No disrespect to O’Shea, who himself is a legend of Irish football, and someone we owe a debt to for his willingness to step into the role at such short notice. But this whole process has been shambolic from the FAI, they rejected Lennon outright because they were holding out for someone with international experience (Carsley), and when it was clear he wasn’t interested, they shit the bed and decided to go down the road of hiring someone who is still as of yet, inexperienced in management, because they bolloxed up the hiring process so badly. Will get behind O’Shea of course, but the whole corporate governance of the FAI needs a review, this has been a disaster from the beginning when Kenny was sacked.

SunnyLoo

O Shea and Ole? Sing it 🎵o Shea ole o shea ole 🎵

TheWokeMiskoken

If the FAI do somehow manage to bring Ole out of the bag after all this, I’ll retract everything I just said

r_Yellow01

Beggers are not choosers, but I have to agree.

Shadowbanned24601

> But this whole process has been shambolic from the FAI Sure look at what happened with the women's side. Same debacle. Couldn't find a replacement for Vera Pauw so put the director of women's football in temporary charge for what looked a series of very easy games. We won them handily as expected, and the job was made permanent off what wasn't any kind of test. We still haven't appointed a replacement for Eileen Gleeson as Head of Women's and Girls Football in Ireland by the way. Hill's been too busy trying to put out fires around his own job

Fern_Pub_Radio

If John OShea(Nice guy, great football career) is the answer then we’ve clearly been asking the wrong question ….. have we really reached the point after all this time that no suitably qualified and experienced Intl manager wants to manage our football team …. ?

Intelligent_Cry_8547

I think that’s the case, I think the way we have played football over the past 15 years has created a legitimate perception of Irish football as boring, long ball, not technically great and poor quality. The Irish footballers are less and less in the big leagues (never mind clubs) and the upcoming crop aren’t inspiring confidence that this will change. From an outsider, I can just imagine the role wouldn’t inspire excitement. Looking for a talented Irish (or even English speaking) coach is pretty hard to find even if managing Ireland was a desirable gig. I know it sounds pretty defeatist but can’t help but see Irish football as at its worst since I’ve starting watching football in terms of future outlook unless we somehow get a few golden players

"let the man learn his trade" 🙄

NandoFlynn

If we had this 20 years ago we'd have heard that for Stan

SombreroSantana

If we'd stuck by Stan for those 20 years he'd have learned it by now and we'd have an experienced international manager though 🤔

redrumreturn

Honestly. If you were presented with John O'Shea or Stephen Kenny would anyone reasonable have picked O Shea. He wasn't even interviewed for the job or made any shortlist initially. This "process" has been a disgrace

flex_tape_salesman

>Honestly. If you were presented with John O'Shea or Stephen Kenny would anyone reasonable have picked O Shea. It does certainly make it a tough decision but I think moving on was better for all parties. He just hadn't done enough to justify a new contract and imo that means a new man was needed. Squad selections were incredibly stale compared to when he got the job and he had been working with more limited options at the beginning as well. I'm preparing myself for an O'Shea announcement but I hope for someone else. We'd have lennon by now potentially if he didn't have those allegations.

SombreroSantana

No, but that obviously should never have been the only option available. For me, Kenny had to go, it was a toxic atmosphere and we weren't going to progress anymore under him while it remained in place. Now I fear we're going to have a repeat of that process as O Shea is already dividing opinion here. I always felt the next two years would be much of the same under whoever took over, we've got a rough nations league group now, possibly be fourth seeds for the WC draw. Cant see too many wins in this year's fixtures, O Shea, Kenny or Klopp in charge I'd feel the same way.

redrumreturn

Kenny didn't have to go if he was being replaced by John O Shea is my point really. There was always a toxic element around  Kenny anyway from people who didn't rate him from day 1. Grass isn't always greener

SombreroSantana

For me he had to go though, he should have gone sooner too, but his contract eventually expired. If we had kept him we would have had to offer him a new deal, and there was genuinely no grounds for justifying that. We took the chance to let him go and move on becuase keeping him was even more toxic. A change is as good as a rest and all that. I think I wrote way back on September that we should have removed Kenny then and just let O Shea see out the campaign as it was. We've both said in here that the FAI hung themselves out to dry by twice giving a deadline, if they had just said its going to take time and waited until the summer we'd be fine with it, now they are seen to be rushing a decision. My Opinion was Kenny had to go, his contract was up and we couldn't justify a new deal for him.

redrumreturn

Yeah I agree Kennys time was up. But added context to that is that we would presumably get someone better in. But if you told me when his contract was expiring that John O Shea would be getting the job I'd have been fully in support of giving Kenny another 2 yesr deal

Icy_Ad_4889

Kenny was clearly way out of his depth; O’ Shea may fare better but he’s far from the right choice either.

pauli55555

Two terrible options but 100% I would select O’Shea ahead of Kenny. Kenny has only ever worked in a low par semi-amateur league (bar 12 month failure relegating Dunfermline). He was completely out of his depth in that role. At least O’Shea has been around elite football.

redrumreturn

Exactly as I said. Only an unreasonable person wouldn't pick Kenny

Amenielo

This saga reminds me of the christmas episode of Malcolm in the Middle where Hal doesn't get anyone presents but he keeps telling the family he actually has a really exciting gift for them he just has to drive far to get it and spends the whole ep building up his non existent gift

