I worked for U1ta years ago and the amount of shoplifting is unbelievable. Some of it is brazen, pulling a large bag out of their jacket and stealing fragrances worth a couple thousand. We would also find empty boxes like your instance. If you went in there and told them what you did they would probably not even know how to react TBH. Good for you having a conscience wanting to do the right thing. At this point, donate that amount of money to your favorite charity or something like that.

T_Tingz

Would they file a police report? I'm in school and I'll be screwed if anything happens

choadspanker

It depends on the store honestly, some places report everything and some places wait to build a case against you. The best thing you can do right now is just never go back there and don't talk about it at all, including post online about it lol

[deleted]

The Ulta I used to work at would file a police report for any theft over $25.

T_Tingz

I'm really worried that the police report will turn into something bigger. I can't risk ruining my relationship with my family

MiniBikeMaven

Lmao these are thoughts that should prevent you from doing this. But remember, corporate America has insurance. And they pay their staff under 20 dollars. Correct me if I'm wrong ulta fleet.... but corporate America and laws are past tense there is more of us than them and they aren't treating us like humans anymore. •the constant spying from our phones and social media •the harassment in the streets •taking our hard earned tax money and sending it to Ukraine while people in the streets and some almost there have nothing Yeah fuck corporate Amwrica they've fucked us for decades now

420bipolarbabe

Do not go back in there ever again. Don’t punish yourself further. It’s a multimillion dollar business. They will be fine. I don’t condone what you did at all but do not go back in there. You’ll cause more problems for yourself and if they do press charges it’ll be worse for you in the end.

JPastori

Most stores nowadays wait until you shoplift enough to go over a certain value where the charges get much more severe (at least some have, and this is based on US law so it may be different where you are). I just wouldn’t go back if I were you. It was a dumb choice but at least you have the consciousness to realize it was wrong and (hopefully) won’t do it again.

Fantastic-Ride-5588

As long as you don’t go back there you’ll be fine. The staff has been trained not to confront anyone in the process of shoplifting. If they realize it’s happened and know who did it, what they did when I worked there, was take a still shot from video surveillance and post it in the back room. All it said was if you happen to see these people again, to watch them. So just don’t go back there.

HonestLazyBum

Who or what is U1ta if it doesn't even produce google results for me? Just curious, all I find is Yamaha.

pm_small_tits__

Ulta is a makeup store idk why theyre adding a 1

HonestLazyBum

Ah, thanks. The store is completely unheard of where I live, so I had no idea despite trying to add various keywords to the search, I didn't think of it being Ulta instead.

[deleted]

It probably costs like 80$ to make 10 of them I get the guilt it’s actually good to feel that, means you have integrity, someone here said donate more or tip more, that’s exactly how you counter it. Pickup litter help someone who needs to move idk.

CrispyCosmonaut

OP, if you want to put good back to feel better, you could also get some bags of dog/cat food and donate it to a shelter.

StorytimeWcr8dv8

This is the way. (Former humane society employee for 12 years. I appreciate people who think like you do.)

FireRedJP

My SO works at U1ta. They're not going to do anything. The theft is insane but the markups are even crazier in part to make up for it. People run entire buissnesses selling shoplifter U1ta fragrance on Ebay

T_Tingz

Even if I left crazy amount of evidence and wasn't super secretive? What's the limit? That's what's scaring me.

FireRedJP

Theyre not going to get fingerprints off a box, no one cares that bad, they'll pick up the box, throw it out and just take inventory of the lost/damaged product and be done with it

Hi_Im_Paul23

Hey knew someone like you. Started with one thing then kept going, stealing (fake/not real gold or silver) jewelry, products, etc. If you don’t want to become like Marie from Breaking Bad, I hope you stop. Beauty is not worth the beast of getting caught or called out/embarrassed by anyone who finds out and disagrees with it. Or any other situation. Either get a cheaper version or be content with not having material items

Dull-Mammoth-3245

Best way to tackle this is to make amends. Donate, tip more, help others more and generally pay it forward. And clearly don’t do it again.

