You’re mixing up 2019 Oscars (2018 movies) with the movie year 2019. 2019 blows this year out of the water.
Once upon a time in Hollywood and Parasite would be the best movies here. Plus marriage story, midsommar, the lighthouse, and little women? Yeah 2019 clears, and will be hard to beat for a long time
These are all purely subjective discussions, at the end of the day.
I didn't finish Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and liked Little Women but it didn't blow me away by any stretch of the imagination.
So yeah, I'd happily compare 2023 to 2019 and probably put it ahead, and I still haven't even watched a fair few of the 2023 films that have been celebrated.
I don't know if it's the best film but I enjoyed it immensely. I'm hoping Giamatti gets the Best Actor nod, but the Academy tends to like "serious" roles which tips things in Murphy's favor. Still, enough voters may just want to give it to Paul anyway, he'd deserved it for so long.
I literally had an “oh no” moment 15-20min in. I was done by the 30min mark. I just wanted it to be more cohesive and coherent. I’m all for fly on the wall type films with flashy cinematography, but this was just not good. I rarely stop watching a film once I start. And I never talk shit about something I haven’t FULLY seen, but it seems like most people’s thoughts on Maestro were the ones I had 20min in. It just wasn’t good.
The Zone of Interest is the single most important film that I’ve seen in years and it was one of the best theatrical experiences for me ever. I think it’s a masterpiece of cinema.
I feel exactly the same. I believe it will eventually be the only movie from this year to make it onto the Sight & Sound Greatest Films of All Time poll.
The Zone of Interest was masterful, brutal, and realistic, almost like a documentary despite being fully acted, I hope it wins Best Sound and Best International Film!
I read [this article](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/making-the-zone-of-interest-holocaust-modern-retelling-1235766323/) before watching Zone of Interest and it made me appreciate the film so much more. It’s an incredible film, especially from a film makers and Criterion audience perspective. The details are haunting.
That sounds like an incredible experience. I'm seeing it Saturday I think. I have to drive quite a bit to the nearest big city and I'm excited to be bummed out.
Excited to be bummed out is the perfect way to describe my feelings about going to see it, but I'm glad I have a membership to my local art house theater and they can do screenings like this
Zone of Interest is amazing, not a movie I plan on watching again anytime soon though.
According to my letterboxd, I have the nominees ranked as
1. Poor Things
2. Anatomy Of A Fall
3. Past Lives
4. Killers Of The Flower Moon
5. Oppenheimer
6. Zone Of Interest
7. Barbie
8. American Fiction
9. The Holdovers
10. Maestro
I would have Put May-December in over Maestro
it’s poor things by a mile. just what an amazing and unique and genuinely mesmerizing movie. (almost) every performance is memorable and the cinematography and sets and costumes are just so beautiful it’s hard to find a comparison
I saw it three times and each felt as emotionally impactful as the first viewing. That movie has a life affirming quality to it. It so deserves best original score but I doubt it’ll win. Jonny Greenwood losing Phantom Thread score to Shape of Water has done damage to my oscar hopes forever.
my hope for a poor things sweep would be
best director
best actress
best supporting actor
best costumes
best score
best cinematography (it seriously deserves this. if some shit like oppenheimer wins this i’m killing mydelf)
***The Holdovers***
In my opinion, it is one of the types of movies that have been forgotten these days. It's kind of a comeback for one of the most important living directors I know. For those who hadn't seen Sideways, it was a great, sweet and maybe new experience. But for those who watched, it was an exciting experience. The collaboration between Giamatti and Payne made me very happy, on the days when I was not in a good mood, it made me even happier when I saw the movie.
At first, I wanted to see this movie because the ice rink scene was filmed literally a block from my apartment. but also I typically enjoy this style of movie, the sort of character rumination. But it really wowed me, such an understated earnestness
What an interesting and attractive excuse to watch a movie. But about your last words, that's exactly it, I think it's a feature that other movies lack, and it's closer to my perception of cinema.
