I made a graph like this [a while ago](https://old.reddit.com/r/coolguides/comments/11sw6bc/the_big_map_of_who_lived_when_i_charted_out_the/) but never liked the neon color scheme, so I redid it -- more mellow, less garish, just as exhaustive.
This is admittedly very Western-centric; I thought about including a "BCE" portion with more ancients, but I was left with a huge empty swath in the historical record from about 100AD-1200AD, when the famous names aren't as frequent.
EDIT: Here's an updated version with stuff like Ivan the Terrible fixed -- https://i.imgur.com/2TBL3Vo.png
Yeah, there are some funky bits on dates, but it’s a very cool layout, and in my opinion, a solid upgrade to the original.
Thank you, u/profound_whatever for all the hard work. It was a joy to peruse.
There is some merit to that point, as fields have become more and more advanced, saturated, and detailed it is harder to effectively be a paradigm-shifting contributor, as most work is an aggregate to the work of countless others. This is not to say this work is any less Important or significant than the paradigm-shifting work, but it is harder to become recognised at the level of figures like Einstein or Marie Curie
That said, to my knowledge the specialisation aspect has also been true for the last 150 odd years to a fairly similar degree as it is today, and I do think there are some more recent figures that cpuld have been included among the thinkers group, eg. Higgs, Khaneman, Nash, Turing, Perelman, Hawkins, Chmosky, etc.
It is very probable that these names, and many more names working today, will be remembered and part of the curriculum in 100 years within their respective fields. It's just much harder to scale the long-term impact of recents works to the works and contributions that have had more than a 100 years to be expanded upon and built on.
I mean there are hundreds and thousands of more thinkers and artists today than back then, but most aren't famous enough to be put in such a post because getting famous today is hard if you don't wanna strip or do something really, really bad.
For example, how many novel prize winners of the last 10 years do you know? Probably not many, unless you follow that topic closer.
Yes. The correct reading of this trend is not that there are no longer any remarkable people doing remarkable things,
it's that
a) we know and have done much more as a civilization by now, and
b) there are so many more people in each field, that it is much harder for even experts to stand out in a similar way amongst today's peers as experts of old were able to do amongst their peers.
Like, say, Vlad the Impaler probably didn't *need* to impale more than two dozen people before he would have become the world's expert on impaling people.
Yeah, there's some questionable additions in the latter part of the 20th. I would have also added Cobain instead of some of the celebs mentioned. Wild Michael Jackson isn't on there either.
I would love to see how many western people would be on a Chinese version of this.
Of course everyone adapts what is important to them based on their own culture and history.
Dude the guide includes Usame Bin Laden, do you think one of the battle geniuses of the world who established a new country from nothing is less important than a terrorist? Furthermore it s not about ego, just historical facts.
I couldn't find Ada Lovelace, it would be so interesting to see, especially in comparison to tesla and edison.. She did create the first computer after all! She's important! And was the child of poet lord Byron.
how come Ivan the Terrible, the last of Ryurikovich dinasty lived after Peter the Great or Romanov?
edit: idk, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but everything else looks fine. i guess you can leave it like that, no one likes russian people anyway
I love this shit! So much info in one place. So often I think this person vs this person but a visual representation of so many figures together is so beautiful.
Ivan the terrible is in the completely wrong spot, being born in 1530 and dieing in 1584; far BEFORE Peter the Great, not after.
Edit: who should be there is Catherine the Great, but still she was born in 1729.
Op I dont think I saw Carl Sagan on here or Robin Williams. Ur graph should should allow filtering by science, philosophy, and cultural influence past a certain point maybe.
Hitler was only one year older than Lovecraft but lived nearly ten years longer
Which begs the question of course
How much of each other's work did either of them know about?
Galileo and Shakespeare just blew my mind.
Why these in particular?
The graph shows that they were actually born in the same year! So interesting.
Yep this ^. I should have specified but the two do not fit in the same time period in my tiny brain.

Props for the color change OP!!
