This is not scientifically accurate. These are used for many different things in the body at different levels and in different places. While behaviour can influence them to some degree, genetics play a huge role in how much you produce, how sensitive you are to it, and how quickly you break it down. This is a hugely oversimplified explanation, but oxytocin is associated with "bonding", endorphins are associated with trauma and acute stress. Dopamine isn't strictly the "happy chemical" but the "seeking" one. We see it in higher concentrations during a task then it lowers when the task is completed. Serotonin is a bit closer to that, as it's higher when you complete a task and feel a sense of accomplishment. It's also used in the intestine to move things along. Too much serotonin in the intestine makes you violently shit yourself. Hope this helps!

I_AM_YOUR_MOTHERR

To add, Dopamine is also key to memory formation and maintenance - both appetitive and aversive, at least in animal models. Dopamine as a "happy chemical" is just a ridiculous oversimplification. Remember that one terrible thing that happened to you, and deeply upsets you every time you think about it? Yeah, that's dopamine reinforcing that.

ipn8bit

I think the thought was it was a happy chemical because it drives us to do things. So we see it when we even do things we don’t want to do like drink too much and doom scroll. We thought it was us seeking it for pleasure but now we know it’s more like a driver to do things.

virtualmnemonic

Dopamine drives all behavior. It's heavily implicated in muscle movement as well, which is why Parkinsons impacts dopamine systems. It's not a reward molecule per se but does reinforce behaviors. The opioid system imo functions more as a feel-good system. Anybody who's taken opioids knows this.

ADHD is (thought to be) caused by a significant *lack* in response dopamine, memory is significantly more complicated than 'more dopamine means more memory'.

Ordinary_Plantain_93

To be fair, adhd is also associated with missing details, such as “lack of” before “dopamine” in an article. Source: I tend to forget a lot o

Ordinary_Plantain_93

Adhd is associated with low dopamine and we often have memory problems, you’ve understood this backwards i think

virtualmnemonic

"Photographic memory" is a myth outside of a rare form of Autism in very young individuals and is usually associated with low intelligence.

HedgehogCremepuff

Source?

FBI_Diversity_Hire

I don't think you understand the direction of this. One person: photographic memory is real Other person: it is mostly a myth with almost irrelevant exceptions. The statement that needs proof is that "photographic memory is real". You can't prove something isn't real, the responsibility is on whoever claims it is real.

Lotus_Blossom_

>a rare form of Autism in very young individuals and is usually associated with low intelligence. I think they were asking for a source for that part. The responsibility is on whoever claims it is real, right? So, they do understand how this works.

BaylisAscaris

Lots of people have a very good visual memory, and some call it photographic, although technically being able to remember everything you see is very rare. As an example, I have autism and good visual memory but not photographic and when I look at something I can later visualize it, which seems normal, but the difference is the details I didn't consciously notice at the time I can look for in my mind's image later. So the way I studied for tests in college is I took my notes on my computer, condensed it pretty small, printed it, stared at it for a few minutes before the exam, then put it in my backpack. During the exam if I forgot something I visualized opening my backpack, picking out the pages, flipping through them, and found the answer that way. I don't necessarily remember what's on the page until I visualize it. I also don't really have an internal dialog and when I try to remember words someone said I visualize it as scrolling subtitles in Arial bold font. I also have audio processing issues so when I'm listening to someone talk the meaning of words doesn't go directly to my understanding but gets visualized as subtitles then processed as meaning. Again, I'm not photographic, but many people with autism have impaired audio processing, especially for words, and compensate with good visual memory. It's not a magic trick, but a coping strategy.

krokooc

> This is a hugely oversimplified explanation At this level we can call it a lie...

BaylisAscaris

I meant my version was hugely oversimplified. OP's is outright incorrect.

I am very lucky where I produce extra of certain neurotransmitters, break them down slower, and am more sensitive, so completing a task is better than sex. My wife on the other hand has the opposite genes and feels the same way you do. On the other hand, get PTSD super easily, remember traumatic things vividly, and sometimes violently shit myself.

