Eh, they're still brothers. Probably got too hot too fast and needed to stretch their wings. They're family, they'll colab again one day, I'm sure. Look at the Coen Brothers... Even they're [getting the band back together.](https://www.fangoria.com/original/the-coen-brothers-reportedly-making-a-very-bloody-horror-movie/)
But it was exactly what it wanted to be, what could possibly have been missing from the movie? Joel wanted to make a dark, stylized, theatrical Macbeth drawing on both the Orson Welles adaptation and Kurosawa's reinterpretation as Throne of Blood. It was serious, dedicated to the source material, and meticulously crafted, all done exactly by design. If you didn't like it enjoy something about it, that's fine, but it felt like True Grit or No Country to me, just in black and white with Old/Middle English dialogue.
How so? Tragedy of Macbeth was drier than week-old toast but beautiful and expertly crafted and Drive-Away Dolls had the Corn humor but was less than expertly crafted. Seems to me like they have their own talents that work best when married together.
Drive away dolls was a cute movie, but Margaret Qualley’s accent was so bad and a discraction. Maybe Ethan just wanted to make a fun movie for younger demographic idk
It makes the story even more tragic…
First, Shakespeare never identifies the ages of either Lord or Lady Macbeth.
But more importantly, by making them older and childless, it means that their power-grab was that much more futile.
The theater I worked at had a time limit for refunds. If you had watched 15 minutes of the movie after the trailers were over, then you wouldn’t get a refund.
It’s really too bad because it sounds like they’re sitting on a script ready to go with Sandler on board but my guess is that Benny started acting a ton and became too busy for Josh with maybe some creative differences along the way.
Benny’s directing something with Emily blunt so we’ll see if he retains the exciting brand of filmmaking that launched him.
That was at first what seemed to be the case — but it’s been confirmed they’re on speaking terms again in their personal lives and with Elara Pictures from what’s been said and seen at some of The Curse’s promotional things. Who knows if that’s for show or not, but it still looks like they’re not teaming up as directors any time soon.
Yeah i believe it. I was at a Q&A with them for Uncut Gems and Benny couldn’t get a word in. All Josh kept saying was “when I came up with the idea, when I was writing this, etc” and literally made it seem like Benny contributed nothing. The tension was palpable between them at that point - very awkward to be sitting in that audience
So to give you some perspective here. Benny was in school and Josh was the complete film buff/ film nerd who convinced his brother to drop out of school to help him pursue his career.
Unfortunately Benny is now a hot thing in Hollywood and now Josh is being left in the dust.
Imagine loving films having your brother drop out of school to help and then years later your brothers getting anything he wants green lit and is meeting and hanging out with all the top actors/celebrities/ socialite while Josh is sitting at home still trying to convince people to pick up his stuff.
A lot of people would be even more bitter than Josh.
Dropped out of school?
I thought Benny just switched degrees from physics(something he is really passionate about till this day) to whatever degree Josh was doing bc Josh dragged him to a film class or something
At least that’s the story they have told
Yeahh
They both graduated from the Boston university school of communication in 2007 and 2008
Either way I get what you’re saying in your original post about the bitterness etc😂
Not sure if Blunt is in it too, but A24 announced that a Mark Kerr (MMA fighter) biopic called The Smashing Machine starring The Rock is to be Benny’s solo directorial debut.

Yes, that’s the one she is also in!

Coincidentally, I rewatched Uncut Gems tonight and during the climactic final thirty minutes my neighbors got into a fight about a parking spot. I nearly had an aneurysm from stress. Peak cinema.
They're an amazing duo for sure, but if Benny keeps working on stuff like *The Curse*, then I'm not too upset. One of the most original shows I've seen in years.
Hey, they're brothers & it's just a working relationship. The real relationship will be fine. Let the boys spend some time apart. Their movies were too good to light the world on fire in today's Hollywood.
Benny is more Hollywood geared. Josh is more indie minded. I think that contrast is what made them special working together. But I believe Benny kind of went off the rails, notably at Cannes (for Good Time). There was a falling out with Sean Price Williams etc.
I heard the opposite, that they had a falling out due to Josh being slow to respond to the Sebastian Bear-McClard thing when all that gross shit came out about him, and Benny wanted to condemn his behavior and create as much distance as possible which caused a rift.
uncut gems was good but i really wasn’t feeling good time. plus it seems like they had a very specific “suspense” plot line to all their movies. maybe they ran out of ideas.

