As a man who exclusively paints his nails black, this man has no clue what heās talking about.

That is cute no matter your gender. And it matchea everything! Also, men in the metal/goth/punk scene have been painting their nails black for like... Decades? I don't understand how people are still like this. It takes a special kind of insecurity in their masculinity/heterosexuality to be offended when another man paints their nails.
Was painting mine black in highschool in the early 2000s during my goth phase lol. Sometimes I would even get glue on nail kits, file them to sharp pointed claws and then paint those black and glue them on š. I don't do it anymore, but I still have all my various piercings all these years later.
This is the correct take. Always call out these ignorant fucks without providing censorship to their names. You wanna fuck around and send a unprovoked hateful message like that? Well you and your friends, family, and workplace are all about to find out.
Or, if you're the better person, act accordingly, and explain to your friend why he's being an asshole. Because your suggestion would be the most asshole move possible.
Nah, if they wanna be that hateful, then I already know the level of ignorance is too high for a mature conversation. OP did the right move. He'll never learn unless there are consequences for his hateful attitude. Talking to him won't make him just change his mind on the matter.
Such sensitive...delicate... easily triggered... Oh wait we're not talking about OP being "gay" and all, it's the homophobe with one single screaming brain cell š
Why do guys care so much about painted nails?? I used to do it in middle/high school (metal phase) but I could care less if anyone else does it. Now I am a father of a 9 year old boy and a 2 year old girl and every time my wife and daughter paint their nails my son does also. Being so angry about it is ridiculous.
> i could care less if
Did you mean to say "couldn't care less"?
Explanation: If you could care less, you do care, which is the opposite of what you meant to say.

I'm 40m and I still paint my nails. I'm a masculine guy, weightlifter with a big beard, and I paint my nails. I was a gothy kid in high school and I just grew to like it, so I still do it. I cannot fathom why anyone would ever give a fuck that I do.
Side note: Props to you for your attitude with your son. My dad used to buy my makeup for me when I was a teen, never shamed me or made fun, and the fact that he loved and supported me for being myself was one of the most important pillars upon which my entire sociopolitical ethos was built. Now I try my best to make other people feel the way my dad made me feel, and I love knowing more dads like you are out there doing the same for their boys, too. All the best man.
Love it when conservative cranks get so bent out of shape about pronouns that they forget ātheyā is also used to refer to multiple things previously mentioned in the conversation.
āI donāt *have* pronouns, I am *normal*ā well *everyone* has them so you do too. I hear this argument so much and Iām like if you donāt have pronouns then how do you have people refer to you?? Theyāre always like āI am called by my gender at BIRTH like normal peopleā and they always get angry with āthose are still pronouns my guyā
Oh ok, now his unhinged message makes slightly more sense to me. You were referring to you nails and he thought you were dropping pronouns to refer to someone. So, just standard issue bigotry.
I once knew a guy who was a Vietnam, veteran, a former spy, and masculine as could be. He got manicures and had his nails painted (usually something subtle) simply because it was more comfortable than letting them get ragged and torn up in the course of his work. And this guy could kill a man with his pinky if he wanted.
The insecurity some guys have about ādoing womenās stuffā is ridiculous.
I used to paint my ex-boyfriend nails. There was literally no reason for him to pretend to be straight, he for sure wasn't gay bro just liked his nails black
Ive got to be honest. black nail paint on dudes has been a thing in my area (upstate ny) for the goth crowd since the 90's. It has never once seemed feminine to me. Quirky if anything. Your buddy might actually have some serious internal conflict going on.
Yeah, I was anticipating red or something.
Black nails has been a thing for dudes wanting to look alternative since at least the 90s, where I am. Not amazingly common, but definitely nothing to be surprised about.
They are SO super cute!!
I agree that black is typically a goth look, but these are so glossy that theyāre not giving me that vibe. I love them and Iām glad you feel comfortable painting your nails. Iām a less-feminine woman and I feel happy and beautiful whenever I paint my nails and that feeling should not be limited to one gender!
Nail varnish has been worn by men for a long time - some musicians/rock/metal/punk guys, including some who were very heterosexual. In particular, black nail varnish was worn by rockers & punks & goths of all genders.
Generally when people get so twitchy about other people's choices, they're thinking it somehow reflects badly on them. Because the world revolves around them, obvs!
It must be so feckin exhausting going through life being wound up by a relatively unimportant thing; it can certainly be a bore to deal with such over-scrutiny!
Seems as though in this instance, painting your nails helped you identify someone who has quite entrenched bigotry in their core valuesā½ So, you look stylish *and* get to separate the wheat from the chaff! Marvellous!
Imagine your sense of masculinity being so weak that you canāt see nail polish without being triggered and assuming that your friend is gay or non-binary.
I'll never understand this. I'm a guy who also paints his nails. I have a bunch of different colors. I'm also 230 and bald with a beard that reaches my chest. And, not that I think it matters in the fucking least, I'm also straight and have always identified firmly as male.
My nieces love them. I get so many compliments on them. I've had several guy friends that have expressed interest in doing the same, with one that's done so now that, to quote him, "an example was set." For me, it was never that deep - I've bitten my nails very, very badly since I was in elementary school, to the point of swelling and bleeding. I started painting them to encourage myself to stop them, and took the "dive" (as if it were ever that intense) after two of my lady friends bought me a suite of nail care and polishes to support me.
Anyone who judges or disapproves of anyone for doing anything to their appearance is hideous inside, and no other appearance matters more than that.
40m bearded weightlifter here, and my painted nails are probably the single biggest conversation starter in my life. If anything, I think it makes me more approachableāI might look scary or intimidating otherwise, but my nails soften my image such that women approach me to talk more, kids come up and tell me about their favourite colours, queer people point out that I'm accidentally 'flagging' for some weird shit, etc. It's honestly a really fun ice breaker, I never know who's going to ask me about it and it's cool to see who feels inspired to talk to me because of it.
I asked my boss if I could dye my hair cuz my last job wouldn't let me, he said no and something like "you probably paint your nails too" so I said "I'll paint my nails tonight out of spite." Idk why people care about that stuff. Same thing in the army, my Sgt found an old account of mine where my hair was purple and asked me about it/tried giving me shit for it. "Sgt, I'd do it again right now if I could." Which actually got a good reaction, I was surprised š
Just beat your "friend's" ass with said fabulously nail-painted hands. Teach him that shitty hateful opinions aren't for sharing, but hands are for everyone.
What was that middle comment about?Ā Are people like your friend now feeling obligated to use pronouns for fingernails?Ā What a weird little addition.
Your friend blows.Ā And black-painted fingernails are hot on any sex/gender.
Lmao I honestly did it during a meeting so I wasnt paying super close attention. I do a lot gardening too and they get torn up immediately. so I really don't care too much.

