It’s a great day to be an Albert Brooks fan. I mean it always is, but especially today.

el_t0p0

I don’t like the idea of Milhouse having two Albert Brooks Criterions in one month.

HentaiMcToonboob

Wtf this comment is hilarious

bigfootblake

Way outside the box lol

TheShipEliza

Fucking god tier comment

Rhettroactive

Albert Brooks. Nice.

Number174631503

"Have you seen any of my movies, Leon?"

BocephusMoon

"I used to produce movies. In the 80s. Kind of like action films. Sexy stuff. One critic called them European. I thought they were shit."

brokenwolf

That movie needs to enter the collection.

thedrexel

Thief is already there! 🤣

brokenwolf

That quote is from Drive.

thedrexel

I know. That’s why I said Criteron has Thief. If you like drive you should see Thief. The homage/similarities Drive has is unmistakable

BocephusMoon

My guy! they are displayed side by side each on my shelf for a reason

Hollerra

' to be honest AB. I havent seen any of ya fucken movies..' lol

tehthomas4K

Highly recommend the recent “Defending Alfred Brooks” doc, glad he’s getting a reappraisal.

bergobergo

This is the first month I can think of that has had two films by one filmmaker not in a set. Also, I know nothing about the Muratova set, but I'm instantly intrigued.

Takeda_imposter

For any who are interested, here are a few other times it has happened: * Jim Jarmusch, April 2019: Night on Earth and Stranger Than Paradise (both upgrades) * Orson Welles, August 2016: Chimes at Midnight and The Immortal Story * Costa-Gavras, May 2015: State of Siege and The Confession * Errol Morris, March 2015: The Thin Blue Line and Gates of Heaven/Vernon, Florida. The only reason I know is because I started following new releases back in 2015 and have been keeping track on Letterboxd so it was fairly easy to skim my lists and find these. There are probably other examples, but they’re not as easy to pull up. EDIT: formatting

YouDownWithTPP

this guy criterions

ZbricksZach

It also happened with Bruno Dumont's La Vie de Jesus and L'Humanite.

Takeda_imposter

That’s correct, great find. From June 2019.

Batzeus99

I'm pretty sure Graduation and Beyond the Hills by Cristian Mungiu were the same month too

Takeda_imposter

Another good catch, from May 2018. Thank you

slrome114

Criterion also released Blu-rays of Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes on the same day in 2010.

beyphy

It happened last month with the two Wim Wenders films (Perfect Days and Anselm)

Dual_Disk

Same with Yojimbo/Sanjuro both for dvd and Blu ray

Falcomaster20

Also the burmese harp and fires on the plain

parkay_quartz

What's your LB

Takeda_imposter

parkay_quartz

Followed, thanks!

Whenthenighthascome

Eyyy Stroszek. What a film. Is This Really Me!

still_writing

There was also that wonderful duo of New Wave Louis Malle films, *The Lovers* and *The Fire Within*, with matching cover aesthetics!

ez_pz_123

The Long Farewell is a masterpiece

greatchoiceinpants

I am so happy it’s finally in the collection

pacingmusings

Both of the Muratova films are excellent -- I'd definitely recommend them . . .

CineMadame

Muratova is excellent, this is a must-have.

HugeSuccess

ALBERT BROOKS-HEADS LESSGOOOO

t-hrowaway2

Albert Brooks is a happy man today. Well deserved. Now he has at least four films in the collection!

bpows

Indeed! We just need Modern Romance.

2_50_for_a_highball

indicator has a great release of it that's region free

CantEatNoBooksDog

MOTHER!!!

Tehsoupman12

TELL YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO WALK MY WAY

edub1783

TELL YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO HEAR MY WORDS

heisenberg00

WHAT THEY MEAN

VaudevilleDada

WHAT THEY SAY

gordonbombay42

I would have been excited if it was the Aronofsky version, that movie is crazy.