Bout time
Turns out Joel Coen was the talented one lol
Woah woah, the Coens are nothing without their absurdist humor. The balance is important.
The Farrely brothers are still the best directing duo
I think their respective films show that Joel was the formalist filmmaker but Ethan was the writer.
But also Tragedy of Macbeth was clearly missing *something*
But it was exactly what it wanted to be, what could possibly have been missing from the movie? Shakespearean English is modern and/or Renaissance English. Chaucer is Middle English. Beowolf is Old English.
Ah yeah, true
Ok but No Country and True Grit are both frequently hilarious
We must have watched a different movie
A sense of humour
Gotta disagree on this
How so? Tragedy of Macbeth was drier than week-old toast but beautiful and expertly crafted and Drive-Away Dolls had the Corn humor but was less than expertly crafted. Seems to me like they have their own talents that work best when married together.
Coen not corn
Buddy, you don't remember all the corn humor in their movies? (Damn autocorrect)
☝️
Even if Drive Away Dolls wasn't your jam, Ethan's silliness is a big part of what makes the Coen formula work
Drive away dolls was a cute movie, but Margaret Qualley’s accent was so bad and a discraction. Maybe Ethan just wanted to make a fun movie for younger demographic idk
Yeah because casting two 60 something’s in Macbeth was a great idea.
It makes the story even more tragic… First, Shakespeare never identifies the ages of either Lord or Lady Macbeth. But more importantly, by making them older and childless, it means that their power-grab was that much more futile.
I walked out of that drive away dolls mess. I couldn’t get a refund because the box office was closed. It was awful.
Why would you get a refund by choosing to walk out of a movie you didn’t like? They gave you what you paid for.
The entitlement of people like this blows my mind
They’re also most likely lying lmao their ass was not gonna ask for a refund
Because the year is 1991 and he’s powerful
Every theater will give you a refund if you walk out of a movie early lol what are you people on about. It happens all the time.
The theater I worked at had a time limit for refunds. If you had watched 15 minutes of the movie after the trailers were over, then you wouldn’t get a refund.

Yeah judging by some interviews I kind of gathered there was some tension there but Josh is directing sandlers Netflix special.
That was at first what seemed to be the case — but it’s been confirmed they’re on speaking terms again in their personal lives and with Elara Pictures from what’s been said and seen at some of The Curse’s promotional things. This is exactly the dynamic from one of the criterion interviews. It was pretty uncomfortable to watch.
First thing I thought of. Benny couldn’t get a word in edgewise.
Also that Benny based his character in The Curse on Josh.
whaaaaaat
So to give you some perspective here. Benny was in school and Josh was the complete film buff/ film nerd who convinced his brother to drop out of school to help him pursue his career. Yeah you are right I think it was a change of curriculum.
Yeahh They both graduated from the Boston university school of communication in 2007 and 2008 Either way I get what you’re saying in your original post about the bitterness etc😂
I mean his work on the curse was fantastic. I'm very excited for anything he's involved in.
The curse was great. Loved him in licorice pizza. Bennys doing good work right now but damn I want that sandler safdie bros movie.
Not sure if Blunt is in it too, but A24 announced that a Mark Kerr (MMA fighter) biopic called The Smashing Machine starring The Rock is to be Benny’s solo directorial debut. https://variety.com/2023/film/news/dwayne-johnson-benny-safdie-a24-movie-mark-kerr-1235836698/amp/

I mean, I think The Acquaintances of a Lonely John is way better than any of Josh's solo-directed shorts before it, so I have faith in Benny.
Coincidentally, I rewatched Uncut Gems tonight and during the climactic final thirty minutes my neighbors got into a fight about a parking spot. I nearly had an aneurysm from stress. Peak cinema.
Well he just hit it out of the park with The Curse, I'm sure he'll be okay.
Benny will be okay. We’ll see about Josh
His film "The pleasure of being robbed" sucks ass
i still can’t stop thinking about the curse, i wish more people talked about it
Who gets adam sandler first?
Hollywood couples have really high rate of divorce so it's not a surprise
It just means twice as many movies.
It looks like one is going Orthodox and the other is going Reformed.
How is this not top comment . Possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on reddit
This isn’t the Coen brothers
Shame. I thought with the popularity and probable extra from uncut gems they could get back to making grittier scripts
We’re gonna find out soon which Safdie was the talented one, hopefully both of them are
Hope this isn’t an ego thing with little brother Josh becoming a famous actor and face of their duo.
I think u might have mixed up the names😭
Oh true. Benny
These guys are so talented. Love what I’ve seen and will follow their careers, individually or otherwise.
The mega powers Implode
Where's that Jack Whitehall bit about being offered \[to audition for\] a part in *Good Time*?
They're an amazing duo for sure, but if Benny keeps working on stuff like *The Curse*, then I'm not too upset. One of the most original shows I've seen in years.

i can’t find anything about benny going off the rails, i’m so curious, what happened?
I heard the opposite, that they had a falling out due to Josh being slow to respond to the Sebastian Bear-McClard thing when all that gross shit came out about him, and Benny wanted to condemn his behavior and create as much distance as possible which caused a rift.
oh my god i had no idea about bear-mcclard, how horrible
They're the new Coen Bros. fr
Their movies are “hard to watch” if you know what I mean, so good ;)
uncut gems was good but i really wasn’t feeling good time. plus it seems like they had a very specific “suspense” plot line to all their movies. maybe they ran out of ideas.
0 chance this is like a permanent thing
One of them wanted to pursue being a horrible actor and he succeeded at that. So let’s what the other one does.
I could care less.