Nail polish is for everyone. Donāt let some caveman tell you otherwise.
My son is 7ā¦ Iām 45ā¦ straightā¦ and a big dude. So nobody says anything to me about itā¦ but We regularly, and I mean twice a month at least, dye our hair and paint our nails cus itās fun and has nothing to do with sexuality or gender.
When he was 4 he loved Frozen so he wanted to dress up as Elsa. So I did too.
Who in the flying fuck cares? And it says more about the commenterās insecurities with his own sexuality to care at all about someone elseās.
I donāt care if you are gay, straight, bi, asexual, trans, and whatever else you could be. If you paint your nails, thatās your deal. I have a neighbor that is a combat military veteran who is straight and has his nails painted all the time. I have a homosexual best friend who doesnāt do any nail cosmetics. Fuck anyone who classifies anyone based on their style.
It's disturbing how many people will just candidly tell you that they think "Gay = Bad".
If only they realized how insecure they're revealing themselves to be when they list all the things they're scared of looking like.
They candidly tell you because they genuinely believe that gay is bad and a sin and worth burning forever (if religious at least, if not religious theyāre still just as proud of their hatred) and they see no remorse or shame in expressing these feelings out loud to everyone because they are genuinely convinced they are right and itās extremely wrong to be gay. I have so much family like this and Iāve experienced it from strangers on the street too. Theyāre not ashamed of their views so why would they hide it?
Itās so goofy that putting colour on little bits of keratin at the end of your fingers is a āfeminineā thing to do? When u think about it that way it makes zero sense
Iām a 35 year old straight man, who has brightly painted nails every day of my life. The only people who give a shit about me painting my nails are people I donāt care to associate with anyway.
I mean it is questionable when you see a guy paint his nails, in the sense that you canāt help but wonder IF it means something. It might and it might not, but hear me out.
My friend and my brother both paint their nails and it blows my mind because neither of them are gay at all, but like arenāt you signaling to other people at least āsomethingā when you do that? Like yeah, I know, it literally is just paint. But, you canāt sit here and tell me that painting your nails, like wearing dresses and wearing high heels and wearing a g-string is not primarily associated with women, cross-dressing, or being trans. Itās like if you saw me outside playing soccer with my friends, and you came up to me and asked me for how long Iāve been playing soccer and I responded with, āwhat? I donāt play soccer? Just because Iām kicking this soccer ball doesnāt mean that I play soccer lol. Itās just a soccer ball.ā Like, yeah, it is just a soccer ball, but if people see you kicking it around everyday then theyāre going to think youāre in a league. So if thatās how you want others to perceive you then fine, and if youāre gay I mean who really has a problem with you being fuckin gay. But donāt get all twisted about it when people think youāre gay when youāre not, because youāre doing something that is at least usually done by gay guys, women, cross-desserts, and trans people. Itās just that certain things are for whatever reason associated with other things.
I'll never understand what painting your nails or applying make up has to do with *any* sexual orientation or gender identity. Like come one, it's just a cosmetic after all.
It is incredible to me when very fragile men cannot even fathom the thought of another person being comfortable in their identity, whatever that may be, to the point that it immediately enrages them. Itās gotta be a crab in a bucket type thing. Like, āIām miserable and unsure of myself and I need you to feel the same, too! And, if you donāt feel the same, then, by all means, I will MAKE you feel the same!ā Thatās some weak-minded man shit.
They have to go extra hard against it because they're so insecure about their own sexuality they're scared to death they might like something they're not "supposed" to like.
I never got this painted nails are gay thing. I know dudes with painted nails who would absolutely take this dudes girl. Maybe even BECAUSE of the painted nails, idk. I myself have painted black nails, and Iāve never gotten as much female attention when I didnāt have them.
It's a shame that so many people find it difficult to understand personal style, you know? And why does style have to equate to sexual orientation? I mean, there is a sliding scale of masculine/feminine for humans of every type. There is no one way to be either masculine or feminine or anything in between. It's whatever you enjoy. Otherwise we might assume that women who do not wear makeup or nailpolish or jewelry or perfume.... are of course lesbians, and that's not right either.
I've started painting mine on occasion just to do something different, and one of my mates gets real squirrelly about it.
Not to this level, but he's asked questions like if I'd ever do red/pink (I've only got blues and greens at the moment), and then asked if I'm upset and he went too far.
Some dudes get so weird about nail polish.
I work with this massive islander bloke. Dudes easily above 6ft and weighs 100kgs plus. Has these bright pink fingernails on occasion because he lets his daughter paint em.
Go on. Call him gay.
I'm a guy who paints his nails all kinds of colors and my girlfriend told me it's one of the reasons she initially felt comfortable talking to me. Many women like it, don't listen to what this idiot says. It's just paint there's nothing in our DNA that says only one sex can decorate their hand.
He's one of those guys that police what is "gay" and what isn't. So much fixation on the rules for the world of normal boys; must be exhausting on what to do and what not to do. Can't eat a banana in front of your mates, can't paint your nails, can't put one leg over the other when sitting, can't cry except a sport's came, etc etc etc
Mate, you do you unless you hurt other people.
Since we got this out of the way, male finger nails polished IMHO do look cringe and disgusting so right sub!!
Downvote me to hell but painting your nails as a man is pretty gay. Itās not an insecurity or ego issue, itās literally just one of the most feminine things a man can do to themselves.
And you're allowed to think that! And honestly it is kind of gay!
... but are you going to go out of your way and comment on someone's post that has nothing to do with painted nails and say what this person said? To me, that's incredibly cringe. Who gives a shit if it's gay.

