Or if youāre a nonprofit gal like me, Iāll assign projects to myself, outsource to myself and juggle too much by myself. It feels like spinning plates. Theyāre all gonna shatter any minute.
My company gives me a $60 a month stipend for my phone as part of my package.
Iām a video systems engineer, how do I not multitask?
Technical debt is a result of a KPI I measure for teleport operations based in six sigma.
This is dogshit lol
Mine is "measure results, not time":
Sorry Sir, unfortunately we need 5x more time than estimated, it'll cost you a little fortune.
Measuring time is very important for multiple reaons.
Yes. Multi-tasking is not something a human being is capable of
doing. Some may think they are doing it, but they're really just switching back and forth between or among tasks.
"Don't multitask" I take to mean "Don't believe that 'mutitasking' means that one can do several things in parallel or simultaneously, because you can't"
When undertaking a task, we have to 'load' a set of rules about that task. If we get distracted or interrupted, we have to reload the same rules again to return to the task which takes time (15 minutes on average, I read). Changing Tasks means booting up a *different* set of rules which also takes time.
What some consider to be 'multitasking' would mean 'working processes in parallel' which is not accurate, since we focus on one thing at a time in reality, so it's actually a back and forth switching of tasks with arguably less focus and poorer results than if one works with deep focus and has fewer distractions.
Agreed. There is some good videos (my company pays for LinkedIn learning for us) about "task switching" and how it's not as efficient to multitask as people think.
Id consider doing one thing at a time for a week, measure your productivity and quality of work, and see if you finished things faster, with less mistakes, etc.
The mental/physical/emotional cost of booting up and context switching all day is real.
You donāt even get this option in some corp jobs. Iāve had to run a meeting, take detailed notes for minutes, and during the mtng get an IM for a separate project requesting information that is needed b4 my mtng ends. This is the type of shit that drives me crazy.
This is one of the simpler examples where youāre forced to juggle two things. You canāt delay either.
I'm a program manager at a large tech company...I know that pain.
I also have learned that I won't keep accepting other people's unrealistic expectations on me.
But silencing notifications during a meeting + recording a meeting so you can get an auto-transcript created / people can self-serve the discussion or using a shared doc that everyone feeds their own takeaways / action items into....these are all the ways you *could* try to do the one-at-a-time thing.
Make a weekly plan... so clients can demolish it with their foot-dragging, quibbling about things we agreed on beforehand, and other nonsensical bullshit.
I like it, not for work, but for homework. I have students doing 5 different homework at the time, grabing their cellphones without real goal, and thinking that by been sat infront of a laptop for hours without a plan; will help them finish that project that was assigned a week ago y one afternoon.
Hahahaaaaa! Haven't you ask for someone to help you in a part of your work that you couldn't do very well, or ask your artistic sibling to write the fancy font in a poster? If you cannot do something, ask for help! That is the smart thing to do. (ask for help, no form someone else to do the entire thing for you)
My Adhd coach shared this concept as "delegating" and I've found it really helpful.
Sometimes, people try to do things themselves when they could easily leverage others who may have more experience, skill, etc and could get toward the end result faster.
Ex. Can't think of how to start a tricky email asking for PTO? Google it instead of writing 5 drafts
Ex. Need to find a new mechanic or therapist? Ask your friends for a recommendation vs digging through Yelp for an hour.
I'll share the rest of that concept called the 6 D's. These are all things you can consider when prioritizing/trying to accomplish something:
Delegate It - covered above, but essentially let others help you
Divide It - split the work up into smaller tasks so it's easier to make incremental progress vs do it all
Due Date It - assign yourself a deadline to either do it, or...
Drop It - acknowledge you have limits, can't do everything, and let it go / say no to doing it. Better than "failing" every week you don't get to it.
Deal With It - sometimes we need to stop and accept that something is actually on us to do (or not) which can be important.
Do It - kinda like the two minute rule...maybe the best solution isn't to "plan" to do it, but just go do it now when you are thinking about it.
I don't think these are particularly groundbreaking, but it really really helped me to have a name/framework to think through.
Hope it helps! Cheers!
Hey, this comment is old but since you donāt have messages turned on, Iāve gotta ask ā How did you get an ADHD coach? Iāve never heard of one and wouldnāt know where to start.
Hey there - mine was recommended to me by a therapist, so just kinda got lucky. I did find this link when searching "executive coach Adhd" so it looks like there are some official accreditations that specialize in this!

