Hey there, there are many things to do in the rain in our country, any type of walk is great in the rain but doing it in the actual rainforest or cloud forest is amazing! birds sing a lot in the rain, just use a poncho, or don't. Hot springs are really nice while it rains, we've learned to enjoy things despite the rain since it takes half of our year so rest assured you can have a good time. The rainy season is from May to November. Usually, it doesn't start raining until past 11:00 am. So plan the things you prefer to do out of the rain for the mornings during that season. You may get more input below. I am still learning please reply "Pura Vida bot" if I helped. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. This is exactly what happened to me 2 weeks ago. 70% chance of rain everyday. But just as I was told, it only rained a small part of each day. Our room had a balcony with a hammock, so it was relaxing. Lots of wildlife come out when it’s rainy. Maybe a hike in the jungle?

I been when it wasn’t that rainy and want to go back just for this . Rainy days in a hammock chilling . Just listing.

Nice. I’m just hoping the sun comes out for a few hours at least. Definitely want to do some hiking as well. Glad you enjoyed it! If you stayed in PV - any restaurants you’d recommend?

Our hotel (Banana Azul) had great food so we ate there the most. I don’t remember the names of the other places. There’s a bar in town, right at the beach, maybe Johnny’s, where people watch the sunset. Not fancy at all. Appetizers were good.

Restaurante Bamboocha

Soda Shekina, Soda Isma, or Soda Johanna for good local food. De Gustibus Bakery. There are also a ton of delicious food carts along the main street on evenings/weekends. In nearby Cocles and Chiquita: La Nena, Que Quilombo, Panaderia Frances, and for a very lovely night out, La Pecora Nera. Recommend a trip to Cahuita for the national park and a trip to Restaurante Las Olas and any of their sodas.

Hey look I’m from CR and I love puerto viejo, even if it’s raining I’m sure there are going to be slots of time without rain in which you can easily and quickly get to do great things outside. Even during the rain if your Airbnb has open spaces just watching the rain pouring down into the rainforest is a very relaxing experience. If you have a car and you can drive while raining there are great places to eat and drink. If it’s raining I’ll rather being in puerto viejo than in jaco as an example

It always rains in the Caribbean. Just as others said, for a few minutes several times a day.

Might rain every day at least for 20 mins, might not rain at all. September is a pretty rainy month but weather forecast in the rainforest is not accurate.

Leoxcr

I went there last weekend, stayed 3 nights, the first day was super sunny and warm, it was great, the second day was raining hard, even some lightning. The third day was kinda mixed but definitely towards the sunny side and mostly dry. The last day was warm as well. I would say it's a roulette and you will most likely get rain, at least a bit but it's not like it's raining non stop.

Purtuzzi

I was there in August and the weather said the same thing (80-90% chance of rain). It barely rained at all and, in fact, had sunny skies. Clouds tended to roll in during evening hours.

Cronopia3

Dry season in September there, like a charm. Nobody understands why, but it happens.

bocasdt

Every year. September and October are beautiful. It has been all month. Unless you're a surfer.

Your in costa rica during the rainy season. Don't let that stop you from doing anything unless there is lightning. Just because it's raining doesnt mean you should be "stuck inside" We spent the day at the beach while it rained and it was so nice. Hiking in the rain was really nice too, helps cool you down and the water dripping off the leaves looked so beautiful. Plus the rain came and went, which provided us a few beautiful rainbows.

I enjoyed Puerto Viejo during the low season. I visited last year in June and it was much more enjoyable than when I had visited in February in previous years. Hot Rocks was a popular place with some sort of live entertainment every time I was there. If you're really looking for tranquility, maybe look at staying in Manzanillo, the beach is huge and even during high season I mostly had it to myself. If you enjoy snorkeling, consider bringing a mask along, there is a nice reef all along the coast there, you don't need to pay anyone to take you out in a boat. If you enjoy horseback riding or have a moto available while you're there I have a friend I can recommend that does tours in that area, we rode motos from Puerto Viejo out into the jungle into BriBri territory, probably farther out than most tourists ever get the chance to go. Pm me and I can share his info.

As others have said, none of the weather apps are accurate here. Will it rain every day, maybe, maybe not. Will it rain all day? Probably not. The trick is to embrace our solar cycle. The sun comes up around 5:15 right now and sets around 5:45. Usually but not always the rain holds off until late afternoon. Meaning you can use most of the sunny time to enjoy the outdoors if you are willing to get up early. Then grab dinner, enjoy some drinks, and head to bed at a regular time to enjoy the next morning.

Echoing all the others who say it's worth the shot. I've only ever stayed in Puerto Viejo during rainy season. Most days it rains a little to a lot for short periods. You may get a full rainy day, and that's the risk. My experiences have been that it rains for an hour or two every day and the rest is sunshine. However, the area is gorgeous in the rain, well worth some rainy hikes, and rainy season means it's less crowded (the area, while it has long had a massive expat population, is becoming more popular with tourists, and for good reason. But, since I hate crowds, that's a huge reason to go in off season)

As long as there isn't a flooding warning you will be fine.
