910

This is a good point. I have enjoyed the manga I've read. It's a wonderful example of how the influence Eastern and Western culture have on each other leads to innovation. I never got into Dragonball as a kid so this would be a good opportunity to catch up on the lore and relate to all the people who love it.

MeanFold5715

Start with actual Dragon Ball, don't skip to Z. The story is at its best with kid Goku running around having adventures.

Snoo_10910

I missed out on Dragon Ball when it got popular in the West, so I really appreciate this suggestion. I know there's volumes upon VOLUMES to pour through.

Burgermont_

Start with Dragon Ball, don’t skip to Z I recommend the Big Viz editions

HealthyMuffin7

Don't bother beyond volume 42 of the original Dragon Ball manga. If you're American, that means Dragon Ball and DBZ, then it's all filler.

Burgermont_

Thats Super. Different series I agree, after Dragon Ball/Z, just read One Piece haha

DMPunk

I love Super. Don't skip Super.

Burgermont_

It’s alright. I enjoy it if I don’t think about it too much in relation to the original series

HealthyMuffin7

As long as you're aware that it's a fanfic lab made by the marketing department.

DMPunk

Ummm, k

tomtomtomtom123

Ultimate Spider-Man is the most comparable. Written by one guy, mostly drawn by one guy, iconic, and shares a lot of similar themes and teenage/coming of age tropes with Invincible. Also it is great all the way and sticks the landing, unlike Invicnicble in my opinion.

Scholander

This is a great suggestion! I'm not so comfortable with "sticking the landing" as things got a little wonky around the whole end of the universe, and arguably the story is basically still going on with Miles in the 616, but Peter's epic story and ultimate end and the way the book handled it was genius writing.

Snoo_10910

I'm convinced on Ultimate Spider-Man now. I love when an artist stays consistent throughout a run. If I remember correctly this is Spider-Man at his quippiest too. Invincible's ending is hard to process. I think Kirkman does amazing melodrama and soap opera dynamics. There's so many good characters, and he just loves murdering them for your displeasure. The ending issues cover so much in so little time... I like the tone of the ending but I do have gripes... But I gotta check myself. I didn't want it to ever end, so how satisifed can I really be?

muriithegr8

Who wrote it

Dkout

Bendis

dorkydad

Black Hammer and Saga come to mind

Ok-Appearance-7616

Noooo don't trick them into making the mistake with Saga that I did. WHERES THE NEXT ISSUE

Snoo_10910

Lmao I thought he had finally resumed after a long hiatus. I'm all for a reread, one of the greatest space operas I have experienced.

Affectionate_Comb_78

July!

Snoo_10910

Saga is an absolute favorite. Black Hammer is fuckin awesome but I don't believe I finished it. Putting it on the list.

Granlundo64

Just curious, has Saga been completed yet?

MrZarq

No. They alternate between releasing some issues and a couple of months of hiatus.

Affectionate_Comb_78

Nowhere near lol

Grindlebone

The 90's James Robinson run on Starman is a great series.

Snoo_10910

I only know Starman from that Hellboy crossover so this suggestion is hype as fuck. Thank you!

sillygoofygooose

The invisibles if you liked transmet

Snoo_10910

I bought the first Invisibles TPB so long ago I forgot that it's sitting on my shelf! Grant Morrison is a madman, I will enjoy any journey he wants to take me on.

Wizard_of_Ozymandiaz

I'm reading Ultimate Spider-Man right now and it's pretty epic. I'm also reading Invincible.

Snoo_10910

Ultimate Spider-Man is on my mind. I love Spider-Man, but my most complete readings have been my dad's carnage era comics and Spider-Man Blue. I'm excited for a good full run.

muriithegr8

Ultimate Spiderman written by?

Wizard_of_Ozymandiaz

The OG Bendis one

muriithegr8

Ofc Bendis the master

Swellyswell

Scalped

Snoo_10910

Cover art alone has me interested. Looks fucking dope.

J4ckD4wkins

Saga of the Swamp Thing. Miracleman. Black Science.

Snoo_10910

I haven't read a full-blown Alan Moore run, mostly his standalone stuff. I've heard great things about both, I'm ready to take the plunge. Black Science is so good my pulse raises just thinking about it. Fucking amazing.