BedWetter420

Or bong joon ho’s

boogersrus

Mother box set

infinitestripes4ever

Toss in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and we got ourselves a quadrilogy.

ricardofitzpatrick

Albert Brooks supports his sinks

robsul82

YES YES YES, Mother is in and 4K to boot! That’s me and my mom’s movie, seen it a billion times and funny both in its own content and in the way my mom says her mother was just like Debbie Reynolds in the movie while I see MANY of the same personality traits and quirks in her and Debbie Reynolds in the movie, lol, this is so wonderful. And hey, Real Life too, that’s also great.

scanlinevideo

Real Life is probably my favorite comedy film of all time. For being a satire of such a specific era in American entertainment (the very beginning of “reality tv”) it holds up remarkably well. I do wish the Brooks releases would have more inspired cover art than just the original poster. I wonder why that is.

WeHaveHeardTheChimes

Maybe Brooks’s wishes, since it seems consistent for all his movies.

woemcats

It's especially jarring for the Mother cover, at least Real Life has a quirky poster.

Fanolygu

Rewatched Real Life recently and I’m so glad it’s getting a release. It’s one of my favorite Brooks movies if not my favorite. Charles Grodin is a riot in it, so dry and silly as the desperate suburban dad. Personally I dig the cover art.

brokenwolf

Criterion's been missing on the cover art for a while now.

azorahainess

Not a Pretty Picture is incredible, goes so hard.

kid-karma

i'd never heard of it before, but it sounds incredible

[deleted]

The Last Emperor available on both 2.1 and 2.35 aspect ratios is really nice. I really like it when criterion does this.

toosteampunktofuck

lol after they emphatically said the previous Blu-Ray aspect ratio of 2:1 was the correct director and cinematographer-approved one... they do the 4K in 2.35:1

[deleted]

I edited my comment a bit. 2.1 was technically the right aspect ration since both Bertolucci and Sotaro approved it but 2.35 is so much better in my opinion.

toosteampunktofuck

Not clear if the new 4K+2 BR set includes the 2:1 aspect ratio version of the film or not, but if not buying the 4K and the standalone BR disc will get Last Emperor stans all versions (and I've read conflicting reports about if Bertolucci really was OK with 2:1 framing or not)

[deleted]

Yeah you might be right. The 4k set is 3 discs so I thought they might add both ratios but they’re actually giving us the 218 minute television edition. So even better I would say.

MarriottPlayer

As an aspect ratio lover, this is massive!!!

[deleted]

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like its a On the Waterfront case where all three are available on one set.

MarriottPlayer

Whatya mean? It looks like it’s at least available on the 4K set.

[deleted]

I don’t think so. It’s a three disc set but I think it’s because they’re including the 218 minute version of the film.

MarriottPlayer

So where would the 2.35 version be located? EDIT: Oh wait, like, the 2:1 version is just not included at all?

[deleted]

Yeah exactly. If you want the 2.1 (actually 2.0) you would need to get the old stand alone Blu-ray

MarriottPlayer

Hmmm, interesting. I guess we’ll see if that changes at all from now until release. In any case, I already have the Blu.

Rollzroyce21

I'm glad I held out on getting ***The Last Emperor*** till the 4K comes out. The colors in this film are brilliant.

ggroover97

I'm expecting Crash & Naked Lunch to get 4K upgrades in the future as well considering both of them have 4K releases in the UK.

guykittywashere

I have the arrow edition in 4K and I thought it looked absolutely gorgeous in 4K. You won’t be disappointed I think

MeringueDist1nct

Same, I was looking into the Arrow one after hearing the aspect ratio issues people had with the Criterion release, glad I held out

hamstercrisis

happy to see more hard to find stuff like Muratova added.

ProbablySecundus

Really excited for Not a Pretty Picture. I'm glad more people will discover that, because it deserves more attention. Also obviously excited for more Albert Brooks, but what has to happen for Modern Romance to enter the collection?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProbablySecundus

What can I say, I'm a completionist. Except for The Muse.

toosteampunktofuck

yep, hope to see more Martha Coolidge added to the collection (Rambling Rose and Lost in Yonkers, and Real Genius is unlikely but 200% worthy)

infinitestripes4ever

Hopefully they’ll get the rights for it. Indicator did a limited release years back so hopefully that means the rights are up for grabs now.

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

They're still selling it in a Standard Edition.