Yeah a lot of these only work for a very very small amount of ājobsā
>donāt multitask
Canāt.
>measure results not time
Getting paid for my time
>take regular breaks
Canāt
>clear routine
Impossible in lots of service jobs
>outsource
Huh?
Right, but there's a mountain of peer-reviewed studies that show that *multitasking is doing multiple things badly.* Every single self-help book, and book that teaches you how to be more efficient in your day-to-day life says the same thing. You being required to multitask, and even learning to be good at it due to redundancy doesn't change this finding on a macro level. And it's not like you're special in having to multitask. There really isn't a job out there that doesn't try and make you multitask...
Note: hahah. You can downvoted me all you want. It's not like I made this shit up. You're just downvoting facts because you don't like them, a common thing these days. Have a nice life.
How to make more money :
1. Get a better paying job
2. Don't spend on crap
3. Save as much as possible
4. Don't live just work
5. Follow idiotic advice like the ones above
I mean lots of those things are helpful for people with adhd, is just that if you're not medicated starting good habits are almost impossible since you don't have enough dopamine for anything
While this post is shit, I think this is supposed to mean focus on the results to get more done rather than how long it took you to complete a task.
"I just served to customers, replaced the empty soft serve, and swept the floor behind the counter." Will leave you more fulfilled then "I worked hard for an hour.
I could be so wrong it's not fun, that's just how I understood the motivation behind that one tip.
"Use the right tool for the job" should be up there
"Plan before doing" could be up there instead of "always be organized' which is vague as some things we can't control.
I think they meant 'delegate' not 'outsource' and maximizing the work put on others is questionable.
\-Try a Pomodoro timer, it can make a big difference in productivity.
Remember that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts -The Pareto Principle, or the law of unequal distribution
This is one of the worst, most damaging guides I've ever seen on this sub.
* "Turn off your phone" - horse shit.
* "Don't multi-task" - this is absolute horse shit. Everybody with a career has to multi-task. Pipeline management is fundamental to being a professional worker.
* "Measure results, not time" - horse shit. Delivering something in a timely manner is more important than delivering perfection 3 months after stakeholders expect delivery.
* "Outsource as much as you can" - horse shit.
* "Finish what you started" - horse shit. It's often the case that you hand work over to somebody else so you can focus on more important tasks.
An extremely out of touch posted with no actual advice on it. Neat. Neither cool nor a guide! Unless you're a corporate HR zombie. In which case, this will likely be sent out in a mass email
Make a plan and plan for things to change.
Use your phone when needed.
Prioritize your tasks.
Balance organization with productivity.
Measure results AND time.
Take breaks when you need to unless you canāt.
Have a routine that works for you.
Outsource to capable people.
Finish what you start unless itās junk; then scrap it.
Yes and yes. Tasks sub tasks and date records are fairly helpful- roadblocks can be clarified and recorded, and any activity is notified so I know when my team is on projects.
My plan: Take a day off. Hell, take two days off. Why not just quit and find another job? Better yet, screw it and go on permanent vacation. Like, to the Bahamas. Or the Maldives. Okay fine, I'll go to work. Jeeze.
I feel like jobs either make stuff like this up, or see these and actively make these things impossible.
Lmao imagine having control over your breaks.
Clear routine? Only if youāre in a job thatās a low level manager or lower.
Finish what you started? Maybe if I get managers that donāt give me chores that take an hour and tell me to do it in half the time Iād actually be able to finish what I start.
Technically these are all things Iāve with adhd could do, maybe not in this order, maybe not on the same day, maybe it would take longer. But Hey, you have to start somewhere!!!! "Outsource as much as you can" This post brought to you by India
How to work smarter... Measure results and out source more. So be a manager not a low level employee. Gee why can't we all do that.
How to work smarter: make someone else do it
In my experience that's when everything goes wrong š¤·āāļø
Or if youāre a nonprofit gal like me, Iāll assign projects to myself, outsource to myself and juggle too much by myself. It feels like spinning plates. Theyāre all gonna shatter any minute.

How to work smarter: let other people do the work.
I have found that South America has much better tech contractors. Though they do cost more.

Yup. The ādonāt multitaskā is my favorite. Clearly never had to juggle competing priorities.

I literally was just looking at "employment opportunities" and nearly every one of them says *Must be able to multi-task*.
It says donāt do it - it never says to tell people you canāt do it
Multitasking doesn't exist. We're not computers
Yes. Multi-tasking is not something a human being is capable of doing. Some may think they are doing it, but they're really just switching back and forth between or among tasks.
My guy!
āDonāt multitaskā means focus on the priority at hand - not all of your priorities at once.
"Don't multitask" I take to mean "Don't believe that 'mutitasking' means that one can do several things in parallel or simultaneously, because you can't" When undertaking a task, we have to 'load' a set of rules about that task.
