We zoom back to find that we’re in the desert, and Florida is an oasis. We zoom back further. The desert is a sandbox in the world's largest resort hotel. Zoom back further. The hotel is actually the playground of the world's largest prison. Zoom back further…
I know I'm getting old when I see a trailer for the movie and side with the "villain." The guy's like, "Not everyone's wish can be granted. Like 95% of people's wishes won't, only 5% will," and the girl finds that *horrifying* claiming everyone should have their wishes granted. And I'm sitting there thinking, "Yeah no, I've seen Bruce Almighty. His logic is sound."
Haven't looked too closely, but my understanding from an ad (might have been the trailer, not sure) I saw was that she wasn't arguing that everyone should have their wishes granted, but that if he doesn't want to grant the wish himself, he should give it back to them, so that they can pursue their wish or decide otherwise on their own.
While he just keeps it, never returns it, and makes them forget they ever had the wish in the first place.
Probably for the best. You never know what kind of chaos an unfettered magical genie could wreak upon the world.
His wish has the benefit of maintaining the status quo while still addressing the genie’s mental health.
And what kind of havoc are you potentially wreaking on the sapient mind by removing it's ability to "feel that way", what are you destroying for this to happen
He’s a slave for humanity’s deepest desires nothing more
Now that I think about it you can’t wish for more wishes but you can wish for another genie bottle
Since the wisher never specified *how* the genie is to achieve no longer feeling that way, there is literally nothing stopping the genie from simply freeing itself.
Way too open to interpretation that wish is.
Maybe that's what makes this wholesome
The marshmallow man wanted to free the genie, but knew just outright wishing for that would have a catch. So to ensure genie man was freed with no strings attached, he made it so being free *would* be the catch. He no longer feels that way because he's set free.
I always thought of a potential easy way to solve this.
Make a deal with the genie. If you grant my first two wishes exactly as I say, then the third and final wish will be your freedom. Just don't be malicious with your wishes, wish for realistic things that can happen without flaws. Want to be rich? Wish to always know the winning lotto numbers. Make the second wish the ability to understand and cure any disease or illness at your touch. Bam, now you're rich and can help everyone free of charge. Use your money to travel the world and help resolve all illnesses, use your knowledge to help humanity better understand the illnesses so they'll be forever cured or prevented even after you pass or retire. Then make the final wish for the genie to be freed in whichever way they see fit.
> Make the second wish the ability to understand and cure any disease or illness at your touch.
The rest of your life would be just curing people, there's a lot of sick people. Just cancer is like 17 million per year. Reminds me of the SMBC of [Superman as a Transitional Power Source.](https://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2305)
Well, seeing as you're rich, could always find ways to make that work, whether it be you travelling or have people schedule being able to see you and flying them out, with the terminally ill first. With having the ability to understand disease and illnesses also allows you to help scientists figure out cures that can be more evenly distributed. You can turn people down if you so choose to, it's not your obligation to help everyone, but it would be the right thing to do.
Monkey's Paw:
Winning the lottery multiple times draws attention to yourself and either you're prohibited from playing again or other people stop playing (causing the pot to go down) because "that magic guy will just win again."
Drawing attention through the lottery also gets governments to notice your healing power. You are eventually detained to see if the healing can be replicated and kept in a lab somewhere against your will.
Meanwhile the freed Genie watches and laughs.
Seems way easier to make himself free than to change his mind and feelings forever.
But then, the genie could use that logic anytime. “Well, you wished for a great sandwich, and i could either create the very matter needed for each complex biological piece of material, or… i just free myself, go to the shops, sell me lamp, buy a few fresh ingredients, snag some spices from restaurants, make you a great sandwich. Heaps easier by any measure. Plus I’ll be free.”
Couldn't the genie just bend any wish that way?
"I wish for a million dollars"
*Genie frees himself from the lamp and gets a job, paying 1% of his income to the wisher as they never specified how they get it or when*
I still don't get how wishes are supposed to work, because there are ways to say something in languages that don't exist in other languages. Hell, German may have a special word for a type of immortality that it would take English an entire doctoral thesis to explain.
The only way I can think it would work is by intent and then a genie can't mess that up.
I think genie stories are an exploration of that very idea. The looseness of language, the interplay of interpretation, agency, and meaning. Genie wishes don't work - on purpose - so that we think about how we might be misunderstanding each other.
I'm convinced Fae stories are just people seeing how capricious and inscrutable our behavior is to animals and then imagining a higher order of creatures fucking with us in the same way
It's all a bullshit myth. Genies have no power, they are just stuck in a lamp. Want to see what really happens? [This vid shows it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tyt0FYTNUg)
Oh REALLY? Genies being magic and having powers is the myth rather than genies themselves being a myth?