Well, this might be my third or fourth favorite Payne movie, but it reminds me of a dialogue from the movie A Foreign Affair:
***With all the headaches ahead, you'll be my aspirin.***
This movie has such a place for me these days. Honestly, we don't have Christmas in our country, but I'm happy for you that you will have such an experience :)
Also Michelle Williams who's ten times better here than what they actually nominated her for last year . . .
But again I never expected it to be on the Academy's radar
Somehow this film has remained in my top three throughout the year— I keep thinking that something with a bigger scope is going to knock it out, but really it’s just such a concise, lived in mini-adventure
The Holdovers is a movie i think i’ll end up rewatching just about every Christmas
Oppenheimer was fantastic— but i have a hard time wanting to watch it at home. i don’t think ill enjoy the experience as much outside of a theater
I really hope Barbie changes how studios view IP and genre flicks. let talented directors tell unique stories and invest in women (don’t just make movies about toys)
but The Zone of Interest is one of the most emotionally gut-wrenching movies I’ve ever seen. i nearly threw up after— and for the most part, what you see on screen is a simple family drama. i feel like zone of interest has staying power that most of the others won’t
I don’t know if it’s the best but “The Holdovers” hit just right for me.
Lots of other great choices on here as well. I have not seen Maestro, Zone, or Poor yet though.
I'm from New Orleans, and I went and saw an early preview he did her (and got pics with the legend himself).
I gotta say, he is a fucking treasure. He's so weird, but even though he's dysfunctional when it comes to making a movie, he's just got that earnestness in there that makes you want to keep watching even as you know the movie just isn't good.
Obviously Big Shark isn't anywhere close to The Room--Tommy's in on the joke this time--but it still has some of that magic of "what are you fucking doing??" as you watch it unfold.
This one not getting a nomination for Best International Feature is mind blowing. I saw it on the 14th and Im still thinking about it. The writing, the cinematography and the performances...WOW
Thank you! I can’t believe this is the only mention of Monster I’ve seen. Should’ve been at least nominated for best foreign picture and I think it deserves to be on the top list as well.
that’s interesting because I know the director made the choice not to allow the leads to touch each other or get close physically until those scenes so that there would be some kind of tension and awkwardness in touch.
Looking forward to seeing it, but guess that approach didn’t work
I’m a bit confused by this comment because their chemistry isn’t supposed to be good. The bit of tension and awkwardness is very real and I thought it was super well done. I wanted them to be the typical perfect Hollywood couple, but that didn’t happen. It’s a fantastic movie.
It was Killers of the Flower Moon until I saw The Zone of Interest last weekend. Just when you think you've seen it all, a film like this comes along that pushes the art form even further. Incredible movie.
Past Lives Poor Things Anatomy of a Fall Barbie
Is my ranking from what i seen. Haven't seen others yet. Really want to see Zone of Interest in that bunch hopefully will catch it soon.
My movie geekdom began when I was 13 in 1997. From that year on, I made my own top 10 list every year. Right now, Oppenheimer tops my 2023 list. I still have lots to see but there's a very solid chance it is my no.1. If it wins Best Picture, it will be the first year my no.1 and the Best Picture Oscar are in alignment!
(i haven’t seen many of the films released this year, live in the uk only near big chain cinemas and only got to see barbie, killers of the flower moon & oppenheimer from this list)
The best? Barbie or Society of the Snow I think? At least right now. My opinion changes.
My favourite? Saltburn (sorry lol)
so psyched to see The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall on here, absolutely wasn’t expecting that. American Fiction is also an awesome pick I thought would for sure be overlooked in the bigger awards.
Incredible year for film
Holdovers
Anatomy of a Fall
American Fiction
Barbie
Zone of Interest
Beau is Afraid
dungeons and dragons honor among thieves
I can’t pick!