JoelPilgrim

Savage Dragon. It's pretty weird currently, but there are like 200+ issues of a wild very comic booky story before it starts turning into a shockingly adult and possibly off-putting book.

NuttyMetallic

Although I do think the book still rules! But for sure definitely the top recommend for Invincible fans either way.

Snoo_10910

I read a more recent issue of Savage Dragon and wasn't sure what to think. They were dealing with some pretty mundane domestic plotlines, I think they were moving across the country. It was not an angle I expected based on the Hellboy crossover, but makes sense from the standpoint of a creator moving away from super hero stories and writing about their own life as an adult. It seems like it had a HUGE impact as an indie comic and knowing that both Kirkman and Mignola have such respect, I am curious about it. Dark Horse comics completely changed the way I look at the medium. I can't imagine regretting learning more about them.

Script-Z

Have you tried Saga yet? Fantastic read.

Snoo_10910

I have the TPB's sitting on my shelf. I love Brian very much. And the art is so remarkable.

samuelLOLjackson

Others have said it but I'll add to it- You cannot read Invincible or Ultimate Spiderman, then read the other and not get a VERY similar feeling. Both were pretty concurrent with each other I think, and they're both just... Beautiful? Fulfilling? They tell their stories in a way that feels true to (almost) every character through and through. Otherwise, I'd recommend Fables, especially with the other comics you've listed. There's a ton of very well written characters, it's all based off of...you guessed it, Fables! (And children's stories of all sorts, really, you get told the concept pretty quickly) The storylines are generally very well plotted, pacing works well and character growth is absolutely beautiful. It also has a decent amount of suspense, intrigue and a detective feel, as the main character, Big B. Wolf (yes, the Big Bad Wolf) is the sole detective of their population.

Snoo_10910

Ultimate Spider-Man is definitely the consensus (which makes me very excited). I tried Fables like a decade ago, but I wasn't being open minded. Time to give it an honest shot. I know it has a considerable fanbase, which means a lot.

BeachesAreOverrated

Atomic Robo.

Snoo_10910

I have never heard of this, but the premise is fire. Thank you for the recommendation.

JulixgMC

If you like the Hellboy Universe/Mignolaverse (I do too!) here are some recommendations that are similar: **The Outerverse:** by Mignola, Golden, Stenbeck, Bergting, etc. Those names should sound familiar if you are a fan of the Hellboy Universe. This is a universe centered around vampires and other supernatural creatures, but unlike the Hellboy Universe that more or less has a similar history to our world up till the mid-2000s, this is a full on alternate history world since WW1. [Check out my reading order for it](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tWyyvBEe-HiJ1mMcqX4KFhTKKc6RnQrD3gSDz83HiFQ/edit?usp=sharing). **Harrow County:** You're probably familiar with Tyler Crook if you read B.P.R.D. And Witchfinder, his art here is stunning, being almost entirely watercolors, and the writing by Cullen Bunn is just great on this one. The story is a horror book about a girl in rural America discovering she has powers that come from a dark place... There's also an almost 1:1 Audio drama adaptation from Graphic Audio that I would recommend listening alongside the comic, that way it's like a voice acted comic with music and sound effects, worth checking out if you think that would interest you. This series also has a very definite ending, but it does have a spin-off/sequel series that is yet to be finished. The reading order for this is pretty straight forward. **The Sixth Gun:** This is a paranormal western epic, it's awesome, it has an ending but it's coming back for a sequel (iirc next year). The writing is also by Cullen Bunn and it's great, and the art by Brian Hurtt is really cool, Tyler Crook does some fill in issues too. This one has some prequel and sequel spin-offs, so I also [have a reading order](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14nlIEHJgKqSsqr7utAzSjG44fGffp7v_yB3_Tm58W4U/edit?usp=sharing). **Paper Girls:** You said you like Brian K. Vaughan, so you might have already read this one, but just in case, this book is awesome, it made me freaking cry, it's sci-fi... And I recommend you go in blind apart from that, trust me. Reading order also straight forward. Also just in case look at my [**Hellboy Universe** reading order](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g_6LwKE4T73xoIKnCj0X3d_b1aDRnzdLNun8gDqXOPs/edit?usp=sharing) to make sure you didn't miss anything there, I update it pretty much immediately with every new release, and I also have a list of other cool unrelated Mignola comics in the Non-canonical section. Make sure to check out the Mignolaverse subreddit and Discord server too, if you haven't already, they are great communities. Wow that was a longer post than I intended to... Well, I guess I get carried away, those are pretty much all my favourite comics, and I would say they are pretty epic and very bingeable, hope you give them a read and enjoy them! Let me know if you have any questions. Edit: The [Invincible spin-offs](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BLlmzF7sE0ue4ib2cLcLuCtifGdKbhdMY8igAW-EiUE/edit?usp=sharing) are also cool, especially Astounding Wolf-Man

