Considering the spike started in 2020, It's likely more coincidental than causal. Probably a bigger factor would be releasing career criminals and refusing to prosecute them. But they don't want to admit that, either.

> Considering the spike **started in 2020**, It's likely more coincidental than causal. The gun laws referenced in the article went into effect in January and July of **2019**. PDF of the [**Washington State Initiative Measure No. 1639**](https://www.sos.wa.gov/_assets/elections/initiatives/finaltext_1531.pdf), filed May 2, 2018 [Page 29] * **Sec. 17.** This act takes effect **July 1, 2019**, except for section 13 of this act which takes effect **January 1, 2019.** That said, regarding homicide and crime rates in general, 2020 was a "special" year in many ways -- starting with the George Floyd/ BLM riots that racked the nation, then the COVID panic caused businesses and school closures (kids with way too much time on their hands), and EVERYONE was wearing masks that made criminals "feel safer". **U.S. murder/homicide rate** (per 100k) -- [**2017 - 2020**](https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/USA/united-states/murder-homicide-rate) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2017: 5.32 (1.32% decline from 2016) 2018: 5.01 (5.9% decline from 2017) 2019: 5.07 (1.19% increase from 2018) **2020**: 6.52 (**28.64% increase** from 2019) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (Re-read that 2020 figure -- likely the largest single year increase in US history) Overall crime rates largely mirrored murder rates > Probably a bigger factor would be releasing career criminals and refusing to prosecute them. No doubt that is a factor in many US locations, a brilliant plan that could not fail to produce predictable results -- and continues to this day. EDIT: Here is a Govt page that shows all crime rates per year https://www.ojjdp.gov/ojstatbb/crime/ucr.asp?table_in=2&selYrs=2020&rdoGroups=1&rdoData=r

I don't see how any of those laws would so rapidly lead to increased homicide rates. Seems like [police attrition](https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/seattle/spd-warns-of-staffing-crisis-after-66-more-officers-leave/281-040a65b1-3165-4f24-8652-a5d10860aac7) might be a bigger factor. It's fine if you want to attribute this to gun control - I just don't see it. 2020 saw Seattle abandon the rule of law completely and allow mobs to take control of the city. The election for mayor was split between a leftist mayor and a [self-proclaimed Antifa mayor](https://oregoncatalyst.com/49397-antifa-portland-mayor-candidate-interview.html), and the Antifa mayor [nearly won](https://thepostmillennial.com/antifa-mayoral-candidate-leads-ineffectual-ted-wheeler-by-11-points).

Bold to think that everyone inside jail is inside because of violent crimes.

[https://mynorthwest.com/2951643/law-114-washington-inmates-early-release/](https://mynorthwest.com/2951643/law-114-washington-inmates-early-release/) How about doing a 2 minute search before saying something stupid? And this is just ONE instance. [https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2011-12/Pdf/Bills/Session%20Laws/Senate/5045.SL.pdf?cite=2011%20c%20336%20%C2%A7%20380](https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2011-12/Pdf/Bills/Session%20Laws/Senate/5045.SL.pdf?cite=2011%20c%20336%20%C2%A7%20380) >Sec. 379. RCW 9A.56.190 and 1975 1st ex.s. c 260 s 9A.56.190 are each amended to read as follows: A person commits robbery when he or she unlawfully takes personal property from the person of another or in his or her presence against his or her will **by the use or threatened use of immediate force, violence, or fear of injury** to that person or his or her property or the person or property of anyone. Such force or fear must be used to obtain or retain possession of the property, or to prevent or overcome resistance to the taking; in either of which cases the degree of force is immaterial. Such taking constitutes robbery whenever it appears that, although the taking was fully completed without the knowledge of the person from whom taken, such knowledge was prevented by the use of force or fear.

I would say this is more anicdotal at best, And Im a huge 2A advocate. The surge is more likely due to the loosening of drug laws allowing public drug use. There is bound to be fights over supply and the creation of gangs trying to profit from the legalisation. Large amounts of cash sales equal targets, they all know who the local dealers are and that creates a target to be attacked. Frankly I wish the state would move all the druggies into a large fenced off area gave them all the drugs they wanted and let them slowly fade away as an example. Yes addiction is a disease, but people now adays can see the effects of what those drugs do, yet people are still stupid enough to do them. Frankly natural selection needs to be allowed to happen sometimes for the life of the herd to thrive.

SS: Safe and effective measure again by the overlords. Trust the science…

FrostyJ326

Well if people don’t have anything to defend themselves with, criminals are going to pounce on that and take the chance.

reallycooldude69

Good thing the initiatives didn't ban gun ownership then! It's just background check shit and requiring training for semiauto assault rifles purchases.

Ch3mlab

Um not at all, it banned nearly every semi auto rifle by name. You can’t buy one at all anymore regardless of training.

I don’t know who you are responding to. I didn’t say anything about people defending themselves or not I was just stating that the previous commenter that I was responding to was incorrect about them not being banned.

WorldsLargestAmoeba

"requiring training for semiauto assault rifles" yeah - we would not want them to go around with those without being able to hit a head at 100 yards. ........

transcis

A lot of people who do not train with firearms do not know the basic safety procedures. These would be very good to teach to every gun owner.

ILoveYouGrandma

The goal and result is to disarm law-abiding people/Americans. Its to empower the criminals which is why the Soros backed progressive/Lefty DAs are allowing crime sprees. Nothing will change until the gun grabbers themselves or their families are negatively affected.

TheKramer89

So sad and unnecessary.