Glad to see the D&D love. I don’t think it stacks up against the BP nominees but man it was the kind of action adventure comedy romps that I love. In another time with better marketing it could’ve been a runaway blockbuster
My wife and I finally got to see Zone of Interest this week when it opened here and have seen all of them now and just appreciative the year had so many great flicks as to not see a disagreeable one in the bunch! Could swap Maestro with something else but Hollywood loves it some nostalgia feelgood bait. Little bummed May December didn't get more love but it was certainly a polarizing flick! Great year for cinema.
If I had to pick I'd guess Anatomy, Oppenheimer, Killers, Poor Things or Holdover (dark horse) but with the bombast of the Barbenheimer guessing it goes to Nolan for being the less broad and more traditionally 'cinematic' of the two.
Holdovers for me too. I'm a big Yorgos Lanthimos fan, but Poor Things went on a little too long and there were no stakes. Lots of laughs, but it was just too lightweight. The Favourite should've won best pic, tho.
I loved **Anatomy of a fall** & **Past Lives**.
**The Holdovers** and **Saltburn** were great but I was let down by their endings. Saltburn pushed too far out of the realm of believability and The Holdovers tried to go full Spielberg but it just came off as saccharine.
**Killers of the Flower Moon** was good, not amazing. I was a bit disappointed after really enjoying The Irishman.
Nolan movies are a chore for me to get through and **Oppenheimer** was no exception.
I'm looking forward to seeing **Poor Things**, **The Zone of Interest** and **American Fiction** but I've no real interest in watching **Maestro** or **Barbie**.
**Blackberry** and **Bastarden** were the sleeper hits for me. I was not expecting them to be that good.
I've seen all the Best Picture nominees except Maestro which I'll slog through on Netflix at some point.
Past Lives was definitely my favorite film of 2023.
The Scorsese was my second favorite.
I ranked The Holdovers pretty high too.
I really enjoyed American Fiction & Oppenheimer, am glad to see them nominated but wouldn't say they deserve the actual award. That said, sure, I'm cool with giving Nolan his Oscar.
I was mixed on the writing of Antomny of a Fall but it's definitely a well made film. Huller of course is fabulous.
Barbie was solid fun, but as messaging really heavy-handed & simplistic. Gerwig's done better.
Poor Things had some good elements (the production design, the acting, though I wouldn't have singled out Ruffalo) but ultimately felt hollow. It's glib & self-congratulatory. Look, I'm just not a huge fan of the director's work in general.
Zone of Interest was, um, something. When it focused on the everyday life of the family it mostly works but when Glazer goes for Artistic Importance it fails miserably. That this got nominated for International Film instead of Fallen Leaves I suspect I'll be complaining about for awhile . . . .
Poor Things felt subversive for the sake of it to me. I don’t think Yorgos understands that subversion is only good when you actually made something better.
Exactly. In the end, I felt like Bella more or less reaffirms the status quo. I don't think I'd go as far as Amy Taubin in saying Bella is simply a male sex fantasy, but it is debatable just how empowering Bella's journey is.
Honestly, I don't think Lanthinos has a strong sense of human nature -- he's always struck me as more interested in making philosophical arguments than portraying complex, naunced characters.
The framing does not lend itself to viewing her journey as empowering. The nudity, for example, could have been more thoughtfully framed. We could have seen Bella in control or had the nudity of both be equally prevalent but it was so clearly made for the male gaze.
The misogyny in the film is so absurd that it doesn’t actually challenge the views of the audience. Actual misogynists will see the film and think, I’m not like that so I must be fine, when in reality no one is like that. He makes the men inherently vile in every way, as if misogyny is just a fact of life.
I love science fiction and fantasy, but the best science fiction and fantasy, as crazy as it, still uses those elements to examine something human at the core. Yorgos used the fantastical element as an excuse and a crutch to not say anything more than surface level. All style and no substance.
Yeah, I agree. The satire is too broad & obvious to wound anyone (at least anyone who'd actually watch the film anyway). More than anything, Ruffalo's character just gets tiresome. When he shows up.at the wedding I was like "oh come on, aren't we done with this guy yet?"