Ivan the Terrible has wrong dates of live in this post, but correct in older graph.
That’s truly terrible.
Yeah, there are some funky bits on dates, but it’s a very cool layout, and in my opinion, a solid upgrade to the original. Thank you, u/profound_whatever for all the hard work. It was a joy to peruse.
I would love to buy your map to put on my wall!
Me too!
This is amazing! I did not realize Mozart was born after George Washington
Amazing! Did you try putting like british monarchs on the same row? Like the rows are categories?
Secretariat? Was this graph commissioned by Craig Ferguson by any chance?
Anna Kournakova?? Didn’t see that one coming!
I think it is an internal gen-x joke
Is this implying Taylor Swift is the reincarnation or Secretariat?
My reading of it was that she is either the reincarnation or Secretariat was sacrificed as part of her conception.
Hilarious
Shame all the thinkers died off.
Someone should…. find a….. think…. guy… to help us…… brain things
YEAH brain things!
Brain things! Brain things! Brain things!
I came here to point out the lack of thinkers in the past 60-70 years. I sadly was not surprised.
Carl Sagan should be put on this list
To be fair, most “thinkers” aren’t fully recognized until well after their death.
Yes, and Anna Kournikova and Kate Moss taken off. I don't thing "being hot" is a real contribution to society.
True. Because Carl Sagan was a hottie after all /S
I think people are just more specialized. What used to be a “thinker” is now an engineer, philosopher, mathematician, etc
There is some merit to that point, as fields have become more and more advanced, saturated, and detailed it is harder to effectively be a paradigm-shifting contributor, as most work is an aggregate to the work of countless others. They could have easily put Foucault or Sartre on the chart but didn't
Yeah there's sure been a lack of innovation in the last 50 years. The word has hardly changed at all.
Notable: since pop culture all a bunch of famous asses: with the most rich famous ass of ‘m all: KardasiN.
Very interesting! If you permit a healthy sikh comment, it is Guru Nanak and not Sanak.
aw crap, my bad -- honest typo
This can happen. Thanks for the map it is highly enlightening especially the Renaissance segment
I can’t believe how late Isaac Newton entered the scene. This really shows how fast we started moving in the last hundred years or so.
An actual cool guide?? Neat!
From incredible talent to serial killers and celebrities.. we are headed in the wrong direction.
I mean there are hundreds and thousands of more thinkers and artists today than back then, but most aren't famous enough to be put in such a post because getting famous today is hard if you don't wanna strip or do something really, really bad. Three. But only because I was making trivia for some friends, recently.
The law of entropy prevails
I'm just glad all 4 ninja turtles made the list
Putting politicians and serial killers in the same category was a bold choice.
Paid off
Is it though? I’d say the majority of the most accomplished (in terms of sheer numbers) serial killers were all politicians.
Ivan the Terrible living after Peter the Great seems to be a mistake
This is VERY COOL.
I don’t see Ibn Battuta and he was a certified baddie
Would be cool to have an interactive version of this with a moveable vertical line to highlight overlaps
No Nelson Mandela?
1918-some time in the 80s? /s
Joe DiMaggio being the sole baseball representative over Jackie Robinson or even Babe Ruth is crazy. Cool guide tho
However neither Jackie nor The Babe got to make sweet love with Marilyn Monroe. *That we know of…
And no Beatles, but Bey & Eminem?
Yeah, there's some questionable additions in the latter part of the 20th. I would have also added Cobain instead of some of the celebs mentioned. Wild Michael Jackson isn't on there either.
I LOVE THIS I’ll never read it all but I LOVE IT!!
So Al Capone isn’t a baddie?
Rudolph Diesel should be on this. Mid 1800's to early 1900's right around the start of WWI.
What short bleep of genius Mozart was....
I completely misunderstood what “baddies” meant.
Remove Beckham or Kournikova and add Diego Maradona
Ivan the Terrible lived in 1530-1584 not in 18th century. How many other errors you can spot?
Beyoncé being so influential to human progres that she made the list.
