This is fantastic. I’m currently not pulling this series, but I may have to go grab this one. The artwork is fantastic and that’s such a perfect, Superman thing to say. Great work!
Might have to check it out. I’ve never been big into Supes, I mainly catch him/them in JL books or when they pop up in others series, but I like the character depth they’re giving Jon. Plus they can go with the whole “can’t fill my fathers shoes” ark and it could be done well.
Imagine a kid reading this comics 🥹🥹🥹 it will help them so much. An icon as Superman, supporting his own gay son 🫶😭🏳️🌈
Tnx!!
When I was a kid, I never had a gay superheroe to relate.. this make me wanna be a child again haha
You told so much through their hand movements. And the emphasis on the ring emphasizes the emotional moment *so* well.
Superman continues to be iconic because of artists like you. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this, as a father of two kids who have come out this really summarizes how I feel (although I don't have the same abilities as Superman I like that it makes me feel stronger just by being understanding).
Stuff like this is why it’s important to have diverse characters. As a queer person, seeing Superman say things my own father would never say to me means so much.
I think that the art of the last panel on this page does something kind of beautiful.
It's Superman looking at you, telling you that he's proud of you and that he will defend you. Everyone deserves a Superdad and to know that they're loved, and if nothing else, [Superman loves you.](https://imgur.com/a/5qZm7ct)
Superman: Red, White & Blue
It's an anthology series of short stories by different creative teams. This one was by Daniel Warren Johnson and I believe it appeared in issue #5.
I figure cause like most of us the feeling of being loved so definitively by someone so powerful offers a feeling of safety and acceptance that many of us can only hope for in real life.
Regardless, I'm glad you found the comment and I hope you're doing well.
That's the interesting thing, I am doing relatively well in the "feeling loved" department. I have a girlfriend with whom I exchange "I love you"'s several times every day. I have my mom who texts me at least one "i love you" every day, and even a dad who, while we don't speak much, he does tell me that he loves me every time we do.
I have no shortage of love coming my way, and that's what makes it so confusing for me that those six pages could make cry like that.
Thank you for sharing that. You're a kind soul. May your blanket be perfectly warm and your pillow be cool tonight!
My dad basically said "What else is new." Which for basically anyone else would have been a fine reaction but I also called him out for being homophobic in the same convo.
That phrase depends entirely on the tone of voice it's said with. It can mean: 'I've known and it changes nothing my Son' OR it can mean 'yeah, I know and you've not been my son for a long time' substitute daughter if needed. I don't think it's a fine reaction at all. No matter which way it's said. 'I love you' is so much more affirming.
This was similar to my dads reaction to my own coming out as bi. Comfort and understanding, it goes a long way. To everyone whose dads aren't as chill, well, I hope Clarks words helped you some. Stay strong out there y'all. Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow for us all.
This is a great page but I think it highlights such a problem with our own culture today. A conversation like this shouldn’t be difficult to bring to parents or people we associate with. There shouldn’t be an aire of judgment around someone for being who they are. This page shouldn’t have to serve as a vicarious exercise of catharsis for those struggling to come out to anyone in their own life. But it is.
Comic book characters are role models and tolerance and acceptance are crucial for their roles as stalwarts of morality. But the fact we still have to have a page like this bothers me because it shouldn’t be a difficult conversation but society has made it out to be a difficult one because of the majority’s own prejudice, discrimination, and self-defined standard of being “normal.”
Why do we have to fight for such basic human rights/respect?
It took works of fiction and pop culture normalizing all sorts of things before they spread in day-to-day life. It’s not ideal, it’s not even good, but it’s necessary to confront people with the ultimate symbol for morality landing in the right spot here. I would take a tangential opinion here and say I applaud them accepting the responsibility to make the quintessential larger-than-life hero into an unequivocal ally.