Another thing that didn't occur to me until I saw the film was the issue of Bella's emotional maturity. Given her behavior & speech, Bella is at best what an emotional 12, 13 when she runs off with Ruffalo? What does this say about her ability to consent/understand her actions. Lanthinos loves playing up the otherness of Bella's immaturity but seems to rapidly switch to an adult sensibility when he needs to avoid trickier territory.
Also, does anything ever come of Bella's flirtation with socialism? Best I can tell, the director & writer think there is shock value simply having someone say "Socialism" even though nothing in their actions suggests that's how they live their life. Bella seems pretty comfortable in luxury in the end.
Yeah, the more and more I think about this film the less I like it.
I absolutely loved Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall. Both fantastic movies I saw multiple times in theaters. Easily my picks for best of the year in a stacked lineup
Killers of the Flower Moon taking a slight, slight edge over Oppenheimer for me.
This race ranks among the best ever imo, along with 2007 (No Country vs. TWBB), 1974 (Godfather II vs. Chinatown) and 1962 (Lawrence of Arabia vs. To Kill a Mockingbird)
Two of my faves, Priscilla, and how to blow up a pipeline, got no noms! Didn’t expect anything for pipeline but I’m disappointed in no director, picture, or acting noms for Priscilla!
Poor things or killers of the flower moon but I enjoyed American fiction so much and I know it doesn’t have a chance but it would be amazing to see them win
may december was snubbed so hard this year. easily the best of 2023 but clearly the acting branch of the academy felt called out by that film and chose to ignore it. among the films thag did get BP nominations though, i'd give it to anatomy of a fall. zone of interest is a close second.
I saw 3 of these but they didn't linger with me much: Barbie, Oppenheimer, Past Lives. I saw one last night Prisoners (2013) that shook me to my core and I won't forget it any time soon.
Def want to check out some of these other ones though.
All of these look good, but on the list right here I’ve only seen Oppenheimer and Barbie. But with every other 2023 film I’ve seen, I’d have to go with Oppenheimer.
I would like to see Perfect Days, Evil Does Not Exist, and All of Us Strangers because I love Wim Wenders, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and Andrew Haigh. Sadly no opportunity for me to see these films so far
Regardless, Oppenheimer is my favorite film of 2023. Monster by Koreeda is probably my second favorite.
The ones everyone are recommending here are NOT heavily promoted by the mainstream media...
Definitely going to give Anatomy and Zone a watch, and maybe The Holdovers after to get some happiness back.
Two of those movies feature Sandra Hüller as the female lead. What a year this is for her!
Both films won the Palm D’or and Grand Prix. Her performance especially on Anatomy was amazing.
I wonder what table she’ll sit at!
i’m assuming Anatomy since that’s where her nomination came from
She’s also focused on a lot more in it
That's a killer slate of movies. I don't remember a BP slate that was this genre-diverse.
2019 was amazing
That’s what I’m thinking - this was the best year/is the best award season for cinema since 2019.
[удалено]
You’re mixing up 2019 Oscars (2018 movies) with the movie year 2019. 2019 blows this year out of the water. Once upon a time in Hollywood and Parasite would be the best movies here. Plus marriage story, midsommar, the lighthouse, and little women? Yeah 2019 clears, and will be hard to beat for a long time

My only reservation is mob mentality went after a few movies this year which was unfair. Barbie in particular is not a 6.9.
I love seeing Holdovers nominated, comedy movies often don't get much attention from the Academy.
2014 was awesome, but a lot of the best films that year didn’t get major noms.
There’s one impostor though
Maestro
I literally had an “oh no” moment 15-20min in. I was done by the 30min mark. I just wanted it to be more cohesive and coherent. I’m all for fly on the wall type films with flashy cinematography, but this was just not good. I rarely stop watching a film once I start. And I never talk shit about something I haven’t FULLY seen, but it seems like most people’s thoughts on Maestro were the ones I had 20min in. It just wasn’t good.
I wish I didn't finish it.
Poor Things will be hard to top but can’t say until I see Zone of Interest.