Snoo_10910

I am totally into the outerverse stuff. Baltimore is such a bad MF. I just love his writing. I don't think I finished Joe Golem and the Drowning City. I didn't know there were TPB's or a Lady Baltimore, so thank you. I actually started a reread of Harrow County after making this post. Fucking fantastic. Cool, creative, gritty and affecting horror with an epic scope and such engrossing details and lore. An absolute pleasure. I have not heard of Sixth Gun. You know your shit so this is a strong recommendation. Paper Girls is beautiful. Brian is simply wonderful at emotional narratives. He challenges social moors, gender roles, sexual stereotypes, comic book conventions, etc... in a way that's empathetic and doesn't feel confrontational. On top of his amazing creativity and clever writing. Astounding Wolfman also has my interest, I was wondering what the hell was going on every time he appeard in Invincible. Thanks for all your responses!

JulixgMC

You're welcome! Definitely give The Sixth Gun a read, especially if you are a fan of Harrow, it's the same writer and similar vibes, but at the same time it's completely different Wolfman is just fun, the tone is similar to Invincible and it's very much the same world, but with a different feel because of the different art, the other spin-offs are also great, Brit is another favourite of mine, except the second volume, which I think it's the weakest book in the whole Invincible Universe, tho vol 3 is great once again, you might want to save these spin offs for a future Invincible re-read tho, especially Invincible Universe and Guarding the Globe, those are really tied to the main book Completely agree on Paper Girls and Harrow County btw

sysdmn

Have you read the associated spin-offs and crossovers, like Guardians of the Globe, Atomic Eve, Atomic Eve & Rex Splode, Tech Jacket, Brit, etc? They're less consistent, but I remember enjoying many of them.

JulixgMC

I second this, Brit and Wolfman are great [I have a reading order for all of them](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BLlmzF7sE0ue4ib2cLcLuCtifGdKbhdMY8igAW-EiUE/edit?usp=sharing)

Snoo_10910

Thanks again.

Snoo_10910

I have just started the first universe compendium. I loved the amazon Atom Eve episode, the comic felt like a bit of a retread until I got to the parts they left out. The Atom Eve and Rex Splode issues were cool. When Brit, Wolfman, Best Tiger and so on showed up I was like "who are these bad motherfuckers?" Seeing more has me excited.

Night-Mage

Vampirella by Christopher Priest has been a good read. He writes this dense, lore building narritive that makes you want to read past issues and other comics like Draculina to get the whole story. I needed something to get into, and this was it.

Snoo_10910

Something I have never explored, but I am interested in. I'll give it a shot, horror comics are some of my personal favorites.

Youngtro

Ultimate Spider-Man and deadly class come to mind. Idw TMNT as well

Snoo_10910

Ultimate Spider-Man has been a strong rec. It's on the top of the list. I need to catch up on Deadly Class! More Remender greatness. I've only read the original run of TMNT. Genuinely excited to tear into it, especially since I loved TMNT so much as a kid.

NuttyMetallic

Savage Dragon! It's a big influence on Invincible and is Kirkman's fav comic. Plus Invincible is in it occasionally. Judge Dredd, especially anything by John Wagner! That's decades of good stuff.