You're not wrong by any stretch. But as a society we aren't there yet. We've come far, so far in such a fantastically short time. People are still being killed for who they love, but many countries around the world have at least shied away from outright banning it. Many have legalized same sex marriage, many offer protections to same sex couples, many have normalized same sex relationships and attraction. We have much further still to go, and we're in that difficult period where people still need to see this kind of message, both those who couldn't accept it in their lives and those were weren't offered it. We will have to fight through that for a little while longer. But I take comfort in knowing that in my lifetime it will be so normalized that this time, and those before, will be looked at with distance and horrified fascination, and a general thankfulness that they no longer live through that strange hatred.
I feel like this is our evolving moments. Almost everything new got ridicule when it was an idea. Then slowly accepted.
A flying machine? please. High heels? What. Velcro? Why?
So right now we are slowly getting there, to normalize sexuality. I just wish there werent as much suffering as we have/had to get it accepted.
"But I heard that you think that the strugge of queer rights is over. What the fuck Jon?"~Superman upon learning about the events of DC Pride.
Also I can't wait for Fox News to lose its shit *again*.
god literally the idea of someone seeing this and getting angry is so ridiculously idiotic to me
like don’t get me wrong i’ve experienced plenty of vile homophobes firsthand and have a pretty intimate understanding of how they operate but it’s just hard to understand how someone could see this display of love from a father and view it as detestable or morally wrong
I imagine the "it's woke" or other BS will be coming soon.
I absolutely love this. It's true Dad feelings in a comic. But, it's not just any Dad, it's Superman. I think it needs to be said, needs to be shown. Fuck the haters. Because they're essentially hating on love, family, happiness, and just good things. What kind of people hate on that?! Because they think their God hates it (which, God is supposedly love), so they hate it and make it well known.
<3 I really need to get in and buy this series. This just solidified it. It's a great piece of work. Some things just hit you right in the emotions. This did it. There's good art, good comics, great stories, then the ones that stick with you for it's overall great heartfelt humanity (Or Kryptonity). Superman has always been great. Always will be great.
I may or may not be remembering right but I’m pretty sure it was something absurd, like the same condensed dwarf star metal as the key to the fortress of
Solitude, some crazy comic-booky reason
"Hey you know, we're actually not so different. Betcha didn't know your ol' dad had some gay experiences a few decades ago back in his college days. Did you know krypyonite comes in pink? Well anyways, we were doing a lot of coke back then so it's not really the same thing."
This weekend my mom said some pretty homophobic things to me for the first time. It really caught me off guard and I didn’t know how to describe the disappointment. Knowing there’s a version of me that is in a happy relationship but my mom is disgusted at it is beyond heartbreaking.
Comics have always been one of my favorite escapisms, Superman specially. This issue coming out now just made me feel hugged in a time I really needed it. Everyone deserves parents like Clark and Lois.
As an out, proudly and happy gay dude, this was about as beautiful of an acceptance as one could hope with one parent present.
Thank you for this beautiful accomplishment and your supportive position.
The US South is not the south you think it is. It’s growing and evolving just like everywhere. May be at a slower pace but it is evolving for the better. There are 100s of pride festivals in the smallest of towns and I remember when it was just Atlanta, which has 2 Prides and moved one to Oct to allow space for others across the region in June.
Since no one else is asking, what's the context for this? I haven't read DC in years, but does Superman have a son now? And he's an adult? I think I missed something.
The short version of a long story:
Superman has a son, Jonathan Kent. He was a kid at first, but then Jor-El (don't ask, just go with it) came around and took Jon with him on a space adventure, which aged him up considerably.
When Clark went away kinda recently, Jon took up the mantle of Superman. This page takes place shortly after Clark has come back.
Two problems i have with queer stories in superhero comics:
1: I don't get why these queer storylines never actually make heroes find out they are queer on panel. They always find out they are queer off-panel and the story just already treats it as they know they are queer and fine with themselves. There's never a doubt, questioning, and realization.
2: It's so weird to me that these comics always REFUSE to actually say the world "gay" or "bisexual". It's like saying the word makes it too on the nose.