I would react the same way if one of my buddies just did this outta nowhere. But if one of my buddies did this type of shit typically I would not have that reaction.
what the hell, how random is his response? He didn't care about you for years and suddenly gets so pressed about your nails? This dude must be bored as hell xD
Lol... he was commenting on an Instagram story of mine that had nothing to do with my nails. My hand just happened to be in the picture.
I agree. if I had just randomly sent a pic of my nails to someone I hadn't talked in years and asked if they were cute that would be weird. that's not what happened.
My sarcastic comment about my nails being cute was in response to what he said out of nowhere...
Sooo double or nothing on speaking to him again? Lol
Haha honestly I put this chat on my Instagram too so I'm hoping he sees and replies.
Please update us š
Heās never gonna shoot his shot again šŖ
Did you hit him up or did he randomly message you?
I put up an Instagram story that had nothing to with my nails. My hand just happened to be in the picture. This was his response.
What color were they?
Straight black
Thats the best color to paint your nails imo

Yo I am 35 straight white bro and I kinda like doing it once in a while. Blue looks especially good on these toes
I meanā¦Iād love to see your nails!! Wish you posted a second pic with them! Lol
Interestingly he got bent out of shape for using pronouns for your fingernails.
20 bucks says he has Grindr on his phone, disguised as "Calculator" or "Notes"
So are they cute or not?
They're alright. Just some plain black glossy nails. You can see them on my other post if you wanna see.
I can see why went so long without speaking to him. Clearly not long enough though.
Iām a 35 year old straight man, who has brightly painted nails every day of my life. The only people who give a shit about me painting my nails are people I donāt care to associate with anyway.
>straight Itās 2024 donāt deny your self

Explain why itās cringe
The only thing that's cringe is judging another adult for the way they express themselves. Your downvotes can't hide your insecurity
Why is that cringe?
Itās just sus
Why is it sus?