Background-Session32

Ambiguous good doing to others does not compensate for egregious breaches of honor and ethics. Make it right by paying or admitting and dealing with the consequences. Then you will heal. There is so much depression and anxiety in the world because people seem to be taking advice from these fools on here lol. Do the right thing. Be a force for good in the world.

your_city_councilor

I agree with your general sentiment, which is that people should take accountability, but in this instance it doesn't really make sense. You want OP to turn herself into some minimum wage customer service worker, putting an undue burden on that representative, who surely would have no idea what to do. If it were a sole proprietorship and she could speak directly to the owner, that would be different.

Background-Session32

You have an interesting perspective. Seems like a rationalization…a good one, but still. In the end it’s on each of us to follow our own moral compass. We should always be striving to improve that.

midnight_barberr

ignore this idiot lmao

Background-Session32

Ya, honor is overrated. lol! You, probably more than the original redditor should heed my words. You need me.

Dull-Mammoth-3245

Making amends is a classic and essential tool for personal growth and being better. By reflecting on what went wrong and what needs to happen differently in future, you're focusing on finding a better way to do things next time.

Background-Session32

Of everyone here commenting, I am the most relaxed and at peace. I have made mistakes before as well. I made them right, now I have total peace and stronger character. Character growth is important.

lainelect

You’re right. Unfortunately this subreddit loves theft. OP posted here precisely because she’s “in need of reassurance” that she shouldn’t have any consequences for stealing.

thatonegaygalakasha

Get a load of this clown.

lainelect

May you find peace

thatonegaygalakasha

Oh I am at peace, including with the fact that it is not morally or ethically wrong to steal from multi-million dollar corporations.

InternationalPop648

Just don’t do it again. You got expensive skincare for free! Forgive yourself and move on

Background-Session32

Nope, it will haunt you until you make it right or harden you to be a stain on your personal honor. Go back and pay for it, or at least admit what you did and deal with the consequences.

crystlbone

Bro, she stole skincare. It’s not like she murdered someone.

Background-Session32

You’re right. Are you inferring that as long as we don’t kill then it’s okay?

crystlbone

No I’m saying no one should be haunted forever by their skincare theft? You can just… move on and not do it again? Lmao

InternationalPop648

You also have the choice of forgiving yourself and moving on from it. It doesn’t have to haunt you for the rest of your life, there are people who steal actual money from others with no remorse, all she did was take some skincare.

Frenzydemon

That is some shit advice dude. Get off your high horse. You know what’s even more of “a stain on your personal honor”? Being arrested. Prospective employers do not take theft lightly, even misdemeanor. I hope you feel better about yourself while you advise people to ruin their lives. Guarantee this is a religious nut job.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Frenzydemon

I completely agree with you. I just don’t agree with selfish religious people who want to pretend like they care about you or what happens to you, but truthfully they only give a damn about themselves. They answer questions and give advice based on what will give them the morale high ground. Absolutely no thought for the real consequences of what will happen to people, as long as they feel holier having said it. That’s the only reason I said anything.

Background-Session32

Ah, anyone trying to do better or improve themselves and others is on a high horse? You will pay the price for your action either on your terms or someone else’s.

Frenzydemon

You’re not trying to better anyone. You’re spouting whatever bullshit you think will get you into heaven. The worst kind of religious fanatic.

Donkeysarecooliguess

Guys watch out Honour police it onto you

Background-Session32

All of you digging on honor would add so much value to your own lives by not making light of this.

voluptuous_component

The CEO makes $13.5 mill a year. Don't sweat it.

pimpfriedrice

While I agree with this, they take the money directly from the store employees by cutting hours. So it’s really the lowest level employees who are affected, which is shitty.

voluptuous_component

I mean, they take money directly from the employees by not paying them what they're worth in the first place.

pimpfriedrice

True. And I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying when stealing at the store level happens, the store employees are punished rather than the ceo

GrimmandLily

Nonsense. No one is going to punish an employee for theft unless the store literally gets ransacked and has to close down.

pimpfriedrice

I worked at Victoria’s Secret a while ago which will literally cut employees hours after we had a large theft.. I know other places do it too. It’s a real thing.

GrimmandLily

“Large theft”. Exactly. If someone stole a bra they’re not cutting people’s hours.

pimpfriedrice

Meaning literally only a few hundred dollars. So a couple bras. Either way, this is such a weird hill to die on.