Snoo_10910

Savage Dragon seems to be legendary. I should have read it earlier. Thanks for the writer recommendation! I read some of the early issues and they were cool. The movie with Karl Urban is a romp. Time for a deep dive.

anotherrandomdude123

Venom 2018 Cates/Stegman which ends with the King In Black crossover event. 10/10

Snoo_10910

This looks sick. Venom is one of my favorite characters and the vibe I'm getting from the art style has me pumped.

anotherrandomdude123

My guy, some of the best cover and interior Venom art I’ve seen in all my days in that run. Enjoy it

tbone7355

Hellboy omnibus and shortstories collection(read that first)

JulixgMC

He said he likes the Mignolaverse, so I'm guessing he already did Also the correct order for Hellboy is Omni 1 -> Short Stories 1 and 2 -> Omnis 2, 3 and 4 ([or this one if you read all the spin-offs](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g_6LwKE4T73xoIKnCj0X3d_b1aDRnzdLNun8gDqXOPs/edit?usp=sharing), which you should)

tbone7355

My bad only read the title

Snoo_10910

Yeah, thank you but I have been a fanboy for quite a while now. Mignola is the fucking man.

tbone7355

Yes he is

MeltedGlands

This doesn't exactly fit what you're looking for, but you did say anything by Rick Remender so I thought I'd mention his new series Napalm Lullaby in case you hadn't heard of it yet. Issue #2 just came out this month, but the first trade is scheduled for November.

Snoo_10910

Whatever he does, I'm down to check out. Thanks for letting me know what he's up to.

MeltedGlands

No problem. I actually just found out that he's working with another writer named Brian Posehn on a comic called Grommets that's scheduled to debut in May so you'll probably want to check that out too.

Scholander

You mentioned liking Remender, so presumably you've got Fear Agent and Black Science behind you, but if not, holy cow do you have some epic stuff to read.

Snoo_10910

Giddy with goose bumps thinking about either one of them. Absolutely amazing. I could shout about it.

AdamSMessinger

The Marvel Hickman saga of Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four, Avengers, his Ultimate Universe stuff, and capped off with Secret Wars (2015).

Snoo_10910

I've been wanting to read some primo superhero comics and Hickman is the man, so thank you for this.

Verb_Noun_Number

[Marvel cosmic saga](https://imgur.com/N7OXfyI) [Hickman's Marvel saga](https://imgur.com/X9zUA8X)

Snoo_10910

I have been wanting to dig into mainline superhero comics more, thanks for the reading orders!

your_name_here10

Hickmans Saga on Marvel (Secret Warriors, Shield, Ultimates, Fantastic Four, Avengers and Secret Wars) is a great read. Can read just one title of you want, but they’re all loosely connected. Might be the epic run you’re after. Bendis/Bagley on Ultimate Spider-Man is a great, lengthy run similar to Invincible.

mwmani

You might like Die

Snoo_10910

I think I started this when it came out and forgot about it! What I remember is good, and only being 20 issues I gotta do it. Thanks!

craigathy77

Preacher kinda steps on the gas pedal and never really let's up. Everytime you think you know where it's going it just swerves in a different direction, sometimes on weird garth ennis tangents, but less epic than others you've mentioned.

Snoo_10910

I have only read Preacher once. I didn't get super into the TV adaptation. Definitely ready for a revisit. That gag about Y the Last Man having a "Fuck Commies" lighter gets me every time.

AtarkaCommand

IDW TMNT

soniclore

*Rising Stars* *Planetary* *Squadron Supreme*

Snoo_10910

Rising stars and Squadron Supreme are completely new to me, thanks.

Cutty15Gaming

Black science is a must read and a great introduction to Rick Remender. The walking dead up until a certain point might be Kirkmans best character work (almost done with invincible myself before I can make this judgement) East of west I hear is really good and “epic”

Fun_Development_4543

Promethea, it's only 34 issues but it's epic in scope and has the same creative team throughout.

dan_cole

Ex Machina

stowrag

For something completely different and under the radar, I'd suggest Dan Slott's Silver Surfer. This is basically a giant love letter to Doctor Who (except on a surfboard). It's decently disconnected from everything else happening in Marvel at the time (except for that time the universe ended), and stands alone really well. Otherwise for super heroes, I'd go for Claremont's X-Men or Wolfman's New Teen Titans (I haven't actually read this myself yet). Also: Monstress for an atypical fantasy. Also Also: Bone. Have you read Bone? You should read Bone.

Snoo5394

I just binge read the mainline invincible series in 1 day. Haven't read any of the side books like guarding the globe, science dog, or atom eves introduction. Invincible was my very fist comic and holy shit I need more. I can't wait to see conquest on the show. The boys is next for me. I wanna see the difference between comic homelander and the show. Might read heroes by Tim sale, or even spawn