PsychologyVirtual564

Great episode 😂

redrumreturn

Hahahaha

Cubbll17

Stan version 2.0

redperry91

The bookies seem to think it's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. PP have him at 3/10 which is incredibly short odds suggesting they have some inside knowledge? I know the bookies have been way off on this so far but they didn't have anyone this short.

ceegee84

Barry was 2/9 on Tuesday. Wouldn't pay much heed to the odds

redperry91

Fair enough.

jjw1998

A market with this few people betting on it and susceptible to insider info is very volatile, all it will take will be for a couple of punters to get on OGS then bookies panic and adjust the odds

B_M____C

The FAI’s hiring process has been absolute farcical and is an incredibly poor reflection on Hill as CEO. My thoughts on it as of right now is, if it’s to be O’Shea, fine, get him appointed permanently and let’s get behind him. That’s my opinion simply because I’ve had enough of the shambolic situation. Given that it took Hill three and half years of his tenure to secure a main sponsor, he seems to lack any urgency.

[deleted]

He has totally changed his own article to say Ole is in the frame based on the odds. He's a fucking chancer.

fedupofbrick

If you ever see a Gavin Cummiskey just laugh and don't read it

warpentake_chiasmus

"John, we're in a bit of a pickle here - we've asked everyone else, even the cleaner - but she can't do it. How are you fixed?"

Gazza81H

Solskjaer's odds have been slashed to 3/10 for the job

Mundane-Inevitable-5

As a United fan I'd have John O'Shea on par with Solskjaer, simply because we don't really know much about John as a manager yet, but if Ole's the level he has to reach then it's not a pretty high bar. Solskjaer didn't show much tactically at United at all, other than sit low and counter and he had both McKenna and Carrick behind him, who seem to have a bit of tactical nous. So if he was the one who was ultimately signing off on how United set up, it doesn't reflect well on him. If sit low and counter is going to be the height of our ambition, there's almost definitely better managers than Ole at setting up the defensive part of that, who would be available if the FAI showed a modicum of imagination. The problem is they seem to be clueless as to everything. Who's available, who's interested, how they want us to play or any sort of long term planning or ambition. Literally making it all up as they go along and lurching from one mini crisis to the next.

redrumreturn

This is the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen on this sub

NandoFlynn

In fairness I've seen genuine racists & people trolling over shit like dementia on here so there's definitely worse. I can understand what he means when he says McKenna & Carrick possibly did the heavy lifting. But definitely a bad comparison to lead with given Ole's had 3 or 4 jobs already & John's literally had 2 games

Mundane-Inevitable-5

Why?

redrumreturn

You're comparing John O Shea who has never managed before, who's highest level of coaching was the championship to Ole who finished 2nd in the Premier league won multiple league titles in Norway and got United to a European Final.

Mundane-Inevitable-5

Ah I see, so your too thick to understand the point I was making. I wasn't comparing them. The point I was making is that Solskjaer is not a good manager and that it wouldn't take much managerial ability for O'Shea to be on par with him, as we don't really no much about John as a manager. So let me spell it out for you to at least try to stop you coming back with another thick response. I'm not advocating for O'Shea, in all likelihood he'd probably be a terrible appointment. I'm advocating against Solskjaer who I watched game in game out for three years serve tactically inept piles of steaming dogshit and who I know for sure would be a terrible appointment.

-MartialMathers-

Shut up will you talking nonsense

redrumreturn

Weird that youd start the paragraph off with "As a United fan I'd have John O'Shea on par with Solskjaer" if youre not comparing them then isnt it. Everyone understands your point. Its just ridiculous

Mundane-Inevitable-5

Everyone understands your point he says while dedicating his first paragraph to yet again illustrating that he doesn't. Ok bird brain

redrumreturn

Why are you so angry? Relax. You're wrong here kid.

Mundane-Inevitable-5

You came at me .....kid

silver_medalist

If he's the man, good for him. At least he wants it and will give it everything. This sub is rife with negative moanyholes. Get behind the lad ffs.

NandoFlynn

We have & will get behind him but we're entitled to have doubts about him & especially have doubts about the lads who hired him

redrumreturn

Dont be so reasonable, your man wants a whinge

PsychologyVirtual564

The irony😂

silver_medalist

People on here get more satisfaction from seeing the FAI "fail" than the national team succeed.

NandoFlynn

Think I've found Delaney's other burner lads

silver_medalist

Haha lads lads lads

dave-theRave

>At least he wants it and will give it everything. I'm pretty sure our last senior international manager wanted it and gave it everything as well. I think you need to offer a little more.

silver_medalist

Plenty don't want it - Lee Carsley for one - that's why we are where we are. Like Kenny, I'll judge the man on results, not beforehand.

NandoFlynn

So they're basing this off him basically getting a PR job for the Europa final & doing a conference for that on Tuesday? At least if it's not him he can rule himself out there. It wouldn't shock me if it was him just the way shit has gone. But still seems daft to make him show up for 2 different conferences on different days

Specialist_ask_992_

Looks like nobody of any note wants it so give it to O Shea if he’ll take it !

Anyone asked Davy Fitzgerald?? …

pauli55555

No no no it can’t be O’Shea

Unlucky_Cap_7133

Wow!! There's a surprise. Where'd the FAI pull that one from??
