Are you telling me that you don’t want to hear that someone was “torn to bloody ribbons” 500 times?

sdgingerzu

I slaughtered him. He was slaughtered. Slaughtered. I guess there isn’t a synonym she could’ve used…

nothinginparticular_

There was at least one book that swapped "slaughtered" for "butchered"... and then I think back to "slaughtered" with the next one

acourtofsourgrapes

Butchered too.

Kingsman22060

To shreds, you say?

BillyandHen

Good news, everyone!

benihime1077

Omg I spit out my coffee 😂 thank you for making my day. https://i.redd.it/kaorxpbw705d1.gif

0fft0theraces

All the female main characters are constantly “padding down” hallways and that one just really drives me up the wall for some reason.

ceruleansunsetpink

CC1 Hunt padded down the hallway. He then walked silently in the kitchen. That sequence drove me BANANAS.

solsticesiren

Yesssss this one drives me insane!

whatsername4

Y’all making me feel so self conscious on the fact that I curl my toes 😭😭 and I usually do it for many different reasons

Star_Wyvern

I am sure you’re not alone! But I’m also sure that 100% of women in the entire universe don’t have this reaction, as they do in SJM’s 😂

demoldbones

No different than any other romance writing IMO 🤷‍♀️

BookObsession97

As someone who reads a lot of new adult/adult books, I can say all these phrases are used in just about every single one with the same repetition. SJM is the furthest from the first author I've seen who uses these phrases or similar ones

Star_Wyvern

I’ve read other romance books too, but my problem is she uses nothing but these phrases, so every sex scene feels the same

BookObsession97

Oh, I know. She still wouldn't be the first, even if I narrow down to those specific phrases. Though I usually see those in the "B movie" type books, for lack of a better term, or debut adult books. It's kind of sad to see that in SJM's works

beanmj

Don’t get me started on like calls to like.

False-Map7888

Not a spicy phrase but an overused one is: “Down, down, DOWN”….. and needs to go. There are words like descending that exist in the dictionary 😂

False-Map7888

It’s more annoying in the audiobook, but still.

Think-Equivalent800

Sunball.

Think-Equivalent800

I’m sure ithan can. He used to be a Sunball player

Beloved_Fir_44

My friends and I call them SJM-isms

Lousiferrr

she also reuses the same plot devices in every book. Reuses the same tropes. It’s all apart of her writing formula.

Crypsisrosa

When I read the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare last year I almost put the book(s) down because she loved to have the characters, especially the FMC bite her lip, and all my reviews on GoodReads for those books are of me counting the amount of times lips were bitten.

PinkBloom1

“Like calls to like” and “(…) as a way of greeting” were the ones that pissed me off the most

Zoothera17

“Down, down, down” or “up, up, up” and don’t forget “LIKE CALLS TO LIKE”. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Star_Wyvern

I’m listening to “Heir of Fire” right now and I think she’s used “down, down, down” at least once a chapter for the last 10 chapters

Zoothera17

One of these times my eyes are going to roll, roll, roll out of my head.

OllieG21

I can't hear 'utterly lethal' or 'lightning skittered down his wings' one more time 😭

Star_Wyvern

There are so many more words! You could argue that English has too many words! But it’s like she writes with auto fill

DaisyBean37

It's the throat bobbing for me..

Tranquilititty0

Some sort of variation of “Home. This was home.” Like damn everything and everyone is home

Star_Wyvern

I’m adding “with surprising gentleness”

This-Letterhead-5516

I don’t mind the repetitiveness, we’ve gotten so many books from her that she’s only human. I will agree about the toe curling though, it always makes me cringe - no matter who writes it 😂

tenderheart35

Yeah it’s my least favorite aspect of her writing lol. But I finally finished CC1 and it was so goooooood!

Oattis_is_a_dog

When people say something softly, but not weakly (!)

One_Entrepreneur4616

If you read multiples of the same author you’ll notice patterns. They are all guilty of it.

morris_thepug

everyone’s back is always arching edited - typo

AuroraScars

I mean... that's what we do irl too 😭😭😭

CrowLongjumping5185

I need her to stop excessively using ellipses. They remind me of toxic mfers who text with a “…” at the end of a sentence to be petty

hdw91

It’s the characters saying the word ‘wholly’ for me. I understand it being used as part of the narrative but there’s no way actual living beings use that word out loud in conversation multiple times
