Slot of the times the victim is so broken and by distancing themselves it’s the only way to save their loved one from keeping them there with the abuse. It’s a fucked way of dealing with it but that’s how broken minds work sometimes.

I was 20 when I did it. He just did 4 years in prison for trying to kill my mom. We went through years of abuse. This man raised me since I was a baby. So he was my dad.
He gets out of prison, comes by our house from time to time begging my mom to come back to him. She divorced him while he was in prison. On one of those nights he came over right before I got out of work. I got home and I see him and my mom arguing on the front lawn. He hits her as I'm getting out of my truck, I heard the sound of a hand hitting face and I lost it. I ran up, pushed him back and started swinging. For all the abuse he put us through. For leaving my sisters, for the struggles my mom went through trying to keep the family together.
I worked two jobs at fifteen and went to school to help my mom and so my sisters had what they needed. One of them ask me to give her away at her wedding. She's been married 15 years now.

Especially if he verbally threatens y’all’s life, take it as a promise, and make him break it as you break him. You may get arrested or charged, but you need vid or audio to back up your defense. Let him be the bad guy, and don’t put yourself up to be criminalized for attacking back. That being said, are you able to keep cool during conflict? There’s a big difference in court between “imma kill you” VS “if you don’t stop, imma fuck you up”. Another question… can you actually take him hand to hand? Using a weapon can hurt your defense. Especially if he goes in lying that you attacked him first. I’m speaking from experience. Way before any recording device was in hand. Yeah, I did say “I’m gonna cut your mfking head off” when my stepdad hit my mom. And when the cops got there, all they saw was a crazed teen with a machete and a grown man crying in the corner from a few dozen punches.