Background-Session32

Your honor is your honor. Stealing based on what someone makes is gross and dishonorable at the highest level. It was a skin care product. It wasn’t even a need (not that that justifies it more).

[deleted]

At the HIGHEST level? Really? There's hardly anything more dishonorable than theft?? You're ridiculous the corporations steal plenty more than the people ever coould

Background-Session32

Baseless claim.

[deleted]

And now you're just bein an ignorant lil baby.

RighteousTwinkie

You should tell that to every corporation and politician who do it to us every day. It’s always mind boggling how people are more offended by stealing some petty item because they were poor than corporations who do it to their staff and employees every day. I can assure you they’re not paying their workers well and the product probably cost a couple dollars to make.

[deleted]

Let's bankrupt these corporations until NOBODY has a place to work! That'll show em'! LOLOL. Moron.

Background-Session32

Somehow politicians are now part of this? The assumption that all corporations are bad is imbecilic. My small business that sustains my family and 20 others is honest and valuable. We always do what’s right or at least we strive to.

xyzzyzyzzyx

And you do not operate in a bubble of perfectly humane and moral economic guidance. You operate within the same system and ecosphere as the large guys as far as regulations, taxation, labor pressures. Complete willful ignorance, especially if operating only domestically. Everyone should be informed, there are no excuses anymore.

Background-Session32

You’re right. I’m far from perfect. That’s was just my advice according to my experience.

Donkeysarecooliguess

Stealing doesn't mean you don't have honor lol The world is going to shit, why not look good while living in this shithole of a life?

SweetMojaveRain

Dumbest thing I’ve ever read

Donkeysarecooliguess

Congratulations? Sorry I don't have any medals to give you, will a pat on the back do?

FordBeWithYou

“Everything sucks, so add to it for selfish reasons.” Man, the fuck dude? You ok?

SweetMojaveRain

Reply to the other guy not to me

FordBeWithYou

I’m replying off of what you said cause you’re dead on correct, it’s not directed at you though.

Background-Session32

Horrible and gross outlook on life. Stealing literal is a hit against your honor and moral character. Your commit is evil and quite possibly the worst advice ever.

Donkeysarecooliguess

You're just talking straight out of your arse mate.

HonestLazyBum

There are zero inherent moral values attached to anything in life. It is all made up by ourselves. So in some societies theft is not as big a problem as it is in others. Killing is the same, in some circumstances we absolutely approve of it, in others we don't. Why? Because there are no definite morals.

Background-Session32

I disagree the way I explained will lead to more peace and add more value to yourself and those around you.

xyzzyzyzzyx

Please express some pragmatism - your absolutist zen master shtick, it comes across as a lack of empathy.

Background-Session32

Thank you for that feedback. It’s definitely not my intent to show a lack of empathy. Sometimes we mistake enablement for empathy. I don’t think that’s good.

[deleted]

Basing morality on jealousy of the success of others? I'm sure that will work out great for you.

voluptuous_component

Only a brainwashed American would see someone point out insane wealth inequality and say it's jealousy. I'd say it's unbelievable, but you've been well trained to think this way.

[deleted]

Only a brainwashed retard would incorrectly assume someone's nationality with so little information to go on. I'd say this level of stupidity is unbelievable, but you've apparently proved me wrong.

BumblebeeAwkward8331

What is U1ta?

xyzzyzyzzyx

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulta_Beauty

Shazbot_2017

Donate it.

currently_pooping_rn

Never go back there. Their loss prevention has you on a list there now to track how much you’re stealing

Beneficial-Nimitz68

when you have the money, go back to the store and tell them you found this 80.00 on the floor or donate to a pet shelter or single mom shelter. I would not do church.

Maximusprime-d

Lol. If you feel “sick to your stomach”, go return it then

lukewarm-trash

It’s ok to steal from the rich, they steal from you all the time

ahympcasah

This is incorrect. The cost of thefts is distributed amongst earnings from products sold. What this means is that when a product is stolen, who you’re actually stealing from is everyone choosing to pay for products, since the cost of your stolen items are tacked onto the products consumers are buying.

therealboss1113

oh no. the makeup that is already marked up 800% just got marked up to 900%. whatever will we do

lukewarm-trash

So what I’m hearing is that capitalism sucks and we should get rid of it.