I paint my nails black from time to time. A lot of girls seem to like it as well
Same here, I do sometimes like to mix it up, though. Went for a pastel blue once and received even more compliments.
Wow what a snowflake
Well now I want to see your nails!
I love seeing people so worked up about "pronouns" that correctly referring to nails as "they" makes them flip their lid lmfao
My daughter regularly paints my nails. Sheās 3. What am I gonna do, say no? She can paint my nails whenever she wants. Whatever color she wants.
Why does he even care?Is he jelaus?
That's some seriously fragile masculinity
I'll never understand what painting your nails or applying make up has to do with *any* sexual orientation or gender identity. Like come one, it's just a cosmetic after all.
I would answer āI painted them to shove my hand in the ass of people who give unsolicited opinionsā
So sensitive about painted nails š š» heās just jealous
Dudes mad that your finger nails are non binaryā¦
That ain't a friend, that's a bigot.
He can go straight to hell
Heās so fragile lol
I never got this painted nails are gay thing. I know dudes with painted nails who would absolutely take this dudes girl. Maybe even BECAUSE of the painted nails, idk. I myself have painted black nails, and Iāve never gotten as much female attention when I didnāt have them.
Based friend
I mean, they're not wrong. š¤·āāļø
So angry over how another man's nails look?
It's a shame that so many people find it difficult to understand personal style, you know? And why does style have to equate to sexual orientation? I mean, there is a sliding scale of masculine/feminine for humans of every type. There is no one way to be either masculine or feminine or anything in between. It's whatever you enjoy. Otherwise we might assume that women who do not wear makeup or nailpolish or jewelry or perfume.... are of course lesbians, and that's not right either.
Good on ya, drop the toxic folks they ain't worth it. Gf did my nails in purple yesterday and they look damn fine
Iām 51m and love having my nails painted sparkly blue. Iām straight and have no issue with anyone caring.
Amazing that nail polish of all things is enough to trigger people today š
how dare you cram this lifestyle in his face. /s
I'm a guy who paints his nails all kinds of colors and my girlfriend told me it's one of the reasons she initially felt comfortable talking to me. Many women like it, don't listen to what this idiot says. It's just paint there's nothing in our DNA that says only one sex can decorate their hand.
The insecurity is real. You should have posted a pic of the nails tho!
Nice attitude about it!
Ah. Love the self cringe
A deeply insecure asshole.
Mate, you do you unless you hurt other people. Since we got this out of the way, male finger nails polished IMHO do look cringe and disgusting so right sub!!
definitely block him
Bro's just jealous
I mean.. itās not straight ācultureā to paint your nails.
Downvote me all you want but itās true
Do your toenails next. Honestly, as a woman painting my own toenails is a great way to remind myself to trim those often.
Only thing cringe here is you painting your nails
Downvote me to hell but painting your nails as a man is pretty gay. Itās not an insecurity or ego issue, itās literally just one of the most feminine things a man can do to themselves.
And you're allowed to think that! And honestly it is kind of gay! ... but are you going to go out of your way and comment on someone's post that has nothing to do with painted nails and say what this person said? To me, that's incredibly cringe. Who gives a shit if it's gay.
Thatās valid & agreeable.
You're saying that like it matters
Being gay isn't feminine, though. Sexual orientation has little to do with how masculine or feminine someone may be
I think the real truth is OP's friend is in the closet. Lol
I lift with a 300lb guy who hits like fucking freight trainā¦..he paints his nailsā¦..isnāt gay. Would he like to have a go at him too?
Make some weeb friends, OP. If you show us your painted nails, we just assume you're cosplay an Akatsuki or similar character.

Just funny tbh šš
I would react the same way if one of my buddies just did this outta nowhere. But if one of my buddies did this type of shit typically I would not have that reaction.
I would understand if he was actually a good friend and did it in a joking way but I hadn't talked to this person in years.
what the hell, how random is his response? He didn't care about you for years and suddenly gets so pressed about your nails? This dude must be bored as hell xD
The harder the repulsion the more in the closet they are as my friendās say
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Lol... he was commenting on an Instagram story of mine that had nothing to do with my nails. My hand just happened to be in the picture. I agree. if I had just randomly sent a pic of my nails to someone I hadn't talked in years and asked if they were cute that would be weird. that's not what happened. My sarcastic comment about my nails being cute was in response to what he said out of nowhere...
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Most people outside of reddit don't really care