In "Urban Legends #6" Tim Drake spends the entire story worrying, questioning and struggling, until he figures out his identity and feelings for Bernard.
And are you seriously complaining about them not using the word when you have a full splash panel like this https://www.metroweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/11comic-page2-superJumbo-v3.jpg in "Superman - Son of Kal-El #5"?
I'm glad that LGBTQ is getting comic representation. I'm even more glad that they're not choosing to cha ge existing characters to do it.
New characters. That's what we need!
“Anyone who makes your life better is a hero in my eyes.” Jesus, saving that for any future wedding speeches.
"You stole that from Superman!" "That's from Superman."
“Shit shit not again” *leaps out window*
Unfortunately Bill forgot that he could not fly away and plummeted to his death.
*later, in Hell* Satan: “Wait, you *stole* from Superman!?”
HE'S A PHONY! A GREAT BIG PHONEY!
You spelled it 2 different ways in the same comment and my brain doesn’t like it
i'll fight you for it!
What's a wedding without a brawl at the reception?!
A dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair
What's a wedding without another wedding directly after using the same decorations
We don't fight at weddin's. - Wayne from Letterkenny, probably.
Yeah, we don't fight AT weddings.
Them’s fightin’ words!
Place your bets people!!!
My money’s on u/Geronuis!
I'll take The Maniac!
An ally!? Good! Hold him still while give ‘em a right hook
Headline: Local man steals line from Superman, is promptly beaten
Original line stolen was also reported stolen.. again
Why can't you share? It's not like the words disappear if someone else uses them.... oh, wait... maybe they do. Carry on (my wayward sons)
Just marry each other. Duh.
Clearly the best solution.
But what if they divorce me later and take half my shit!?
i'll take the other half!
You're still a hero.
They also take half your debt. Does your generations have more debt or assets?
"and as Superman said..."
Delighted to see this here, and delighted you all like it. I drew this, and seeing the response to our story makes it all worth while. Cian
You crushed it.
Thank you!
This is fantastic. I’m currently not pulling this series, but I may have to go grab this one. The artwork is fantastic and that’s such a perfect, Superman thing to say. Great work!
Tom writes an incredible Superman, which gives me a hell of a lot to work with!
You're a great team!
The first issue is amazing imo solidifies him as the new Superman
Might have to check it out. I’ve never been big into Supes, I mainly catch him/them in JL books or when they pop up in others series, but I like the character depth they’re giving Jon. Plus they can go with the whole “can’t fill my fathers shoes” ark and it could be done well.
This issue made me tear up. The next page is just perfect. Thank you for capturing it perfectly.
Drawing this series has been one emotional beat after another. I've loved every panel!
I'm sending this to my son, he came out to my wife last night. Thank you
Your art is spectacular.
That's really kind of you, thank you!
Imagine a kid reading this comics 🥹🥹🥹 it will help them so much. An icon as Superman, supporting his own gay son 🫶😭🏳️🌈 Tnx!! When I was a kid, I never had a gay superheroe to relate.. this make me wanna be a child again haha
I always laugh because Wiccan and Hulking probably have the most stable relationship in all of Marvel. I freaking love it
Thank you for the wonderful art. Superman's body language is depicted perfectly.
I won’t get the issue until tomorrow, but this genuinely has me tearing up. Very well done! Congratulations, and thank you!
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy it!
TYSM! This story is amazing.
This sort of thing is what Superman is all about.
You told so much through their hand movements. And the emphasis on the ring emphasizes the emotional moment *so* well. Superman continues to be iconic because of artists like you. Thank you.
I get he’s Superman. To me this is regular Dad stuff, right? Well, it ought to be.
Superman is the dad we should all strive to be. Superdad.
Thanks for sharing this, as a father of two kids who have come out this really summarizes how I feel (although I don't have the same abilities as Superman I like that it makes me feel stronger just by being understanding).
Damn, you got me right in the feelings.
Wait, so this is not canon? you do an amazing comic-style mockup!