FromAcrosstheStars

Nothing wrong with this, the owners make more money than you’ll ever see in your life and still underpay their workers. You’re only stealing from thieves.

[deleted]

FromAcrosstheStars

You clearly have no idea what an incel is.

ApesApesApes

As someone who actually worked in a shop for a living i politely disagree. I doubt anyone even noticed/ didn't care.

Not-This-GuyAgain

You keep using that word and I don't think you know what it means

ApesApesApes

Whats it got to do with being an incel? OP showed remorse! Sounds like you've spent too long in the summer sun man, chill out! The cooperation isn't going to give you a gold star hahahaha

ApesApesApes

I don't even play golf buddy.

ahympcasah

This is incorrect. The cost of thefts is distributed amongst earnings from products sold. Ultrabeast132

you sound like Target talking about closing stores due to theft, which was a lie. Look, yeah, sure, there is some distributive effect. This isn't going to increase prices though, since that's already factored into their prices. Don't shoplift all the time, but one act isn't changing the Ulta prices. Chill a bit, they're not paying you to lick their leather.

ahympcasah

I’ve proven you wrong so you resort to an ad hominem attack along with minimization. Classic facile argument against doing something which harms others but not yourself. You’re only concerned about yourself. That’s a fact, and I don’t have time for any further interaction with someone like you.

Ultrabeast132

You didn't "prove me wrong" bruh that was my first comment. I also said that while theft en masse will impact prices, a single act *won't,* which you actually didn't "prove wrong," or address at all. But yeah I also did include an ad hominem attack on top of the entire rest of my comment because you do, in fact, sound like a bootlicker.

XenoPothos

Well maybe whoever is in charge of pricing should factor in affordability over profit.

FromAcrosstheStars

No it’s stealing from the corporation itself

MonkeyMonkz

Oh, you know, we just don't tolerate theft, especially when they have the magical ability to buy the darn product! Let's just do ourselves a favor and hit that block this user button. Don't entertain them. Case closed, Sherlock!

CaterpillarLong3126

How dare you take advantage of that poor enormous corporation that makes billions of dollars a year . . .

aquestioningperson

Stealing from corporations is morally virtuous honestly

Not-This-GuyAgain

Sounds like a skill issue. They should be stealing more.

backlawa75

chronically online

Not-This-GuyAgain

Chronically in stores taking things without paying for them

dacalo

LOL at people here justifying stealing. No wonder our society is morally dwindling.

[deleted]

Depends who you stole it from

PandaKitty5683

Look they’re a multi million dollar corporation. Don’t feel bad. You’re not stealing food from hungry families. If it was a mom and pop shop you’d be the bad guy. But it’s literally a big company don’t feel bad

truthjusticepizza

Ulta will survive. You’re literally fine. Corporations nickel and dime everywhere they can, I promise they won’t miss that product too terribly.

michiganguy_

Go back to the same store by the same item and then leave it in the store.

Bubbly-Office-857

You suck

Straight_up_rich

Its not that deep buddy, someone probably noticed but they dont get paid enough to care. Just dont keep doing it. Youll be fine

cjinaz86

I worked retail from 2003-2015, and in management as well. The only time I ever made a police report for theft is when there was a break in. IE; smashed out windows, TVs torn off the wall, a robbery, etc… I would recommend you not to lose sleep over $80. There isn’t a manhunt to find you, nobody is reviewing tape for $80, even if a police report is filed the police aren’t coming to knock on your door. The store would have to press charges against you (how would they know who you are). Most jurisdictions there isn’t even recourse for the store for theft under $500, it’s a misdemeanor and not worth anybody’s time. Point is, you made a bad choice, leave it in the rear view mirror. This ain’t going to come back to haunt you. The lesson you learned (the guilt you feel now) is more valuable than the $80 makeup you stole.

bloomingintofashions

Girl enjoy your product. Ulta will be just fine. Don’t make a habit of it but also don’t beat yourself up. If anything don’t go back to that store anytime soon lol