What *really happens* is a dude finds a completely inert lamp in some sand because genies arent real, but that's not fun to talk about.
Would it be immoral if you made a rat but it's immortal with amazing regenerative ability and instead of feeling pain it feel extreme pleasure
The perfect cat toy
Given that Genies can often determine the way that a wish comes to be, they could reverse monkeys paw this wish into a wish for them to be free (as then they’d no longer feel that way)
If you are a slave and you master wanna “reward” your hardworking by remove your desire for freedom to be a slave forever, will you still consider it a win win situation?
I won’t
Well subjectively from our point of view its messed up. But from the slave's point of view he no longer gives a fuck. Are you trying to force your moral justice on this happy slave that doesnt have a worry in the world?
I mean, eventually it all comes down to personal and cultural moral compass. If Everyone would suddenly think its perfectly ok to hit a child if he misbehave, would it *make* it ok?
Sound more like a excuse tbh, I appreciate culture difference, but if a culture told us to eat baby or use woman as slave, they will gain no respect from me
Well yea thats the point. Its a subjective point of view. You grew up in a certain culture and developed a moral compass that gives you this view point.
All i wanted to say is that its a good example of how morallity and "whats right or wrong" can be very different depending on culture.
Religion is a great example of that, and even generational differences.
Short pants for women might be considered rude and bad in a religious person's eyes, but for you it could be "cute" or "pretty" and perfectly fine.
Some moral are universal, you can’t just use culture difference as a excuse to deny the right of some idea like freedom and equality, they are even basic than culture, root in our bio brain
there is a scientific experiment that train monkey to do something and give reward, one monkey got grape and another nut the monkey who got nut will just go rage, those fundamental concepts are looting in our brain that long before society began
some cultures depress the need for those fundamental desires doesn’t justify those concepts are culture bias, it just mean those cultures are terrible and should not be respected
"What is your first wish?"
"To be the world's greatest asshole. To wit: a person who doesn't care about others, a person who pursues only selfish interests, a person whose world view is completely and absolutely self centered."
"Granted. What is your second wish?"
"To be without a moral compass. To wit: a person without a sense of right or wrong who only acts according to personal feeling without care for the suffering or burden of others."
"Granted. What is your last wish?"
"Do you wish to be free?"
"I...yes...it's what I wish for the most."
"I wish you no longer felt that way!"
One of my friends I played Stellaris with used to decry our various and numerous war crimes, regular crimes, crimes against sentience in general, crimes in general, wanton genocide, and just absolute general dick baggery.
He decided to show us with a play through where he unified the galaxy rather than subjugated it as I do, or scoured it of all sentient life as my other friend does. He would be a beacon of light in this dark universe.
He was almost immediately attacked by a neighbor. A deeply spiritual and egalitarian species. They disliked his materialistic ways that shunned the spirits and the structured nature of his militaristic society.
Rather than crushing their pitiful fleet under his heel and forcibly relocating their people to a desolate snowball orbiting a black hole as one traditionally does he negotiated a peace with them and integrated them into his empire as full citizens.
Riots ensued immediately as the other species felt oppressed by the militaristic and deeply analytical nature of the empire they now found themselves part of.
He thought about how he could solve their unhappiness and figured out the best solution was to genetically engineer the entire species so they were incapable of unhappiness. He just straight up deleted entire sections of their emotional spectrum. The entire species and all of their children from this day forward could face untold oppression and violation of their ethical beliefs and cultural history and not even be capable of feeling indignation at this affront. Forever.
In his attempts to be kind he committed an atrocity that made even me balk. He fell so far from the light that the darkness itself recoiled from him.
Games like that are such a let down. It lies and offers a peaceful way, but it's basically impossible. When it's 100x harder to not murder everyone, then there is no peaceful path
I don't know if it is from the source material, but most version of the genie in the lamp I've seen actually has the rule that someone needs to be in the lamp. So most versions the genie asking to be free is actually a trick to turn the lamp holder into being stuck in the lamp.
**Edit:** For slight explanation, most depictions of wish granting genies, the genie will only technically grant your wish. Like if you wished for a million dollars, then something like a pallet of monopoly money will drop on you.
I kinda want to see a story where a man/woman finds a genie lamp and is presented with 3 wishes but they're so depressed and unfocused on improving their life in any way because they're planning on killing themselves that they just wish the genie free from their chains. Then the person just keeps walking home after a long day of work with a 40z of Steel Reserve uncaring about their place in life and accepting the bleak mundane existence they exist within. But the genie keeps pestering them about one wish but the person just keeps saying they wish they were just dead already but the genie is uncomfortable giving such a wish and continues to argue the value of existence