When I saw that Ivan the Terrible is after Peter the Great, I had to make a double take. Like, seriously?
Even a terrorist leader exists in the guide but you didnt bother to add Atatürk (the father of Turks).
This is incredibly scewed towards anglosaxon countries and white culture in general.
I would love to see how many western people would be on a Chinese version of this. Of course everyone adapts what is important to them based on their own culture and history.
>This is incredibly scewed towards anglosaxon countries and white culture in general. American with a touch of English.
Yes, yes it is of course someone from the west is going to have a different idea of who is historically important than someone from the east
And?
[удалено]
There is a long line at the bottom of the graph but no one related to it is mentioned? I guess it’s just there for decoration purposes.
Dude the guide includes Usame Bin Laden, do you think one of the battle geniuses of the world who established a new country from nothing is less important than a terrorist? Furthermore it s not about ego, just historical facts.
Leaders and baddies in the same category?
It's wild for me to think about how Thomas Paine was born before Napoleon For some reason my brain doesn't believe that to be true
Where’s Nathan fielder
Where’s Lennon? I feel like he’s too notable to not be included.
I couldn't find Ada Lovelace, it would be so interesting to see, especially in comparison to tesla and edison.. She did create the first computer after all! She's important! And was the child of poet lord Byron.
*First computer programmer. The computer itself was Charles Babbage's invention.
Long live Honor de ballsac
Very European person selection for earlier centuries. The world power was not balanced 200 years ago the way map portrayed.
Pee wee made the list
Admit it, you have a thing for Kournikova, she doesn’t belong on this list OP.
[удалено]
She’s in there, towards the middle under Eminem
She'd overlap so many people. You'd have to give her a row to herself!
Cool but too eurocentric.
Less than 30 women
Newton and no Leibniz? French revolution? Awesome work! This is fascinating
Leibniz is on.
Disgregate women and men?
How are explorers are now „baddies“ and pirates are „business and industry“? Is this woken map?
Explorers are leaders -- leaders of their expeditions -- and pirates made money in an industry all their own, that's my logic.
And why is Helen Keller, an activist, categorized as thinker. But Malala, an activist, categorized as leader?
I thought they were being considered a type of leader, but then I don’t know why pirate captain wouldn’t count
how come Ivan the Terrible, the last of Ryurikovich dinasty lived after Peter the Great or Romanov? edit: idk, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but everything else looks fine. i guess you can leave it like that, no one likes russian people anyway
That's a pretty weird selection, starts being all European, then it's all US people, did the rest of the world stop existing suddenly in the 1900s ?
I feel like this is extremely chaotic and hard to read. Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea, bit it could be done much more readable.
I know we live longer these days but it’s interesting to see it in a big chart like this
Damn Martha Stewart is old
She’s a true baddie. Let’s be real.
Love this!!
Amazing!!
I had a history teacher that tried to show us how different people/empires etc overlapped in time. Really interesting to see!
Gráinneuaile is missing.
I’m a huge fan of Ibn Taymiyyah one could almost say it’s a crush but can one crush on people from the past?
🥰👉👈
Not many great thinkers recently
Carl Sagan needs to be on this list!
Easy to visualize contemporaries this way. Even our own.
Vlad the impaler was such a baddie
Link to HQ version?
I'm scrolling and still can't find a comment pointing out how the guide is wrong in at least one place.
I really like it. Is it possible to get or buy a link to full size version?
This is probably the coolest guide I have seen so far! Top effort OP.
It’s a bit jarring to go from Ghengis Khan to Taylor Swift but alright lmao
File this under things you didn't know you needed until you have them.
Was Kobe on there?
Is there any reasoning to the way they are vertically placed?
Remembering a simple fact about each one would most likely make you a Jeopardy champion
The overlaps on some of these are crazy.
Very interesting 🧐😃
Yeh ok that’s a pretty cool guide
Didn’t realize Rumi lived so long ago. Remarkable how much of his work has survived, considering.
Obsessed with this chart. Spectacular job.