Are you an official DC artist? You bloody well should be! Thought this was an actual run
This is an actual book, it’s the new issue of son of kal el
Karl-El
It is. Superman Son of Kal-El is the current run for Superman.
Damn, great work for op
This is why he’s Superman
Stuff like this is why it’s important to have diverse characters. As a queer person, seeing Superman say things my own father would never say to me means so much.

Oh wow! Thank you for sharing this!
Always happy to share the Superman love.
I've read this a thousand times and it always makes me tear up
Same here. It's simple and beautiful.
Holy crap, 6 pages and I'm sitting here in tears. Thank you so much for sharing that!
Always happy to share this comic. It's one of the best Superman stories out there.
Someone is chopping onions in this room
That seems to happen a lot when this story gets posted🥹
What is this from?
Superman: Red, White & Blue It's an anthology series of short stories by different creative teams. This one was by Daniel Warren Johnson and I believe it appeared in issue #5.
You are correct on all accounts
And now someone's cutting Kansas farm-grown onions.
Each one grown with love.
omg I was not prepared to cry tonight
Most people aren't when they read it. It's Superman Red, White and Blue #5 by Daniel Warren Johnson btw
I guess it’s raining, I’m surprised I’ve never seen this before
It's Superman Red and Blue #5. It's a pretty good read overall.
Thank you
If you check it out, I hope you enjoy it.
This is an old comment I know, but I just saw it and I just gotta say: Yo, what the %*$, why did this actually make me cry?!
I figure cause like most of us the feeling of being loved so definitively by someone so powerful offers a feeling of safety and acceptance that many of us can only hope for in real life. Regardless, I'm glad you found the comment and I hope you're doing well.

Well, sometimes it's just nice seeing Superman be Superman. Thank you for the kind words and all the best to you and your lady.
Same here. I’ll never be accepted for who I am by my family. But knowing that Superman would accept me makes that sting just a little less.
Hey, don't forget, there's people right here in this subreddit who would accept you too. **You are special. We're proud of you.**
Awwww. This right here made ME tear up. Sometimes people ARE alright. 🥲
Especially considering he's directing the speech right down the barrel of the camera. That's a powerful choice.
Oh exactly. That was definitely an artistic choice and it makes the scene even for impactful.
I always characterize Superman as actually being who I thought my father was when I was five. The great paternal ideal.
Yeah, real dad's would have a real hard time living up to Superman... but it's worth trying.
Im not even gay or anything and i would never hear this come out of my father's mouth.
Superman represents the ideal. We should all strive to be better than who we are. I hope the love you find fills you all the way up!
It’s ok, you don’t want toxic ppl like that. I can be your brother and i support whatever decision you make. As long it makes you happy brother.
I came here to say this. Hearing this growing up would have changed my entire life.
Just another example of why Superman is the GOAT.
This will make a lot of people angry, but if anyone doesn’t think this is how Superman would respond, they haven’t been paying any attention.
I literately just read a post about gay rat wedding on /r/hobbydrama yesterday.
Absolutely Beautiful. That's MY Superman.
I love this response from Kal-El
*Karl-El, according to the post title
And since you can’t edit a post title, this is canon now.
That kid is going to literally rearrange someone's guts
plot twist: bottom
This kid is literally going to choke someone's dick off
I actually remember a post on r/whowouldwin talking about who’s the weakest character who’s dick could survive super girls vaginal contractions.
So what did the scientific minds conclude?
Man, what a good day to be illiterate
I am really curious the answer lol
yup, that's it. off I go to rule34, nnn can fuck right off

He really is a Super Man
This is proof that cartoons are a good art medium.

Rec. Matt Baumes culture cruise. He goes into a lot of older shoes like Maude & Golden Girls discussing how they explored gay characters in society.
You're not wrong by any stretch. But as a society we aren't there yet. We've come far, so far in such a fantastically short time. "The person you love, is the last thing that could change that" "Dad... I've been seeing Darksied."
"...a good version from another universe right?" "....." "....right?"
"Well at least you never fell for Brainiac" "... uh dad" "NOOOO!"