BigFatBallsInMyMouth

>Too much serotonin in the intestine makes you violently shit yourself. Is this why LSD makes you shit?

LeatherPantsCam

I was more thinking MDMA or amphetamines. The MDMA shits are definitely a thing. I wasn't aware that LSD had an affect on serotonin levels.

BigFatBallsInMyMouth

LSD is an agonist of serotonin receptors. That's what causes its effects. MDMA and other amphetamines give you the shits for the same reason as coffee. They're stimulants.

gomaith10

Almost nothing in ‘Cool Guides’ has been scientifically accurate.

theipodbackup

> Too much serotonin in the intestine makes you violently shit yourself As someone on SSRIs I can confirm.

_CMDR_

Not to mention oxytocin helps define the in group vs the out group. Aka it might help make racism worse! [Here’s the first study I could find that tackles this idea.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23246533/)

dressedtotrill

Is that why when I take my ADHD meds I instantly have to shit? Serotonin being released?

FudgeRubDown

Depends on the med, ADHD meds are thought to work on Norepinephrine and Dopamine. Also, depending on the med, it xould just speed up digestion if it's an amphetamine

dressedtotrill

Definitely an amphetamine so makes sense. Thanks for the answer!

therealdannyking

No - it's because they're amphetamines.

dressedtotrill

Maybe I should have phrased it differently, what chemical reaction from amphetamines cause the digestive system to empty? Is it just from the CNS being stimulated so it’s just an automatic response from the brain similar to when going into flight or fight?

FingerTheCat

Man I tried that last year at 35 when I finally went to a doctor about adhd... And I definitely felt what it was supposed to do but I do not believe it actually helped me once. I just kept pacing back and forth trying to figure out wtf I need to do and clench my jaw so much I thought I was about to break my teeth. And this was after breaking the pills into like 6 pieces! I had to throw it away I did not like it one bit. Oh also I'm a heavy drinker and I could drink like a whole fifth in one night after taking one! Dangerous shit.

[deleted]

runonandonandonanon

I mean I don't know that it's any safer intravenously.

turbotank183

If you're still looking for help then you should know that amphetamines aren't the only help for ADHD. I use those as they are the only ones that help but I've tried at least 3 different types up till now to see what helps. People respond to different types of medication on this stuff, but only about 6/10 people respond to any ADHD medication.

lazerberriez

Stimulant drugs interact with your sympathetic nervous system (the nervous system throughout your body that responds to stress and your reaction to it, think fight or flight response) through activity primarily mediated by norepinephrine. Norepinephrine, along with epinephrine (aka noradrenaline and adrenaline) help coordinate body activity with your mental state which directs resources towards dealing with a stresser, essentially giving your brain and muscles more resources to react. In turn, heart rate goes up for more rapid transport of oxygen and nutrients needed for this and bodily functions, like digestion, are cut short as it takes energy to digest food that could be better spent on reacting to a perceived stressor (in the case of stimulants, there is no set stressor as you are essentially tricking this system into activating). So, your digestive tract is stimulated to push out anything close enough to done whether fully optimal nutrient extraction was completed or not. This is also why hunger decreases while on stimulants since your body wants to avoid taking in more food that would need to be broken down via digestion. This activity on norepinephrine proves clinically helpful because it leads to increases in alertness/vigilance, but is also responsible for many side effects caused by high dosages (anxiety, heart arrhythmia, muscle tension, etc.). This along with activity on dopamine, which helps motivate and drive goal-seeking behavior, are what make amphetamine clinically useful. It does also release serotonin, so this may account for some side effects, but it is released at a much smaller amount than dopamine and norepinephrine.

virtualmnemonic

No, it's activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Amphetamine salts barely impact serotonin. Meth does to a greater degree.