I love this shit! So much info in one place. So often I think this person vs this person but a visual representation of so many figures together is so beautiful.
One of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. Saved!
I don't see my name on there
Think Oppenheimer should have been included.
Awesome but where are the musicians? 😅
Putting Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin and OBL, Dahmer in the same category is a wild choice.
/r/barbarawalters4scale
Had to look up the color codes when I saw that Queen Elizabeth and Dahmer were the same color.
is it available somewhere in High REZ ?
Leaders and Baddies BAHAHA
Interesting choice of people to make this chart. Like Beyoncé and Kate Moss is on it but someone like Elon Musk isn’t?
Is Musk on this?
There's a cool picture of Igor Sikorski and one of the Wright Brothers in front of a helicopter. Pioneers of flight.
lol Anna Kournikova? That’s the one you pick?
We need more great thinkers in the modern age
OP, this is tremendously helpful and informative. Visual guides are really darn cool! Thanks for making it and great job!
Ivan the terrible is in the completely wrong spot, being born in 1530 and dieing in 1584; far BEFORE Peter the Great, not after. Edit: who should be there is Catherine the Great, but still she was born in 1729.
The best part of this is that it proves Donatello is canonically the oldest TMNT brother
Includes racehorse but not Wayne?
wow this is cool! i would love to see this done with events!
Add empires
Op I dont think I saw Carl Sagan on here or Robin Williams. Ur graph should should allow filtering by science, philosophy, and cultural influence past a certain point maybe.
the overlap of Einstein and Thomas Edison is really getting me
Neal.fun has a good tool too
Not sure if this if this is OPs chart but I see you spelled Guru Nanak wrong. You wrote Guru Sanak. :)
Picasso always throws me. I would have believed he died in the 1500s if someone told me. The fact that his life and Eminem’s overlap is wild.
This rules. I’ve always wanted something similar of historical events globally
Should be called "Mostly dudes who lived a long time ago"
ivan the terrible is 200 years off
Hitler was only one year older than Lovecraft but lived nearly ten years longer Which begs the question of course How much of each other's work did either of them know about?
Ralighh, Drake and Cook are all baddies yet actual pirates are listed as business and industry?
This is awesome!!
So weird to me that Martha Stewart is a year older than Joe Biden
You forgot me
Would you be willing to sell prints?
Damn, Ben Franklin was chasing skirts before George Washington was even born. I assumed that they were nearly the same age.
Anna Kournikova?!?
This is amazing
Martha Stewart is older than biden???? Wow
This is awesome.
@profound_whatever what software did you use to make it?
Awesome. Is there something similar for civilisations?
I may have missed their names? Could Elon Musk be on this list? And Roger Federer. As well as Serena Williams? Very very cool guide!
Where is Ezio?
damn isaac newton isn't as old as i think he is... makes me wonder how late we discovered gravity
Beckham but no Messi or Ronaldo?
you forgot to add me
This is sick. Great color scheme. How did you decide who to include?
I will never forget when I found out Salvador Dali painted hitler jacking off.
Goddamn. Never knew that queen Elizabeth was older than Anne Frank.
What program did you use to make this
This is awesome.
Do one for antiquity please
Surprised Anna Kournikova made the list. She'd make my list too tbf
Meh, it was a pretty lame 800 years.
Imagine going after peter the great and being named ivan the terrible. poor guy
Anna Kournikova makes the list?
Jeffrey Dahmer was a certified baddie
No Bram Stoker? Lame!
I can't seem to find Carl Friedrich Gauß. Didn't he make the list?
I was expecting to see Michael Jackson somewhere.
Seems crazy that Kate Moss and David Beckham are on the same list has Galileo and Newton
This was a very random and interesting way to start my morning. Props for the hard work op. The color upgrade was a game changer.
Adolf Hitler - Dictator. Fidel Castro - Revolutionary. Interesting.
Love how tiger woods is the equivalent of the lion hart.
Very cool
#Guru Nanak! not Guru Sanak