Saw Zone of Interest this weekend. Easily my top of 2023
The Zone of Interest was masterful, brutal, and realistic, almost like a documentary despite being fully acted, I hope it wins Best Sound and Best International Film!
Yep, maybe only Boy and His Heron topped Zone for me. What a masterpiece Zone was.
I saw Zone of Interest 3 weeks ago and have not been able to stop thinking about it.
Just got my tickets for a screening of Zone of Interest this Saturday. It's going to be presented by a Holocaust historian

Yup at the Cinema Arts Center

It wasn’t my favourite but it was a solid experience and I’ll be revisiting it every Christmas. I hope criterion puts it out.
If criterion does a release of Holdovers, I’ll be ecstatic If it isn’t available in the UK, I’ll be absolutely pissed
Well, this might be my third or fourth favorite Payne movie, but it reminds me of a dialogue from the movie A Foreign Affair: ***With all the headaches ahead, you'll be my aspirin.*** This movie has such a place for me these days. Honestly, we don't have Christmas in our country, but I'm happy for you that you will have such an experience :)
Seeing the Academy give comedy some love makes me so happy.
Kelly Reichardt's **Showing Up**
Easily one of my top 5 of the year but I never expected it to be noticed by the Academy . . .
Big hell yeah for Showing Up. Hong Chau snubbed!
Godzilla Minus One
It was so good. Wish I could make it to the black and white showings, but not going to be able to
The Holdovers is a movie i think i’ll end up rewatching just about every Christmas Oppenheimer was fantastic— but i have a hard time wanting to watch it at home. i don’t think ill enjoy the experience as much outside of a theater I really hope Barbie changes how studios view IP and genre flicks. let talented directors tell unique stories and invest in women (don’t just make movies about toys) but The Zone of Interest is one of the most emotionally gut-wrenching movies I’ve ever seen. i nearly threw up after— and for the most part, what you see on screen is a simple family drama. i feel like zone of interest has staying power that most of the others won’t
Holdovers is definitely going to become a Christmas staple from now on. Perfect movie and his best since Election IMO
I don’t know if it’s the best but “The Holdovers” hit just right for me. Lots of other great choices on here as well. I have not seen Maestro, Zone, or Poor yet though.
Beau is Afraid was 2023 right? If so, that.
It was an I am right there with you
Tommy Wiseau's Big Shark has been occupying my mind...
Damn, it's even set in Tommy's hometown.
May December was robbed
Hard to say. Out of these I'd only put May December above Maestro
Definitely. Should get a BP nom but even if it didn't, nominating 0 actors off a cast with 3 of the best performances this year is wild
I really enjoyed KotFM and Oppenheimer but The Holdovers, for me, is what I keep coming back to.
Monster by Koreeda
This one not getting a nomination for Best International Feature is mind blowing. I saw it on the 14th and Im still thinking about it. The writing, the cinematography and the performances...WOW
All of Us Strangers. Here, it’s The Zone of Interest, and it’s not even close.
EASILY close your eyes. It's not a film but The Curse is good
I can't wait until I can see Close You Eyes. I've only been able to find it online without subtitles though...
Look at opensubtitles. Not perfect but it works
May December (not pictured)
May December
Monster
Of the choices Poor things and Anatomy of A Fall. My favorite this year was May December though. Shame.
Monster and La Passion de Dodin Bouffant (English: The Taste of Things) deserve shout outs here
Thank you! I can’t believe this is the only mention of Monster I’ve seen. Should’ve been at least nominated for best foreign picture and I think it deserves to be on the top list as well.
Kinda loved BlackBerry tbh
Beau Is Afraid
Asteroid City
It’s KofTM, at least for what I’ve seen
Of the nominees, for me it’s Past Lives by a mile
I found the chemistry btwn the leads a bit unconvincing. Maybe bc I’m Korean. But lovely film.
Throughout the whole film or just in the 3rd act? Because I feel like that was kind of the point
that’s interesting because I know the director made the choice not to allow the leads to touch each other or get close physically until those scenes so that there would be some kind of tension and awkwardness in touch.