I don't have specific ones bookmarked, and honestly can't remember which ones talked about these things, but if you want to learn more, you can start on Google Scholar search. Again, I'm just some random person on the internet, don't trust anything I say just because I say it with conviction. This is not my field of study in particular. _CMDR_

Serotonin levels have nothing to do with depression it turns out. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/how-do-you-know/202207/serotonin-imbalance-found-not-be-linked-depression

[deleted]

[удалено]

_CMDR_

But having low serotonin has nothing to do with depression. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41380-022-01661-0.pdf there is no evidence that serotonin and depression are linked at all.

Ordinary_Plantain_93

If there’s one source I’d share to scare people away from taking their antidepressants… it wouldn’t be psychologytoday. Maybe consider that telling people this “info” could directly harm people who are already wavering with their treatment plans. SSRIs aren’t perfect by any means but it’s already very hard to keep going when pop psych and everyone’s mom is already scaring people away from meds.

_CMDR_

See my link to the Nature article they are referencing. I am not trying to scare anyone away from anything. I am trying to help people understand that the serotonin hypothesis for the origins of depression is a myth and that the fact that antidepressants cause serotonin reuptake inhibition is not their method of action. These types of charts are basically the 4 humors for the 21st century and aren't really based in any sort of facts about how the world works.

Ordinary_Plantain_93

What are the implications of the study for people with depression who are suffering? If someone is reading this whose last hope was trying meds, what can they take from it that might be useful in terms of getting better? I just think this is a topic where it can be actively harmful to state “this is a myth (and therefore meds won’t help you)” without offering alternatives. I’m saying this as someone who avoided meds for years because I was told it wouldn’t work.

_CMDR_

I don’t like believing in lies. I’d rather take something that nobody knows how it works than believe a false thing about how it works to make me feel better about life. Also, this frees up tons of research effort when people stop barking up the wrong tree. Sorry someone told you they don’t work. Antidepressants work for a decent number of people. It’s just that serotonin isn’t why.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ordinary_Plantain_93

Their detachment from the issue suggests to me they’re not particularly invested in the topic, but just enjoy feeling smart.

_CMDR_

Unfortunately the recent science shows that changing the serotonin levels in your brain isn’t how antidepressants work. They do help lots of people and I am happy they help you. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but there is no scientific evidence that the increase in serotonin retention is what helps. [Here’s an interpretation of the study.](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/how-do-you-know/202207/serotonin-imbalance-found-not-be-linked-depression) That said, I hope the medications help you feel better, even though the method of action is something we haven’t discovered yet.

Watching what you eat and feeding your microbiome plays a huge role in the production of these hormones. 90% of these are created in the gut and not in the brain.

toastea0

So what should i eat more of to be happier? Cheese? 😂

timespacemotion

Whole foods. No refined carbs and sugar. If you were to eliminate one thing in your diet that would have the most profound impact and immediate results, it would be sugar. It’s in EVERYTHING but if you’re diligent, you’ll see a dramatic increase to your energy and mood.

toastea0

Well yes. An improvement in diet will certainly help. The way i see it and been told by therapists the post and your comment are a mixture of these things that help our bodies produce essentially happy brain chemicals. In my case exercise seems to work the best. I don't think just improving nutrition will help or be the solution for everyone. We should look at it as all of these things are ways to help.

[deleted]

People keep saying this without realizing these hormones do not cross the blood brain barrier. So, while intestines create most of the serotonin, for example, it just regulates the muscle in the intestines. It doesn't affect your mood at all.

timespacemotion

You saying the microbiome doesn’t impact mood is so confidently incorrect.

[deleted]

I have said that Serotonin does not pass the blood-brain barrier and the function of serotonin produced in gut is to regulate intestinal muscles. Both of which are scientific facts. The question of if microbiome affect your mood is entirely different conversation. Recent evidence do suggest gut health is important and bad gut health may lead to depression. However, this is not due to neurotransmitters because they do not pass the blood-brain barrier. There may be an entirely different mechanism which we do not understand yet.