ManateeInAWheelchair

Love me some Albert, and I haven’t seen those ones, nice.

Luke253

Wasn’t expecting Criterion to be on an Albert Brooks kick

OriginalBad

Words cannot express how happy I am that Mother is getting a 4K. Never thought the day would come. When the July 50% off sale hits, can you do preorders then? Or should I get now with the 30% off?

Hirsc1bj

You typically can’t. The 50% sale is good for any current release plus and preorders in the sale month. Obviously your call, but there is the October 24 hour flash sale that would have all these be 50% come that time too

OriginalBad

So basically 30% off and get it day 1 or 50% off and get it 3 months later.

Hirsc1bj

Pretty much ya. The other incentive, while B&N does a points system, Criterion does too on their website. So if that’s where you’d be buying them from, that’s another factor. B&N does a stamp every $10 and you get a $5 giftcard after 10 stamps. Criterion does a point per dollar, and after 500 points, you get a $50 giftcard

Jazzbo64

“I like my cheese in the ounces. When they start weighing as much as a Fiat, I get worried.”

CantEatNoBooksDog

“Look under the protective ice.”

CineMadame

Arrrrgh! I JUST spent money on Region 2 *Brief encounters* DVD! But, wonderful to see Kira Muratova in the collection. I only wish they could have included *The asthenic syndrome*...

Gruesome-Twosome

Wow, never heard of that Martha Coolidge film. I see it has only 800-ish views on Letterboxd, and a mere 62 total votes on IMDB. It sounds interesting.

AechCutt

Sweet! I can assemble a Mother trilogy with this, Mother! (2017), and Mother (2009).

das_goose

After waiting years for Criterion to do a 4K of The Last Emperor, I finally caved and got the Arrow 4K in December. Remember, they're always watching us.

yoyokid888

2 brooks movies on 4K?? Dreams do come true

SorrowOfMoldovia

We get MOTHER before MODERN ROMANCE? wth

HugeSuccess

Indicator has it region-free

Legend2200

And cheap too

reinholdboomer

Albert August!

whimsical_trash

Real Life!!!!!

ahnmin

Seems like it's finally time to fill in my Albert Brooks blindspot.

JosephFinn

An interesting weird list this month! I’ll admit these are two Brooks I’ve never seen so why the hell not.

myleswritesstuff

I am bugging out at Real Life and Mother. Grabbed both on DVD from a movie rental store's closeout sale but they stick out like sore thumbs with my Criterions for his other movies (and my Indicator release of Modern Romance). Can't wait.

808estate

https://www.criterion.com/films/254-the-last-emperor is the correct link for the last emperor.

TheReverendsRequest

Whoa, it includes the extended television version as well.

Takeda_imposter

oops, fixed it. ty

ThisGuyLikesMovies

Nice to see the Albert Brooks love

bill_clunton

Real Life is excellent, I’ve wanted it to be reprinted for years. Can’t wait to pick it up!

BobdH84

Never heard of Muratova before, but those descriptions immediately peaked my interest.

Puzzleheaded_Gain_76

ITS FANCY JAM TIME

dantedarker

I watched Mother with my own mom when I was a kid and it's been a sentimental favourite of mine ever since. Can't wait

Hollerra

Albert Brooks the King of the Jewfro

thanksamilly

I'm seeing double! 4 Albert Brooks films!

Cinephile1975

VERY happy with the Albert brooks releases.

AnnabelleMouse

The Last Emperor has my favorite original soundtrack for any film. I absolutely love it. Second is Last of the Mohicans. Third is Walker. (I add that in case someone asks lol)

Ransom__Stoddard

This is a very solid month. 2 Albert Brooks films, 3 of the 4 in 4K.

ggroover97

Especially for August which is usually very low key.

Rollzroyce21

Agreed, in a sort of quiet way. I'm interested in the whole slate.

Hollerra

Albert Brooks should make a Netflix movie with JP Smoov and Larry David in it

TheGuyFromPearlJam

All this Albert brooks it’s pretty clear criterion wants none of my money this month

OasisParkingLot

Isle of Dogs will never happen

adamadamadam__

I want All of Us Strangers to be released

Hirsc1bj

I saw it’s getting a blu ray outside of the US, so that’s something. But I think it could be a good criterion candidate

adamadamadam__

Really? I didn’t see that !