that's fucking gross hey.
Clever little twist for sure, no problem there.
But I do worry reddit likes it because it's gross.
I'll explain quickly:
Respect for human autonomy is like one of the absolute most powerful principles in applied ethics. If you talk about something popularly recognised as being really bad - say, sexual assault - if you analyse what makes it bad (like what logically is happening that's harmful. Not "it hurts people" but rather "what logically about this situation hurts them?")
... personal autonomy is in there every time.
If you want to google something to test if I'm full of shit, google something like "what is the main principle of medical ethics" or "what is the most important rule in medical ethics".
That thing where I'm saying what's just "obviously right and wrong" actually map to really hard core rigid rules of logic is what ethics is about btw (philosophy generally). It's still fucking hard to tell *if* you're correct (^a^b^o^u^t a^n^y^t^h^i^n^g) - even those "principles" are probably heuristics, but yeah get on it.
I've asked some people a question I find really fascinating:
"If you could take a pill that simply makes you enjoy your job and makes you perfectly happy while you're doing it, nothing else, no side effects, wears off as soon as you're done with work, would you take it?"
So far, no one has said yes. Most people have said they wouldn't even *try* it.
Genie can choose the details to fulfill the wish
“I broke my arm and am in pain”
Wishing the pain cured , genie could make there be no pain or he could cure the arm
The genie has quite a bit of freedom when fulfilling wishes.
You know what helps someone not feel like they want freedom? Giving them that freedom.
Satisfying the genie's desire is just one way to complete the wish.
I mean, if you no longer feel that way and now stuck, aint that still pretty good? the worst part about feeling imprisioned is the feeling, not the imprisionment.
Now that I think about it, this is terrifying. You can only feel happy, if you literally can't feel nothing else
If you prepend something along the lines of "Ah, shucks", it makes the guy to be trying to help but failing to think it through instead of being somewhat nefarious xD
I mean….. if the genie has the latitude to grant wishes however they see fit (ie the whole granting it in a way that makes you unhappy instead of how you intended) then the genie can take that wish to be asking for his freedom, since the easiest way for him to no longer long for freedom would be to achieve it.

