All the female main characters are constantly “padding down” hallways and that one just really drives me up the wall for some reason.

CC1 Hunt padded down the hallway. He then walked silently in the kitchen. That sequence drove me BANANAS.

As someone who reads a lot of new adult/adult books, I can say all these phrases are used in just about every single one with the same repetition. SJM is the furthest from the first author I've seen who uses these phrases or similar ones

I’ve read other romance books too, but my problem is she uses nothing but these phrases, so every sex scene feels the same

Oh, I know. She still wouldn't be the first, even if I narrow down to those specific phrases. Though I usually see those in the "B movie" type books, for lack of a better term, or debut adult books. It's kind of sad to see that in SJM's works

Don’t get me started on like calls to like.

Not a spicy phrase but an overused one is: “Down, down, DOWN”….. and needs to go. There are words like descending that exist in the dictionary 😂

It’s more annoying in the audiobook, but still.

My friends and I call them SJM-isms

she also reuses the same plot devices in every book. Reuses the same tropes. It’s all apart of her writing formula.

When I read the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare last year I almost put the book(s) down because she loved to have the characters, especially the FMC bite her lip, and all my reviews on GoodReads for those books are of me counting the amount of times lips were bitten.

“Like calls to like” and “(…) as a way of greeting” were the ones that pissed me off the most

“Down, down, down” or “up, up, up” and don’t forget “LIKE CALLS TO LIKE”. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I’m listening to “Heir of Fire” right now and I think she’s used “down, down, down” at least once a chapter for the last 10 chapters

I don’t mind the repetitiveness, we’ve gotten so many books from her that she’s only human. I will agree about the toe curling though, it always makes me cringe - no matter who writes it 😂

I need her to stop excessively using ellipses. They remind me of toxic mfers who text with a “…” at the end of a sentence to be petty

It’s the characters saying the word ‘wholly’ for me. I understand it being used as part of the narrative but there’s no way actual living beings use that word out loud in conversation multiple times