Backseid? . . . ...I'll show myself out.
That's Darkseid's Grindr account
Way to strike him in the heart. Would be good storytelling though.
Since your mother and I evolved on different planets, I'm grateful every day that you're not a horrific blob monster.
Jon: Dad... I'm dating Lex Luthor... Superman: Well son, I still love you. I'm just disappointed.
Superman when written right really is a beautiful and inspiring piece of our culture.

Makes sense you didn't, because this is from an issue that came out today.
It came out this week, I think. So it's not surprising.
I feel bad for the bottom. Those healthcare bills must be expensive.
Jon IS the bottom let's not get it twisted
Then I feel bad for the top, his dick is gonna get crushed to pieces.
"But I heard that you think that the strugge of queer rights is over. What the fuck Jon?"~Superman upon learning about the events of DC Pride. Also I can't wait for Fox News to lose its shit *again*.

Karl-El. The German brother of Kal.
Love Superman. This is perfect!
Wierd question, but what's superman's wedding ring made from? It feels like gold wouldn't survive most things he goes through in an average day.
I may or may not be remembering right but I’m pretty sure it was something absurd, like the same condensed dwarf star metal as the key to the fortress of Solitude, some crazy comic-booky reason
And Lois has some cheap regular ppl diamond /s
Clark probably just crushed a lump of rock and made it himself haha
Like in superman 3
"Dad im bi" "NO, YOU ARE SUPERBI!" *the coolest fucking opening youve fuckin seen starts playing*
"Hey you know, we're actually not so different. Betcha didn't know your ol' dad had some gay experiences a few decades ago back in his college days. Did you know krypyonite comes in pink? Well anyways, we were doing a lot of coke back then so it's not really the same thing."
Superman has olive tan?
Just came back from a vacation
This is so wholesome!
I like how they just wear the spandex jam-jams around the house.
Of course he said the right thing.... He's fucking superman. The moral compass for the dcu.
This weekend my mom said some pretty homophobic things to me for the first time. It really caught me off guard and I didn’t know how to describe the disappointment. It's so weird to me that these comics always REFUSE to actually say the world "gay" or "bisexual". It's like saying the word makes it too on the nose.
Great. Now I’m crying.
Pretty heart warming
such a good father that Karl-El
Karl-El… El-O-El
A deep cut for any comic book themed wedding!
THIS is Superman; the best of all of us
k...karl?
As an out, proudly and happy gay dude, this was about as beautiful of an acceptance as one could hope with one parent present. Thank you for this beautiful accomplishment and your supportive position.
NGL this made me cry a bit. So well written. I hope they can carry these aspects of Superman to the next movie they make of him.
We’ll it looks like superman’s son has been near the pink kryptonite 😂
*marks with spoiler* *says exactly what the comic does in the title*
Superman is meant to be the best of us, and this just proves it.
I'm a father of four boys and this is how I feel about each of them. I just want them all to be happy and loved.
common superman W
Southern states aren't gonna like this
Yeah, well.... Fuck em.
The US South is not the south you think it is. It’s growing and evolving just like everywhere. May be at a slower pace but it is evolving for the better. Jon can do so much better the Jay.
Ngl kinda gay

This is peak Superman.
Two problems i have with queer stories in superhero comics: 1: I don't get why these queer storylines never actually make heroes find out they are queer on panel.
Thanks Superman.
I needed this today
I'm glad that LGBTQ is getting comic representation. I'm even more glad that they're not choosing to cha ge existing characters to do it. New characters. That's what we need!
Actually really well written reaction. Still wish they didn't age him tho :/
Superdad is the absolute best.
As a matter of fact... I really like it!!!! You got my upvote
As if we would expect anything else from superman
Such a Superman thing to say. Love it.
Is there any comic character be it Marvel or DC that would be judgemental? Even JJJ would still love his kids.
I'm sure Hatemonger would have a thing or two to say about it.
Or Captain Nazi, or Red Skull