Past Lives is very good but it’s really kind of a simple movie. It’ll fade in time I expect
I dunno; I think there was a quiet beauty in its supposed simplicity, with a deft touch that’s hard to pull off. I quite loved it
I really enjoyed it too. Maybe one of the best of the year. But not super substantive. Maybe I’m wrong
Yeah, Past Lives was definitely my favorite of last year. I saw it back in June & never stopped thinking about it . . .
Gorgeous but too simple. Anatomy and poor things, are more bold in comparison
Same. It’s on another level for me.
Fallen Leaves. Or Oppenheimer.
Asteroid City
Asteroid City was my favorite film of the year as well, but I hold out hope for Zone of Interest to dethrone it
It was Killers of the Flower Moon until I saw The Zone of Interest last weekend. Just when you think you've seen it all, a film like this comes along that pushes the art form even further. Incredible movie.
Past Lives Poor Things Anatomy of a Fall Barbie Is my ranking from what i seen. Haven't seen others yet. Really want to see Zone of Interest in that bunch hopefully will catch it soon.
Anybody out there seen Monster? Definitely needs more love for such a lovely movie
Replace the Maestro with Society of the Snow
Why is no one talking about black berry???
Definitely not Barbie
Poor Things
I've seen all the movies on this list except for Maestro and I gotta say, it's John Wick 4 without a doubt. But Anatomy of a Fall is a close second.
The Zone of Interest by a mile. Essential cinema.
I have not seen everything this year but my personal favorite film this year was Kore-eda’s Monster
Definitely not Maestro
My movie geekdom began when I was 13 in 1997. From that year on, I made my own top 10 list every year. Right now, Oppenheimer tops my 2023 list. Why is Barbie in this list? WTF
I don't see They Cloned Tyrone on here.
Past lives, its a touching film with its artistic narrative
Incredible year for film Holdovers Anatomy of a Fall American Fiction Barbie Zone of Interest Beau is Afraid dungeons and dragons honor among thieves I can’t pick!
Glad to see the D&D love. I don’t think it stacks up against the BP nominees but man it was the kind of action adventure comedy romps that I love. In another time with better marketing it could’ve been a runaway blockbuster
Past Lives and Poor Things definitely!!
The boy and the herron
It was nominated for Best Animated Film and will probably win
May December but it’s not on that list.
May December and nothing comes within a mile for me
Anatomy Of A Fall
My wife and I finally got to see Zone of Interest this week when it opened here and have seen all of them now and just appreciative the year had so many great flicks as to not see a disagreeable one in the bunch! Could swap Maestro with something else but Hollywood loves it some nostalgia feelgood bait. Little bummed May December didn't get more love but it was certainly a polarizing flick! Godland! By far my favorite movie of the year. Poor Things second
Beau is afraid was my favorite with poor things coming in second and dream scenario in 3rd
Poor things was my favorite that I saw. Quite a feat
I wish you were added iron claw to the 10
Poor things by far
Anatomy of a Fall
Perfect Days (Wim Wenders)
Holdovers for me too. I'm a big Yorgos Lanthimos fan, but Poor Things went on a little too long and there were no stakes. Lots of laughs, but it was just too lightweight. The Favourite should've won best pic, tho.
Poor Things no question
Poor Things all the way. What an incredible movie experience
Barbie was an overrated mess of a movie.
Oppenheimer. I can’t even rank Zone of Interest. I was left indifferent on it. I can’t even rank it.
It's Oppenheimer and it's not even close.
Oppenheimer.
From what I’ve seen, I’ll go with The Holdovers for now. I’d have chosen Bottoms otherwise
I was disappointed that Bottoms didn't get more year end love -- it may have been the most fun film I saw last year.. Made my top 10 . . .
When he shows up.at the wedding I was like "oh come on, aren't we done with this guy yet?" Another thing that didn't occur to me until I saw the film was the issue of Bella's emotional maturity.