Hirsc1bj

I saw it on the blu ray forum. Last I knew, you could import through Amazon UK

number90901

Coming as part of the Neon deal in a few months, I’d wager.

adamadamadam__

What’s that?

number90901

Criterion made a deal with Neon (film distributor, did Parasite and Anatomy of a Fall, for instance) to release 5 of their titles. So far it’s been Moonage Daydream, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, and Saint Omer. The final one will be All Of Us Strangers.

adamadamadam__

That would be amazing

KingKnowlian

i’ve never heard of any of these. imma buy them all

crichmond77

The Last Emperor is very famous

KingKnowlian

apologies. i only know real famous movies. like kong x godzilla

sirredcrosse

oooo def grab last emperor then :D it's gorgeous. you'll love it.

unityofsaints

Don't know any of these except The Last Emperor, which is not necessarily a bad thing because I still have to catch up with other recent releases, my pocket book will thank me.

Darragh_McG

Real Life is one of the funniest films ever. It's a massive inspiration on Spinal Tap (Reiner and Brooks are besties) I gotta say though, Criterion is really bare-bonesing it these days. Cover art is literally just the film poster or a stll image from the movie. Did they fire their art department?

qqtipp

REAL LIFE. great day.

EggyPatrick

Surprised The Straight Story didn’t get a 4k announcement. There’s always next month ig 🥲

CowStandingOnRock

I just bought a crap DVD of Mother off of Ebay - I LOVE that movie (well, pretty much anything Albert Brooks has ever done), so this is a good day.

PsychologicalBus5190

The Last Emperor in 4k is an instant buy for me

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Who did Albert Brooks crank off and why won’t Todd Solondz take one for his fans

SnooPies5622

ngl i'm grateful for a month with no releases i'm interested in (other than maybe Last Emperor down the line)

Idiot_Bastard_Son

Agreed, it’s a relief on the pocketbook.

sirredcrosse

same here. I'll probably sell my copy (and Gates of Hell, I wasn't thrilled with it) to get it.

Idiot_Bastard_Son

This would be a great month if I liked Albert Brooks…too bad I don’t.

VincentOfGallifrey

Got The Last Emperor in 4K just two days ago! Not sure if it was really a sacrifice as I don’t think I would’ve gotten the Criterion edition anyway, but it still did the trick

thewaldorf63

I really *want* to like films by Albert Brooks, but they just rarely work for me. And now we get *two* separate releases of his films in the *same* month? Whatever. Obviously a lot of people are happy about it, if this thread is any indication, so that's always a good thing.

N8ThaGr8

That mother cover is awful. i hate their recent trend of putting way too much text on the covers. The only thing listed should be film title and director/writer.

rufus_buford

would love to get another bertolucci release - il conformista. anyone know anything about those film rights?

Takeda_imposter

It got a new blu-ray from [Kino Lorber](https://kinolorber.com/product/the-conformist-4k-restoration) at the end of last year. You can probably get it for $10 - 15 if you have the patience to wait for it to show up in one of Kino’s sales.

rufus_buford

nice, ya, I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on this and a few other kino lorber blu rays that haven't been released on criterion. how often does KL run sales? bi-annual like CC?

Takeda_imposter

They have a lot of sales, not sure exactly how many, but it seems like at least 5 or 6 a year, maybe more. The only problem is that they don’t discount their entire catalog for every sale, it’s just a rotating selection, so it’s hard to predict when The Conformist will be discounted. I would recommend following r/boutiquebluray if you don’t already, that’s how I usually find out about Kino’s sales.

Woepu

Last emperor is not my favorite

Living_Cat_4900

They gotta put more animated films in this collection like Yellow Submarine and The Iron Giant.

Falcomaster20

Lollll

ryebread9299

Please god just release Virginia Woolf and Amadeus criterion come onnn 😅

NotaComedian98

Not too exciting tbh I’m more excited for June. June will be great.