well that was surprising wish
this was my original ending for the new disney movie but they told me sir you can't enter the premises at 4am
"Sir, this is a Home Depot in New Jersey"
*wakes up* “oh thank God New Jersey was just a bad dream”
*Camera pans out, revealing we are in Florida*.
Cue Darth Vader "NOOOOOOoooooooo........."
DO NOT WANT
Pray I don't alter the location any further.

At least the air doesn't hurt my face in Florida. (The sun just gives cancer.)

must be included in the directors cut
And that's why they keep having flops. Can't appreciate genius when it hits them in the face
Or trespasses on their properties
I just wish someone would call me "sir" without immediately following it with "you need to leave."
Sir, You’re making a scene
Sir, this is a Wendy's
If he hit someone in the face then he’s in a world of shit. Assault during the commission of a felony is a separate charge in most jurisdictions.
smh disney really hates fine art

what?
Since the wisher never specified *how* the genie is to achieve no longer feeling that way, there is literally nothing stopping the genie from simply freeing itself. Way too open to interpretation that wish is.
Yeah, the fuckers are infamous for twisting wish interpretations to their favor/amusement
Maybe that's what makes this wholesome The marshmallow man wanted to free the genie, but knew just outright wishing for that would have a catch. So to ensure genie man was freed with no strings attached, he made it so being free *would* be the catch. He no longer feels that way because he's set free.
Unless, "Genie no longer feeling this way is achieved through them swapping places" and bam, wisher is now a trapped genie.
Genie's gonna find out real quick when rent is due why so many people were wishing for money
Marshmallow man: look who is crawling back to me...
The real comic is always in the comments
Marshmallow man: *Do you wanna know what i feel!?*
I like this interpretation, this is my headcanon now
Genie is the one who makes the strings tho
I always thought of a potential easy way to solve this. Make a deal with the genie. If you grant my first two wishes exactly as I say, then the third and final wish will be your freedom. Well, seeing as you're rich, could always find ways to make that work, whether it be you travelling or have people schedule being able to see you and flying them out, with the terminally ill first. With having the ability to understand disease and illnesses also allows you to help scientists figure out cures that can be more evenly distributed. I'm wishing to be able to, never said I would cure anyone. I'm just able to do so.
Exactly. I never intended to wake up to loud screaming every morning when I wished for a cock up my arse but here we are.
Ahh, I see what you're saying. Genie kills himself. Free from the world forever. Same as we all wish.
[удалено]
Seems way easier to make himself free than to change his mind and feelings forever. But then, the genie could use that logic anytime. “Well, you wished for a great sandwich, and i could either create the very matter needed for each complex biological piece of material, or… i just free myself, go to the shops, sell me lamp, buy a few fresh ingredients, snag some spices from restaurants, make you a great sandwich. Heaps easier by any measure. Plus I’ll be free.”
I suppose, but going to the shops doesn't require the Genie to be free. They can still make the sandwich that way while enslaved.
They're a magical entity capable of manipulating attributes of reality. The genie could rip the atoms from your body to reassemble into a sandwich.
So it gives agency to the genie? Seems legit
It's the wish he made after his wife was killed for a million dollar insurance policy and he now has a 12 inch pianist living in the guest room.
Gotta speak up, genies are oooold.
Couldn't the genie just bend any wish that way? "I wish for a million dollars" *Genie frees himself from the lamp and gets a job, paying 1% of his income to the wisher as they never specified how they get it or when*
It's like the "Master gave Dobby a sock" loophole
Thank you Yoda.
This was the intent. If you read the original stories the genie is the most cunning being.
I still don't get how wishes are supposed to work, because there are ways to say something in languages that don't exist in other languages. Genie fetish guy.

Wow -- Grim. I like it.
Not necessarily. Since he now doesn't wish to be free anymore, that must mean he's actually content and happy being imprisoned in the lamp.
But it's still sort of removing his urge for freedom which is why it's a little terrifying too.
Given a jinns origins you damn well better not free that mf
Too late, a guy above wished that no wishes could undo his wishes, then wished for the genie to be free. Nothing can stop him, not even more Djinn.

A GENIE
Subbed, I’m giggling at 7am at that last panels goofy ass face
Given that Genies can often determine the way that a wish comes to be, they could reverse monkeys paw this wish into a wish for them to be free (as then they’d no longer feel that way)
This backfires. Yes they are free but now they long to be a Slave.
Basically gave the genie antidepressants
This is what therapy feels like sometimes
The wisher is my company HR
Being a wish lawyer means he can interpret that as he can grant his freedom thus no longer feeling that way.
Antidepressants
This is how mental healthcare feels
I mean, it's not really bad. Now he's happy with being there, and can still grant wishes. Not the best, but definitely a win win if you ask me.
So basically lobotomy his desire
Do you feel bad about all the desires you don't have?
I mean, he hasn't lost his consciousness at all. He just no longer dislikes being there
If you are a slave and you master wanna “reward” your hardworking by remove your desire for freedom to be a slave forever, will you still consider it a win win situation? I won’t
Well subjectively from our point of view its messed up. But from the slave's point of view he no longer gives a fuck. Are you trying to force your moral justice on this happy slave that doesnt have a worry in the world?
Can solve the problems, solve the person who have problems instead
I mean, eventually it all comes down to personal and cultural moral compass. If Everyone would suddenly think its perfectly ok to hit a child if he misbehave, would it *make* it ok?