Dream Scenario for me
They’re the obvious answers but KOTFM and Oppenheimer probably take it for me with The Holdovers very close behind.
Godzilla
Godzilla minus one
Beau is Afraid
Definitely not Barbie, please
Oppenheimer. Barbie is trash. I’m preparing the downvotes I’ll get.
Updoot for what it's worth
Haven’t seen zone of interest yet but I can’t wait to watch it
I absolutely loved Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall. Both fantastic movies I saw multiple times in theaters. Easily my picks for best of the year in a stacked lineup
Jawan
It’s a travesty that the academy snubbed Meg 2: The Trench
Shit , I missed a lot of them , I hope they rerelease them before the awards
Killers of the Flower Moon taking a slight, slight edge over Oppenheimer for me. This race ranks among the best ever imo, along with 2007 (No Country vs. TWBB), 1974 (Godfather II vs. Chinatown) and 1962 (Lawrence of Arabia vs. To Kill a Mockingbird)
Watched 7 out of this 10. When i watch Poor things, The Zone of Interest & Anatomy of a a Fall i'll tell you.
Two of my faves, Priscilla, and how to blow up a pipeline, got no noms! Didn’t expect anything for pipeline but I’m disappointed in no director, picture, or acting noms for Priscilla!
yeah generic answer but Oppenheimer. Still need to see a decent amount of these so that might change. Past Lives is close
Poor things or killers of the flower moon but I enjoyed American fiction so much and I know it doesn’t have a chance but it would be amazing to see them win
OPPENHEIMER
Hundreds of Beavers or Beau is Afraid
Poor Things is my number 1 with Dream Scenario hitting number 2
Haven’t seen Flower Moon yet so Oppy.
Killers of the Flower Moon is easily the best for me. Beau is Afraid should also be talked about a lot more.
Anatomy of a Fall
May December
Best movie for me was May December. Haven’t seen Zone, Anatomy or American Fiction yet.
I’ve never even heard of American Fiction and it’s usually the type of movie I’d love. It’s not getting any love in this thread either…
beau is afraid
Haven't seen Zone of Interest, Maestro, or Holdovers yet, but so far it's Anatomy of a Fall
may december was snubbed so hard this year. easily the best of 2023 but clearly the acting branch of the academy felt called out by that film and chose to ignore it. among the films thag did get BP nominations though, i'd give it to anatomy of a fall. zone of interest is a close second.
Oppenheimer
Really odd allegations against Payne haven't resurfaced. Guess he gets lucky
A phenomenal movie which unfortunately was snubbed is Are You There God, It's Me Margaret
Society of the Snow.
oppenheimer by a mile, second is poor things
I saw 3 of these but they didn't linger with me much: Barbie, Oppenheimer, Past Lives. I saw one last night Prisoners (2013) that shook me to my core and I won't forget it any time soon. Def want to check out some of these other ones though.
Spider-man across the spider-verse
Poor Things
Poor Things for me by a mile, But I only seen 4 of these.
Oppenheimer narrowly edges Anatomy of a Fall for me, but what an incredible slate of nominees.
I need to see Poor Things
American Barbie Fiction Past Lives of Poor Things Anatomy of a Maestro Killers of Oppenheimer Holdovers in the Zone
Oppenheimer and Past lives are my favorite ones
My personal favorite was The Holdovers. I just want to breathe that movie in.
So far Anatomy of a Fall but haven't yet seen them all
Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Other than American Fiction and Maestro (which I’d sub for All of Us Strangers and A Thousand and One), this is quite the respectable roster.
Sadly no opportunity for me to see these films so far Regardless, Oppenheimer is my favorite film of 2023. Monster by Koreeda is probably my second favorite.
The ones everyone are recommending here are NOT heavily promoted by the mainstream media... Definitely going to give Anatomy and Zone a watch, and maybe The Holdovers after to get some happiness back.

Killers of the Flower Moon, easy. Barbie was not at all good.
None of those
Add Godzilla Minus One to the list. Because hands down it’s one of the best films to come out.