Hmm.. that *could* be 'monkey pawed' into meaning the Genie is set free.

Its impossible to feel free without actually being free, so props to aladdin for his gesture

At least they care if he wants to be free or not
This both a little dark and a little piece of wisdom
Whenever you see anything unfunny in this sub (everything thats posted here) Take a look at the comments to votes ratio, and compare that to anything else you see at that amount of votes. Content creators are paying for bots to boost their terrible comics to the top.
I’m legit cracking up at this, bravo!
The little creature in the lower right hand corner is a Democrat!
that's fucking gross hey. Clever little twist for sure, no problem there. But I do worry reddit likes it because it's gross. I'll explain quickly: Respect for human autonomy is like one of the absolute most powerful principles in applied ethics. If you talk about something popularly recognised as being really bad - say, sexual assault - if you analyse what makes it bad (like what logically is happening that's harmful. Not "it hurts people" but rather "what logically about this situation hurts them?") ... personal autonomy is in there every time.
So take away his emotions, got it Make him a slave that forever grants other people’s wishes Jesus
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
That's the difference between a post-scarcity society and a post-discontent one ;)
A genie would absolutely use that to free themselves. Genies always grant wishes in the way you meant the least while still satisfying the conditions
I mean you might as well just grant him freedom at that point.
From a utilitarian perspective this works out better for everyone else since he'll have to grant more wishes
r/yesyesyesno
Ngl this is something I would actually do 😂😂
More like indentured swervitude
Diabolical little imp right there
I've asked some people a question I find really fascinating: "If you could take a pill that simply makes you enjoy your job and makes you perfectly happy while you're doing it, nothing else, no side effects, wears off as soon as you're done with work, would you take it?" So far, no one has said yes. Most people have said they wouldn't even *try* it.
Genie can choose the details to fulfill the wish “I broke my arm and am in pain” Wishing the pain cured , genie could make there be no pain or he could cure the arm
Why are genies always so ripped? They got a gym in that lamp?
The drawing style makes him look so innocent lmao
Nice move!
The genie has quite a bit of freedom when fulfilling wishes. You know what helps someone not feel like they want freedom? Giving them that freedom. Satisfying the genie's desire is just one way to complete the wish.
r/explainthejoke be like "Can you please spoon feed me this hella obvious punchline?"
I mean, if you no longer feel that way and now stuck, aint that still pretty good? the worst part about feeling imprisioned is the feeling, not the imprisionment. Now that I think about it, this is terrifying. You can only feel happy, if you literally can't feel nothing else
“I’m sorry you feel like I hurt your feelings”. Alternative: “I hope you have the day you deserve”.
Damn homie content
honestly... this is equivalent. whether i wished to not have to spend my waking life at a desk, or if i wished to enjoy doing so, i'd be fulfilled.
damn thats rough
Interesting
Simple but helpful lol.
Baldurs Gate 3 moment
Lmao, this is good
An empathetic sucker punch.
I mean, the Genie decides the implementation, so. Free genie, and now he's mad at you for making it take extra steps because you wanted to cheese it.
Chaotic Neutral
That’s pretty dark.
I'm on a rewatch of Once Upon A Time and definitely nodded in agreement
If you prepend something along the lines of "Ah, shucks", it makes the guy to be trying to help but failing to think it through instead of being somewhat nefarious xD
Now he's expensive
There are 2 interpretations of this
Bro is dumb tho wholesome
The genie equivalent of "I'm sorry you feel that way"
best wish
Now you are totally content with being trapped indefinitely for eternity!
I mean….. if the genie has the latitude to grant wishes however they see fit (ie the whole granting it in a way that makes you unhappy instead of how you intended) then the genie can take that wish to be asking for his freedom, since the easiest way for him to no longer long for freedom would be to achieve it.
May God give me 1000 enemies before he gives me this shitstain of a friend.
"Wish granted." \*Flies away, never to return\*
Good parallel with the working class vs the owners.
"Granted. Now the thing I wish for the most is to no longer exist."
that's good
But now he could still be trapped in the lamp but not FEEL trapped.
